Once again, charms will change your experience radically. I know I couldn't let go of some of them after a while:
In no particular order:
  • Compass
  • Sprintmaster
  • Dashmaster
  • Steady Body
  • Mark of Pride
  • Quick Focus (I would say mandatory for some bosses depending on playstyle)
  • Grubsong
  • Nailmaster's Glory (although I didn't use that one that much, as timing charged attacks was still tricky)

I think I know the answer to this, but if Ori was my GOTY back in 2015 is this game worth a pickup? Don't know anything about it outside of seeing all the hype on Era since the Switch version came out.

Are there any damage calculations for how much more powerful charge attacks are compared to regular attacks?

It's annoying that an early game area like that doesn't let you get the map until practically endgame.

Heh am I this far already? I used the bop enemy ability to make that jump, but yeah on my way to the second mask. It had to be intentional because the layout is a bit confusing, I think they wanted you to get lost for a bit. btw I loved the moment where
your warrior buddy (don't know his name) joins in on the Metroid fight

I have to read up on the lore later, the story's a bit of a blur for me so far. Way too focused on the actual game.

I think I know the answer to this, but if Ori was my GOTY back in 2015 is this game worth a pickup? Don't know anything about it outside of seeing all the hype on Era since the Switch version came out.
Absolutely.

The only thing I'm not too keen on so far is the combat. It feels very rote and boring, but that seems to be most 2D games of these styles thes days. I'm hoping it opens up a little in that regard as you unlock more abilities.

IMO the best thing about the combat isn't exactly your moveset but the enemy patterns, which are easily the best I've seen in a 2D game. The flow between jumping/dodging and getting a hit in before narrowly dodging again feels super good against tougher bosses (very similar to my experience with Souls games). One of the best ways to attack is from above depending on the enemies, jumping on their heads with the nail never gets old. You'll get a few more options for the combat though.

Are there any damage calculations for how much more powerful charge attacks are compared to regular attacks?

x2.5 base nail damage.

Thanks.

Oh yeah by the way, don't go to the Wiki unless you want major spoilers.

Yeah the one time I went on there, it was simply to see if there was boss HP listings. Even searching specifically for the boss I was stuck on I managed to trip on a few lore and item spoilers. Nothing major, but that's what I get for being a helpless numbers guy who refuses to come back later and stronger when I can kick butt now.

finally got down to the City of Tears with a nail upgrade and some abilities
Dashmaster, second dash (that lets you go down), Wall Jump
and finally getting somewhere in the game, fuck the magic fatbugs and the boss in that area though, so annoying to fight

This game is good.

Infact, it's so good that it made me learn to code immediately after I beat it, and spend 8 months building my own metroidvania.

That's how good it is.

Immediate double dip on Switch.

i don't like the map mechanic in this at all.
I don't mind that I need to find the map to an area. I don't mind that I need to go back to a bench to fill my explored areas. But the map itself is crap. Why can I not zoom any further? Have the time, I can't see over the icons anyway.

Yea I am not a fan of the map. Also the placement of benches/fast travel seems a bit inconsistent. I just got to I think hornet was the name and I had to go through so much to get there and not a save or travel point in site. Lost about 700 whatever the money units are and not confident about even getting back to the boss let alone beating her.

There's a bench super close to Hornet.

This flying bug fight above thorns in the queen's gardens is more annoying than any boss fight. To make matters worse, the game has crashed twice now during it.
Edit: phew, made it.

I don't mind the sit at a bench to fill it what you've seen. I hate having to find the stupid idiot to buy parchment to start making a map, I hate having to waste a charm spot just to have a marker of my location on the map, and I hate that for things like the light trees that the game doesn't gray them out when you've used them up.

There is, actually, a save point near Hornet. Look for the sign posts. A Stag Station will always have a save point.

The trees you use the Dream Nail on? The map removes their markers. At least it has for me.

I think you have to update the map at a bench first.

Got to play a bunch more, just past the
Mantis Lords now. Incredible boss fight! Quirrel showed up and told me to go get a weapon upgrade first but I just kind of ignored him. I also thought I was being sneaky by not following Hornet when I saw her earlier but I guess I needed the upgrade anyways, so jokes on me.

Now that I've gotten some more upgrades I think I'll backtrack and see what secrets I can find. So far I've only gotten:
Vengeful Spirit, Dash, Walljump, 1/4 health upgrades (I think), another badge slot and a couple badges.

My only fear is that the game will end soon! Hope there's still a bunch more to go.

Hey guys! Started this 4/5 hours ago and have been exploring the city of tears. Any estimate on how far into the game I am? I know there were 3 expansions but I have no clue whether they've been blended in to the overall game or if I'll play them after I beat the main game.

Really enjoying it so far, very intense. It's almost too much freedom, I keep burying down with no clue if I'm going in the right direction, reminds me of dark souls

If it helps ease your worries, you're like at the beginning.

If anyone's having trouble with Lost Kin (like I am), equip
the Spore Shroom Charm. It destroys his adds.

So I'm currently very unsure on what to do. I think I have fought some mini bosses. I got my power that works by tapping A. I also got this pin. I saw a place that needed a slot, and I thought the pin would go there, and open something for me. But that did not seem to be the case

Currently just going around in circles, not finding something new, and some of the new I find, seems to be out of reach

Any tips?

No idea what to do, where to go next, or if I'm doing something wrong

Base game is about 30 to 40 hours.

This game is tough as hell - and hard to know where to go next - but it controls like a dream and is interesting enough to keep going! But in the end its a lot of fun - great buy for $15!

Find a bench to equip the charm you just got. Next find the map guy, Cornifer. He'll be down the well, somewhere along the second level. Look for the paper lying around and he'll be humming when you get closer to him. Save up and buy the quill and the Wayward Charm. They'll be invaluable in mapping the game. That should be a good start for you.

Kinda stuck after getting dash... I think I've explored everywhere but not sure where to go.

I found the charm shop and the jellyfish area (which has these dark barriers so I assume I'm not supposed to be there yet...)

Troupe Master Grimm...argh -.- need a pause, that guy makes my head spin with his ultra fast attacks. The bullet hell section no problem, but the fast change between those spikey pillars and the uppercut gets me every time...had him two times as a bat, thought ok now it´s over, fight keeps going on like forever..

Try searching around in the lower areas of crossroads for a spot where the dash is necessary for progression.

Thank you!

As for charm, I only have two that the game gave me early on. The most recent one was to get more souls off enemies. The other thing I got, the pin, does not seem to be a charm. It's like an item, like the map, but not sure what it does. I thought it would unluck something that needed a pin, it looked like a door. But it either did not open it, was not meant for that, or I did it wrong

I saw the map guy for the first time, and you're right the second time he is not there, he left a note, and there was paper around. I guess I will try finding him again

Finished the game with 62% completion, I assume I got a bad ending.
I fought the Hollow Knight inside the egg and took his place after killing him.

I haven't fully explored the Queen's Gardens, or gone to the Kingdom's Edge at all, so I'll go check those out I guess.
