Do we think this Sushi game will generate overall higher profit if it's sold at $15, or Nintendo did the right thing by selling it at as high price as possible to the only people who are willing to buy it?

Have they been promoting the Octo Expansion much?

A shadow drop's always nice, but this could be huge for the Japanese market, and I'm surprised that they didn't give them more of a heads-up.
LOL, as if Nintendo needs to promote Splatoon in Japan. It's practically guaranteed to be number 1 (or 2 at lowest) next week

My big takeaway is from the Little Nightmares numbers. Seems even in Japan, indie games sell more on Switch than PS4.

is it possible for minecraft to become a big retail hit (like it was for vita), or is it releasing too long after the DL version so everyone interested has already bought it from eshop?

Going from the preorders, it might have the biggest opening for the franchise and regarding legs... well it really shouldn't be a problem.

Would be with the right FGO bonus

but yeah a sequel to a fate musou isn't gonna be doing much for hardware

This makes me wonder why Sony/Aniplex don't shill their games with FGO bonuses like GBF does. Look at Uma Musume, went from an anime that was probably gonna sell maybe 3k per disc at best, to likely selling over 10k thanks to offering goods in Granblue.

The Wii U version also got a digital-only release at first, but also managed to sell over 550k physical units. It'll be a big retail release for the Switch.
is there anywhere I can seen the upcoming Switch's releases?

Its Minecraft, it will join Splatoon 2 and MK8D as one of the constantly highest selling Switch games in Japan for the next few years. The launch might be around 50K but Minecraft's real potential will be realized during Obon and December. I think there will be weeks where Minecraft is close to 100K(late December especially). People underestimate it's attach rate because we lack data but no doubt that it's the 3rd party game with highest attach rate on the Switch. It's like doubting that Fortnite is going to have effect in the West in terms of hardware sales. If Fortnite catches on in Japan, I think it will move hardware there as well. Its a huge game it doesn't matter if it's launching later, if it remains popular it's likely going to be moving PS5/X2/Switch2 when those launch

Damn, Sushi Striker bombed as hard as I expected. I guess that this is the Codename: Steam of the new generation.

The Switch increseased sales for the fourth straight week. Dont think there's been any bigger launch since.

It's going to be real interesting to see what Mario Tennis and Minecraft can do, Minecraft is really killing it on comg right now.

I keep seeing a lot of Detroit fanart from Japanese accounts on Twitter. Maybe that will be like word of mouth?

Sinobi was also expecting Octo expansion for 13 July, not that he complains. Fire Emblem and Yoshi delays must have shaked release schedule a bit.

Not sure if this is a reaction to Yoshi and Fire Emblem getting delayed or just a reaction to that it made no sense to release Captain Toad, Octopath Traveler, and Octoexpansion on the same day.

I feel like a reaction to Yoshi getting delayed would have been to release a NSMBU+3D World collection in September... But they obviously didn't do that.

I wonder how Fire emblem Three Houses will do. I know its a long way away but initial reactions seem to be that looks like it's going back to a Pre-Awakening style game.
Sales wise, Awakening did revitalise the series. Would going back to Pre-Awakening style games have a negative impact on it or will it be fine now with its expanded audience from the mobile game and awakening and fates.

I don't really see anything in that trailer that suggests they're going with a pre-Awakening style approach.

Three Houses looks exactly the way i wanted it to, i was afraid it was just going to look like the 3DS games in 720p, they gave everything the HD treatment, the zoom in during combat looked very good and the area the character was exploring looked even better.

Retail puzzle games are dead right now---regardless the gameplay style. They can be found for free on mobile and digital platforms and therefore consumers' willingness-to-pay for such genre is close to zero. Only exceptions are Puyo (which, still, is declining in Japan as well, and it sold well on Switch thanks to being a launch game and a cross-over with Tetris) and mobile IPs turne-into-console games, like Puzzle and Dragons and Monster Strike (which is hardly a puzzle game, though). Tetrix Axis on 3DS bombed too. Nintendo has shifted all of its puzzle games on eShop: Picross, Pullblox, Boxboy (which is a platform too). Picross 3D 2 sold below 100k in Japan.

I'm talking about sub-genres and you ended up supporting my argument that a turn-based match-three puzzle game like Puzzle and Dragons managed to sell 1 million units on 3DS despite being free to play on mobile as you claim where people would be unwilling to spend money on a retail puzzle game regardless of its gameplay style.

Again, what does that tell you about action-based puzzle games? We can even add mobile to this regarding this part about puzzle games you claimed:

They can be found for free on mobile and digital platforms and therefore consumers' willingness-to-pay for such genre is close to zero.

Look at Puzzle Fighter on mobile, that died in less than 6 months despite being free to play and there is no other free to play action-based puzzle game (not called Tetris or Puyo Puyo) on mobile that comes to mind being widely successful which was why I never specified platforms when giving you this:

You shouldn't have too much trouble naming for me some recent new IPs of action-based puzzle games not named Tetris or Puyo Puyo that are widely popular and successful to show that the action-based puzzle genre isn't dead

Action-based puzzle games are a dead genre.

Anyone figure out why they translated 風花雪月 to 'Three Houses'? Is that a playing card term or something?

No, Houses are a commonly popular English term to mean a family of lords. eg, House Stark from Game of Thrones.

Making the subtitle "The Three Houses" would probably cause it to make more sense. Or "The Three Royal Houses"

XC2's Expansion getting a stand-alone release is probably smart. Not sure how well it'll do, but it XC2 did pretty well for itself. Being cheaper and probably more polished should help

So it has nothing to do with the Japanese title? The Japanese title is a Chinese proverb/expression referring to natural beauty (ex: Wind, flowers, snow, and moon), but is also a hand in mahjong.

No, it has nothing to do with beauty or anything. It has to do with houses of lords fighting each other in a three way battle.

In Chinese, it can also refer to "love" or "extravagant". The latter is very negative, usually referring to a lifestyle where degenerates are indulged in sex and alcohol.

I am very interested to know what the staff are actually referring to. Great title overall.

That's neat, I didn't know there was that nuance as well. I too look forward to finding out more about the game.

Will the Xenoblade 2 expansion chart in Sept?

Thanks, I guess they didn't even bother translating it. Probably would have been a really hard thing to find a suitable translation for however, so I suppose I understand.
Fire Emblem titles/subtitles are very rarely translated at all so it's not even unusual? Have you paid attention to how they localize the games at all? Haha.

Another good week for switch HW with no new releases. Hopefully it'll get a small bump from the splatoon expansion and then a solid bump from minecraft and Mario tennis. We should see continued higher sales for a while with more SW hitting in July.

Is there any word on when YW is likely to hit? That would be a good title to help fill the August/September lull and really keep HW moving.

There are posts about RE2 being available for preorder (NA and EU?), but I'm not finding it on yodobashi or Amazon here.

Crazy.

XenoVerse 2 might well reach 200k at this point. Curious to see how FighterZ will do.

Fifa will keep selling all Summer long thanks to the World Cup.

Look at Puzzle Fighter on mobile, that died in less than 6 months despite being free to play and there is no other free to play action-based puzzle game (not called Tetris or Puyo Puyo) on mobile that comes to mind being widely successful which was why I never specified platforms when giving you this:

Action-based puzzle games are a dead genre.

P&D sold 1.5m on 3DS because it was widely popular on mobile. Once the popularity started to decrease, the sale of 3DS entries also declined.

My point was, Sushi Striker didn't sell well because it's a full-priced retail puzzle-game in an era of free mobile games AND it doesn't have any IP to carry over like P&D had. I don't think it bombed BECAUSE OF its action-based gameplay. A turn-based Sushi Striker would have sold, in my opinion, equally bad.

It won't sell that. It might be part of the expansion pass but it is a standalone release way cheaper than the original.

There is an audience on the fence regarding Xenoblade Chronicles that might need this cheaper entry to finally try it.
that's just the minimun it needs to chart, from the question.

what's the breakdown of the xeno2 DLC btw?

Is the season pass for everything cost 30 if you have the game.
then this is standalone with only the Golden story DLC for 40?
