Hmm, I need to rewatch NANA. I'll love it just for the ED transitions anyway. I've forgotten many plot details but I did enjoy the trainwreck all in all thanks to the above average character writing and simply sublime directing by Morio Asaka.

I'm around the same place as you now (and I'm going to show my age a bit), and I can't speak for Japan, but in the US... absolutely, yes. I specifically remember the Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck updates from before I went to school in the early 2000s.

granted most of the time the celeb stuff was more focused on scandals like the OJ Simpson trial and Michael Jackson stuff, which I feel like this is being framed more as a scandal than merely a love life update.

This was back before social media so the morning news programs ran a ton of stories like this because it got people to tune in in the morning and talk about it at work/school all day.

I'm not actually sure how popular Trapnest is supposed to be but if they are on the level of Backstreet Boys or N'sync and the media got a scoop on a girlfriend to one of the leads it absolutely would've been on the morning news back then.
I'll take your word for it. I was a kid in the 90s so a lot of that stuff went over my head.

NANA 39
Literally one of the worst contrived episodes of anything I've seen. Why on earth is this front page news? Were the 90s in Japan so boring they had to talk about celebrity love lives on breakfast television? Also, Hachi in some serious battered girlfriend syndrome. Takumi constantly emotionally, sexually and mentally abuses her, acts the victim and then love bombs her. I hate, absolutely hate watching this happen. Why? Because Hachi will stick with this bastard and it'll be treated as romantic. Disgusting.

About halfway through I burst into tears and didn't stop crying for the rest of the episode.

That little subtle moment in the first scene where you wonder why Mizuho has a dirty face and then you see them setting up the funeral service and realise she's been crying.

No one turning up for the service broke my heart.

Rajdhani turning up again had me elated.

The story of the utopia people, the devil, realising it was Hoshi oh my god.

Nagara crying 😭

Nozomi still exerting her will😭

Saying goodbye to the cats 😭

Saying goodbye to Yamabiko 😭

This episode was a dammed masterpiece.

I agree this episode was incredible. I unfortunately fall on the side of the road that has spent too much time pausing and interpreting and not enough just internalizing the characters. So I really haven't build an attachment to the characters, having said that their sadness was still very well conveyed. Absolutely rewatching this entire thing when it's over, I think it is going to be my AOTY.

It's been super painful to watch but I can't quit this train wreck. I'll have all my thoughts at the end but at its core, away from all this telenovela drama, NANA is really brutally honest about being in your 20s and the relationships within. And for that, I love it. I don't relate to everything but I feel like that any adult that watches this show will find something they relate to. Plus I really love the music. It's a solid 3.5/5 so far for me.

Agreed it's not perfect and shoddy in important places, but it really hits in a very genuine and relatable way.

oh damnit this isnt the yuri one

I'm interested.

Hey, even One Piece has weapons that can eat devil's fruit and transform. This seems almost normal in comparison.
I umm, I, I, umm.. I like, umm, like, wtf? WTF!?
Yeah, it's really bad, but it wears it's trash status on its sleeve instead of making you think it's anything else other than straight revenge porn with a heavy slanth. I skimmed the anime and it would fit in on an h site under a few unsavory tags.

I think that might change on a rewatch for you. There was some super early stuff with Mizuho that ties in with this and floored me. Actually, a rewatch is probably on my backlog for next season just because this show is not only dense, but what happens to these characters and their arcs is something to behold and I feel those journeys will tie in heavily in the final.

Yes, I believe that will be the case. I have a well off right after it ends, so this will be what I rewatch then.

Anyone have experience with buying animation cells? I'm looking to purchase at least one for a friend as a gift.

Its going to be tough. On one extreme Link Click really made me feel something, on the other Sonny Boy really makes me think, and in the middle is ODDTaxi. It's going to be a tough choice ranking these but I'm glad to have this problem.

Link Click is on my backlog for Fall. OddTaxi is a 2022 rewatch as I have plenty of other shows I want to see this year...and catch up on One Piece for episode 1000.

Is redo the healer bad? I put this one on my list to check out next season....
I found Redo of Healer vastly interesting. Keyaruga getting a second chance at life and the chance to be the healing hero he was meant to be is entertaining. I liked the friends made a long the way and the action. Plot was enthralling.

Afraid that this other anime may be run of the mill with some of the more interesting aspects of redo removed yet the writer proved themself to be masterful at storytelling so I have hope.

The male to male friendship is a strong point of writing and dialogue.

What an episode. I struggle to find words to describe it. So many parts through the episode felt painful. I had to immigrate as a kid and this episode brought back the feeling I felt as a kid when you had to throw everything away and step forward into the unknown in hopes you get a better life.

The confirmation that Nozomi died crushed me and things became even more painful the more it went down. Mizuho and Nagara crying and greiving, the goodbye scene, seeing just how cold Rajdhani became after living for so long, the cats... Nozomi's will still going strong. This was really emotional and I am gonna need to go for a walk after writing this post.

I loved the symbolism of space and how they used the moon landing event.

The story of the devil was the perfect level of vague. It told so much without having a full episode dedicated to it. I can just imagine the events that lead to it.

Next week is the finale and I am not sure what to expect. So many theories are going through my head and I am wondering just how it will be. Could they be going for a Persona 3 type of sequence with the weeks after the final battle? Whatever happens, I can tell right now, they will stick the landing.

This episode is excellent and probably my favorite episode in the series. Unless the finale tops it.

This anime is an instant classic as far as I am concerned.

Narag djinn having just watched it, episode 11 of Getter Robo arc is where the manga went on Hiatus. There's a very loose epilogue(plus whatever of Ken's notes they had) that'll probably have elements here but 12/13 are basically original

Also it's been a blast, about the best possible outcome you could get out of this type of adaptation, all the new additions are welcome and organic and there's several elements that were missing in the originalNamely Sho being on the command staff. The Gettersaurus pilot redesigns are solid. Black Shin Getter is some epic level SRW bait in the best possible way though

Yeah the space allegory was great, and works so well. I was floored with the way it just works. Another timeless feather on Madhouse's cap.

Almost done with Getter Robo manga. I hope I am able to catch up before it ends.

Yeah the fact they are taking their "first step" towards home is just perfect.
You've got 2 days. Also you can skip Arc manga for now, arts great but the anime is a solid adaptation the only major changes are great additions. Also the manga went on hiatus and got a journey continues epilogue(Ken wanted to return to it but passed away) that'll mostly be ignored by the anime since it's making a full ending

Yeah I am skipping Arc for now (might go back and read it for the cool art) and I am almost done with the manga. Only got Shin left and then it is time to bing the anime.

Not only that but the contrast the endeavor creates and how it shows their growth. The entire show has had them freely changing worlds at will thanks to Nagara, running away at an instant. Here they work together and put their sweat into building something to get them to a new world, the only way we humans know how. "We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard" was in my mind the entire time. More than the service, this sequence is what really hit me hard, these two have come so far in their own way.

It is gonna be so interesting to go back and watch the whole thing again. Mizuho in particular was really negative and so done with everyone. Now she is the opposite.

Many anime can't make such a change work yet this anime does it while being vague and while having time skips yet you can believe in their growth. Compare her and Nagara to everyone else. Most of them are so disappointing. Then there are others like Rajdhani who feels really cold compared to how he was early on but it is very believable as he spent thousands of years exploring and maturing. We didn't see most of it but we can understand it all.

I am really excited to see how they interact with the Dr Strangelove looking guy

From the start I wasn't confident that everyone would love the story. I knew the over the top drama would be too over the top for some (though I did forget some things as well, but I've remembered a lot of the bigger points) though most people like goth Nana in general :p I was always hoping that at the very least that even if you didn't love everything about the anime that you would love the music though. So I'm glad to hear that you do as it's one of my favorite anime OSTs of all time and there are a number of songs I thought got more featured than they have... as I just have listened to the OST that much lol.
Agreed it's not perfect and shoddy in important places, but it really hits in a very genuine and relatable way.

Blue Reflection Ray 24

So the reason Shino remembered what happened last time, was able to make the Red Reflector Rings, and caused everything was because... there was a space-time gap or something that she stumbled into after Kano was killed? They did not explain that one bit. I am amused that Hiori was the one who first tried and failed to help Shino. I think the sisters are just destined to fail her. Other than that, beating Shino to get her to recognize that she does value her feelings and that it won't help to run away from her trauma is exactly in line with how she should be beaten, so that's fine. No resets, but everyone is back to normal. I guess that's a decent enough ending with everyone more or less happier than they were at the start. Doesn't really setup the next game either. With one exception.

Blue reflection as a series baffles me. It's not successful in the slightest. The game didn't sell great, and nobody cared to watch this anime. Not that I blame them given that the game sucks and the anime both starts poorly and has poor animation. Yet clearly someone cares about the franchise given that it's getting a bunch of content. The entire premise of magical girls trying to fix feelings is an okay one, but the game did not have the writing or characters to back it up. And I think the anime knew this, because it shit on the game from every angle. The monsters Reflectors fight are gone, so they start beating each other up to figure out how to manage feelings. It's shown over and over again that Reflectors are just bandaids for people's problems, and if they can't get to the root of the problem nothing will change. The game was a school girl simulator while the anime focuses on its plot. The game (hypocritically) had a bunch of creepy fanservice that the anime completely excised. The anime feels like a deconstruction of the game more than a follow-up. Which I approve of because of the game's lack of quality.

On its own merits Ray was just okay. It started off confusing with unmemorable characters, but once it started honing in on who everyone was it became decent. The main problem was that the two leads, Hiori and Ruka, were incredibly dull. The villains all had more interesting personalities and backstories. At least they got plenty of attention. And at least Hiori got fleshed out enough eventually, though not without her own annoyances. The entire show being about fixing Mio's messes wasn't bad, but it meant the important stuff was about Hiori and Mio (and eventually Shino), leaving Ruka to feel like a third wheel. Didn't help that Ryoka and Amiru felt completely superfluous. Favorite characters were Miyako, Niina, and Uta.

If you like angsty magical girls, I'd say it's worth a watch. But only for that specific demographic. Don't bother with the game. While it helps the lore and themes resonate better, it's not worth the investment. As for the game's sequel, I don't know if I'll bother with it. It'll probably take more from the first game than the anime, which is a big negative. However, Uta was never really beaten. Or at least she didn't lose. She's still got a Red Ring, was the only actual evil Reflector, never changed for the better, and nobody cared about her. And she's going to be in the game. If I get the game, it'll entirely be to see that kinky masochist ruin things for everyone yet again.

Space Dandy 1 -13
This one really didn't grab me as much as I thought it would. While the randomness can be quite funny and every episode is unique, I wasn't really into it. It wasn't bad or anything, just not my thing.

The character of Dandy is obvious a homage to the "classic" anime protagonists (e.g. Cobra) but I really feel like a character like him should be left in the past. And I don't need to see the restaurant "Boobies" (the name says it all) every single episode. Overall there was too much fanservice in this.

The art and animation were very good. And the ideas for each episode were also quite interesting. But it didn't grab me, unfortunately. However, I will watch the second cour so perhaps my opinion will change.

If you wanted more details.

It seems that Ren starts using hallucinogenic drugs and that night he is being chased by the paparazzi for some reason, and he sees a cat but sees Nana instead (remember she is the cat eyed queen to Nobou) he swerves to avoid the cat and ends up crashing into the apartment that Nana and he used to live in stirring up the question whether it was a suicide or accident.

MaidDragon S -END-

Someone mentioned it already upthread but god, what a victim of the strange tendency in rom-coms to cheap out at the last second and not stick to your guns. MaidDragon has been gradually moving towards this outcome for almost the entire season and then to swerve sideways at the last second for 'Lol but we gotta stick to status quo, here's a comedy moment' feels like a massive slap in the face.

Watched Star Wars: Visions. Woof. Best actual short story: The Elder, runner-up The Village Bride. Best pilot film: The Ninth Jedi, runner up Lop & Ocho. Biggest dissapotment: Akakiri. The dubbing really brought things down, would not recommend. Though it's obvious that these generally had shit dialogue.

Lucasfilm clearly didn't give Hiroyuki Imaishi limitations and I hate it. The trashiest short.

Noella end

A cute series. Noella is definitely the highlight of the show. Her outfit is weird though. Pajamas with a long coat? I like the cute little making medicines scene they did every time he made one. I guess it's problem is that there are too many characters with not enough time to do anything with them. Elf girl got one episode and was thrown away for the rest of series except for an appearance at the end. Woof.

Yeah, I have a lot of questions about her.
From the wiki entry it seems like there is a lot of story around her in the manga that isn't covered in the anime. If you are really interested...

Don't forget that Yasu questioned her what her real name was and she just smiled and said it was a secret.

nana.fandom.com

Mai Tsuzuki

Mai Tsuzuki (都築 舞 Tsuzuki Mai), initially introduced as Misato Uehara (上原 美里 Uehara Misato), is a die hard fan of Blast who later becomes Nana Osaki's manager assistant. Misato is a teenager of average height and fair skin complexion. She dyes her hair in golden blonde and styles her hair in...

But I should warn you, there is spoilers for many characters beyond her in her entry, so if you are thinking about reading the manga after the anime you might not want to read it. Though I don't think there are any significant anime spoilers because I think all the spoilers in the article are after the anime unless I'm forgetting something :P

I REALLY hope they don't fail the next arc and I hope they understand that the next arc should be the bigger deal than any non-canon movie about Deku and his two pals saving the world from the menacing Filler Man and his dastardly quirk of No One Cares.
