Sumala Woodshaper makes me wonder if there's a Theros set coming up.
Still wondering myself, same for lich.
I guess with the guild leaders being rare, the next-flashiest big creatures got moved up to mythic a la Dragon's Maze.
Dream Eater is a pretty insane card in limited.
Those Ixalan cards are all flashy though...Bounty Agent seems like it might become popular in Commander. Play it in the early turns and suddenly everybody at the table is afraid to cast their commander.
They did this crap in Rivals of Ixalan, too. They put the Elder Dinosaur cycle at Rare and then put in a bunch of derpy stuff like Polyraptor, Trapjaw Tyrant, and Twilight Prophet at Mythic.

Hot take: This is exactly what Mythic rarity should be. Big, splashy limited bombs. They did this crap in Rivals of Ixalan, too. They put the Elder Dinosaur cycle at Rare and then put in a bunch of derpy stuff like Polyraptor, Trapjaw Tyrant, and Twilight Prophet at Mythic.

I mean, the Elder dinosaurs are even bigger, bombier, and splashier. You think Trapjaw Tyrant is as big, bomby, and splashy as Zetalpa?

Why? Mythic rarity literally does not change much of anything. At the end of the day, having these cards at rare would still make them roughly as difficult to obtain as they are now. Mythic just makes it feel more special to some.Mythic shouldn't exist. Putting crap in the mythic slot is exactly what should be happening.
I wouldn't say that Mythics shouldn't be constructed playable. I think the mythic slot should be "special". It should be exciting in some way. Like I'm totally fine with Planeswalkers being Mythic and continuing to be Mythic. It can be an event whenever a mythic hits the table. Or you can put your major story characters there. Mythics should appeal to Timmies and Vorthoses. I don't think a rando vampire that draws cards or a rando nightmare sphinx really do that.

There's only one mythic banned in standard and it would be just as banned if it were a rare. Rarity is 100% irrelevant from a gameplay perspective in constructed (barring formats like pauper with rarity baked into the rules).Mythic rarity gives WotC an easy way to push 1 or 2 random cards from a set in order to drive higher sales. This has the knock on effect of de-balancing standard in disastrous ways, and is in part what lead to many of the standard bannings recently. It's quite the opposite of 'literally not changing anything'.

Rarity is a huge part of limited and clearly a factor in the secondary market, but I'd argue that, for the latter, a big part of it is psychological.

I'd argue that cards like Tetzimoc, Profane Procession, Glorybringer and to a lesser extent, Hostage Taker show that they're perfectly willing to put limited super-bombs at rare.Mythic is the only reason those cards can be printed. At rare they make draft terrible. Take away mythic and you take away their ability to put out those cards on a whim.
Man, I think I currently have a most hated card from my Commander play sessions with my small group: Nevermore. It's not the biggest thorn in my side (the one card one guy plays that exiles all artifacts just shreds my deck because it's the cat commander deck modified to be equipment focused, and I really can't do crap about that one, for example), but it's like... the spirit of the card in the format. Just feels mean-spirited and crummy. Like "yeah no, you aren't allowed to touch the card your deck is centered around until this thing is removed." Just a real feel-bad card, IMO.
This makes zero sense. Rarity doesn't work that way... AT ALL.Mythic is the only reason those cards can be printed. At rare they make draft terrible. Take away mythic and you take away their ability to put out those cards on a whim.

I'd rather it be Mythic for Arena tbh because I have a billion mythic Wildcards and zero rare Wildcards (mainly due to the fact that lands eat up rare wildcards like candy)It is at times like this when I see a card like Assassin's Trophy, that I am glad Arena exists. 4x Rare WC to get that card is much easier on the economy of that game than it would be if I played in paper. Of course, I would never be playing in paper regardless so its probably a moot point. Nice that I can try it out for relatively cheap though.
