Only two weeks to go for Oathbringer. Getting harder to distract myself from this fact. I was really hoping we'd see Kindle Match come back for its release... not looking forward to hauling another monster tome around for weeks while I finish it.
Can I confessed here that I have love-hate relationship with Sanderson? :p
I'm certainly wouldn't do that. I love Anderson as equally as I hate him. I have one novel of him that I love completely though and it's The Alloy of Law.Very few people like things without qualification if they are being honest. The range of opinion in this community, at least historically from our last forum, is pretty large. As long as you are being reasonable in criticism and don't come off like a thread crapping troll you'll be fine.
lol that's funny, Alloy of Law is the only book of his I've read (and I've read everything in the Cosmere, at least) which I didn't really like much at allI'm certainly wouldn't do that. Very glad this thread made the jump! Love Sanderson, and can't wait to continue with The Stormlight Archive.
In the meantime, I'm on my... 4th attempt to finish Elantris? I love everything I've read by Sanderson, but Elantris has been tough to stick for me. I have a long commute once a week, so I've been powering through the audiobook. I'm really fascinated by how I can find it equal parts wonderful and tediuous... but I'm liking it more the further I make it,
I just realized I have less than a fortnight now to finish up Warbreaker and Arcanum Unbound before book 3. Damn I'm looking forward to it.
In terms of love-hate with Sanderson, it's not really hate but I won't even bother to read his stuff outside the cosmere. It just doesn't interest me at all for some reason.
Yeah, there are neat nuggets in there especially as it goes on, but the fact that it is his first published work really shows. My wife trailed off on Elantris maybe 100 pages in and never went back. Thankfully it isn't terribly long and, at least so far, isn't super important on a larger Cosmere level.
Oathbringer is the most pre-ordered title in Audible's history. Pretty cool.
Weelllll they're "introduced" but the shardpools as an entity are really more well established in Mistborn Secret History tbhEh, the shardpools are introduced in Elantris, and I reckon Sel must be pretty important as a hub world because of them.

Thanks for the heads up! I opted into both the Table of Contents and Community Spotlight. Hopefully we can wrangle in more Cosmere fans... or make some new ones. :P
It's probably a good idea to read Warbreaker before continuing but it's not required.Reading WoK for the first time, 900 pages into the book. The world building is so good and for some reason i remember Berserk when reading it. I really like it and can't wait to catch up to you guys with Oathbringer. Just bought the Mistborn trilogy last week too.
Been meaning to ask, should i continue to WoR after WoK or should i read his other works since they are somewhat related before starting WoR?
It's probably a good idea to read Warbreaker before continuing but it's not required.
Finding it very difficult to make it through Edgedancer. I detest Lift and Sanderson's "how do you do, fellow kids?" dialogue (awesomeness, etc...)
I also think he tries too hard when writing women. I enjoyed Shallan and Jasnah in Stormlight, until I realized that almost all of his female characters in other works are written almost exactly the same. Like the character in his book with the magical parrot/birds or whatever. That's Shallan almost exactly.

Re: Lift. I agree about Lift in general, and would like to reiterate sentiments I expressed in GAF that we need to see her mature some as time goes on. She can be painful to read. Though I did like her a bit more by the end of Edgedancer, I've seen the word "awesomeness" enough for the rest of my life.
In regards to "try too hard"... i don't know exactly what I mean. I suppose it was a poor choice of words. And perhaps I'm being a bit uncharitable.
Regarding Lift. Can she mature?I believe her boon/curse is that she won't be able to mentally age or mature as a person. She's 13, but doesn't act 13. She acts more like 10. Which is the age she was when she went to the Nightwatcher or whatever it is called. We know she can physically age. The thieves at the very beginning of Edgedancer peg her as being at least 12, based on her appearance.
also...yeah, whether or not she can seems to be the big question. We had a decent discussion around this issue before and there's really no consensus. All I know is I can't read the word awesomeness anymore haha.
it appears the old magic CAN somehow be broken and again what this means for Lift is anyone's guess. The Stormfather says Dalinar's restored memory has nothing to do with him but maybe the storm light heals the spiritweb damage done by the Nightwatchers boon/curse? Would the Stormfather's statement still be true if it were the storm light? So many questions!
Also want to reiterate how I love Era's spoiler titles.
Well considering that Lift willbe one of the main protagonists of the second arc of novels (books 6-10), I certainly hope she will have matured by then :lol
Wait wait hold on...
Dalinar has restored memory? I somehow completely forgot that... When does he remember his dead wife?
Am I misremembering because I seem to recall Lift starts talking in a more mature manner at the end of the book, illustrating that a lot of her persona is an act that she puts on to stay young.
yep, in chapter 16. He and Navani have discussed it several times since, as well.
That's certainly part of the thought process.Edgedancer did quite a bit to make us question exactly what the nature of Lift's boon and curse are.
No... that's why I labeled the spoilers "Oathbringer Preview Chapters" each time.
Ah what the heck, now I see a trade paperback on Amazon.ca releasing on Nov 14... why did they wait so long to list this? I didn't even know it was being published at the same time as the hardcover; probably would have pre-ordered it instead. Well too late now, as it's already in a larger order with various discounts applied.
I assume by your reaction you are ok with that? I was a little worried but then I was like "but, that's why I labeled the spoiler". So... we ok? Lol
Re: TPB of Oathbringer: I think it's either a mistake or a listing of a foreign edition. Amazon US is also showing a german edition TPB for like $40 haha
I personally am never bothered by spoilers, which is why I was clicking them. I got confused and misread one of yours and that's why I thought maybe it was also brought up in Book 2 potentially.
definitely
