The fact they announced the 2019 game at the same time shows they knew it'd be divisive and that they have a game in the works that'll, hopefully, be a bigger leap forward.
This is Game Freak getting a handle on HD 3D game development as well as a good opportunity to bring in new fans and those who might have fell off. It isn't the future of the entire franchise, if anything it means the 2019 "core" game won't have to be as handhold-y.
I have qualms with it (no wild battles just seems really confusing from a leveling perspective, mandatory gyro is terrible, not evolving the literal Evolution Pokémon is silly) but it's not like Pokémon is now doomed.
Really they should have given the game a proper Direct rather than this scattershot approach to news that's got everyone all flummoxed.
