I wish there were more non-serious sport pods with great personalities, also more that analyze black movies

With 2017 almost over, think I'll list my favorite podcasts that I discovered this year

Awful Grace - Excellent journalism series that blends on-the-street audio, police scanner dispatches, interviews, and other sources
Forensic Transmissions - Fascinating excerpts from various public audio, from harrowing 911 calls to chilling serial killer interrogations
The Scientific Odyssey - A science history podcast that spans everything from Galileo's struggles with the Church to Einstein developing his theory of relativity
The World According To Sound - A unique series where each episode features a unique sound and context/history about it: a raging forest fire, inside a green room, blood pumping through a brain artery, etc
Medieval Death Trip - Interesting history podcast that reads primary documents - notes, letters, records and statements, etc - from medieval times, and explores the context behind them
Medieval History For Fun & Profit - Two historians answer questions about medieval history, dispelling myths and offering the truths behind medieval sex, slavery, criminal justice, and more
Fairy Tales For Unwanted Children - A well-written audiodrama that injects unsettling eerie elements into fairytale-style stories
Trailblazers - A series that looks at the story of technologies/companies that disrupted their industries, from Netflix to Jaws to the rise of automobiles

Oh man CrimeWav sounds interesting. I love the crime noir genre, and a while back I downloaded a pod called the Penumbra podcast which is a detective audio drama. I haven't had a chance to listen yet because I fell in to the Magnus Archives rabbit hole lol. Has anyone listened to Penumbra, and is it any good?

Shamelessly self-promoting a podcast I started a few months ago:

Welcome to Watch. Review. Repeat. This is the podcast where two best friends discuss the latest in film and television and do it all over again the following week!

We've just released our13th episode, covering Stranger Things 2. We were joined by one of our friends, who co-hosts the podcast Ink to Film, and the whole experience was a blast. We've mostly been sharing with friends and family, so I'm trying to grow our audience beyond that by sharing here. Hopefully some of you all check us out and enjoy it enough to explore our back catalog or subscribe for future episodes!

And to keep this a little bit more on topic, I really enjoy a lot of the podcasts on the Planet Broadcasting Network. The Weekly Planet and Filthy Casuals are two that I will never miss an episode on. The Dollop is also great stuff.

This is maybe my twelfth expedition into the podcast world, but I always become overwhelmed and run away two weeks in. My problem is that I whenever I find a new way to consume, I can't help but migrate completely to that new thing, so I try to find podcasts for all or most my interests (and there's a lot) so I don't have to switch between various media platforms or social networks. So this time I'm just going to subscribe to a few real quality podcasts while keeping up with most news through a RSS feed.

When and how do you folks listen to podcasts? I imagine multitasking is prevalent among pod listeners, but I find that I don't really remember anything when I do – neither from the podcast or the other activity. Walks outside the city are pretty much the only thing that works. Do any of you guys just lay in bed/sit in the sofa while listening?

If I'm not listening to music, watching a movie or show, reading a book, playing a story-heavy game or a game with strong sound design/music, or talking with family and friends, then I'm probably listening to podcasts and/or audiobooks. While I'm eating, walking, driving, playing games, doing stuff around the house, etc

I'm subscribed to hundreds of podcasts, so I tend to cycle through them over a month or so, with new episodes from my favorites being placed at the top of queue when they come out

I was excited to find there was a new season of heavyweight out. I really enjoyed the first season, and it took a little while for the second season to release. I would definitely recommend the show it has some great stories and lots of witty humor, and some people might be familiar with the host, Johnathan Goldstein who was a contributor and producer on This American Life. The stories are always interesting and the show is well edited and produced.

So, I feel like Jad is really checked out of Radiolab now. Like, he'll be in the intro and after-break intro, and then that's it. It's basically Robert's show now.

Could NeoScum be added to Audiodramas/Humor? (Or I guess Gaming? Idk, the categories kind of overlap.)

It's a wild and blisteringly funny comedy podcast with five Chicago improvisers playing a neon-80s action movie version of Shadowrun. It's crude and outrageous with super flexible and adaptive GMing and an "anything could happen" vibe but also very tightly paced and edited.

It's honestly a must for people that really like energetic comedy podcasts and don't mind a little adventure narrative alongside it. Probably closest to The Adventure Zone in form but it's more character driven and improvisational and less focused on plot and overarching narrative in the way that Griffin crafted this insanely intricate mystery for the Tres Horny Boys to unravel. Which fucking rocks, obviously, but in NeoScum the players have more influence on the elements of the world in a way that makes it feel a lot more like a long, guided improv scene. Different niches that work well alongside each other. Also shares similar blood with Hello From The Magic Tavern since they're also Chicago improv guys and the show unravels very quickly in response to the events and topics that came before it (being improv).

If you're gonna check it out, I'd probably recommend checking out the intro the cast and characters up top in the first episode then jump right to episode 18 to see what the show is like now and see if it's something you'd be into. The first few episodes aren't the best indicator of what the show becomes (especially because it's four episodes before they start recording in a studio). Seriously though, so funny."

So, if self-promotion is allowed, I thought I'd take a post to shill for a podcast I'm involved in, Bull Moose Comics. As the name suggests, we're a comics-focused podcast. We review 5 books a week in a roundtable format, with each host nominating one book and a final book being selected by consensus. We're mostly oriented towards cape comics, but we do do other stuff on occasion. We also cover comics and comics-related news, and do a weekly Book Club where we review and discuss an older completed series. We're not terribly rigorous, but we like to think we're reasonably funny.

We're all ERA-ers now (Myself, ShinJohnpv , SeanShards and LaunchpadMcQ ), but we started during the GAF days. No public affiliation with either site, though - it's about the comics and the personalities, not the forums. Major achievements include actually covering Valiant Comics and getting blocked by Greg Capullo on Twitter, though that just happened. On iTunes and Google Play and a couple other places, for those interested.

Anyone excited for Jeff Gerstmann and Dave Lang's upcoming podcast Ima Fix Wolves? As Lang put it "Two old white guys teach you about hip hop." I love the two of them together so I'm really looking forward to it.

I don't particularly care about the subject matter, but I like the two hosts so I'll give it a shot. I'm also interested to see the reaction it gets if it becomes even slightly popular.

I fucking love NeoScum. Got introduced to it via One Shot, which is also good, although by virtue of the rotating guests for each one shot, it can sometimes be real boring. An unfortunate reality. One shot's Campaign (a Star Wars actual play podcast) is consistently really fucking good, though. Static cast, hilarious. Kat makes a great DM. I don't even like Star Wars, not really!

So yeah I highly recommend NeoScum and Campaign. And while I'm at it, I also like The Infinite Bad, an actual play from the folks who do Mars Corp and did The Bunker. (Both also very good, but not actual plays.) Okay, that's enough.

Also, I think The Adventure Zone got far too big for Griffin to properly handle! Welp, okay, see ya.

I thought The Adventure Zone was pretty good, but when it became less about goofs and more about world building and building the narrative I lost interest really fast.

Yeah, I've lost interest in Adventure Zone as well. It was best when it was just fun improvisational chaos with the framework of the narrative of a campaign

My favorites tabletop podcasts now are Cthulhu & Friends and Party of One

If that's what you're after, you guys should really listen to NeoScum. I mention it earlier in the thread, but it's a cast of actual improvisers so that's its strength: wild, hilarious improvisational storytelling.

At one point, the characters decide to abandon the story thread that was building and go to LA. The GM just roles with anything and shapes the narrative off of the players' choices.

I've been recommending that people listen to the character/cast introduction in the first episode and then skip to episode 18 to see what the show has become. Or maybe episode 14. Or maybe... idk, the show just gets better as it goes.

The latest episode of the Adam Buxton podcast was absolutely fantastic. It's an interview with Hassan Akkad, a refugee from Syria who managed to get across to the UK and has been in London for two years now.

Even though Adam doesn't typically do heavy interviews like this I think he did a good job of giving Akkad space to tell him story and finding a little levity when he could.

I had very little awareness of the actual experience of refugees before listening, so I found it incredibly informative, and I'll be downloading the Timepeace app mentioned once it releases.

The latest 30-for-30 podcast is about the birth of the UFC and is very interesting. They interview most of the fighters and do a good job breaking down exactly how the first event went down. I don't care about UFC or MMA at all but still found it captivating.

Thanks so much!
