It's still funny how hated this game is.
I bet if we made a thread saying a new mode was released for it for free, people would immediately shit on it XD
Post launch support has been phenomenal. The devs have fixed issues at a breathneck pace. They have added Quality of Life improvements even faster. We get new modes on a Weekly basis. New loot on a weekly basis. New missions on a weekly basis.

I have been constantly battling myself because all i want to do is create a thread on the main page just listing how great this game is, and how responsive the dev has been. I am a big Destiny and BF1 player and I went fucking months, if not years before they fixed some of the most glaring issues like grenade spam in BF1 and shotgun spam in Destiny.

MGS end game is fantastic. I know it's only been a couple of weeks and they dont have much to do in the SP's end game but they have gotten the loot right. Every weapon or legendary gear that drops is different from the other because of unique perks. if for some reason i get a drop with identical perks, their attack levels are nearly always better. Locking the classes behind the end game is actually a great idea because it creates that end game grind that no one likes but everyone wants if its not there. See BF1 players begging for an end game grind and Destiny 2 players leaving the game because there is nothing to do.

I also really liked the 25 hour campaign which played like a traditional single player campaign with excellent progression that rewarded you with something new after every mission. Uncharted 4 was like 15 hours long but felt like 50. Zelda felt like a slog and i played it for maybe 20-25 hours.

I love how the melee combat feels shockingly right at home with the great shooting mechanics of MGSV. This should not work. But it does. It's Dark Souls meets MGSV. It is something EVERYONE should love but most people just didnt want to give it a chance. Those who did were turned off by its survival and base defense elements which, to me created this intense atmosphere that after 60 hours with the game, still keeps me at the edge of my seat. Just rushing back from the Mansion with a survivor avoiding trackers, root grabbers and then mortar guys outside the teleporter is a stressful and terrifying experience. A game with combat of MGSV and Dark Souls mixed with the loot and end game system of Destiny and Diablo, and survival horror elements of TLOU is being trashed by hardcore gamers who are supposed to value innovation and core gameplay over everything else. I haven't even mentioned the incredibly deep base defense system which has like a 100 different gadgets you can use to put up a great defense.

As far as gameplay is concerned, this sits alongside MGSV, Bloodborne and Horizon as one of the greatest playing games this gen. And yet its combat is quantifiably deeper than all of these games. The level design isnt up to par with past MGS games, and the lack of boss encounters and metal gear fights is disappointing but this is a fantastic first game. Especially for a 40 dollar budget title. If this was a success we could have gotten that full on sequel with more boss fights and setpieces with Metal Gears. But nope. Everyone must hate this game because it's a MGS game and has got machetes, bow and arrows and zombies. How dare they!

P.S The story has no memorable characters and is mostly throwaway, and yet it has 2-3 phenomenal MGS like twists you cannot find in any other game out there. So many of the games have great characters, writing and diagloue, but the twists, the worldbuilding, and the overall plot made me go whoa! Most games are too predictable and dont do great sci-fi twists like this anymore. In a 25 hour campaign, there is maybe 30 minutes of story and yet i had more fun with it then i did playing MGSV or Uncharted 4. It's just so much fun.

Honest question: I played the single-player campaign when the game released, I'm not interested in the cooperative modes, the base defense or to get new gears, since it's a single-player title and I see no reason to get powerful weapons. I know there are two optional bosses (I didn't fight them but I saw a video on youtube), is there a reason to keep playing if you are not interested in the things I listed?
Currently, there is no reason, no.
All the content after the story is about getting stronger, making your base stronger and helping you fight the bosses/beat the co-op missions.
It's like running the same raids over and over to get better gear to run the raids better.
I hope we will get a singleplayer map expansion and stuff in the future but who knows if that's on the table with the reception of the game :(

While they are terrible pains in the asses point blank blasts in their faces with shotguns makes short work of them.

It's not the Mortars themselves, but their bombarding of the teleporter. I tried the same mission for 4 times now and I wanted to throw the controller through the wall. I can't get fast enough to them to kill them and/or the teleporter is getting overrun by Walkers. They sure introduced two new enemy types at the same time eh? Hey now those guys will jump you and artillery strikes will come down, have fun!

They really aren't much of a factor. A single grenade kills them and you can throw it insanely far.
Which mission are you even doing? Sahelanthropus? The teleporter close to it?
You can also just run up to them with a shotgun and kill them with a headshot or two.
But mainly, just throw a grenade at their feet and they're done.
Also, if you are doing the teleporter, you know they are all just chilling on the cliff before you activate it right?
They don't spawn in. Just kill them before the defense. You can sneak up on them by very slowly sneaking and stealthkill them or you can kill them while they "sleep" on the ground.

Is it activating Teleporter 3 derFeef ? By the River? I had a ton of bother with that myself, Initiallly since I took the Walker there hoping to defend the teleporter with it (didn't work), tried again usual style but found the constant bombardment distracting.
Third time I methodically wiped out the surrounding mobs (especially the mortars) before activation, mostly with flame arrows and grenades and picked off the remaining wanderers at a relaxed pace once I activated.

I quite like how the new mobs really changed up the gameplay in Africa, but I must admit that lower valley section was my least favourite area so far.
Love the
mansion ruins though

Thanks Lamptramp and Klyka. I will try again tomorrow. Taking them out one by one seems to be a good idea but there are SO MANY Wanderers to take care off. Also currently running low on materials so I can't make a lot of stuff to make my life easier.
Not a fan of Africa at all. First I thought the change of pace is very welcome but it does not work our for me since it's harsh right now.

I really, really like this game, but the 10% that are frustrating for me are REALLY frustrating.

I'm getting way too many sessions that get disbanded. It's annoying as hell to wait for 5 minutes only to have it disband the session right when starting. I love the multiplayer but this crap makes it not worth it.

Woah, the new mode is pure madness! Really hard to name 5 games which feature combat with so much depth and intensity as you can find here.
This game is just getting better and better.

Wow, just tried the new mode.

Definitely need teamwork. We just got a B on it. This was on Easy. At least we received 600 BP, good enough to gain the first 3 automatic rewards. I AM using a booster so I probably would have gotten 300 BP instead.

Having a boss roam around makes things much more tense.

Enemies start at level 20 on Easy for Rescue missions. Which doesn't seem bad but factor in a person who has to carry the survivor, which makes you walk slowwww. The other 3 need to defend but the enemies come quick since they are attracted to the iris energy from the survivor. Throw in the boss, Frostbite, who can really slow you down and shit gets hectic.

Great mode. Change of pace from salvage.
80,000 BP is needed for the last, automatic reward and we have until April 3rd to do so. I'll definitely be aiming for that.

I keep saying automatic reward because there are 2 lists: 1 gives you rewards based on your BP amount and the other, which is locked, seems to let you choose what you want using BP. I wouldn't be surprised to see this unlock after the event is over.

I wonder what other new items they added to the pool. I'm still looking for a chest piece that can give you a chance at not consuming arrows.

Without saying too much, the area where you are now is definitely my least favourite, it's not too long though.

I did notice that Africa has a lot more gunpowder knocking about in sheds and around the transporters though, so (if like me you've been ignoring firearms) it's a great opportunity to start using some of them.
I still haven't managed to backstab a mortar (though I have knocked one over and stomped on his stupid fat head), In the section you're in now I was able to creep close enough to use kuban crystals to lure the mobs close to the mortar, lob a molotov at the lot then melt back into the forest. A lot of the time the mortar blind firing took out the wanderers as well.

I got a chestpiece that has a chance of me not consuming throwing items :O
That sounds particularly useful, does it proc often have you noticed?

Saved my ass quite a few times already.
I also have a perk that gives a chance not to consume food and drink.

Since the latest update the game disconnects everytime i alt tab... this makes the matchmaking even more boring...

I think the base camp digging officially turned me off from the game. Forgot about wave 2 once, lost half my base. Did it again and in the middle of wave 2 the game freezes. I immediately relog and half my base is gone again.

I get that I can just build gadgets / fortify my base but I prefer the actual combat in the game over building items.

Right now my favorite thing about the game has got to be how many playstyles open up once you hit endgame/get enough resources & crafting schematics.

To start it off, I can run around with a spear and poke the zombies with it. Because I have all the skills unlocked, though, I can do more than just poke. Some sweet dodges, dropdown attacks, CQC counters and whatnot.
Now let's throw in a sidearm. If I'm in a pickle, a bit too overwhelmed by the zeds, I can pull out my fully automatic glock (I got lucky and scored the yellow tier Geist!) and mow down the group.
Alright, how about some more active fighting - shotgun or assault rifle? The shotgun feels extremely satisfying for clearing out huge masses, like a grenade, but you have multiple shots in quick succession. On the other hand, popping heads with every trigger pull of all the wanderers that are slowly limping towards me is another satisfying activity.

Alright, time to change things up a bit. I want to be the crazy guy running around with a bow in a zombie apocalypse. Now the question is: do I just bring simple Heavy arrows, or do I throw in some extras like Fire or Grenade arrows? Ooh, piercing arrows would be pretty great for those long lines of zeds! This'll go well with my big, frost-element two-handed machete that I can use in case I don't see any threats worthy of the bow.

Hm.. Remember Fatman from Metal Gear Solid 2, how he always had C4 everywhere? Well I have all this armor dropped that makes me look as bulky as him and I have all these pouches that let me carry extra explosives like grenades and C4.. I'm pretty sure you know where this one's going!

Team Fortress 2's engineer with all those turrets? You got it! Fill up all the gadget slots with automatic and manual turrets (light & heavy, machine gun & gatling gun), grab a shotgun as a primary, a shotgun as a secondary and crack open a cold one.

Huh.. I got some cool looking ghillie suit pieces, would be cool if I got a sniper rif-- oh. And it's a bolt action too, for that classy sniper feel. And this subclass perk increases crit chance if I shoot from a prone position. I guess I'm grabbing a watchtower in my gadgets, setting up somewhere nice and high to provide overwatch with my rifle! Oh is that a huge group of zeds my teammates are too busy to handle? I'll just use this mortar I brought with myself and rain hell down upon them!

And there's still a bunch more I've still yet to try. The fact that I can unequip my primary weapon (which TPP didn't allow, at least on consoles, maybe a mod on PC allows it) lets me try some more hardcore challenges, like pistol & gadgets only and stuff.

I really hope the devs keep up the good work they've been doing so far. New weapons, like light machine guns (with big 200 round boxes) would be absolutely awesome to see!

Sorry if this post dragged on, but damn, I can't remember the last time I was this excited about the gameplay of a game. In fact The Phantom Pain might've been the last time!

I feel a little guilty, I read AegonSnake 's overview, nodded to myself at a good job well done but didn't bother to leave a message to that effect. Nicely enthused AegonSnake :D

semiconscious It's really not half bad, It's not fabulous but there's a lot to enjoy the further you get into it. This thread sold me on the game too, and the little community we have going has been an extra dash of great :)

aember A great write up too, now I'm at the last mission and had to change my playstyle a couple of times since starting I can't help but agree. The bones of it are pretty simple but the options you get make it so much more fun.

I think one of my first comments in this thread opined that the game was actually pretty good but that Konami hadn't done themselves any favours with the marketing and other info about the game. I'd double down on that sentiment now, it's almost like they purposely did a bad job so that all the first impressions were so bad. The opening is pretty weak and with no hint of whats to come (classes, synergies like you describe aember, multiplayer being "locked"), It's easy to imagine the first couple of hours is all there is and dismiss it as so many have done. It's a shame.

The marketing for this game was atrocious. I am a big MGS fan and yet i ignored it completely after the first story trailer and didnt even bother checking out the beta or the launch trailer. The only reason I even tried the game was because i had a free redbox code and one of my friends kept telling me he would get it if i got it. Before that tuesday, i had no idea a MGS game was even releasing.

Oddly enough, those 1.5-2 hours i spent on the rental convinced me that this game had the potential to be good. I was a bit annoyed by the focus on melee and the constant survival aspect, but even that early on I could tell this game was going to be different and engaging. After every mission, I was rewarded with a new item or weapon. I got the spear and unlocked the sprint attack almost immediately. the wormhole defenses got hectic rather quickly and the rush i got from defending them and going into the dust and frantically battling the oxygen, the hunger and thirst, and the horde of zombies convinced me that this game is by no means bad. I dont know if I am ok with gamers like Dunkey and Jimquistition for writing this off after two hours because even that early on I could tell this was going to be good. A different kind of good but I am ok with devs trying different things.

the Bestbuy $10 giftcard for buying it convinced me to pick it up the next day for $22 and i have played it for at least 2 hours every day since. It's good to have your faith rewarded.

The funny thing is that post game ditches a lot of the survival aspects. Food is plentiful. I am literally donating hundreds of zebra meats because i cant carry them. I have like five rainwater tanks mass producing water and Ammo is plentiful in coop missions, the main end game. You get ammo resupply by the second wave, then walker gear for the third along with enough materials to bullet auto turrets or manual turrets. I still play melee because its so much fun playing with these elemental weapons with all kinds of cool perks. The dailies having elemental damage buffs is exactly what made Destiny heroic strikes so much fun in year 2 and 3. Something MGS devs borrowed and Bungie themselves ignored in Destiny 2. I was doing 5k damage per swing last weekend with my frost machete and extra damage buff for the dual sword.

The coop trailer they released by launch is what they should have showed as the reveal trailer. I never saw it but it shows all the cool things you can do in the game.

I love reading impressions. It's why i still come on forums. Discord and reddit are full of one line replies that just arent fulfilling tbh. I used to get into days long discussions on gamespot and literally two decades later some of us are still friends.

I love how many options are available to me at any given moment. Sometimes i still get overwhelmed and choke, but then I look at my inventory and I am like why didnt I use one of these 20 different things I had equipped. In an age where most games limit you to one side arm, one primary and two grenade slots. This game gives you three side arms, three primary weapons, and up to 12 different gadget slots. i have 16 auto turrets defending my base but i spawn rape everyone before they even get to my base. grenades, sprint attacks, turrets, shottys, mines, baloon traps, explosive barrels, motolovs, C4s and those are just the offensive gadgets. I just unlocked the iron watchtower and the spinning wooden barbwire yesterday. 3 weeks after i started playing. That's nuts.

There are so many resources and things to find at
the mansion
, had to do a couple runs and got lost in the jungle. Long runs like that really remind me of souls games where you desperately don't want to lose your progress.

[..snip..snip.. throughout your post..]

As I've said plenty of times I'm not a massive MGs fan but I'll generally look on any new game to see how it is, and I was pretty much the same, saw the initial trailer and shrugged it off. I didn't feel any great anonymity toward it for any reason I just thought "meh" and forgot about it, I only really noticed it launch due to the "backlash". Had they maybe done separate trailers highlighting survival aspects, horror, story then co-op, with different tones (like the trailer you mentioned) it could have helped greatly. That co-op trailer was excellent, I honestly thought it was fan made.

I also kept playing because of the starting few hours, I love Don't starve and similar and the survival fighting for food/gear is my bag. I like a game which starts difficult, I learn, do a little grinding and get better until those early worries are mostly gone and I've a stockpile to get lost in the end game with little stress. I much prefer it to a more traditional start easy, become difficult. That's despite me saying the start is pretty weak, I'd still say in the general aspect it's the weakest part.

This game did the same for me, but crucially also mixed it up a little in the third act with
Map two, the more aggressive and denser groups of enemies
it knocked me out of my comfort zone and back to early game, I had to rethink, relearn and re-arm get a little annoyed and then bam! Rewarded with
ruins 3 and the mansion, a clearer area, spookier vibe and the stress of being a long way from a teleporter with a dense jungle to backtrack through

Thats just single player, so there's still the fun of MP to take part in.

Though I tend not to partake in long messages I enjoy reading well written posts and thats kind of why I felt a little guilty about not at least leaving a note to doff the old cap after you and aember had gone to so much effort.

I just got my first purple from MP, a broken frost skull machete, looks fun :)

I'm able to actually craft it but I'm unsure what the red "locks" mean, there's a restriction to survivor lvl 30 (which I am) and two perks with red locks, any ideas?

It has a separate menu option to unlock perks, same place you go to select Customize/Strengthen.

Sigh, I really wish more people played this. A friend and I are trying to matchmake on PC in Europe right now and we just get no one at all.
Trying to do the rescue missions by ourselves is....not easy.

Sigh, I really wish people would have given this game a fair chance.

If only there was cross play, it would be excellent for these situations. :/
Yeah, it's not like there's PvP so PC players wouldn't exactly be able to gain any advantage over console players. If anything, PC players having any kind of advantage would help console players they got matched up with.

Yeah, fuck those things. The mission where
five dozen show up in the cramped underground room
had me just lobbing molotovs and arrows at them for ten minutes going "ewwwwww" every time more swarmed out.

I just got that Frost Skull Machete as well. Happy about that since I've been needing a better two handed weapon.

I completely forgot you can do heavy attacks with the X button (while holding LT). Animation is very slow but there's a perk to increase the speed. Might unlock that just to see the difference.

Using the running attack for mobs of enemies is very satisfying.

I also took a look at my equipment. Switched some things around to give myself a little more stamina. I can use a purple gear with 3 locked perks that increases DEF or use a blue gear with lower defense but it has a perk that is unlocked and can give me a stat increase.

Because I'm mostly a long range player (because of the bow) I could afford to have a little less DEF.

This weekend I'll put more time into rescue missions. Might have to plug in a mic, lol.

Farm for good survivors and send all your useless staff on suicide missions + farm for those instruction books in base defense to improve the stats of individual members.
It's a tough grind.

I haven't had a survivor pop up since I turned LVL 38, I'm now 50, and which Survivors do I cut, they all pretty much have the same details and moods.

I only just realized there's tapes after being able to build the broadcast device. The Charon Corps was so faceless but the research logs help with that. Wish I'd found them sooner.

I haven't had a survivor pop up since I turned LVL 38, I'm now 50, and which Survivors do I cut, they all pretty much have the same details and moods.
Check out this guide. I got a Geist P30 (yellow tier), it needed a B-rank Dev team to make and that left me with a great big "how the hell do I rank up the teams, these descriptions don't do it for me." Found that guide and the next day I had the Geist in my loadout!

You want to definitely cut the ones that only have "will do poorly" in their description for every team.
Even "will not perform very well" is better than "poorly"

Cheers, will try this tonight.

The whole crew management thing is just ridiculous. They put all that information in there like occupation and motivation that makes you think they'd be good at something, but none of it matters on bit except for the "will perform poorly/well" part. It's so stupid and they don't explain it at all.

On another note. I'm drawn between which co-op mode I want to play. I love getting all the materials from rescue missions, but I still need to level up my character some more and need kuban energy to do that, so I should be playing scavenger missions.

Missable endgame achievement note, in case you care :)

I had a vague idea of the easily missed achievement at the end of the game
Where you follow Chris through the portal, then when you load again you're in the same place and can continue as usual. I forgot to follow Chris and completed the final waves only remembering on the way to the rail gun. As an FYI it's not too late at this point, you can run back up to Chris's portal and go through, getting the Achievement and reloading puts you back ready for the rail gun again.
So it's still easy to miss but if you forget you're able to get it still before the very end. If you've fully completed the mission though, I suspect you're still out of luck.

Just in case someone does what I did :)

From 'quake area to big OH.
I need to fire the generator for the second time. But I know there are going to be wanderers everywhere.

The stairs to motherbase appeared at chapter 15 for me. But nothing was accessible.

Just had the best team I've ever had on rescue. I swear every other time when I do rescue, I get people that spawn and run right for the digger and trigger the horde, but this time with no mics no communication we all worked so fluidly it was flawless. S rank in a breeze, we had myself setting up all defenses at the extract and along the path, we had assault taking out all oncomers, we had medic doing the extract, and we had another support going and hunting mortars and doing side missions. Don't think I'll get a team this good again for a while... Lol

Okay got past that part... but man I am running out of Materials!
Should I do Salvage missions? I never did the coop and I might be not much of a help...

Man did I just have a very very rough login.
I was doing the Plan 3 Base Dig and was on the third wave. last night before I went to bed I checked my defenses. The wave prediction was 8500 from north and west so I put about 13000 defense on each of these sides.
Today I log in and literally my entire base is destroyed. All animals gone. all farms. all tents all workshops etc...
The base dig also failed.
I check the defense history and instead of the 8500 it showed me yesterday, each of the sides was attack by 19000 and totally overran my 13000 defenses.

WHAT
THE
FUCK

Now I had to rebuild my entire base and didn't even get a reward for two days of base dig :(

What level are you? It's possible to join in before lvl 20 but you'll be less help the lower you are at raw damage. You should be able to help backstabbing, placing defences and running off to side missions at low level. I've not found I get a chance to craft (either teams starting too early or not gathering enough) much while in MP though so I'm using stuff I've crafted outside MP, in that respect you may end up spending more than you make.

As I've mentioned I love grinding and exploring so I've (until recently) not had any mats issues but if you do a loop of teleporters and those sheds around each you should be able to gather up a decent amount, do a few side missions and search for containers while you wait for them to reset (though I appreciate you're on the second map, so it's not as many). It shouldn't be much longer before you can get back though, it may make sense to slog on until you can get back.

Klyka Aww man! :(

Scouts hammer throw ability is great.

Throw distance is like 3x. Bombers explode after being thrown once. Knocks down all enemies in the way.
