Splatoon and mk are doing very well compared to last year, and SSBU is only down by a little, I think even smash will outsell Pokémon in japan lifetime compared to WW at this point. Shipments have pokemon ahead for now but it'll turn back around next year imo

After the tumble from Xenogears' ~900k and Xenosaga I's ~450k in the early PSX/PS2 days, it's good to see the Xeno name on the rise in Japan again.

SWITCH PUBLISHER SALES: FAMITSU TOP 30 - WEEK 21, 2020
05xKgIK.png

*Digital sales not included

Sorry I was a little late on this, to be clear this is for last week! I will do another post once we get the Top 30 for this week.

Those third party goose eggs are self-inflicted. The environment is fit for a company that would want to publish exclusively domestic.

Anyone thinking 8mil for AC by years end? Or sticking with a safe 7mil? Maybe some optimistic 7.5mil or pessimistic 6.5mil predictions here in japan lol.

I do believe quarter 3 will slow down and ship maybe 500k physical/digital

Do they? This late life cycle surge seems like a dream scenario. They sold a ton of units at full price and cleared out inventory before a new system launch. With the stay at home orders dying down, they can resume light production and likely sell through wha they manufacture.
The ps5 is probably going to be heavily supply constrained. It would be ideal if the ps4 sells well in addition to the ps5 over the next 12 months. Both are very profitable machines and at this stage someone who buys a ps4 probably won't buy a ps5 for a few years.

Are you talking about shipments (i.e. digital included)? And calendar year?

8M seems pretty damn realistic in that case, considering I think it'll be closer to 7M than 6M by the end of June.

Are you referring to CY Q3 or FY?

In case you're talking the former yes, I think so. Also, I don't get why the game shouldn't have sold 6 millions already, it would've needed just a 22% digital ratio.
What happened to your crazy predictions?!

The ratio was about 20% at launch and it tends to decrease overtime based on previous Nintendo first party games

Yes sorry calendar year and shipments, sell thru retail maybe 6.2-6.5mil by years end for that 8mil+ if it happens

We (well mostly I) overestimated digital, going by sales you think they were extremely high lol. I'll still go optimistic. Just asking everyone opinions.

The hardware situation is what's going to make or break AC this year imo. As shown by the hold this week. Nsmb only had the crazy legs because DS was consistently selling at its prime while AC has hardware shortages that's affecting it

Those shortages will only start to disappear as the year goes on.

I think 8M in shipments by the end of 2020 is a lock. Gotta aim higher than that!

When you realize that 8 million is the floor for what AC:NH can achieve, you have to wonder:

How can anyone say Japanese market is dead for traditional games? AC is a traditional game with traditional controls... clearly there is market, a very big market, 8 million copies or maybe even more LTD is extremely impressive in a single country, a lot of games can only dream to achieve that and on a worldwide level.

For publishers it is easy to blame the market but are they even trying?

AC:NH is probably going to be the best selling game ever in Japan, it probably passed 6m copies with digital already in a few weeks and still there is a long road ahead of it.

AC sold in Q1 2.6mil and it's currently around 2.07mil this quarter. If it finishes let's say at 2.30mil (that's weekly avg of 60k) and 100k on store shelves, lastly Digital being pessimistic of 10% from sell thru numbers it'll easily be 6mil by end of June. Chris saying closer to 6.3mil is a safe bet

Those shortages will only start to disappear as the year goes on.

your right, I already wanted to predict a whopping 10mil before and got carried away and said 12mil which will come back and bite me lol.

My optimistic side wants to say 9mil for end of year, but really depends on Q3 and what it does this quarter

Yeah this. There was a clear distinction the 10-15 years before the Switch came out and New Leaf, NSMB, Pokemon D/P, DQIX etc were dominant and achieving sales that were just not feasible on more expensive home consoles for full price but BotW, Smash Ultimate, Sword/Shield blurred that somewhat but ACNH has smashed that entirely. Sure it's very important that AC was already a huge brand and the system it released on was selling well but that is only a part that helps the game itself sell this well, the game itself is as you say and there is nothing inherently impossible about it that it couldn't come from SE, Capcom or even Sony.

3DS vs NSW

-2020 Q0 Gap 3311k
-2020 Q1 Gap 2302k

W??: 3DS // NSW / Gap

W14: 31.7k / 154.6k [2179k]
W15: 24.0k / 25.3k [2178k]
W16: 22.4k / 27.8k [2173k]
W17: 34.0k / 107.1k [2100k]
W18: 39.6k / 78.7k [2071k]
W19: 40.1k / 78.7k [2033k]
W20: 25.4k / 38.4k [2020k]
W21: 25.0k / 52.5k [1992k]
W22: 24.5k / 107.6k [1909k]
W23: 36.7k
W24: 29.5k
W25: 25.9k
W26: 26.6k
Q2 : 373.5k vs 670.7k

Doing great so far, it'll be over double of what 3ds did in the same quarter.

I think NSW 2020 has a shot to being the best April-June in terms of sell thru for both NSW/3ds.

Check this out, didn't realize even if Q2 is by far the slowest quarter, NSW 2020 would of done soooo much better than even Q3 usual does. Anyways between the 3ds and itself for all Q2 these are the best ones...

Top 5 Q2 ever (3ds/NSW)

861k (3DS 2012)
671k (NSW 2020) <<<<< 4weeks left
626k (3DS 2013)
531k (NSW 2019)
484k (NSW 2018)

NSW 2020 already best Q2 for NSW and only beaten by 3ds 2012. It's down by 190k..... I think it has a shot. Maybe Nintendo will have big weeks for week 24 and 26

million possible? That needs 329k

edit: for 1mil it needs to avg 83k per week. I think it's possible. Maybe something like

W23 45k
W24 100k
W25 55k
W26 130k

pls Nintendo lol

So, here is the greatest question of all time that we may never know..

Animal Crossing could have saved wii u with breath of the wild?! Like... would wii u become a 30/40 million units machine with those games?

I would have been a wasted effort. Maybe Wii U would have sold 26 -30 million instead of 14 million. nearly doubling sales on the backs of those 2 games would be impressive, but Nintendo would still be stuck with a low selling console and nothing to sell their successor with.

No, it was already too late. BotW would of easily done 5mil+ if exclusive though. AC I'm not so sure of but it wouldn't have done well at all

No, part of the reason these games are doing so well is the hardware itself. Desirable hardware makes games perform better, the Wii U was not desirable hardware.

no. it'd be a best seller on the Wii U, but by the time the game would come out, the system is too long in the tooth

The demand is clearly there it just depends how much Nintendo can ship. The lotteries still have FAR more people trying to buy switches than there are switches available.
