For those that are curious, the "hologram" aspect of Miku is from the Gatebox, a personal assistant device kind of like Amazon Echo that texts you when you're out of the house.

The Joi comparisons from Blade Runner 2049 are pretty accurate.

Fuck this makes me genuinely sad....

where can I buy one?

judgement? no, in fact I find it way worse to be all "good for him hope he's happy" when talking about a dude that clearly has some issues and it's doing something that will not help him get better (in fact, this feels like he's diggin his hole deeper).

Dunno about that movie, but whatever, this is not an AI capable of simulating a human like any Hollywood movie. Do you think his loneliness is gonna improve talking to a doll and a basic hologram? dude should be encouraged to seek help like many other people with depression had, not encouraged to marry vg waifus.
This! It's not about judgement, I don't think this is 'wrong': I think it's sad, which is a whole different matter. Do anyone honestly think that he'd take marrying an hologram over hugging a real woman? Whispering in her hear, having her whisper in yours, feeling her warmth. I think personal choices are SACRED, but I just think this isn't a choice at all: it's a cage he's build for himself, and I'm convinced that he doesn't want anything more in the world than break it and be finally free to love. That's why I don't think that indulging in his phantasy is good for him. The man should seek help, 'cause anyone can get better if properly treated. I know it.

You guys tend to forget that the holy men of our culture were married to God before Luther came in. The pope and the entirety of catholic priests are (supposedly) devoted to God. From an atheist point of view, it's not much better, and it isn't frowned upon.

I don't think he's happy at all. I think that he'd take a real woman over a piece of toy any day, if he knew how to escape the mental cage he's buried himself into

Why do you think this though?

Is it because that's how you feel and think so he has to feel the same way?

From what I see he looks content and happy but I'm sure people talking down on him and feeling sad for him like hes a loser because of how he live his life is sure doing a lot for his self esteem

Might not be an option for him. Let him take what he can get.
He should be encouraged to seek the option to get help. Professionals DO manage to help in situations like this. I'm not saying he shouldn't take whatever happiness he's able to. I'm saying he shouldn't give up on seeking REAL happiness. It'd take years, but 35 is WAY too soon to give up.

lol you know i've never thought about this

But yeah priests and nuns are married to God. I guess this is a more literal version of what humans have apparently been doing for hundreds of years.

This might seem funny now but with advancements in VR tech and VR porn I can see this becoming more of a reality.

Stories like this are just depressing and scary to me.

Depressing because he didn't have any luck with women

Scary because his 'wife' never consented to marriage, and he probably sees relationships as something that doesnt involve change, compromise or self improvement.

The amount of irreverent, trashbag human beings that won't learn introspection or learn to appropriately change themselves to get in relationships is only going to increase as this becomes more commonplace.

People don't even like speaking to other people anymore. I'd like to mock this guy, but he only shines a light on Japan's inevitable, conquered by China future, and is only a microcosm of the problems in that country no one is aiming to fix in the speed neccesary to correct.

I dunno how anyone could be supporting this outside of devil's advocates. The man needs therapy from a professional, and him being a school administrator is a bit harrowing.

People don't wanna be alone but they also don't wanna put in the work. Is what it is. Society is trending further toward this.

Nope, not legally recognised. Mentioned in the article.

Also goes to some depressing places:

Did the bullying include statements like, "You can't date her because she's not real"?

That would only be in the US. The age of consent in Japan is actually 13.

Yeah, the land you're standing on changes whether or not being attracted to people who are not fully emotionally matured is disgusting and exploitative or not, that's so true.

So much judgement in this thread.

I can only tell you all to watch "her" by Spike Jonze. Just because you don't have to deal with loneliness, that doesn't mean there isn't a growing percentage of the population (and not only in Japan) who has to live with solitude. The marriage concept is something that becomes more and more outdated as the probability that you will have to live through a divorce keeps growing. "till death do you part" is drivel at this point.
If an AI could emulate someone that is both smart and witty while being unconditionnally in love with a poor lonely soul, plenty of people would consider that as fullfilling the void in their life. This guy is just one of the first examples of someone being officially wed to a hologram, but the idea itself is far from being new. Pygmalion has been a thing since ancient times.

That movie is literally about a guy avoiding his own responsibility in his marriage falling apart by burying himself in a fake thing that ends up only making him feel emptier and less complete until he finally realizes he needs to fix himself before he can love and be loved by someone else. It's not an argument for loving an AI. It's almost exactly the opposite.

Yes of course trashbag humans are not in relationships, that's why I admire our president. He has been in multiple relationships so you know he is a good person. Come on Some people don't want to be in relationships and some lack the skills but being in a relationship is not an indicator of someone's moral quality

We certainly didn't see the same things. His former wife becomes jealous of the AI halfway in the film. The main theme is how some men want companionship in their life, something that doesn't even necessarily involve physical sex. The main character is looking for his second half after the disaster that his divorce represented. The machine helps him to get back on tracks and find happiness. Like I said it comes from the pygmalion myth that isn't exactly new, and it's also present in the Bible with Eve being made from Adam's side.

It's a great movie because it can be read in different ways, is the machine trying to betray humans by being exactly what he want her to be (something that isn't true several times in the movie and in the finale) or it can be read as a long epistolary relationship, something that doesn't involve physical contact and yet fullfill each other's need. He doesn't want to go back with his ex-wife at the end of the movie, and it's unclear what's next for him. But I certainly wouldn't say that he looks emptier as the movie goes on, it's almost the exact opposite. He goes back on track thanks to this artificial companionship.

But seriously, with the advancement of AI, this will only get worse and more common.

Actually, aren't half the appeal of "2D" characters that they're fairly predictable archtypes?

Advancement of AI, making the 2D women become more like "real" women, would possibly push these types of people back.

Just imagine an artificial AI in place of this guy's mom, chastising the very same Miku except she's 116 years old now, that's possibly what 100 years from now will look like.
