Probably just means a Thursday release(11/1) with the rest of the eShop weekly updates. Tomorrow would be an auspicious release date for a niche title.

The 31th October is one of the biggest days of the year for sales of digital games.

Like, everybody is buying games in digital stores, with the festivity of Halloween.

Indeed, I can't think in a best release day. Because you will have your game highlighted in the first row of new releases, for all the people visiting the eShop in one of the days of the year with more traffic.

But this day is reserved for a selected group of partners. Nintendo has only chosen for this day games with an horror thematic. And of course, 'Phantasy Star', because Sega is seen as a strategic partner for Nintendo.

Oh my god, I could not wrap my head around Crypt of the Necrodancer... I need to give it another try sometime but it did not click for me at all

(I have very bad rhythm, so this is probably more my problem than the game's)

Debating picking up night in woods... not really big into narrative games lately (besides Yakuza) but thinking I need some non-grind games since rouge/grind games are pretty much the only games I own on switch and mostly play (dead cells, Monster Hunter GU, gungeon, immortal redneck, etc.).

Same here, so I went to YouTube to watch the first few minutes. Right at the start, the intro text was so good that I closed the video and bought the game.

Sooooo psyched for this game:

This looks great. I love fast, relentless shooters. Problem is, this kind of visuals triggers my simulation sickness within 5 minutes.

A friendly reminder that while 'Super Smash Bros Ultimate' has a BIG audience, this is for sure, not all the people is interested in the game. In the same way as not all the people is interested in 'Read Dead Redemption 2'.

These games don't do much for me either. I think my most anticipated release for November is Nairi. I will probably pick up Smash, but might not. It depends on my mood around release and whatever else releases.

This post needs some music (and the shopkeeper singing along with it.

I think there is a character that doesn't need to move to the beat. Never used it though.

Night in the Woods is one of the strongest narratives I've experienced on Switch so far along with Read Only Memories and The Missing. Extremely charming and "real" game.
Hey guys, regarding Phantasy Star: And that's it, ok?
OH GOD WHY DO YOU HATE ME SO MUCH
This is a big bummer, but thanks for sharing. Maybe Thursday?

Those both sound like great picks. Thanks for the advice!

No problem!

I personally enjoyed this game very much; the dialogue is sharp and witty, and the setting creates a really immersive sense of place. However, I should warn that the gameplay is mostly light, which might be worth considering if you're not big into narrative games lately.

While there are several mini games that were fun to play (including a simple retro rouge lite you can boot up in the main character's computer), the bulk of the game involves walking around locations (light platforming) and interacting with the people and the environment.

I personally enjoyed the pace and flow of the game as a whole, but would say the main takeaways were definitely the story and characterizations.

Big Phantasy Star fan here. And yes, I have pretty long fingers.
Oh this is really cool. It's my first Phantasy Star game as I completely missed Sega's titles other than Sakura Taisen. You must be very happy with the Ages release.

Is Phantasy Star actually good or is this a nostalgia thing?

I'm a huge RPG fan so I'm interested in looking into it but I remember playing the first game years ago in some Sega collection and didn't care for it. It reminds me of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, where, despite being a huge fan of both, if you weren't there playing these games when they were new, you won't really appreciate or enjoy them today.

You bet! I play Phantasy Star at least once a year and the automapping feature will make my replays so much better.

Quoting myself from the other thread:

I love both FF6 and Phantasy Star, but they're very different games.

FF6 is plot-heavy and has loads of character development; Phantasy Star characters barely speak, but their design is so great I think you'll instantly like them and let your imagination fill in the blanks. I mean, one of the characters is a talking cat who casts cure and barrier spells and throws boomerangs at enemies using its mouth! 0_0

Phantasy Star is more about exploring the world and dungeon crawling, much like the first Ultima games, but with that awesome Japanese style. I think the beautiful high-tech medieval setting aged pretty well. There are three planets and they all feel unique. Monster design is absolutely wonderful, music is really good and the 3D dungeons still look great after all these years.

Yes, it is an old game with outdated mechanics, simplistic combat and little plot exposition, but I think it's leagues ahead of the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games (which I also love, by the way).

I'm really bummed with the lack of touch controls. 'Deemo' and 'VOEZ' ruined these type of games for me, if they don't include touch control options. Specially, after seeing that this is game designed to be controlled with touch controls in its original iOS release.

By the way, I was very busy in the weekend, but thanks for your very detailed impressions of 'Magical Scroll Tactics' and 'Luke & Rebecca'. It's great to read feedback for these type of Japanese oddities.

You are the MVP in this October thread. Keep the good work!

Appreciate the kind words! Many hidden gems throughout the eShop. Gotta take a chance and do some blind purchases once in a while, lol.

Made a quick and dirty video of some gameplay using clips I recorded:

First off, this game is available on mobile for free. So if you want to try it out, by all means. One of the big differences is there are no touchscreen options in the Switch version.

On the main menu, you have various options:

Matinee - Arcade mode. 3 stages. Each stage has about 25 songs to choose from. A total of over 70+ songs.

Concours - Challenge mode. Each challenge has 4 songs and they give you a mission (for example, the first set asks you to get a total score of 5,500,000 or higher). 30 challenges in total (15 with 4 keys and 15 with 6 keys).

Both of these modes can be played with 4 keys or 6 keys.

4 keys involves Left & Up on the Dpad, plus X & A.
6 keys involves Left/Up/Right on the Dpad, and Y/X/A

For Arcade mode, you can choose between 3 difficulties: Light, Normal and Technical.

Ensemble - Co-op play with each person using a single joycon. You can also choose between the 3 difficulties. Each person can play on their own difficulty. This mode is sort of a mix between competitive and cooperative. You can aim to get the higher score between the 2 of you, but you're also trying to get 5 stars on the song as a team.

Library - This is where your stats are. Sorted by composer. You can see what songs you've gotten 5 stars on but you can't see the actual score in this menu. When you're choosing a song is when you can view your score. You can also read a little bio on each composer. To give you an idea of how many charts there are between 4 and 6 keys, there is a total of 2310 stars to collect in Arcade mode!

Piano - Your collectables. When you switch pianos, you change the look of the play field.

Settings - Not much to this. You can change the sync if you feel the music/timing is off. You can also adjust the volume of the sound you get when you miss a note. Not a fan of that sound so I'll probably turn it off.

For Arcade and Challenge modes, you can choose Single play or Ranking play. Playing on Ranking is the only way for your score to appear on the leaderboards. Each song has leaderboards but it's weird you can only view them after you choose a song. There's no menu for you to check whenever you want. Also, after you finish your 3 song set in Arcade, you'll see the total ranking aka the highest scores from the 3 combined songs. Sorted by Top 100 and wherever you're ranked in that 100 (if you made it).

When you're in the middle of a song and you pause the game, when you unpause it, there's a little buffer to give you time to focus so you don't lose combo.

Something that really bothers me is there's no Free Play option. There isn't a mode that has all the songs. You're forced to play through Arcade mode, only having a handful of songs during each stage.

There are 6 different ratings you can get depending on how you hit the note:

Your enjoyment of the game may depend on how much you enjoy classical music. It's a well made game but because of this simple fact, I don't know how much time I will put into it. Some weird decisions like not being able to view leaderboards at any time or some sort of free play mode bother me. I wouldn't say it's a must play game but I don't regret my purchase.

Nope, it's the original Master System game. Let me quote myself again from the other thread:

And to people asking for the Playstation 2 remake... I'm a big, big Phantasy Star fan (it's my favorite game series ever), but the remake is pretty unremarkable. It's not bad, but the music is horrible, graphics are competent but boring and the expanded dialogue is a bit dull and hurts the feel of the game (the original wasn't intended as a story-heavy game and it shows in the remake).

I honestly think you're better off playing the original. This coming from one of the guys from the team that helped hack and fantranslate the remake. I know the remake pretty well and I poured many, many hours into it to get it localized into Portuguese, but I did it because I love the franchise. Quality-wise, the remake just isn't worth all the effort me and my friends had.

Of course having the remake would be nice and I would love to see it added, but I'm glad M2 spent their time on all of the additions to the original instead of porting the remake.

I must confess skepticism in Just Shapes And Beats despite the glowing praise. Between the simply-looking graphics and awful name I just refused to believe it was that good.

Well, the demo convinced me otherwise - the game clearly deserves the praise just judging from the demo. I've added it to my wishlist. I just wish they'd picked a different name.

Phantasy Star IV, though, holds up well enough. Not quite as well as FF 6, closer to 4 or 5.

Yeah, I don't think think ryushe will enjoy Phantasy Star. If he didn't enjoy Final Fantasy I and Dragon Quest I, I assume character development is important for him and there isn't much of it in any of these titles.

but you're completely wrong on the bolded.

Yeah. I played the NES version of Dragon Quest I for the first time in 2010. It was my first DQ, I had no nostalgia for it and I freaking loved it.

Phantasy Star isn't for you.

Phantasy Star IV, though, holds up well enough. Not quite as well as FF 6, closer to 4 or 5.

I also think he would enjoy IV, I would easily recommend it to most RPG fans. It is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy IV, so the characters talk a lot, there are many events and the plot is way more complex and detailed. It's a beautiful, well-developed and engaging RPG, way more modern then previous entries in the series.

Well, I didn't state that as gospel but personally, I find it hard to enjoy early games in long running franchises because they are always so gameplay focused and are often times extremely difficult in how obscure they are with said gameplay.

Yeah, I don't think think ryushe will enjoy Phantasy Star. If he didn't enjoy Final Fantasy I and Dragon Quest I, I assume character development is important for him and there isn't much of it in any of these titles.
And you'd be completely correct. Character development/interactions are the most important thing for me where RPG's are concerned. It's why I do not like any Final Fantasy before IV.

Though I will say, I played DQI (The Super Famicom double pack version) for the first time last year and outside of a few really silly obscure things, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it..

I also finished DQII this year and absolutely dispised it, though. So, yeah.

Yeah. I played the NES version of Dragon Quest I for the first time in 2010. It was my first DQ, I had no nostalgia for it and I freaking loved it.
As stated above, same! I think that game having only one playable character is extremely unique where JRPGs are concerned and does wonders for it!

I also think he would enjoy IV, I would easily recommend it to most RPG fans. It is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy IV, so the characters talk a lot, there are many events and the plot is way more complex and detailed. See, Phantasy Star IV is the one I've always heard about (I've even played it years ago and really enjoyed it). It's why I asked my earlier question because I never quite heard any love for PSI in the past, so I was quite surprised by the love it got in this thread.

But speaking of RPG's, I bit the bullet and picked up Steven Universe: Save the Light yesterday and boy am I glad I did. Outside of some pretty long load times, the game looks and runs great. As for bugs and whatnot, I haven't experienced anything crazy but I did have a moment where I was playing the game docked and when I pulled out the Switch to see how the game looked undocked, the controls were unresponsive. Now, I don't want to say that was the games fault, since I've had that same thing happen with other games before, especially if the Pro Control is in use, but I just wanted to note that.

As for the game itself, it's the direct sequel to the fantastic Attack the Light and is Steven Universe's take on the Mario and Luigi games in that battles are turn based but you're constantly pressing the A button to attack harder/more times or to defend better. There's a pretty indepth skill tree and you even have team up attacks/fusions!

I'm only about an hour or two in, but the game seems great and is a step up from its previous title, which was already awesome. And as a HUGE SU fan, it's impossible to play this game without a huge grin on my face. Hell, they even have the same voice actors from the show!

I would say it holds up better among the other first in it's 8-bit class. Of course that depends upon how tolerant you are of first person dungeon crawl mechanics. I'm not personally a fan of fp dungeon crawls but greatly enjoyed PS1. Story/character wise the only 8bit rpg that really beat it is Ys 1-2.

I think what has helped PS1 ironically is unlike other 8 bit jrpgs, it's never received a localized upgraded version like all 3 ff, all 4 dq, and both ys games. This has lead to more people playing/finishing the original because they had to.

The Yooka Laylee update from Brawlout will come out on November 7

It will also fix almost everything I had problems with this game like :
- Stages don't need to be unlocked anymore
- Faster Loading times
- Second stick can be used to smash attack
- Just one currency
- Skins are unlocked by leveling up the main character and all are unlocked by lvl 5

Bummed at the wait on Phantasy Star, on the other hand they do have an entire Beastipedia and item library to translate(and manual) then all that has to be QA-d on the western side(which means a launch delay you wouldn't see in a non-rpg, or at least one without added out of game features), it's one thing when the game is just using the original translation it's another when you add at least another 100 thousand words of content that needs to be translated to the right context.
Least with my SNK 40th preorder cancelled I have this to look forwards too(have to clear up a bit more of my backlog, may get Valkyria Chonicle 1)

decided I'll pickup the Sega Genesis Collection in store when it releases so I can use it to kill time while I wait for smash

Valkyria Chronicles 1 is awesome and the price is right. I strongly recommend it, and I'm not even a big fan of tactical games.

And please share your thoughts on the Genesis Collection when you get it. Despite the technical issues, I'm still interested and might buy it if there are no extra issues on Switch.

I just warn on 2 things, I have a decent amount of tolerence, unless it's straight up broken, or has a major graphical hiccup as long as the games run well I'm happy, that and sound bugs don't bother me much, while I own original hardware, I tend to be listening to other stuff while I game on switch. That and hub doesn't truly matter. but we'll see how things stand in a month and I'll do the best I can to give honest thoughts

Also yeah there's a good chance I'll get VC, just want to try and beat the basics on MHOJ and Shining Resonance refrain first(Octopath happens if it happens), If I get through those 2 and we're still a week from PS, I'll grab it

Game of the Day

Outlast 2 is the sequel to the acclaimed survival horror game Outlast.

Set in the same universe as the first game, but with different characters and a different setting, Outlast 2 is a twisted new journey into the depths of the human mind and its dark secrets.

Outlast 2 introduces you to Sullivan Knoth and his followers, who left our wicked world behind to give birth to Temple Gate, a town, deep in the wilderness and hidden from civilization. Knoth and his flock are preparing for the tribulations of the end of times and you're right in the thick of it.

You are Blake Langermann, a cameraman working with your wife, Lynn. The two of you are investigative journalists willing to take risks and dig deep to uncover the stories no one else will dare touch.

You're following a trail of clues that started with the seemingly impossible murder of a pregnant woman known only as Jane Doe.

The investigation has lead you miles into the Arizona desert, to a darkness so deep that no one could shed light upon it, and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do.
