The Wonderful 101 is going again for that <10k opening.
I'm gonna say it; the kickstarter's success was always the definition of the vocal minority (Shenmue 3 also). Platinum should be thanking their lucky stars that Nintendo allowed them to have it fully. But it also felt like it was not the best... "effort" on Platinum's part where the Switch version had issues. I still believe they should've taken Nintendo's obvious exclusive-only offer and did it with them like anyone else would've since, you know, Nintendo co-owned the IP. I'd even wager it might've done better as Nintendo would've given it actual marketing. But that's just me. Sure would've meant a more polished remaster. Bayonetta 1 and 2 on Switch were seemingly done right.

Nintendo really didn't make that offer though. Nintendo never showed desire to do a port despite all the interest Kamiya tried to drum up. If Nintendo did want to do a port, they would never have gave away the IP.

It really does feel like Kamiya was trying to prove it was the wii u/bad Nintendo marketing and not his game itself as the reason for the bomb, but the current trend is pointing to him being wrong.

Kamiya was right in that The Wonderful 101 flopped on the Wii U due to bad marketing, but Platinum certainly isn't doing the game any favors when they themselves haven't done the marketing any better. Just look at Xenoblade and Clubhouse Games for a comparison.

"This week, Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to hold 1st place.

New release, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, ranked in 2nd place. Initial movement is much higher than expected and due to its low price that makes it easy to buy we anticipate that sales will continue to grow as one of the classic Switch titles.

In addition, Switch software occupies 1st to 9th place in the ranking with Final Fantasy VII Remake being 10th."

Unless The Last of Us remastered saw a massive boost, this will be a Switch top 10 software week.

Nintendo wouldn't give this game actual marketing even if it was Switch exclusive, not that this would somehow increase its sales from the moment there isn't interest from the market.

I always took this game like a beta test for self-editing :
- foreseable quantity (thanks to Kickstarter)
- easy to recoup game

It screams to me as a perfect case of making a low balled test to experiment all phases of auto-editing (minus advertising)

Nintendo heavily promoted the game and put it front and center in various directs

The game bombed due to market apathy and the rerelease is only cementing it further

I wonder how much Platinumgames had to pay to buy the IP from Nintendo. I'm sure the actual porting was relatevely unexpensive (also considering how basic the ports are).

Nintendo could just let the IP go without exchange from the moment they have good relationship with Platinum and no intention to invest more on it.

I mean I have little doubt that if it was highlighted like Nintendo does with their first party titles it would have sold significantly better on Switch, showing up in the news section, in one or multiple Directs, having multiple videos on Nintendo's YT channel, that's plenty of additional exposure, let alone down the line being highlited when for sale with other First Party titles, Astral Chain definitely benefitted from all of these elements. I'm sure it would have still bombed in Japan, but overseas it could've sold significantly more.

I second this.

Only difference with EU/JP was the time limit for purchasing vouchers, but line-up was exactly the same from what I remember.
While this is true prices vary quite a bit in Japan between games while the US prices are usually all the same (60$). In the end you saved about 20$ in all while in Japan it can be as much as a free game (or close enough)

Speaking of which, has there ever been any semi-successful super sentai-esque game? I thought maybe Viewtiful Joe since it had so many spinoffs and whatnot, but GameDataLibrary shows that it never reached 100k. I don't see any of the actual licensed games based on sentai franchises doing much either, though of course the tokusatsu mega-franchise Kamen Rider has had a handful of titles selling over 100k with its license.

All the gameplay impressions from the Switch version of The Wonderful 101 that I've read and heard are that it plays very unintuitively, and is a clearly worse version as a result (the gamepad apparently being instrumental in the gameplay loop of the game). If this were a Switch game, it is quite possible that its reviews and word of mouth would be quite a bit worse (Switch version reviewed 7 metacritic points below the WiiU versions, which itself wasn't that high). Astral Chain, on the other hand, reviewed at an 87 and has some great word of mouth from what I can tell.

It's possible that TW101 would have done better on the Switch, but it's also possible that it would have been rejected as a game whose controls just don't work well. At any rate, AC selling better than TW101 isn't just due to launching on the Switch.

The 'they didn't market it enough' angle is also dubious: typically, you market to the extent that you feel you get a return on investment: like, you wouldn't throw out a multi-million dollar campaign for a very niche game. AC got some decent marketing because Nintendo considered it more appealing (and I presume they had some good reasons to think so); it's not that they were out to sabotage TW101, they probably just saw some very low engagement with the game since its reveal and scaled the marketing effort to their subsequent expectations.

W101 has some pretty poor performance on Switch. game is hella CPU limited. weird how they made a game with little regard for how CPU bound they were (on Wii U)

PC Gaming Show will feature Atlus (and a lot more), ports announcements to come? (up: Atlus now has a creator page on Steam)

https://www.gematsu.com/2020/06/pc-gaming-show-2020-to-feature-over-50-games-from-atlus-sega-xseed-games-humble-games-tripwire-interactive-and-more I'm singling Atlus because they have never released a game on PC aside from the Sega Europe port of Catherine Classic. The most obvious outcome...
Persona 5 Royal for Xbox Series X and PC

Harada and Co. are well aware of what it takes to make a best-seller, but they're simply not the type of games they want to work on.
Switch version of Jikkyou this year isn't an alternative one that appeals to a different audience but Konami can see the way for maintaining high sales isn't going from PS4/Vita to only PS4.

Switch version of Jikkyou is 1000 yen cheaper, and of course the cihibi/super-deformed designs are pretty much tailor made for a Nintendo console. So yeah, for that particular series it's an easy decision for Konami to make. But for Pro Yakyuu Spirits? That'll likely be a tougher decision.

Very, very tough indeed.

Unfortunately, this is the first and (still) only Pro Baseball Spirits game on a Nintendo platform, and right after 3DS's launch, but it still shows that's it's not impossible, especially now that the difference between Sony and Nintendo in terms of raw power / controls / interfaces is the lowest it's ever been. Not even talking about the demographics here.

Also, as already stated in the past, while "chibi designs are tailor made for a Nintendo console", mainline Jikkyou Powapuro have been missing on a Nintendo system since 2009.

Yeah, and only a 360 version of Pro Baseball Spirits had lower initial week sales than the 3DS version.

Good point on Jikkyou though. No idea why Konami didn't put out mainline on the 3DS. That was a very dumb decision.

Why would initial week sales matter more than LTD sales ?

The 3DS entry sold better than the 2014 and 2018 PSV entries and it was not a mainline game.

The 3DS entry was a mainline game, titled Pro Baseball Spirits 2011 (as seen in the picture a few posts above).

PSP version sold 220k, PS3 version sold 175k, and the 3DS version sold 55k.

And initial weeks sales would matter depending on sell-through, so without that info, you're right, it's better to use total sales.

You are right.

However, they switched the following year and replaced the 3DS SKU by a Vita SKU. Pro Spirits 2012, 2013 and 2014 on Vita did less than Pro Spirits 2011 on 3DS.

Sabi says it's Persona 4 Golden. Not the best of sources, but it would make sense assuming it's another SEGA Europe port that ATLUS JPN didn't touch in any way.

It would also exclude a Japanese release.
is Catherine listed under Atlus as well?

also, wasn't there already an Atlus channel on Steam when they still did indie publishing?

In terms of Evergreens, NSW has probably some of the best seen on a single console. Tier List Time!!! Agree to Disagree lol

4Evergreen: MK8D / Minecraft / ACNH

Evergreen: SMP / Splat2 / SSBU / RFA

Green: BoTW / Brain Training

mind you, these are games that will sell well after launch intill the end of NSW life cycle. A SMP2 would cut into SMP legs but I think the others are safe, RFA could be a 4Evergreen but I can't guage it since we don't know how it'll sell once demand is settled lol.

Wherewill clubhouse 51 land
Remember that games like Mario Kart Wii are still selling if we go by iirc Nintendo putting out updated numbers fornthrir older titles like some Wii games and the last updated numbers for FE fates. So i wouldnt be surprised if we still see these games charting several gens later
