The fact they announced the 2019 game at the same time shows they knew it'd be divisive and that they have a game in the works that'll, hopefully, be a bigger leap forward.

This is Game Freak getting a handle on HD 3D game development as well as a good opportunity to bring in new fans and those who might have fell off. It isn't the future of the entire franchise, if anything it means the 2019 "core" game won't have to be as handhold-y.

I have qualms with it (no wild battles just seems really confusing from a leveling perspective, mandatory gyro is terrible, not evolving the literal Evolution Pokémon is silly) but it's not like Pokémon is now doomed.

Really they should have given the game a proper Direct rather than this scattershot approach to news that's got everyone all flummoxed.

Game looks beautiful. Not a fan of no wild battles but at least the game's doing something really new for the series.

Seems like this exists partially because it makes sense to have a Go-inspired Pokemon spinoff and partially because they wanted to ship a Pokemon Switch game in 2018 and something that could easily recycle Go's assets was a safer way to do that than rushing out a full normal game.

The way they are announcing both games at once is very reminiscent of when they announced Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Prime 4 at the same time, practically.
The closer analogy would probably be how they announced Metroid Fusion and Metroid Prime at the same time- they knew people would be worried about Prime being an FPS so they announced a 2D game at the same time.

Beyond that they pretty clearly learned their lesson from Federation Force- when you announce a weird spinoff, make sure you eliminate any worry the fans may have that they're not going to get any "normal" games anymore.

Wait. No wild battles? I'm confused. They showed catching Pokémon in the trailer.
No wild pokemon battles to capture Pokemon. You capture in a similar manner to Pokemon Go. Pokemon appear and disappear in the world. You still have battles against trainers though.

Now it's been a while since I've played Pokemon Go but from what I recall you couldn't just capture any and all Pokemon. There were still things that made it easier or harder to do from what I remember and some you couldn't get until you were a higher level?

I have a theory this game might actually bode well for Gen 8. I think this is Gamefreak, hopefully, optimistically, realizing they have 2 distinct fans of the series. Those who want a simpler, easier, more Pokemon Go like experience and those who want a deeper experience. Rather than trying to appease both with 1 set of games they've made this for the former group and for the core group Gamefreak won't have to remove features because of "kids with smartphones" or make things simpler because "kids couldn't finish the games" or anything like that

Hopefully
I hope that you're right.

What's frustrating here is that these games with some tweaks could *easily* have made longtime fans happy as well as new players. Like ok I get gen 8 is next year and I still have that coming, but it'd be nice to also be excited about this year's game. Just make the motion controls optional, the go-style capturing optional, and at the very least have non-Kanto Pokemon appear in the post-game. Keep everything else basically the same and oh shit look at that suddenly everyone is happy.

Go off? I'm just saying if you consider a Pokemon game "bloated", I can only imagine what other, more feature rich, games are like
The Pokemon games have a ridiculous amount of things to do and collect and as someone who finds myself to be a completionist they are some of the most daunting games out there. Seriously, what other single player games take as long as a Pokemon game to truly max out? The Pokemon games are some of the most bloated games out there in terms of feature/content creep. Your insinuation that I can't deal with large games is weird; Pokemon is just really ridiculously bloated.

Soooo am I the only who thinks it's great that random battles are gone and I can actually pick which pokemon I wanna engage with? This thread clearly scream "I don't want change >:("
I want a Poke Trainer experience.
And from what I have gathered from the animation over the years is that Ash is usually not stopped every 5 steps by Ratatas and Pidgeys.
He can usually see them and choose to engage.
Which...hey that is how it seems to work in the game *and go

This is precisely my thinking as well. I 100% see Let's Go! selling really well and there being sequels that are "inspired by" johto. They will alternate every year with the hardcore "core" games.

Let's be honest, this is going to sell like gangbusters then the game in 2019 will sell even more because it will pull more people into it.
Yeah, I can see that happening. Kinda feel like they're using these games to test a couple ideas out before putting them in the next new gen games. I'm kind of ok with Pokemon being visible in overworld.

Seems like the sources were right this time. I was wrong, I made myself an idiot for saying these leaks are cheap fakes but screw it, I don't regret it : D

Besides the stupid names of these editions, I think this looks quite nice, even if it isn't a mainline game.

But I ask the following: Will I be able to enjoy the game without Pokemon Go? Is Pokemon Go in any mean requiered to enjoy the game besides getting a few extra catches? I don't care about the gyrosensor because I mostly play on my TV anyway, but if I'm forced to use Pokemon Go here I'm out unfortunately.

That's funny. Amazon had LGP up with logo and everything, but not LGE. Now they took the logo off of LGP and have a generic switch icon instead, but it's still available. Wonder what they're up to.

So will this be compatible with Pokémon bank at all? Will we be able to send he Pokémon from this game to the 2019 game? Or are they stuck in the "Let's Go" side games?

Its funny how you guys are saying itll appeal to kids. I showed this to my 10 year old brother who loves pokemon. While he loved the beginning of the trailer, once the GO mechanics were apparent and only the original 151 are the only ones available he lost interest. Oh well. One less game I need to buy this holiday season.

After 1 trailer you want to decide if the game is worth 60 dollars or not?

Yes, I am. You're actually going to say that a game where you only get 151 pokemon out of the 807
that exist with a neutered catching system should cost the same as a traditional pokemon RPG
that contains all the normal features and monsters? (Gen 8 will obviously also be priced at $60)

Nah

Holy crap. I love the look of this. And a traditional 'core' title next year is fine with me, I'm happy to give this a go in the meantime.

The more I think about this, the more it makes sense.

They've successfully carved a platform for Pokemon to exist in a digital social era with GO, now they've found a way to bridge it to the traditional franchise.

They took the GO brand massmarket exposure and created a new venue for Pokemon that can exist for casual users and for those who want more.

Keeps the Pokemon culture fresh, new kids and older fans will be involved. I was just asking my coworker today why they never made a tamagotchi type app and Pokemon has easily captured that slot.

I'm more into this 2019 game but I'll prob still pick this up.

Uh, so without wild pokemon battles how do we catch Pokemon? Only from the smartphone game GO?

Because that's not my cup o' tea. I've got time for exactly one smartphone game and that's it. Too many other things to balance in a healthy life.
