Yeah, it felt like they started mugging for the audience way more, focusing on entertainment and Trump dunking rather than bringing their experience to bear on the issues. They've changed a lot since keepin it 1600.
I still really admire the way activism is baked into their model, though - they're great at encouraging people to volunteer and donate and letting them know where they can do the most good.
Their live shows (and I assume their HBO specials which I didn't watch) are definitely mugging for the audience, but I find this generally to be the case with all live podcasts. They're fun to go to in-person, but I otherwise always skip them as something to listen to.
