Also how long have you worked in an office enviroment, it sounds like it hasn't hit you how fucking little people care after 8+ years.

I've worked at this company going on 15 years. And for the last 5 or so I've had my own office so it's been very isolated and mundane.

Being out of work for the past 3 months has given me a new lease and perspective on life and I just want to make a go at not letting work crush my spirit.

But seriously OP, just let it come naturally. If you always felt uptight and reclusive at work, there's nothing wrong with loosening up and engaging with people more frequently. But the key here is to let it happen naturally. You can't force the lulz/chemistry, because if you do it will backfire tremendously. And for the love of god don't try to recreate any The Office jokes. It's just not going to work, that's why everyone here is reacting the way they are. Just bring your genuine personality to the table, and not some regurgitated sitcom jokes because that's just plain cringeworthy.

like fucking obviously I'll still do work and not say abusive shit.

but an occasional joke here and there or a lighter mood in general wouldn't kill anyone.

this thread won't backfire on my watch.
Ok but don't make The Office related jokes or copy the characters' annoying quotes/habits.

I had a coworker who mentioned to me at my first full time job that our office was sort of like the show "The Office". I never watched the office till way later but then I understood the similarities. We had so many weird ass people on my floor with so many clashing personalities. My floor was filled with a lot of people who were fairly recent immigrants so there was a lot of mixture of cultural norms and it led some things that would be serious HR issues anywhere else.

Also..... no OP please don't. The whole point of the office is it's parody of how stupid people can be. Don't be that stupid

Your premise is odd, but I will say that being a positive force in the workplace does wonders, as long as you're not pushing anyone too aggressively about it. A lot of people just trying to make it through the day, so if you can lighten that up a bit it really does help everything else go a little smoother.

Quirky jokes may not be the best way to go about this though. Just being affirming and positive helps the most. Even if it's just you talking about your own stuff.

of course. I shouldn't have name dropped those quotes but my overall point was just exactly what you are talking about with things playing out naturally.

I just want to be in a work environment that doesn't bore me tears.

Yep, all of this. No one is saying you can't have fun at work, but don't try to emulate a TV show.

I work in a high-stress office. We're a small group of people, and we all have to work very hard to keep things running smoothly. This morning, we all hung out in the lobby and listened to Drunk Off Titty Milk. You just have to ride the wave.

very well said. But again, as I stated in the OP my mission isn't to bring a 1:1 recreation of the show to a real life scenario. It would never ever work.

All I'm saying is that a takeaway from that show was that comedy and/or levity can and should exist even in the most mundane settings.

I thought I made that clear in the post but I guess not.
you literally said the same as the op

only fancier

Next time I'll just say "same lol". Forgive me. :P

It was great when Office Space came out and all the people who decided to do this very same thing with that movie. Ah...

and now we can have people doing The Office. great stuff.

my new life goal is to make my office more like The Office

You, as a viewer, might have taken delight in watching "The Office."

But none of the characters in the actual "Office" were authentically happy biding their time at Dunder Mifflin. They just tolerated it at best.

If your workplace is already filled with the air of quiet desperation, then congrats: new life goal achievement attained.

Tbh your work environment sounds privileged. Some of us don't have our own offices where we're bored and ponder what we can do to make the day more fun at work.

Work is just work for most people, don't be that guy that tries too hard. It has to be natural with people who are fun and if you don't got it, you just don't got it.

If I didn't take my work seriously, then people's lives would be destroyed. So, no. If you mean have a personality and don't be a stick in the mud? Yes, I don't see what that has to do with The Office or taking your job seriously?

OP can you uhh, give an example on how you'd break the ice and change the entire work environment and work culture?

Because right now everyone is just imagining you playing pranks and locking people in while setting the office on fire.

I kinda like The Office, but you can't save this thread.

Also, I suggest you choose your jokes wisely.

exactly this.

genuinely sorry work is so miserable for most of you and that you've accepted it as the status quo.
You can continue to be a dick to everyone and say we're just miserable, but your idea of making your work life more like The Office is dumb as fuck. I work in an office where everyone gets along, so you can save that bullshit. Your plan to shoehorn Dwight and Stanley quotes into your workplace speech is painfully unfunny. If I worked with you and that was your attempt at humor, I would go out of my to avoid ever interacting with you. You would be better off saying "very nice" in a Borat voice whenever you found the opportunity. Maybe then people would just think you were being ironic, instead of realizing you have no sense of humor.

Maybe you should stick to something simple, like a nice "I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER?" poster to hang in your office.

Everyone is being so harsh on OP :(

You've got good points, OP. Liven up the place, make some jokes, don't stress too much. Of course take your job seriously, but enjoy yourself while doing it~

thanks for this.

taking things out of context and way too seriously is the cool thing to do on the internet. I'm not worried about it.

You keep implying that other people must be unhappy, but I don't think anyone else here is pretending they live in a sitcom to make it through their work day.

Nah, he's 100% right. He's saying what OP needs to hear.

at a very surface (very surface) glance the office is just a light hearted show

i think that's what OP was really trying to bring to his office. less about the making people uncomfortable with shitty jokes and references

idk maybe it's because i too have been on an office binge watch lol

It just makes me think of the kid in high school who endlessly quoted Monty Python and Eddie Izzard because he thought it made him funny instead of annoying the piss out of everyone. No one likes that guy. Don't be that guy.
