Are only certain games' fans allowed to act like their favorite game is some holy grail ?
Most people don't act like a game is some kind of holy grail although people are getting dangerously close with Bloodborne. So, no, preferably not.

I'll do it too powdered wigs are cheaper than I thought.
Is this how things are gonna be from now on? Jim makes an inflammatory video to rile up people and then harvests it for another video? Literally the snake eating its own dick.
The new level of trolling: The Lazy trollMaking money being a professional troll, Jim is truly living the dream.
that punching game is so addictive lolNot playing Shenmue in Shenmue was the most enjoyable thing about Shenmue. I wasted a fuckton of time playing at the You Arcade, playing slots doing random shit. I took me forever to play through it. It was a decent game and as close to a sandbox as we could get to in that time.

Fantastic post! I can understand not liking and even outright hating the game (I have a few friends that cannot stand it), but the amount of people that go out of their way to inform others about how the fans are wrong is just completely bizarre. Are only certain games' fans allowed to act like their favorite game is some holy grail ?
Its one thing to bash the game. It is another thing to constantly imply the fanbase don't know what good games are and only enjoyed Shenmue because of the graphics. Its like you aren't allowed to praise Shenmue because it is "objectively" a bad game. Yet fans are supposed to not act offended ? Am not defending the trolls commenting on that video. Heck I highly doubt that many Shenmue fans even replied for him to make video like that but w/e.
Go see any Shenmue related thread it will be filled with smug comments like " Shenmue is a trash game and people who praise it are deluded "
Like no shit a 20 year old game will have issues when compared to games of today , but what exactly is the point of saying the second part ? Why cant people just call it a bad game and leave it at that. But NO we gotta downplay all the people saying its good too. Because " Muh opinion is objective and yours is not ".
The hate Shenmue receives is so weird considering how niche it is , I guess people just hate smaller fanbases praising their games as the best. It always has to be some big mainstream hundred million seller that are allowed to be praised.
Know what I did next? I went on with my day and continued enjoying what I like.
My friend, by writing how Shenmue is a 'shite' game you sound like a troll yourself ! It is quite clearly not a shite game, there are many fans of the game. Yes it has its flaws but it was rightly lauded at the time.I've been following Jim since 2008 when he was at Destructoid and I'm still a fan of him. At Destructoid he'd post news stories about Bobby Kotick with gay porn as the header image, write long editorials taking the absolute piss out of something, write reviews for AAA games and sometimes give them (deservingly) lower scores than the mainstream press.
People say he's a troll, but he's not a troll because he genuinely believes in his output and is the reason why I've liked him for so long as he plainly does not give a fuck and gives his opinion regardless.
Back to Shenmue, don't know where this outrage was when Giant Bomb did the Shenmue endurance run because they said it was a shite game too, and is why I believe Jim is right to say it's a shite game, because it is a shite game. Even in his video he gave props to the intention behind it but come the fuck on guys, it's shite.
Back to Commentocracy, while I still preferred Jim's output on Destructoid than the stuff he does now (although he's really rectified some of the genuinely problematic opinions he had around the late 2000's), him dressing up as an 1800's aristocrat to troll rabid fandoms and "gamers" is something I can really get behind.
The man doesn't give a shit and likes to have a laugh and wind people up when it's deserved.
Maybe it's a British thing....
both your opinions are shite. because the game is good.Back to Shenmue, don't know where this outrage was when Giant Bomb did the Shenmue endurance run because they said it was a shite game too, and is why I believe Jim is right to say it's a shite game, because it is a shite game. This whole saga about Jim Sterling and his opinion of Shenmue really highlights for me the reason why I stopped watching his videos and why I don't think he's a very good or interesting critic.
Shenmue is a game that set out to evoke, genre trappings aside, the day-to-day experiences of a high school aged young man in 1980's Yokosuka, Japan. The problem for Sterling, though, is not that Shenmue failed at what it set out to accomplish. Rather, the issue is that Shenmue succeeded, and that Jim Sterling does not value that in any way, shape, or form.
A movie or a book could deal with a similar approach to the same subject matter and be respected for it. However, a game, as Sterling would have it, can't do this sort of thing because it's not "fun" and it wastes too much of the player's time, whatever the hell either of those criticisms mean.
It is ultimately coming from the mindset of the consumer report. Sterling treats Shenmue not as a work of fiction but as a product that failed to function according to the arbitrary standards that he thinks all games ought to follow. Shenmue is a failure because it does not follow a narrow definition of what "fun" is and for finding meaning in daily tedium when it really should have been filled with wall to wall distractions.
This is a stifling mindset that serves to hold games back as a medium, placing limits on what games can do and what they can be about
Games are not movies. If you took all the components that make up the Shenmue experience and translate it to a film would still get torn apart by critics for basically the same reasons. There's a reason filmmakers learned to pace and edit things in a way that cuts out/abstracts mundane routine activities unless it's of immediate relevance to the plot.
The man doesn't give a shit and likes to have a laugh and wind people up when it's deserved.

Nah he has a patreon. So no monetisation on the YouTubes
Shadow of Memories deserves a Onimusha/REmake remaster... but oh well, Konami. There is always other cool little games in the veins out there, like NDS's Time Hollow,Edit: I understand your pain, Shenmue fans, one of my favourite games is Shadow of Memories and it hurts me when others can't see its greatness

He is pathetic but not pathetic in a sympathetic way which pisses me off even more. Like he's actively smug about the fact he is a pathetic human being and an absolute scumsucker with the laziest content imaginable. I can't describe it really. He's just a revolting internet personality. I don't comment on these threads usually tho.
I presume it's because it's mainly kids who watch youtube? or at least the younger gamers.Holy shit, and I thought people were kidding about the salt. :S
What is it about Youtubers that makes people flip out like this, especially a rare one like Jim who isn't actually racist / sexist / homophobic? Is it just envy of their success?

Besides, didn't Jim give it an 8/10?
But SA isn't shit. It's an early 3D platformer which tried alot of different things. At worst its pretty average, but I'd say above average simply because it tried. Why do so many peeps default to games either being GOAT or SHIT anyway? Its almost always one extreme end of the spectrum or the other. Not stating my opinion on shenmue here, but there being many fans of a thing isn't an argument that it isn't shite.
Case in point: Sonic adventure.

Indeed, but you misinterpreted what I wrote. Let me try again. Not stating my opinion on shenmue here, but there being many fans of a thing isn't an argument that it isn't shite.
