Retail PS4 sales are a hair under 1.6M in Japan, and the game was supply constrained week 1 which would lead to more digital sales. So that's ~800K digital, not 900K. Plus it was already rumored in the MC thread that MHW sold 2.4M including digital in Japan.
A 50% increase from digital sales is not far-fetched, especially for a game that is so small in size, is this popular, and that was again supply constrained.
And again, PS4 took 72% of sales in MS's second strongest market, the UK. The rest of EUR, PS4 probably holds a much higher share of sales.
Ps4 took 72% of the retail sales, which also counts bundles.
And xbone is known to have a higher digital to retail rate compared to Ps4.
In the US it will be closer to 50/50, but PS4 will probably still have a >50% share of sales.
Again, retail. The whole point of this thread is to discuss physical sales and MHW outsold Pubg which like I said has 100% of the sales as digital.
So no, I disagree that 800K digital in Japan is more far-fetched than the XB1 version being over 1M digitally, considering I don't think MHW sold much more than 1M digital+retail combined on XB1.[/quote]
And I disagree that a digital share way higher (IIRC Sony in their fiscal reports said just now Ps4 achieved a 30% rate for digital sales, and that was because digital sales had a big increase over 2016) than average is likely in Japan of all places.
Also, the game didn't launched on retail on xbone in Asia, so it's yet another reason to more people to buy digitally there.
There are even popular user feedback to add Chinese language on the xbone version:

Even if we went with a safe number and say 2M sales in Japan, that leaves 4M. Now let's give XB1 a favorable 40% of the remaining 4M (when it is likely to be much lower than that)... that's 1.6M retail+digital. That would have to be a pretty damn high digital split to be over 1M, in an already unlikely scenario.
I don't think 1.6 million is unlikely at all, the game is currently the best selling xbox game digitally and in all markets that we have data for. Do you honestly think 1.6 million for the best current selling game on the console is being overly positive?
Again, I think MHW XB1 sales are 1.1-1.2M retail+digital globally, which is still good considering the large majority of those sales are probably in the US. And it is typically not a game that XB fans will buy.
Well, this thread says otherwise, xbox owners are buying the game, otherwise it wouldn't be the top selling :P
I also don't know if I agree with the majority of the sales being on the US, Unless the US represents for far more than 50% of xbone user base, this is clearly a game that has world wide appeal.
And yeah, Ps4 had exclusive bundles and marketing rights, but it does so with pretty much any AAA release and the sales are not usually that low. The reason why xbone game sales are overall with similar ratios compared to Ps4 is when you factor Japan, but excluding Japan from the equation xbone usually fares a lot better.
PUBG was likely huge at launch, plus in December MS was giving it away free with XB1X purchase.
The game was plagued with bad press due to performance issues and bugs, so a steep decline in popularity is not surprising to me.
That's not to say that PUBG isn't popular today... it was just selling at an insane rate early on. It's not surprising that things have cooled down, especially when it already has a very large install base on PC, and development of the PC version is quite a bit ahead.
Here's the thing: Ms announced 3 million in january. After the X bundles were over, as well the holiday sales. And still the game sold another 1 million in less than two weeks later. Also on february 6th they released the bundle with S console.
And Monster Hunter World still topped it's sales, and we are still in the 15 day period since they announced 4 million sales. Any day on this week we might get the news that pubg is now at 5 million
