Thinking of maps, I don't think this has been posted yet. Here's an awesome online, Google-style map of everything if you're so inclined:

http://www.kxmode.com/U7map/#3/-60.02/-45.97

(Personally, I'd hold off using this unless you get stuck, especially if it's your first time playing the game. Half the fun is exploring the world and making new discoveries.)

How is the 'K' hotkey supposed to work? Doesn't seem to do anything for me. I still have to hunt in my bag for keys.

I did see some discussion earlier in the thread that in Exult that NPCs wouldn't turn off light sources during the day if you turned them on. That must have been fixed at some point because they do that in my game.

'K' doesn't work for me either. I think it's alt+k, though I've always just used the shortcut bar at the top (that you have to enable under misc options). Alt+k does something for sure, but I don't have a door I could test it on right now.

K works for me. I've been using it the whole game. Just press it and then click on the thing you want unlocked. I don't have the keyring mod on, though. I wonder if that's the difference?

Could be. The Exult documentation says:
k BG: Try all keys to unlock a lock
k SI: Use keyring
Alt-k SI: Try all keys to unlock a lock
So it's quite possible that k uses the keyring with the mod. I can definitely say that k has never worked for me so far.

Yeah it seems like the keyring mod overwrites the Key hotkeys. 'K' uses the keyring so Alt-K it is for "try keys".

Got the Hoe of Destruction and I'm now running with a 4 man party. Companions keep stealing everything. I'm on my way to break the game, but that's okay.

I've been exploring the area around the capital mostly, found a cave with a unicorn and another where I got some experience from little beholder and slimes. Was attacked by some people in chain armor so now my group is decently equipped. Walked all the way to Yew and back, got some training there and visited Iolo's old hut, which was cool. Now I am thinking about doing some Mainquest stuff, guess that means meeting this Batlin guy. I heard some Rumors about Minoc however, do I even have to talk to him? I assume I have to become member of that fellowship huh?

I love the freedom of exploration and the fine selection of drawers and chests to steal from. Can I sleep in every bed I find?

I guess this is relevant for this thread:

I got so mad when I saw the announcement "EA announces Origin" and it was just the revamp of EA Download Manager.

I decided to wait to post my thoughts in here until I was completely sure I was into the game. Now that I've had to pry myself away from playing the past couple days, I'll go ahead and share some fun moments I've had with the game. So far I've basically explored all of Trinsic, Britain, and a good chunk of the surrounding areas like some of Lock Lake and a couple caves. I've gone into the game almost completely blind.

Cool moments:

-The first time I tried stealing, Petre the stable boy saw me through open window shutters. Line of sight is a thing, which is neat.
-This also led me to realize closing shutters is a pretty consistent way to lure NPCs away so you can steal their stuff, since they need that shit open all the time.
-Only thing I couldn't get into in Trinsic was that back room in the Provisioner's place. I used probably one of the only two things I heard prior to playing this game - that you can stack crates - to make a staircase to his windows. Couldn't get in but still impressed that you can actually walk up the crates.
-The barkeeper will walk over to NPCs sitting in pubs (who are constantly shouting at them) to ask them what they want. Then the barkeeper will go back and make something during which you can see every step, and bring it over. Really impressive, don't think I've seen that in an RPG before.
-I figured out how to forge a sword in the wrecked blacksmith's place which was really satisfying. When I got to Britain I snuck into the Bakery and learned how to make rolls, and then the cloth-maker's place to make bandages and clothes.
-Was apprehensive about adding Spark to my party until I saw that kid's meaty fucking legs and arms. He carries the food and water.
-I talked to a unicorn in a cave.
Can't say I've heard "virgin detector" in an RPG either.
-Tried to steal from the jeweler at night by busting open the glass, got copped immediately. Gonna try again by going in alone with an invisibility potion.
-Tried to pickpocket from a Gargoyle's chest that ended up rigged with explosives. Iolo got fucking blown in half so I reloaded.
-Shenanigans while wearing the Fellowship's necklace are fun, like NPC's skipping the missionary spiel after seeing it, or Batlin calling you out as a phony.
-Stealing all the silver serpent venom from the butcher in Paws and selling it to the apothecary in Britain was satisfying, but then I needed a vial of it for a quest so I regretted it.
-Figured out where the Hoe of Destruction is, but need to find the key. Hoping it's not under all that garbage by the lake. I feel kinda bad for stealing Mack's eggs and then selling them back to him.
-I got a kick out of the meta books in Lord British's place, like the one giving a religious explanation for why doors on the west and north sides are bad.
-And I'll stop there. I have like four pages of notes with quests and stuff I need to try, I'm very impressed with the game overall and really enjoying it.

The major thing that bugs me about the game is being so zoomed into the game world. It makes it really hard to establish a mental map of where things are and where you are in relation to everything, for instance I'm constantly having a hard time trying to find where certain buildings are in Britain despite having been over everything multiple times. I just learned about the sextant thing though so that's helping, I need to rebind map to a different button. The other gripe I have is some of the consistency/bugginess when it comes to NPCs and scripting, like meeting Sentri for the first time and then he says something to Shamino who I haven't even seen yet. Or as I mentioned in a previous post, making the avatar costume but only buying it works to start the audition. edit: Oh yeah, having to re-dig through dialogue trees to hear things again kinda sucks.

I went back to Yew to buff up Spark at the Trainer and decided to see what's up with that mountain lake on the way back to Britain and... Oh. Very good.

Any tips for making quick gold,or at least for getting food?
If you haven't, you can exchange gold nuggets and gold bars at the mint in Britain. You can also exchange silver snake venom for gold at the apothecary. And you can trade in loaves of bread for gold at the bakery in Britain. You can kill animals for food; you can also learn the "create food" spell which will drop a bit of food on the ground. In terms of money:value on food, though, always buy mutton in Trinsic for 3 gold apiece. Everything else in the game is a ripoff.

A big part of the fun when it comes to these games was trying to figure all this stuff out on my own. The game within the game.

If you want to translate the in-game runic follow these steps that I found on GOG:

f you have cheats enabled In Exult, you can press F2 to bring up the cheat menu. Press N, 0, and then enter(return). You'll now be in the npc edit menu for the Avatar. Press N to reach the npc flags menu. Pressing 4 will set 'Read' to Y(yes) in the menu. Keep pressing X until you exit the cheat menu. Now other languages will be translated.

Whoops I have no idea how or why I posted this.

But regarding gold, it's really easy to rack up money at the casino using the pause function in Exult to get the timing right. I made mad bank before it occurred to me that I was cheating.

I regretted nothing.

Well I started. Currently looking for food because Iolo keeps whining at me. IDK if it is because I accidentally slept in the stables while I was trying to investigate :p. Trinisc seems pretty big to me atm and not sure how to figure out what buildings are from the outside.

Most buildings have a plaque outside, but it's often written in runes so you'll have to refer to the manual. Or use the cheat mentioned above.

In the end, I got it . Bad game.

Do I have to worry about food/gold in this game - can I just buy any food I find or will that quickly drain my funds ?

I'm not sure if you even need to buy much food. There's plenty of food lying around in chests and barrels you can take, and the need for food doesn't appear to be so great that you need to constantly be replentishing your supply.

Top man, I was getting sick of translating everything, although I understand it's part of the charm of the game.

I'm trying not to steal in this game from other characters belonging at least. Hopefully there will be plenty of food in other areas .

Anyone getting weird framerate fluctuations? The game will be running along at 96fps and super smooth and then just drop down to 22 fps for an extended period of time. Needless to say it plays much nicer at 96 fps.

I don't know about FPS numbers, but the game does slow down if you get the attention of enemies.

Yeah I saw a couple rune signs in the streets at least (not sure if those are the ones you mean or if they are street signs). I ended up pulling up a map online and it was helpful to see the layout of the town and some key structures labeled (including the tavern I was looking for).

I just glanced at the runes in the manual, maybe I'll invest in figuring them out or leave the manual open as I play.

I did figure out feeding people too! At first I just was putting it all in their bags and they were still whining but then I found the food in their bags and looked up in detail how to actually make them eat it :P.

If you press H in game to bring up the key reference, do have this?

VJdQtrN.png
Are those extensive keyboard shortcuts a general feature of the game or an addition from Exult?
Would have been so much easier starting this game if I knew there were these keyboard shortcuts. I've done everything with the mouse and I needed to download all supplemental stuff from the GOG version and going through it to find out how to use a goddamn key. This game does not explain itself well not even in the manual which is only a story recap and some info on the setting. The reference card that finally told me how to do anything only mentions mouse clicks and shortcuts for menu screens.
The game could also use more stats. Hunger is super cryptic. Companions say: "When do we eat?", you feed them bread and a minute later they ask again. What kind of metabolism do they have? It seems like they are infinite holes for food.

And how do you get the face row at the bottom?

I have always seen screenshots of the Ultima games but never played one myself. This game plays completely different from what I imagined (and not really for the better). I think the inventory and stat screens are the worst I have ever seen in an RPG. But I guess it is a point of it being bogged down by traditions from times where you could not do any better. I don't think anything outside of the open world and NPC schedules aged well.

Also on the Blacksmiths Shop:
Was there a ghost there and my characters reacted to it? One chair seemed to rotate of its own and the characters behaved a bit strange. But it could also be strange pathfinding and lagginess as I encountered on different occasions.

StormEagle Almost all of the hotkeys are added in Exult. The original version is a very mouse-driven game. The main hotkeys that exist in the original DOS version are Z for stats, C for combat, I for inventory, and I think H changes handedness of the mouse. There's more keys in the sequel, like IIRC F for quick feed is available. Overall, Exult is a much better experience for the game because it brings a bunch of hotkeys, and also backports some conveniences from part 2.

As for this, well, different food has different nutritional value. Your characters have a 31-point food status, and a lot of things like apples only give 2 points, whereas mutton gives 24.

And regarding your spoiler, that's supposed to make it seem like it's been visited by some otherworldly force. It wasn't a bug, but there's no ghost either.

Enable the status bar, I think you can press R to toggle it. If you keep pressing it it'll change positions along the bottom. It's extremely helpful since you can just click or drag to the portraits instead of the actual characters, and it helps better understand what the hell is happening during combat.

Ultima has always been a little obscure, but I honestly think IV, V, and VI manage menus, stats, and instructions better than VII. Those three have always stood out to me as nearly perfect. With a little adjustment, all three are very easy to play today too. Just get ready for some confusing maps/dungeons and a whole lot of note-taking.

That said, VII is the strongest story with the best writing and is much easier to use from a dialog/story point of view. It's the first game in the series that doesn't require you type instructions or keywords in conversations. I'd keep playing with the Exult updates. As much as VII bugs me, it's still a worthwhile experience. When it first came out, it was something of a technological wonder.

Thank you both. It'll help during my future playsessions. It also got me to study the keyboard command section from Exult. It will save a lot of tedious clicking.
I did not think the smithy thing was a bug, just the game might have been struggling like it always seems to be.

Also, is it possible to fuck up quests by talking to people in the wrong order or was that a bug?
I got the venom from the little shits chest and told his father about it. I then clicked on 'case solved' (or something similar) and everyone was still behaving like Tobias was the thief without any other dialog options. Did I there 'choose' to play the blaming charade? I thought it would end the accusations on Tobias and the quest. When I restarted from a previous save and did not click on that option I was able to confront the little shit and tell the widow that her son was innocent.

How many container can I store on the carpet and is it safe to do so?

Edit: Ah, that's why I could not finish that quest in Paws properly

Sorry if this has been said but long thread, what resolution should I set it at for a 1080p monitor? Or even a smaller resolution in window mode? Whatever would work best for the visual style with the least artifacting.

Also, if you've finished this already and want more (yet less grandiose) of this skewed perspective role play gaming you can try Knights of the Chalice, a rather ancient indie CRPG with a D&D-like ruleset, system and campaign. They've been working on a sequel for so long, it's like, beyond Age of Decadence level for anyone who was following that and thought it's going slow before releasing, lol. KotC2 also basically does away with graphics in favor of gameplay and has a grid-like presentation with icons/emblems for objects and what not. But yeah, it's all good as long as the game is good :)

For 1080, you'll have to have some form of interpolation to use AR correction. Set the scaler to point, x5. Then in the middle section, set it to bilinear for fill quality and to fit mode.

Thanks a lot, somehow I missed the part after the x1200 stuff in that post and thought it's restricted to advice for that :)

I take it Exult supports Serpent Isle and what not as well?

Anyone played the Ultima 1 remake's A Legend if Reborn tech demo back in the day? Man what could have been! I'd still play that thing had it been completed, it was so well done.
