I know everyone is focused on the coronavirus, but Syria seems like even more of a shitshow than usual right now. Assad and Putin doing their usual campaign of war crimes, while an isolated Erdogan seems to be going full neo-Ottoman wackjob and pissing off everybody.

I dont know if the people that keep saying 'remember the flu kills like 60k people a year or whatever' know that if this virus was as widespread as the flu that number would be over a million.

A 2% kill rate and long living droplet transmission risk outside the body

Yeah you better fucking believe coronavirus is serious

Spread over large populations this thing can do serious damage as we have seen already

Its not a joke but panic doesnt help us either. It should be handled with seriousness and preparedness so of course im more concerned than i normally would be since this administration is so incompetent

Gaetz' announcement is that he will no longer take money from PACs 🤷‍♂️

At #CPAC2020, Matt Gaetz just pledged to swear off PAC money. "I will never again accept a donation from a federal political action committee," he said.

I'm somewhat baffled by Sanders' embrace of the 'democratic socialism' moniker when the s-word is such a trigger on the right, but also at least equally baffled that none of the Democratic candidates will point out that if you don't like socialism, I guess we'll get rid of public schools and social security too.

Basically, would the Medicare for All fight be any easier if Bernie came up with a different word for "socialist"?
"Socialism" does not mean public goods and/or a welfare state!

Not to mention reinfections. Big cities could mean constant reinfections.

It's both hilarious and terrifying how Trump finally gets a big domestic challenge to manage and just hands the reins over to Pence. He is incapable of solving even the smallest of problems, let alone something that could spiral out into a real crisis.
Remember that he wanted Kasich as his VP originally and tried to sweeten the deal by telling him he could do all the actual work of being president. Trump has always only been in it for the glitz and glamour, he doesn't give a shit about the presidency beyond the title.

It would be worse if we rebranded it

Better to educate people that socialism doesn't mean all the horrible dystopian things the right will try to convince you it means

We already live in a somewhat hybrid socialist culture in some respects though behind what other civilized nations have implemented

Especially in regards to health care which ding ding seems to be a universally powerful topic right now for good reasons

It always astounds me just how cringey and pathetic CPAC is. And somehow it manages to outdo itself in terribleness every time. It's equally astounding that people can go to this thing and seriously think, "yes, these are the people I want to entrust the reigns of leadership to."

The basic problem is that in the 70's and 80's, the conservative movement actually had a support base of fairly normal middle class people. Now, a lot of these middle class people were racist and sexist, but they also acted normally and knew how to appeal to Bob in Peoria. Like, Reagan's message is ugh to social democrats like this thread, but if you were an iron worker in Wisconsin, it was a positive unifying message you could understand.

The issue is that the conservative movement in 2020 consists mostly of grifters, weirdos who don't fit within their own identity, rich people, and religious people.

"The Trump administration's request for $2.5 billion to mitigate the coronavirus pandemic is likely to become an unstoppable legislative vehicle — as must-pass legislation that congressional leaders of both parties could use to ram through a reauthorization of the FBI's call detail records program. Such a move would sidestep the House's reform effort and instead push through a clean reauthorization of the program."

Coronavirus Spending Bill Could be Used to Cement Spying Authorities

The congressional effort to rein in the government’s surveillance powers before a March 15 deadline could run up against a new opponent: a new coronavirus.

I've decided to vote for Biden. I am not comfortable with Sanders as the nominee. I no longer need to vote for him to stop Bloomberg because Biden led the latest poll in OK. Warren has no chance in hell.
I knew it. You really do like Cher too.

You're not alone.

Dow is down over 1k at the moment
Yeah, the realization that this is only the start is beginning to sink in. This is going to be affecting business at almost every level for months, if not a year or more.

My god, are we finally going to see the markets fall out from under Trump's bloated ass? About damn time. Better that it happen now, too than under whatever Democratic administration follows. Plus it takes away Trump's whole great economy schtick.

I've been selling a decent amount for the last couple of months, so I'm probably gonna start putting a bit of that in starting tomorrow, but yeah, I'm not so sure this is gonna be the end of this. Market's been looking for an excuse to tank these insane valuations and corona virus as a story isn't going to go away.

They have been propping the market up for almost a year and a half. I think they are going to let the crash happen since they have the Coronavirus excuse. I don't think it will help them though, people are going to be pissed and looking to blame someone.

Luckily the coronavirus is fake news (or we have a vaccine basically ready to go, depending on which line is more reassuring) or I'd be concerned that perhaps the administration is not well-equipped to handle the situation

S&P 500 down 4.4% today after Trump's informative, measured and non-partisan speech last night calmed markets, including his wise decision to place someone in charge who has a proven stellar track record in the field. Oh wait, none of that happened, except for the market drop.

The stock market is now up 1.3% in almost 18 months. Thanks Trump.

Stock Market starting to look very good to me!

I knew I should have taken all my money out of retirement and put it in a shoebox. :(

But no seriously, let's see if a) the mishandling of a pandemic and b) the decimation of the economy are enough that white folks will prioritize these things over being deeply racist.
I have no room to complain because we have pensions on top of our investments...but man if it doesn't make me want to throw up. I grew up solidly middle class. My parents had no investments and no real savings. My dad had a pension and my mom, when she retired, also had a pension. That was it. My husband grew up dirt fucking poor. (True story, the house he grew up in didn't actually have central heating in Ohio.) So, we pretty much had no idea how to do stuff with money once we started doing okay. We have a guy who kinda walks us through shit, and my own instinct when I see how much we've lost in the last two weeks is GET THE MONEY AND HIDE IN THE SOCK DRAWER WHAT THE FUCK.

Yeah, I feel you. I'm from a working class family too, and now as a married adult, we have IRAs and stocks on top of my pension, but then I get a report from my brokerage firm and I feel OHMIGOD EVERYTHING I WORKED FOR IS EVAPORATING panic inside, even though I know that I should be rational.

As someone who doesn't invest, nice. The one thing that may actually harm Trump in a big way is the stock market going to shit and his simultaneous incompetence in handling a potential health disaster.

But when did you invest? How much have your investments appreciated since you started investing?

This was a bad week, no doubt, but don't make yourself sick over it. The market is still up year-over-year.

The biggest concern I have at this point is how Trump will inevitably lash out looking for someone to blame. We already seeing problems with people avoiding or accosting people from China or Asian descent in places around the world. I am hoping democratic contenders and supporters are ready to protect and redirect the blame back at Trump, they are going to need the protection because for most if not all it won't be any of their fault and are as much if not more victims of this virus. This attack is going to becoming so we best prepare for the counter now.
