Honestly I would be happy if the bulk of the DLC was just more unique events for the monastery. Like holidays in Persona. The White Heron cup and the fishing tournament is a good example.

Are there any good spoiler free videos about this game? Friends are interested in the game but all the video reviews have massive spoilers on them.

It's my first Fire Emblem and I am having a blast. After missing a worthy successor to FFT for a long time, how could i have been sleeping on this series? For people who are FE vets, which one would you say has the best story? (not route, i mean fe game altogether)

I also got to thank the good folks who insisted I should give a shot at hard/classic. It does not feel too challenging at all, in fact it's rather easy so far. I just finished chapter 12 of the BE route...

Gotta say I did *not* expect Edelgard to be the flame emperor. I decided to side with her because Rhea gives me the creeps, also my Edelgard is just ridiculously OP so I could not let her die. Lost my flayn dancer though - I hate myself for no choosing dorothea.
The battle of gareg mach did feel like a significant step up in difficulty. Chapter 11 was like a joke, but 12 with his two golems, 5 sub bosses and pretty tough Rhea felt like a bit of a challenge...
Also the timeskip is the best idea ever. Really enjoy seeing the updated portrait!

Tbh, in terms of story/characters none of the previous games are quite as strong as 3H. The ones that come the closest are FE4/5 for it's heavy worldbuilding and really ballsy plot for it's time, though most of the characters themselves are pretty forgettable. The Tellius games, Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, also have some interesting storytelling bits and characters as well, but honestly Three Houses puts them all to shame. Sacred Stones has the best story and characters of the GBA games. Not fantastic, but much better than FE7's, though I like FE6's quite a bit (it's my personal favorite FE).

FE: Echoes has a great localization and fun characters and fun story as well, but I wouldn't call the latter great and it's got some real scuffed map design to say the least.

Couple of questions from someone 250 hours in who still fails at life sometimes. :P

1. Utilizing NG+ features allows a player to purchase support levels with various characters all the way to S-rank in certain cases. Purchasing S-rank, however, doesn’t make any sense to me. That’s an ending aspect, so what does purchasing it with renown prior to the ending actually achieve?

2. Spending renown on the final statue upgrades — the ones which boost maximum stat pairs. This... allows a given stat to increase beyond a threshold of 50? I think?

3. I played on Normal originally and now I’m playing on Hard. Even now, I rarely pay any attention to battalions. When I complete paralogues and I’m congratulated with message boxes informing me that I’ve earned a battalion it’s in one ear and out the other. Am I missing something, or are they just all that relevant at least until Lunatic difficulty releases?

4. Is there any way to build an even remotely steady stream of rare ores? lol

Oh, and before I forget: if you stand around for a while in the monastery after the bell rings once, it will ring again and the sky will darken. Neat little bit of irrelevance!

1. S-Ranks do have a bigger support bonus in battle than A-Ranks, you just never see them except on NG+.

2. That's right.

3. Battalions can be very powerful, even beyond their gambits; take a look through yours. Assign a few high-level ones to characters and level them up and you can see some absurd boosts (like +8 Mt, +20 hit, etc.)

4. ...Ore auxiliary battles, maybe? Other than that, not really.

Some will disagree with me I'm sure but the Tellius series has the best protagonist in the whole FE franchise (Ike) and the story is top 3 at minimum. Some will say Three houses has the best story but in certain aspects, Path of Radiance runs rings effortlessly around Three Houses and so does Radiant Dawn to an extent.

but that's my opinion.

so you chose edelgard over rhea? regrettable. seteth and flayn are great characters but you won't find that out till you play the other routes.

I've been thinking lately. maybe I should try beating the game keeping Byleth as a commoner and everyone else as their respective portrait attire. just to see how much of a increase in difficulty i may get. definitely a fun idea after my current church run.

It was a mistake to play Golden Deer right after the Church route.

I will take the fatally flawed multiple route storytelling of Three Doors Down over Radiant Dawn's disjointed disaster of a story. How people say that game has better writing while ignoring the nonexistent supports (writing-wise), Micaiah being the worst "Lord" aside from Corrin and the abysmal first two parts of a four-part story is beyond me.

Thanks. :3 Yeah, the auxiliary battles are just such a crapshoot for me. I seldom manage to break every monster’s shields for things like mythril and umbral steel in particular. RIP my beautiful Levin Swords.

Radiant Dawn definitely was flawed (supports or lack of definitely a valid complaint) but it was a hell of a finish to the tellius saga nonetheless.

Micaiah being worst lord? Debatable. she certainly has weak spots but worst? make your case if you have the time.

Three houses ain't flawed my main complaint about TH is the monastery post timeskip ALL ROUTES. feels jarring to remain at monastery when you could be in camps or at a fort such as the one @ the bridge of myrddin due to being in times of war.

honestly didnt feel like you were actually at war. no sense of urgency. where as Radiant Dawn like PoR continued having you travel and setup camp. my personal favorite was the three way split where you divide your team as you make way towards the goddess tower in begnion. the sense of urgency and dread, and the fear was very real in comparison to past and even present FE games and has since not been replicated.

you didnt like jarod or that prick duke of crimea? I thought it was refreshing that the ending to a previous FE game didnt end up a totally happy ending. Radiant Dawn showed that underlying shit will always be there. they dont go away. and even if you defeat a big bad and end a war, recovery aint always roses and somebody still gets screwed even if you had the best intentions.

but if you didnt appreciate that i guess we can only agree to disagree. Wont deny Radiant Dawn has flaws. definitely has flaws but it also has its strong points and some of those strong points have yet to be challenged to this day.

That's where battalions shine, especially ranged ones and explosives. Since gambits hit multiple squares, shield breaks are very easy to achieve.

The first time he ...
Legit threatens to assassinate you if you dare cross Edelgard is one hell of a "fuck yeah" moment.
Like, he's a character with actual agency. And that's good. Blind followers are tiresome.

Regarding Hubert:
I only got one dark seal out of death knight. I was hoping to get my second when I saw death knight show up in chapter 12, but ... yea... btw edelgard i am still waiting on that explanation, just saying. Am I stuck as a dark mage? No other chance of getting dark seals? Should I stay there for the rest of the game or go for more advanced classes with Hubert?

Just as I am getting started with crimson flower route it's hard to believe I didn't choose the lol super evil path, with one of the few Dark Mages in the game in my team, having literal death knight be my ally in battle. Having a little bit of a 'are we the baddies' moment. But overall Edelgard motivations make sense to me! A much better heel turn than her likely inspiration (Daenerys)
Not that I mind. Tie Fighter is my fave game ever :)

Iirc, Crimson Flower has no other chance to get a Dark Seal. So if you didn't get another one from the three times you face him prior to the time-skip, you're out of luck. The other routes even have another chance in a certain paralogue if you have both Mercedes and Caspar recruited.

It's stupid imo, and an oversight from the devs. For this route, they should've made Dark Seals buyable ... it's not like you're at the source by siding with the Empire.

Ultimately, you want Hubert to be a Dark Knight, he even has a Budding Talent for Lances ... though the skill isn't too hot for Dark Knight's ... or Hubert's Dex which is a bit on the low side. Since Hubert only learns Dark Magic to begin with, you're only losing out on the class mastering ability Lifetaker from the Dark Bishop. You could make him a Sage between Dark Knight, though you should change asap then, the class mastering ability for Sage is ... nearly useless (imo).

It should be noted that the Japanese name for the Death Knight is "Shinigami Kishi", which could be literally translated as "Death God Knight", which while sounding ominous indeed, doesn't necessarily sound "outright evil" in the same way. I mean, it sounds less like "death incarnate", and more like "one who serves death".

Small nuance, but still.

That's a very literal translation, though, which I'm personally not fond of.
Given the scythe and skull face, he's obviously supposed to be the Grim Reaper (aka Death), who is rarely portrayed as a good guy.

Why didn't they give you these named units in BE-E as deployable units though (Ladislava, Randolph,
Death Knight)
. You get the Knights of Seiros on BE-C after all.
They even hang out in the monastery.
I mean
Death Knight
doesn't really. But then, they could just make him like Dimitri post-timeskip, where he just growls in a corner, hissing at everyone that comes close. For all his refusals to drink tea or be a normal human, he did take battlefield directions well.

Still trying to look at fan art to find motivation to go back and finish BE-E.
God I hate BE-E chapter 17.

I'm at the final battle of the BE story and I'm still mad at myself that I choose Normal.
I actually should be mad at the developers because Normal difficulty is not what Normal should be.

I'm new to the series and I started out at Hard. I was completely overwhelmed by the first battles so I switch back to Normal.
I really like the variety of teaching, social interactions and battling. But at Normal, I never ever had to think about my actions in battle. I breezed through it, and most of my enemies fell with one hit.
They should've called it Story mode.

Now I'm at the final battle and there is a huge difficulty spike and I'm having troubles surviving. The game made is so easy for me that I never truly invested in tactics or choosing the right battalions and weapons and stuff. And at this point, I don't want to lear tactics when I'm at the very end.

I'll definitely wait until Lunatic mode comes out for a proper replay.

One possible almost literal translation is "Grim Reaper Knight". Note the "Knight" qualifier, not as a class but as a social status, referencing he's not death itself but his servant. And yes he's not supposed to be good guy. But the simple fact that he doesn't attack you the first two times you encounter him should give an indication that he's not supposed to be a random evil guy (like "Death Knight" could imply).

I just got to the Holy Tomb on the Black Eagles route and I was not expecting that twist. I don't want to choose! :(

What do most people go with, kill or protect? I haven't decided yet. Both options feel like failure.

Up to you.

I did the Church route first, but i'm doing my playthroughs from least favorite (Church) to most favorite (Edelgard), with Golden Deer following Church and then Blue Lions.

Just one thing, one route is shorter:

Edelgards. Has a fewer chapters than the other three routes.

Do you make multiple saves, or do you just run new game plus to see the alternate route(s)?

I'm not entirely sure I have the free time to devote multiple runs, so I kinda want to see what's "best" but man, they really put you in an ethical bind. You invest so much time and effort into these characters and then everything gets turned upside down.

NG+ runs, but i plan on doing other games in between after Golden Deer latest.

About "best" ... neither route offers some sort of "best" ending, no Revelations here. All end with a different outcome. So what's "best" really is ... again ... up to you. ^^

4. Is there any way to build an even remotely steady stream of rare ores? lol
I use battalion gambits exclusively pretty much to hit monster-type enemies with multiple squares. Once the shield is weaken, take out all the shattered shield tiles with your unit to reliably get ore drops. Strange that the game never seems to have fully explained this 🤷‍♀️

Also, I beat BE-C and some thoughts here.
I fully was expecting the game to end after defeating Edelgard so the two additional fights afterward felt a bit of a drag. Maybe I skipped out somehow but I have no idea who those Agarthians or whatever their names are still. The last Rhea fight definitely felt like a drag but it got super hype because I managed to barely break all her shield tiles with careful unit placement. I was so hyped after I managed to do that!

Question to anyone who has done the Mercedes and Caspar paralogue:

when do you get the Scythe of Sariel? I killed him with Caspar but didn't receive anything except the Dark Seal. Do you only get it when the mission ends?

edit: never mind, got my answer

Most paralogue rewards are granted after watching the final cutscene. So it’s probably the case here too.

Wait is Petra intended to be this game's version of someone from Africa? Her post-time skip clothes seem similar to some of the more tribal outfits.

I hope not, it opens a whole can of worms.

Hmm alright. When I read about it, it sounded as though it would be given right on the spot as opposed to a completion reward but hopefully you're right!

edit: yep I got it in the cutscene after all. Dude made me sweat a bit!

I don't know about that interpretation but Brigid is supposed to be a hunting society so it's like a traditional Brigid huntress outfit. She wears that gear as a Thief and Assassin in the battlefield.

Thanks for the battalion info! As it happens, I have stuff to say about your BE-C thoughts too; it was my first route (I’m on BL now).

I’m of two minds regarding the game continuing on past Edelgard.

For starters, I would have felt like part 2 was too short if things had ended with Chapter 19. Silver Snow starts with Chapter 13, meaning part 2 would have been just barely over half the length of part 1. For a game with a big draw of “Now, five years later, things get real,” I wouldn’t have been thrilled with ending up classifying part 2 as a final third instead. (Not coincidentally, as much as I loved the emotional experience of going up against the woman I’d planned on having Byleth romance [she showed up at the Goddess Tower during the ball, even!], I’m looking forward to Crimson Flower the least because it really is that short. It’s 18 chapters.)

Furthermore, I was glad that plot threads regarding Those That Slither in the Dark and Rhea’s mysteries were, uh... well, there was an attempt to explain them. <_< Had the game ended in Enbarr, I would have been bummed that neither of those elements were explored.

So in a sense I’m delighted that we got Chapters 20 and 21. I certainly don’t feel like the game overstayed its welcome like I’ve seen opined twice before you even said so! I would have gladly gone another several chapters.

And that’s where my issue lies: like you, I was left confounded by endgame developments. I had hardly an inkling what it was that I was thwarting when I went up against the Agarthans; Thales just kind of died and I was like... “Oh.” Compounding matters, the script seems to assume players understand from past Fire Emblems that inevitably someone is a dragon and they go crazy; I did not know this until I was told by members here on Era, so I was left flabbergasted in the moment.

Overall I love Silver Snow. I just wish I knew what the hell was going on during the climax...
