I've heard 8k would be helpful for VR, but then you also need very high framerates, so it's gonna be a while on that front too.
My s3inch 1080p 144 Hz monitor is really smooth, and looks great. Can hit all games max settings with this res.
I'm probably going to have to get a 4k monitor for work purposes, but I'd much prefer a 1440 144 Hz.
Until 4k lets me have: 144 Hz, max settings, FPs in the 100 range at least... I'm not interested.
Yeah I'd prefer if they worked on Hz too. Took me forever to realize why I preferred my monitor to our 4k tv.
But I'm also not a sucker for visuals like that
People won't but companies willNo reason at all to go beyond 4K, virtually ever, outside of VR. 99% of people would never benefit from it. Higher framerates, better animations, better AI, more things on screen, better effects, etc.. etc.. all make infinitely more sense than going beyond 4K any time soon.
I always found the PS3/360 era blurry on my screens. 720p was never enough (for me). Also, leaps in increased image quality via resolution are getting exponential smaller while performance demands rise almost linear. It's a loosing game and I don't think we get the same resolution increase we got over the last two decades.
yes... once i figure it out that is.. 🤔Vex can you please add an "I'll prefer to stick with 1080p" in the poll? Thank you.
This. 4K is nice if you have a projector screen but 1080p is plenty enough on a regular sized TV unless you sit really close. I think the power should be used for better image quality and framerates instead. My PC is still 1080p and it's not like games on the X looks better just because they're 4K.4K already feels unnecessary. Do y'all glue yourselves to TVs and monitors or what?
And I believe 8K is standard movie theatre resolution, right? So yeah, alot of people want that at home. I know I do.
Lol @ the constant race. The constant race towards higher and higher resolutions for TVs kind of rub me the wrong way.
First, oh yeah it sure can be nice, but is it really necessary for those res to be pushed to the mainstream? Except for very specific use cases – like maybe huge screens and VR – to me that's a solid "no". The ROI becomes very low...
Second (and for me the most important point), each time there's a bump in TV resolution it impacts the display integrity of all of the lower resolution mediums you play on it. That huge DVD and blu-ray collection you have? Those older game consoles? They will inevitably look worst than they did before. No amount of technology TV manufacturers put in there to smooth things out will change the fact that you cannot retain 100% display integrity of lower res media being played on a fixed resolution screen. The max that can be done is throw tech at the problem to have the picture look close to its original resolution. But the end result will always be a picture that is different than what it's supposed to be.
Lol @ the constant race.
We've gone from 720p to 1080p to 4K in like 14 years? That's almost one upgrade every 5 years... right... "constant" upgrading.
Just because you're cool with decade old tech and resolution doesn't mean we should be too. To your second point, buy a good TV for once and you'll have some decent upscaling.
