Minecraft crossing 1.500.000 next week hopefully. I think Microsoft has a path forward in Japan and it includes Nintendo. And in return for Xbox games having more sales in Japan, third party games with cross play have a potentially more active global online community to play with.

Yes in one way it is a popular game and an anticipated remake

Hence it showed a growth compared to last 4 games declining with each entry

My point was that this game isn't a good indicator of whether or not the series decline has ended because a lot of the people buying it are potentially just buying it because it's FF7 and aren't necessarily even fans of the series or even genre outside of that game.

Wednesday I hope we get ff16 trailer

damn was last month was brutal for PlayStation users with no news T_T

I'd be surprised if FFXVI isn't there.

Saying that, I wonder if there will be another stream for TGS because this is at 5am for Japan so I'm not sure how much Japanese content it will have.

It'll focus on launch window games. FFXVI isn't coming in Year 1 for the PS5, I doubt it will be announced there.

They were suppose to show in previous showcase but decided not to as per insider

The insider was legit. She revealed the entire lineup in her prediction which no one noticed before the conference and was later revealed to be a verified insider

Last Showcase showed game coming even in 2022, it would have made sense to show FFXVI there. The upcoming showcase will focus on games coming in the launch window of the console, I just don't see FFXVI fitting there imho. They'll keep this card close to their chest with a potential reveal at E3 2021 for a 2022 launch.

Sony really going hard after that Japanese market by having its major pre-launch showcase at a time when 99% of Japan will be asleep.

Going after Japanese market means that Japanese third parties have something to show and so far most of them ignore PS5. TGS is the last window for whatever can come out this year for every system.

PS5 still has FFXVI, RE8, P6 etc on lock so no need to worry.

It will be the go to platform for third party games in Japan because we all know Xbox ain't happening. And Switch can't run those games (and even if it could it still wouldn't get them lmao).

This new generation won't shift the market.

The N64 had some of the biggest and most influencal games of that era and still sold poorly.

Huge games are very important but so is getting a steady flow of content. The PS5 should even get those too but the PS ecosystem is facing unprecedented competition.

Small and mid tier support remains a big question mark for PS5. Early hints aren't in favour of it.

It could be a repeat of the PS3 generation. Where studios are putting Sony on notice. This time they don't have a PSP put their more interesting titles on.

I think PS5 having complete PS4 BC plays part in that. Especially for small tier support. If PS5 plays all PS4 games why dedicate more resources for early PS5 userbase (as in exclusives).
This gives zero reasons to move from PS4 to PS5 when existing PS4 userbase is basically the one PS5 will fish for buyers. And it still doesn't show what will happen with this type of games when PS4 does its circle in 2 years.

I agree Sony would need to do more then what they did during the ps4 gen.

Revenue wise (profitable hardware, digital ecosystem, Mtx/dlc and ps+ ) Strategic Tie Up for MHW and Ff7 might had led to a better gen revenue wise compared to PS3 gen.

But ps5 there might be a dip in revenue if hardware sales are around 7- mil~ and have lesser games and more marketshare goes to switch

After the surprise announcement of the Ni No Kuni mobile MMO, how do we feel about Ushiro? Will it make it?

Well that is true too. It will be the bigger PS5 exclusive titles that eventually will start to move most of PS4 userbase to PS5. I don't think low and mid tier support declines that much for PS5 in terms of releases but it has to share those titles more and more with Switch/Switch 2 which obviously probably will affect hw sales.

I can see notable decline for PS5 comparing to PS4 at number of releases.

Wouldn't that indicate that simply less games are going to be made? I don't know why most wouldn't simply make multiplatform games. Especially if the base target for the game is Switch then porting the game to PS5 should cost peanuts and while PS5 hw base will probably be even smaller than PS4 it's not like it will be Xbox levels of bad.

So I'm guessing Apple's ~50% marketshare in Japan is in trouble because their Iphone 12 event is at 2AM Japan time, I'm guessing that is how it works, right?

It would indicate PlayStation will limit its target demographics even more from where it is now. It's already happening with a number of releases on PS4 and if PS5 follows the expected path in Japan this situation will accelerate.

I feel most people who post in the Japan thread can't make sense of what they write about the market they supposedly know so much about. Why would developers and publishers omit a market, just because its sales are not on par with its competitors. The upcoming Panzer Dragoon remake for the PS4, PC and Xbox would be a waste of time in their minds if they go by the advice of the posters here.

Apple is an American company and has a product which is highly sought after everywhere. Once upon a time, Sony used to be a Japanese company...

This is an interesting statement that can be applied to many of the cyclical discussions in this thread when games that could be on the leading platform just... aren't.

If the floor falls out for PlayStation then there will definitely be less releases, even if you just consider how many publishers/developers/series are avoiding Switch and how many of them haven't been able to transition all that well.

Might have to do with sony building a audience where " lesser" games are seen as inferior to more AAA offerings and anything seen as ported from switch will be scoffed at, DQ11S might possibly be an example here

Last time I checked Sony is still a Japanese company.

The big Japanese gaming companies still use the PC/Xbox/PS as their lead platforms as they are working in worldwide markets. Nintendo leading in Japan and developers and publishers not making games for it is not a Sony issue. Whatever Sony does to attract developers to their platform, despite not leading consoles sales in Japan (outside a 10 year windows from the late 90s to the mid 2000s) is something I am sure they will continue to foster, maybe Nintendo can call them up and asks for some tips.

Switch will have over 500 titles in 2020 top 1000 and with only two other systems getting support the number will keep increasing, at least until next Nintendo system launch.
Going by companies shows better the trend last years when it comes to number of releases.

2018 - 577 / 413 / 10

I don't think there's any reason to think developers are going to drop PlayStation as their number 1 platform but also it's undeniable that unless Sony has some ace in the hole it's only going to get more difficult for those publishers reliant on PS in Japan. Not every series can afford to completely disregard the region and some are still heavily slanted towards it.

Am I missing something? Are we expecting Japanese companies to cease using Playstation as their main platform next year?

You've already seen a very real shift in low and mid tier Sony franchises moving to include Switch and that trend isn't going to magically disappear with a ridiculously expensive new console.

Shinobi pretty much confirmed MH Switch. I'm so happy I kept believing even after all the "Capcom is dumb" comments haha
