Question. What's the situation next week in Japan? Will things go as normal or will New Year's mean that Famitsu's magazine takes the week off and/or we don't get numbers from the three trackers?

4Gamer is on holidays so it won't be until Friday when Media Create updates the site we get numbers. Gamer.ne might give top 30 software on Thursday.

Famitsu hasn't put a delay announcement at the site so far. It will be Wednesday for them and they are usually in time when Media Create is delayed.

If we check last year, we didn't get numbers for neither Famitsu nor Media Create until January 6th (Friday), both at the same. This year the 6th is a Saturday, so that day is unlikely we get numbers. Monday 8th, is a national holiday, that's why until the 9th (Tuesday) we don't get 4gamers numbers.

I doubt we get numbers from Famitsu on Wednesday 3rd since it's part of the New Year Bank Holiday. If we are lucky we might get it on Friday 5th (same timing as last year).

What about Famitsu's magazine? I was shocked we got it last week, and on Christmas Day no less.

Christmas is not a holiday in Japan. All people work this day.

While it may not have the best scoring system in the world (your only goal is to point-blank enemies, build Bomb meter and then figure out how many times you can set it off per stage), this shooter from a couple ex-CAVE developers ( Hiroyuki Kimura and Yuugo Fujioka) certainly has a lot of heart. Beautiful 2D graphics with a 3D underlay, flashy score item effects and fully voiced interludes give Aka to Blue a personality that a lot of shooters have struggled to find.

Foregoing the 1CC approach, the game is divided into individual stages, which on the one hand makes it more approachable than many vert shooters, but its lack of extends and slow-moving bullet hell morass quickly ramps up the difficulty. That balance is tuned quite well throughout all the stages, but nothing stands out more than the final Stage 5, a long winding multi-phase belt with lots of popcorn enemy rushes that eventually breaks into an intimidating Boss gauntlet, which had me sweating all over my smartphone screen. Certainly much more could have been done with the scoring system, but in its brevity and concentrated simplicity, ultimately Aka to Blue succeeded in one thing a lot of games didn't this year: not overstaying its welcome.

No, and Skyrim isn't out in Japan yet. XBC2 sold 9k first week. While a good number for the series, it hardly qualifies as big.
I know it's old, but I'm surprised nobody corrected you, as you forgot the 7 in "97k". It's still "low" compared to bigger series, but it's quite a bit more that 9k (and thus, quite a bit more than Atelier portable versions). :P

It is a Nintendo thing, because Nintendo got fined for doing it (and Sega as well, but Sega aren't really relevant to the conversation).
Sony and MS both have RRPs.
What a double standard eh!? >_>

A change in that tradition (even a small one) would be interesting.

I recall Miyamoto making a comment at E3 2016 saying that Splatoon was going to change people's reception to 3D Platformers. I remember him saying Splatoon would pave the way for 3D Mario to find a larger audience. It seems like his prediction did come true with Odyssey.

Wow, thanks! I'm surprised that breath of the wild has already come so close to beating out almost all of the other Zelda games. That's... astounding. At this point it's almost certain to become at least the second best selling Zelda game ever?!

It will become the best selling Zelda entry and do so by a few million units from its closest competitor.

(I'm not combining both OoT and OoT 3D, as the latter is a remake that released 13 years later. It's not reasonable to combine the two....however, BotW will outsell both combined regardless)

Then Switch is by far the fastest right? It's only been almost 10 months since launch, quite a bit under 52 weeks.

45 weeks took 3DS to have three million sellers and 42 weeks Switch, not even DS that got it after a year, so yes.

According to Media Create, Switch is officially the fastest console on having three million sellers since launch in Japan.

Just to add to the discussion, 2 weeks ago there was a great graph made by funtastrophe showing this. I really hope he'll update that graph from time to time! Very interesting.
Here, quoting so he see this post. :)
Here's a little exercise I've been playing with for fun. While I need to hunt for bugs, I figured that I might as well pass it by here as an interesting (if ultimately useless for serious purposes) visualizaton to show one aspect of how a selection of consoles are doing. I originally tried to guess week-placement of titles that were listed as >1M in a year but lacked a specific known weekly date, but on reflection that felt like cheating. I'm now only incrementing those at the end of the period (year/half-year) they're reported for. One rare exception is FFXV, as it's recent, and a dirty guesstimate seemed more interesting for the moment (and it was just 5k away with 1.5k-2k sales per week in the last weeks it charted).

Million%20Sellers%20-%20201712161738r.png

Among the things I've so far been unable to peg down: Did NSMBU cross a million at retail in Media Create? It's listed as so (per Famitsu) in the Games Data Library, but for the life of me I couldn't find it in any of the Top 500s in GAF.xlsx or the 2017H1 that GDL posted. [WIU] Super Mario Maker is also something I was wondering about but couldn't quite peg down for sure in MC.

NB: It's currently counting two separate Wii Sports Resort skus, and there may be a small number of similar issues that may account for some seeming inconsistencies. Anyway, I enjoyed digging around and throwing this together and am definitely interested in constructive suggestions for improvement if anybody else out there finds this sort of hunt as fun as I do.

But 3DS got quite a few in the 2nd year IIRC. I expect NSW to fall behind.

Im curious as well what the record is for the first 2 million seller. Splatoon 2 should cross that by the end of January, depending on shipments.

That's better than 1 month ago (not all stores are sold out) but many stores need switch stocks, demand is so high.

Well, at least is getting better haha, and is a good sign that demand is still high. I don't want to imagine the demand when animal crossing and pokemon hit the console.

At this point, it's most likely already the 2nd best selling Zelda ever. With holiday sales, I'd put it somewhere over OoT's 7.6m, under TP's 8.6m.

It will become the best selling Zelda entry and do so by a few million units from its closest competitor.

(I'm not combining both OoT and OoT 3D, as the latter is a remake that released 13 years later. It's not reasonable to combine the two....however, BotW will outsell both combined regardless)
Sorry, i meant it in the context of assuming the highest selling Zelda is OoT with 12+ million (combining both versions), which I guess isn't fair. I think botw is certain to outdo twilight princess though, and I mean it's possible that it could eventually outsell both OoT versions if it's legs hold up as well as they have been!

While I knew botw was the fastest selling Zelda, I'd never seen the actual numbers, so I'm surprised at just how quickly it is catching up to/passing the LTD of past titles.

53 weeks - 4.032.558

Yes, that's also true, but again, I don't think LTD makes sense when talking about the future when you don't have some date you're talking about. "In 2 months, LTD will be" makes sense. "LTD will be..." with no definite date doesn't make a lot of sense. I mean, yes, it makes sense in the sense that everyone here gets that it's getting at what the total lifetime sales will be when the game has essentially stopped selling, but it doesn't make sense in the OCD sense that I'm experiencing.

It bugs me a little too, so I just add an implied "when the last copy sells" to LTD used in that context. If I am feeling especially feisty then I might read it as "the limit of LTD sales as date approaches infinitely far in the future."

Also: when in Rome...

Yes it was.

--------------------------------------

Already 3 million seller for Switch :D

Did a console ever had 3 million seller only in the first year?

Switch will also have a fastest 2 Million Seller than 3DS and extremely likely a faster 3 Million Seller. I think Splatoon 2 will definitely cross 3 Million during it's first year on the market. Splatoon 2 will remain the Switch's biggest game until Animal Crossing or HD Pokemon comes out. Not sure what the ceiling on those two games will be on the Switch in Japan, so looking forward finding out - hopefully they both release 2018.

First 1 Million Seller on 3DS on Week 42:
Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2011 (Dec 19 - Dec 25)

Something went wrong with copying this from the other thread, but here it is (reflecting the situation as of December 29th). Next update will be tomorrow, as scheduled:

Last day of the beta is done, so let's see how MHW is ranking around the world on Amazon:

Japan: 1 +0
US: 68 -8
UK: 85 -15
Germany: 38 -2
France: 67 +20
Spain: *Not in top 100*
Italy: 28 -2
Canada: 94 -46

Bonus: Let's see how DBFZ does on amazon as well, since both games release on the same day:

Japan: 72 +8
US: *Not in top 100*
UK: *Not in top 100*
Germany: *Not in top 100*
France: 21 -6
Spain: *Not in top 100*
Italy: 82 +3
Canada: * Out of top 100*

Continued decline, but the beta is over, so the real legs should start right about now. We'll see how well its legs hold on amazon.

We're back to a 3 day update schedule again btw.
