I heard it was very easy on Hard. Does that stay consistent?

I'm interested in the game once it goes on sale this Winter.
It gets harder for sure. I imagine some people will find hard to be just right because attacks do hurt quite a bit. But still an amazing game with very fun boss fights.

SMT: Strange Journey Redux. I was in the third dungeon when I stopped playing it a while ago and it's really good. I'm thinking of going back to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 after I'm done with this.

My switch is a total JRPG machine at this point and I have a huge backlog, so I want a little input. After I finish DQXI and before Xenoblade DE comes out next month, should I play:

Tales of Vesperia? Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE? Torna? Trials of Mana? Haven't played any, own em all. lol.

Just got around to Persona 5R. I'm about to finally finish the prologue and boy and am I ready to get the wheels going on this game again! It's such a blast and can't wait to see what's new!

I put DQ XI down a few months ago after completing what's considered the first act and needing a break. But now I've returned to it and I am totally smitten and need to sing some praises. (And ask a question or two...)

Yes the combat is too easy, the music is too repetitive and the game is probably too long. But the game is otherwise carried entirely by its smart, humorous dialogue, excellent characters and creative scenarios. Its a game that is heavily rooted in tradition (you are the chosen one, go save the world) but respects the intelligence of the modern gamer.

I'm around the 50 hour mark and just got to the part where
you liberate your void-faced father from that sadistic purple lion thing
. It was cartoonish but handled in such a way that it was surprisingly touching, JRPG execution at its finest.

I also appreciate the intelligence and humor of some of the text you get from talking to random NPCs. Such a funny, endless game.

Question! I'm on my way to presumably
reunite with Jade at Octagonia.
About how much time until the end of the second act? And then what should I expect in terms of length for the third act?

I'm trying to figure out if I should take another break or power through.

One more game unrejected!

Nocturne is phenomenal.

Gameplay

The press-turn combat is exciting and challenging especially on hard mode. As you learn the ropes, you'll be able to keep up with the pace. It's all about preparation, designing your team, knowing what moves to use and when to use it.

Play your cards right and you're good to go!

What's even more awesome are the dungeons! The level design and puzzles are intricate and well thought out. It's more than teleport drops and pitfalls, like actual actual puzzles. It's also cool how they mesh with the themes.

Story

Full on environmental storytelling.

You as the player set forth in your lonesome journey to discover your reason and decide how you want to create the world.

It's a profound take as I believe it offers more flexibility in choice making compared to the rigid Law/Neutral/Chaos alignment system. As for characters, one did shine out the most to me. By far the best chaos rep.

Other

Gorgeous art direction and cinematography.

The sombre colours and minimalism tune vividly with the game's ambience. At some point I just stop to take in the surroundings and inhale the architectural beauty.

Kaneko's art translates well in three-dimensional space, both humans and demons alike. The idle animation for each demon is neat too!

The music is amazing, mixture of rock, metal and techno. Cool to see SMT II references and some thematic similarities with Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.

update: Dante being in this game is fricking awesome, so hype.

Downside

Macca gouging! Literally sold my soul to obtain a special item. That's the only complaint pretty much.

So yeah, I adore this game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is an absolute experience!

Random thing to add, the game's artsy vibes reminds me of Dinara Kasko's pastries.

Now that Bravely Second is done, I am undecided if I should start Sands of Destruction or Valkyire Profil: Covenant of the Plume.

Sands of Destruction looked cool, but I heard the balance was completely out of whack and the game wasn't really very inspiring.

I absolutely loved Covenant of the Plume, and think it's a very underrated game. The way they tie story into gameplay with the "sin" system and taking the souls of your deceased soldiers to improve your skills is really neat, as well as the multiple endings. Only problem is that characterizations for most of the characters stop after the chapter you first meet them in. Also combining strategy RPG gameplay with the VP combo based battle system is really cool and sets it apart from the tons of other TO/FFT isometric SRPGs out there. Great music, great artwork, and a dark/morbid game in terms of story and atmosphere. Localization is very Alexander O Smith style too (though it wasn't him), that flowery shakespearean type text...

One pointer, don't just try to "hit sin", try to double it, for maximum bonuses. I wasn't aware of this on my first playthrough. And you'll want to play through the game 3x to get the true ending, since there are 3 routes through the game that are completely different (you -kinda- need to play in a certain order due to the difficulty level if you don't sacrifice your party members for new skills). Each route is about 10h.

To everyone in this thread - if you have a DS, and haven't played this game yet, DO IT!!!

I'm not playing it, but someone talk to me about Alliance Alive HD. I feel like it's not mentioned around here a whole lot, but reviews seem very positive.

Original game on the 3DS was pretty fun, though the last third feels very rushed (template-based dungeons, what seemed to be a huge new area to explore just turns out to be a few screens large, story falls apart, repetitive monsters OH GOD IF I HAVE TO FIGHT THAT HIPPO DEMON AGAIN). It feels like a cross between Suikoden (collecting crew members for your Ark) and SaGa (the progression systems - though you can distribute skill points to make the progression a bit more predictable), with a Bravely coat of paint.

The music is by Hamauzu (who also did FFXIII and the 7r), but it's definitely one of his weaker works apart from a few songs.

The first few areas are pretty cool though, with nice dungeon design (cool puzzles!) and a large world map to explore... the traversal is interesting, you can pilot a hang glider. But like I said, towards the last third it feels really rushed. Story is kind of a race war thing going on with a hierarchy of Demons -> Beast humanoids -> Humans. It was written by the Suikoden guy but no where near as complex.

Balance is also weird, some parts are cakewalks while other parts are huge difficulty spikes (a certain multi-party battle in the snow kingdom comes to mind). There's also a few secret endings too.

Woah.

I'd say jump into #FE. You'll know pretty quickly if that's a game worth playing. It shows you it's hand pretty early.

I didn't enjoy Vesperia, but I wanted to. after about 10 hours I quit. The combat system... Feels like a fighting game training room. You just repeat a few basic combo(s) again and again, and it's fun for a while because you are perfecting your execution, and maybe you're adding a new move to the end of it and that's flashy and fun. But mostly, you're repeatedly doing the same combo and it doesn't matter too much about what your opponent is doing... Your success is executing that Bread and butter combo. Thats what it felt like to me..

i enjoyed the world and the characters, bit the combat system sold me off.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Shocked me with how good it is, probably a top 5 FF. Peak battle system of the series, perfect amount of sidequests and collectibles, a charm that XIII lacked. And although the story dips into dumb time travel bullshit, I'm near the end and it's kinda sticking the landing for me.

I should also mention I have disgaea 1 4 and 5 complete even though they aren't technically JRPGS

I knew it wasn't for me after about 10 hours. I really wish it had gone in harder on the pop star thing. I wanted the dungeons and battles to feel more over the top. Instead it just kind of felt like P3/P4 but with colourful costumes.

honestly I'm down for a little hand held persona-ish action. Sounds intriguing to me. Glad I got my hands on a copy!

I think I have about 1/3 of DQXI before I move on. Really trying to power through

I started TMS #FE yesterday and I've put in about five hours so far (still only in the first chapter, idk if that's slow or not) but i'm really, really loving it. i've fallen back into JRPGs pretty heavily this year

What would you say are the strong points in DQXI?

Its just a fun and relaxing game. Theres plenty enough story twists and charming characters like sylvando and veronica to keep you engaged after playing numerous hours.

Each characters can become OP or super useful in their own way and its always a joy figuring it out, mini games like casino and horse riding are also pretty good.

I gave it an 8.5 and I like it more than DQ VIII (8) but its still below DQ V (9) to me. However I think you may like it more than I do if youre really into jrpg. This gen my fav rpgs are mostly western and the action adventure ones e.g. divinity II, dark souls, disco elysium

Similarly, I've got a copy of Alliance Alive HD but just haven't started it yet. I've got a bit of choice paralysis between that, TMS and FFXII: The Zodiac Age

I've stupidly got all of Persona 5 Royal, FFVII R, Bravely Second, Dragon Quest 3, Trails Zero, Atelier Ayesha on the go at the same time as well as the usual FFXIV, even with the lockdown I'm not making much progress lol

I read a reviewer who said P5 Royal was easier because of all the QoL improvemnts over the OG and the second half of the game is like trivial... in its challenge.

Anyone who has played both, confirm that? If thats the case, I'd rather play P5.

I definitely would not call it trivial but the game as a whole is easier because you're given more tools, like there's a jazz club that on certain dates you can take party members to learn new skills, there's accesories that do this and that, personas now have traits including those of party members, Morgana has a passive party wide Divine Grace for example.

There is still plenty of challenge to be found, including the new challenge battles lol. And the new semester as a whole assumes you're op and gives most enemies some kind of evasion, immunity and such, usually to physical damage.

It's also easier in the time management department, it became a meme how in the original the cat sends you to sleep too often and that is not the case in Royal but I always thought that particular criticism of the original was way overblown. Honestly you can't go wrong with either but I think Royal is definitely the way to experience P5, QOL changes may not sound like much but they really make the whole thing flow much better. Just what they did to Mementos alone is worth it IMO.

I'm towards the end of the 3rd CD of FFIX.
The battle system is absolutely broken and unfair towards the player due to how long the animations of the enemies are.
The only fair way to play this game for me is to open the item menu while enemies or characters do their animations so that the ATB stops.
I swear, a haste effect on Zidane only lasted 1 turn for him if I don't do that. Otherwise, it can last up to 6+ turns.

Didn't find this out until the end of the game but Regen is your best friend in FFIX.

Iirc it never stops regenerating health so those long animations are to your advantage basically.

Ugh, I'm getting so bored in Digimon Cyber Sleuth. I think I'm in chapter 12? I always hate this when I start getting burned out in the middle of a long JRPG because if I stop playing now I'll probably never come back to it, but I hate the thought of powering through another 20 hours.

Difficulty is pretty much the only major complaint I have about the game, it's worse in Royal but it was still a problem in the original

Want to pick up an RPG but not sure which one. Preferably one that can be beat comfortably within a week or two because I'd like to play FFVI afterwards.

Paper Mario TTYD (just dropped it last week after making it to Glitzville, wasn't really feeling it this time)

SMT Soul Hackers (could do another run)

Cosmic Star Heroine (I didn't finish this one but I'd like to)

Final Fantasy X (Never finished this one)

I think it's been a couple of years since I put Bravely Default on the shelf. I really enjoyed most of what the game had to offer, but after that repeated section, when I finally got to the actual final boss part, I saved and never went back. And I don't think I'm ready to even now. So, I've also had Bravely Second sitting still in its wrapper for all that time, so I think I'm going to finally dig into it...and hope it doesn't have some similarly ridiculous section of the game.

Dragon Quest 11. I stopped playing early last year, but decided to try and pick it up again a couple of weeks ago. And boy am I glad I did. Seems like I put it down just as it was about to get interesting.

Dropped FFXV the other day. Luckily I only paid the discounted price, sheesh.

It was one of my favourites last year. Just heartwarming and gentle if meandering. Like the warm bath of JRPGs :-)

I made this topic at the beginning of the year but right when I was gonna get started on a playthrough something came up which I don't remember. Then a whole bunch of games I was looking forward to came out but now that I have a break before Xenoblade consumes my life at the end of the month and I'm on a FF kick after 7R I thought I would jump in now.
So I'm playing Final Fantasy X and have made decent progress. Thanks again to all those who replied with tips in that thread If you are here!

I'm playing Persona 5, mostly through Remote Play on my iPad. It's such an amazing game and the convenience of RP is amazing.
I wish I could play it on my Vita instead of my TV, but RP really doesn't work well enough for me, even though my internet connection is generally fast, probably way above what a Vita can even handle from a technical standpoint.
___

In other (not completely Persona unrelated) news: stopped playing TMS#FE Encore. I don't know, it's generally a good JRPG and a solid game. But it's missing something special which would make me wanna continue. I'm in chapter 4 and kind of feel like I've seen it all. /shrug
I also grew tired of the characters, which made me lose the connection to the game on the whole - the interactions with the cast generally are what keeps Persona being so interesting for me. I think I simply expected it to fill my Persona void on a handheld, but I guess I'd be better of replaying P4G on the Vita instead after all.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Memory. Such a fun game. They've improved upon the first, but the game could still use some QoL improvements.

Easier access to Digilab features and bulletin boards would have been nice.

See, this is exactly what I'm experiencing with TMS #FE Encore right now as well. And I haven't played it for two weeks already by this point in time, which is why I feel like I lost any investment I had before. I honestly can't see myself pick it up again by now... Which is kind of sad, but I can't force myself to continue playing.

Thing is, I feel like I have to like it. It's annoying.

finished TMS last month and I genuinely did not feel it worth it by the end, but I do find myself losing patience for some of the motifs in the game in general. There are some fun mechanics but I never found myself feeling as involved as I did with something like persona or smt, but that may have been in part due to the massively scaled back levels of customisation. You pretty much just follow a weapon tree with not much else.

I did think it was cool that you could change your party on the fly, but having to have Itsuki all the time was a drag.

I'm finding TMS easy going enough but this how I feel in general about it. You could take him out of the game completely and nothing would change.

on top of that he seems to have a mechanical weakness for every single major boss for most of the game, which irritated me. I don't think the game was bad, justunfortunately bland at places.

Recommend me an RPG. Any one of Tales of Vesperia, Trials of Mana, and/or Dragon Quest XI.

I'm willing to turn my brain off if the story is simple. Can't stand high school setting or highschool characters, but I don't think any of these 3 games have that.
