Pretty great, I'm going to give it some time before I think about a score or something. I would like to play through it again without a broken right stick.
2. Citizen Sleeper
This was pretty good, though not my favorite.
Currently making my way through Yakuza 0

1. Return to Monkey Island
A wonderful love letter to the series and a good final entry. I greatly appreciate the inclusion of a hint guide and post holiday brain meant I mare liberal use of it throughout. It took me a while to really get into the game, but I did enjoy myself in the end. The Monkey Island series remains one of the most important games in my life and I'm thankful for the team for letting me relive the glory days once more.

2. Star Ocean: First Departure
This game has been in my backlog let's say...10 years? A long time, at least. I first came across this game when I was a wee bab and playing a Japanese version on ZSNES. On and off over the years I've picked this game up and put it down. This year, after the most recent port, I was determined to actually finish the game. Worth it? Eh. I should not this is the psp version I played. The gameplay is fine and the story is sort of interesting. But it's very, very slow and honestly not a lot happens. None of the recruited characters that I picked up felt particularly interesting. The best aspect of this game was experimenting with the item creation and speciality features. I like figuring out mechanics in old games and this was no exception. Unfortunately, that's really the one highlight for me. There are better rpgs on the psp, and, despite its at the time advanced features, there are also better rpgs on the SNES. The developers themselves in the secret dev room in-game said the game was a massive pain to make and they weren't sure it was even good. Still, I'm very glad to have this game finally completed; it's been a long time coming.

3. Spider-man: The Heist DLC

Ooh boy, this was rough remembering how to play. Either I suck or this was hard. I'm putting my money on skill issue 😅 Story was fun, though! I like Felicia and she was good here. Peter is pretty naive here but I'm fine with that. This was fun. Let's see where the rest goes.

4. Spider-Man: Turf Wars DLC
Yuri finally gets some spotlight but her time to shine is a double-edged sword. This is, unfortunately, a lot more dour than The Heist with not a lot to liven it up. Screwball has well and truly warn out her welcome and hideouts just feel like more of the same. There's very little in-person interaction between Yuri and Parker and I feel like that definitely hinders this dlc. The spiderbot missions were OK, though, and I do appreciate how far this was willing to go with its content and themes.

5. Chained Echoes
Might be my favourite rpg since DQ11. It feels like it's been so long since an rpg really surprised me. And it's so funny that it's come from what looks from the outside like nostalgia bait. And, granted, there is a lot of Pointing Leo Dicaprio moments to be had. At the same time, though, CE feels like a breath of fresh air. No levels, auto healing after battle, no random battles, 2 unique battle systems and genuinely difficult and engaging combat. Not to mention a story that goes unexpected and surprisingly mature places. CE goes out of its way to be different, so it's no wonder that this game has been a bit divisive. Myself, as I've said, I couldn't be happier with what I got. Honestly for the first time since DQ11 I loved an rpg from beginning to end. It's been so long I almost forgot why I love this genre. I'm definitely looking forward to the likely sequel.

6. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line
I have to say I'm a little disappointed. The physical version of this game is the same as the regular release and it's missing some really popular tracks. The single player segment is fine, I guess. Gameplay has been adapted to buttons only and it's honestly much harder. There's a bug in basically everyone's game where your input is severely delayed. And there's like 32 tracks for ffxiv and only 7 for type-0. This version really feels half-baked.

That said, it's Theatrhythm so I'm gonna love it regardless. And I'll grumble about it but I absolutely know I will fork over the money for the deluxe expansion.

7. FFXIV: Heavensward
I split playing this over about 2 years give or take. I remember enjoying the first half of this pretty well, then I stopped when anxiety started wrecking my life. That was maybe 2021 when I stopped and we cut to April this year and I've finally finished the expansion.

Firstly I love the settings and characters. Estinien is a massive edgelord and Ysale is great. Alphinaud really becomes fantastic in this. He gets to act his age and grow quite a lot too. Speaking of edgelords, I picked up the Dark Knight role in this expansion and I'm really enjoying it.

The dungeons were all fairly enjoyable and I've found I've really eased into the role of tank with far less anxiety this time around.

I didn't like some story beats towards the end but this was otherwise very enjoyable, moreso than ARR. See you in another 2 years, FFXIV.

8. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
I dropped my entire backlog for this game. It was worth every second. The Zelda team did the impossible and made a botw sequel better in every single way. This game is perfect and there will be nothing that can beat it for me this year.

9. Spider-Man: Silver Lining DLC
A nice way to close out the game. Silver Sable is cool and I'm glad we got to see more of her. I skipped all of Screwball's challenges because lol no. Bases missions were meh but the clue hunt was the real fun twist in this dlc. Can't wait to see more of Yuri, she's great. Hammerhead is a meh villain, this dlc is entirely carried by SIlver Sable and Spidey banter and it's honestly worth it for that.

10.YEAH! YOU WANT "THOSE GAMES," RIGHT? SO HERE YOU GO! NOW, LET'S SEE YOU CLEAR THEM!
My brain is absolutely throbbing with IQ now.

header.jpg

11. Islets
A fun, little metroidvania. Not a lot of depth to the mechanics but it's fairly solid, not too difficult and well paced. It's also very pretty too look at. Music is meh, story is pretty non-existent but there's some novel stuff with the airship sections. I enjoyed this enough to 100% it.

header.jpg

12. When the Past Was Around
Hmm... I feel like I've played this game many times before. Talented artist down on their luck, beautiful dead/ missing/ no longer in their life partner, rekindling their passion through happy memories. The art is gorgeous, the music is nice enough and the puzzles are tricky. Owl boyfriend is a massive plus, ngl. But it all feels very familiar.

header.jpg

13. Planet of Lana
Prefect from start to finish. Gorgeous art, beautiful music and some sweet, sweet puzzle platforming. It feels in the same spirit as Journey, Ico, The Last Guardian and Inside. Plus you can pet the CatFerret. It's perfect.

header.jpg

14. Subsurface Circular
I think I enjoyed the journey more than the destination here. The big decision at the end didn't really feel earned. It was a big leap from 'damn lost my job' to 'maybe we should help overthrow the government?' I did enjoy the writing, though. Felt like reading a good book.

header.jpg

15. Eastward
I didn't understand a thing. But this game is very pretty, has nice music, decent combat and a cute little robot boy named Daniel and I love him.

images

16. Empty.
Short puzzle game. Decently distracted me and worked my brain.

header.jpg

17. Spider-Man: Miles Morales
It took me a while to warm to this story since I'm more familiar with Parker than Morales. This turned out to be very fun, though, just like its predecessor. Gameplay wise, venom attacks are very fun and stealth felt like a breeze this game with camouflage. Story wise, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Got emotional at the end there. I'm a massive sucker for stories about family. Now I'm fully set for Spidey 2 in a couple of weeks! Hooray!

header.jpg

18. 8-Bit Adventures 2
Phew! It took me a while but i finally got around to completing this after I started it at the beginning of the year. 100% completion too! Just a lovely game, I really have no complaints worth mentioning. It's full of heart, it's very sweet and it's so a huge love letter to old rpgs.

header.jpg

19. A Guidebook of Babel
Played this whilst I was sick with a cold and I enjoyed my time with it. It's a bit of a Moon-lite style game. You play through a snippet of day and can go back and rewrite parts of it to ensure a butterfly effect on other parts of the day.

Basically the story is a cruise ship has sunk and all members on board have died. Their souls are scooped out of the water by the inhabitants of the ship named Babel. These "not-humans" are never given a name but their job is to help people reincarnate in exchange for harvesting their memories. Their memories are needed in the processes that run the ship. You play 4 characters timelines: Braith, a carnie that's trying to hide from his daughter that she's died, Javert, a not-human swimmer (read security), Lanci a not-human head chef and another character that appears later.

It's really very pretty, and the game isn't too difficult since there's a note system that basically spells out the puzzle solutions for you. The problem lies in its translation. This game is just really badly transcribed from Chinese. There's a few grammatical errors and spelling mistakes but it's just so poorly worded sometimes that I failed to understand much of the story beyond the main storyline. There's a lot of lore in this game that just doesn't make any sense in English, which is a shame because a huge amount of effort otherwise has been put into this game. There's so much text in this game from character backstories, maps, item and location descriptions and story notes and all of it is beautifully set out in a book format. It's such a shame that they didn't spend more time on translation efforts.

20. Star Battle Puzzle
Completed Hard mode. It's perfect. I was looking for something to play after Tents And Trees was wasn't really engaging me anymore. This is exactly what I was looking for. Ads aren't intrusive and it works my brain real good. I love it.

Marvels-Spider-Man-2-1.jpg

21. Spider-Man 2
It's perfect. I cried for the entire playthrough.

22. Hi-Fi Rush
An enjoyable game to pass time with. Very reminiscent of 2000s cartoons, there's a lot of heart in this game. The combat was fun and the characters were great. My favourite was CNNM. All the music was great but I feel there weren't enough licenced tracks and... hmm, that weren't loud enough? A lot of music felt like it was reduced to background noise as I played. Idk I guess I wanted a bit more oomph. It was fun but not particularly memorable for me.

23. Hylics
An absolute fever dream of a game that, despite its short play time, overstays its welcome a little.

header.jpg

24. Zwei: An Arges Adventure
A comedy action rpg to finish my year. This was a blast. Terrible controls and some truly galaxy-brain mechanics weren't enough to stop me from enjoying this very silly game. It's funny, gorgeous and has an incredible soundtrack. And I found the grind fun after a while. I focused on main story only, so I missed a lot of extra dungeon content. I don't think I'll go back for the extra hard optional bosses but I like that there's more to do.

#1 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Xbox - 14 hours - 5.5
Disappointing. The open world is overwhelming and not very fun to explore. Being so accurate to the movie locations is impressive but doesn't make for good map design. The levels themselves are a bit boring too although they do get better. The prequels levels give a bad first impression

#2 Portal (Replay) - PC - 2 hours - 8.5
Still as good as ever, such a tight, focused game that holds up magnificently, even when you remember a lot of the solutions

#3 Wintermoor Tactics Club - PC - 9 hours - 7.5
Cute tactics game, it's a little simpler than I expected, there's not really any leveling up or anything and its a bit on the easy side but the battles are enjoyable and so is the story

#4 High on Life - Xbox - 10 hours - 6.5
Oh geez, oh man, th-this game isn't that bad, you know? But it's like n-not that good like either? Oh geez

#5 Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - Xbox - 10 hours - 8.0
One I had as a kid but never finished, I had a blast playing this, the lightsaber is fun to use along with the force powers, couldn't resist being evil when they offer you force lightning. first person shooting is fun too, I do wish the academy itself was more flehsed out, its not really a factor in the game

BOerd0f.jpg

#6 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - 4 hours - PS2 - 5.5
Basically the Lord of The Rings PS2 game with a Star Wars skin, but it doesn't play nearly as well. There's a lot of combos and stuff you can do but it feels very clunky and unresponsive. Definitley gets more fun in the second half when you're upgraded a bit but still pretty average

#7 Hi-Fi RUSH - Xbox - 23 hours - 9.0
What a great surprise out of nowhere this was, I like rhythm games and love character action so it's already a great fit for me and they nailed the execution.
The gameplay is really smooth and responsive, the cutscenes are fun and look great and it's one of those games that gets better as it goes on.
The last stretch of levels and boss fights are so good.

#8 Avatar: The Last Airbender - PS2 - 6 hours - 5.0
I'm watching the show for the first time so I did the completely unneccesary thing of playing the tie-in game that is probably not canon.
Basic action game with some light rpg mechanics, at first I thought it was alright, but there's so much running around huge maps fighting endless enemies it does become a bit of a slog. I don't know why I finished it tbh

#9 Undertale - Xbox - 4 hours - 7.5
Undertale is a neat game that is well written and has great music, I wouldn't say I loved it but I get why some people do. It was leaving game pass so I didn't have time to do the other playthroughs but I looked them up, maybe I didn't get the full undertale experience this way, but I'm ok with that

#10 Cyberpunk 2077 - Xbox - 45 hours - 8.5
I really loved being in Night City, it's a pretty incredible world that they crafted. The gameplay is good too, though I felt it could have been even better if it went a little more in on the "deus-exness" when it comes to mission design. I was surprised at how short the story is, there is a lot of side content which is where a lot of the good stuff is anyway. Some really good characters and voice acting.

#11 Shadow Warrior 3 - Xbox - 4:30 hours - 6.5
Pretty hectic and challenging, but in a fun way. Very short, bit of a knock-off doom eternal, but that's okay. Doesn't really make a good first impression but gets better and I was ok with the short run time. Fine for a little Game Pass game.

#12 Resident Evil 4 (2005) (Replay) - PC - 11 hours - 9.5
It's amazing how nearly every encounter in RE4 is memorable in some way and also just a blast to play. The devs really did nail the assignment (ada). Played with the HD texture pack which just looks incredible.

#13 Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Xbox - 24 hours - 7.0
This was okay, but a bit mid compared to Team Ninja's other efforts. Difficulty is a bit all over the place, and the combat a little simple, there's pretty much one tactic in the parry so you do that the whole game. Decent enough time, just could be better.

#14 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter - Xbox - 5 hours - 7.5
A little rough around the edges but I liked the tactical, slower paced gameplay. The squad commands are super simple, like move or shoot are the options, which feels like the system was simplfied for consoles maybe.

#15 Goldeneye 007 (Replay) - Xbox - 5 hours - 7.0
Holds up as a fun enough time but a little unremarkable nowawdays. The second half of the game is a bit of a dip in quality. I think Perfect Dark was a pretty big improvement

eNfWFVK.jpeg

#16 Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition - Xbox - 40 hours - 7.5
Overall had a good time playing this, I liked the tactical gameplay of the combat and exploring the various maps. It's very wordy and exposition dumpy,
which can be a little intimidating or even boring if you're not in the mood for it.
The main story is fairly interesting but it takes a lot of time to get to get good stuff. Really the most interesting stuff is right at the end.

#17 Persona 3: FES - PS2 - 65 hours - 7.0
This took a while to get through, but not because I didn't like it. It's just rather long and the "gameplay loop" is really quite repetitive
The main dungeon Tartarus is..not great, this is where emulator speed up came in clutch. I played with the party control mod.
There's some cringe anime stuff that had me eye rolling a bit, some outdated things here and there. like having to romance every girl just to further
the social link, no reason there couldn't be platonic social links with them too.
Kinda run out of things to do later in the game so end up just winding down the calender, this is where you start to feel the length of the game. Great soundtrack.

#18 Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy - Xbox - 12 hours - 7.5
Pretty neat Zelda clone, really strong art direction, it looks great even today. There is a strong stench of cut content, last few hours feel very rushed.
I liked the puzzles, not so much the combat.

#19 Pizza Tower - PC - 6 hours - 8.5
This feels really great to play, levels have a really good flow to them. Perfectly realised art style and animation. It constantly introduces new mechanics, there's lot of creativity in the level design. And the music is really great.

#20 Diablo II Ressurected - Xbox - 40 hours - 7.5
Despite some gripes I have, diablo 2 is really addictive. Killing and looting is fun, who knew? My biggest gripe is probably the bosses,
they are extremely difficult for most builds and the accepted tactic is to just wittle them down by teleporting in and out to restock potions.
The game is a little harsh in general when it comes to builds, you can easily fuck yourself over without prior research, veterans might like it but for new players, it can be offputting. Wouldn't have minded some rebalancing for the remaster. Still, fun and addictive, even if I did have to restart because my first character sucked

#21 Amnesia: Rebirth - Xbox - 7 hours - 6.0
This was okay but it was treading into walking sim territory a bit much for me. Story was alright enough to keep going but Amnesia still peaked with the first game

#22 Tinykin - Xbox - 5 hours - 7.5
Very cute 3D platformer that reminds me of the Toy Story 2 game, which is always a good thing

#23 Battlefield 1 - Xbox - 14 hours - 8.0
Campaign was just ok, some nice graphics but kinda forgettable. Really enjoyed what I played of the multiplayer though, and it's still pretty active.

#24 Superliminal - Xbox - 2:30 hours - 6.0
Sometimes the mechanics were a bit hard to grasp, so I knew what to do but executing it was a bit fiddly. It was okay, but probably won't remember it

#25 Mario + Rabbids: Donkey Kong Adventure - Switch - 5 hours - 7.5
DK is really fun to play as, throwing enemies and swinging across vines adds a lot to the battles. Battles are pretty varied in objectives, it was a little easy though

#26 Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - SNES - 15 hours - 8.0

Simple but charming RPG, I enjoyed the writing and while the gameplay is nothing out of this world, it's well paced and fun for it's shortish run time

#27 Iron Brigade - Xbox - 10 hours - 8.0

Cool mix of tower defence and 3rd person shooter, a lot of replayability, unlocking new weapons and turrets is pretty addictive.

#28 Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge - Xbox - 12 hours - 5.0
This game makes a horrible first impression, and for some reason it's obsessed with firing rocket launchers at you. And helicopters. There's a lot of fucking annoying enemies.
During the more "normal" combat encounters, it can be pretty fun and challenging, but the good stuff is surrounded by a layer of turd
Level design is pretty poor and the bosses are super annoying.

#29 Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 - GB - 2:30 hours - 7.0
Played this with a lovely colour patch which looked great. I like the power ups and the level design and the graphics are pretty great for the GB. Interesting twist on the gameplay when they could have easily made a standard platformer just with Wario instead of Mario

#30 Wario Land II - GBC - 5 hours - 7.5
This one was more puzzley but with plenty of platforming too. Longer and more challenging than the first game with some very difficult to find secrets. There's a big ol post game with a bunch of secret levels and hidden exits but I was getting a little burnt out by that point

#31 Battlefield: Hardline - Xbox - 7 - 8.0
Felt a bit yucky playing Cop: The Game at first but what can I say, it's actually a very well crafted campaign. There's some nice openess to some of the levels, and you're rewarded for playing stealth and non lethally, which I liked.
The story is like a dumb movie and entertaining for what it is

#32 The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD - Switch - 28 hours - 8.0

I liked the overworld in this game quite a lot, at least the areas on the ground. The sky areas feel pretty underbaked and could have used some more islands to explore. Dungeons were excellent too. The controls take some getting used to but eventually feels ok.
Gets very backtracky in the 2nd half, and despite its length, feels kinda small because of all the times you revisit old areas

#33 Far Cry 5 - Xbox - 27 hours - 8.0

FC5 looks stunning at times, I think it got a next gen upgrade but yeah I was surprised at how good it looked. Other than that it's a Far Cry game, great podcast game, lots of cool missions and set pieces as well as emergent gameplay where shit just happens. Like the music and general vibe. Story is wack but idc about that

#34 Mortal Kombat 9 - PC - 8 hours - 8.0
First of all, the female character designs in this game are so embarrasing lol. The story is so dumb but I was very entertained, honestly I was getting through the fights just to get to the next cutscene.
I'm really bad at fighting games but I tried to learn a couple of combos for whoever I was playing as, and felt myself improving. Final boss is some BS tho as well as some of those 2v1 fights

#35 Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood - PC - 6:30 hours - 7.5
The default FOV in this game was 46. Fourty six!! Anyway, after fixing that, I had a pretty good time. Been a while since I played the first game but it seems like an improvement from that one

#36 Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance - PS2 - 2 hours - 5.0
I thought the Konquest mode was going to be like a story mode of sorts, but it's just tutorials for each character, so that was a bit dissapointing. did my boys Scorpions missions then went to Arcade mode. The fighting seems a little more complicated in this one, with the different stances and 3d movement and some of the combos seemed a bit harder to pull off.
Had a pretty hard time with it, felt like some major input reading was going on, last few fights were soem heavy bullshit. Fucking Moloch or whatever his name is

#37 Mortal Kombat: Deception - PS2 - 6 hours - 5.5
This time the Konquest mode is expanded into a more of a story mode, but it's not very good. The same tutorial fights remain except inbetween them you run around ugly overworlds, do a few fetch quests and listen to bad voice acting. There are story fights too at least.
Did arcade mode too, could only beat the last guy with save states, MK games have such bullshit bosses.

#38 Planet of Lana - Xbox - 4:30 hours - 8.0
Cinematic platformers aren't usually my jam but I play so few of them I don't mind giving a new one a go, and I enjoyed this one a lot. The art and music are really beautiful, the puzzles were easy to understand and enjoyable to solve and the pacing is tight.

#39 Diablo IV - Xbox - 70 hours - 8.0
While it didn't quite live up to my hype, I still had a blast going through the campaign of D4. The game feels really good to play and there's so much production value. I think the post game stuff was what let me down a bit as the grind just didn't feel that fun

#40 Jade Empire - Xbox - 15 hours - 7.5

Very light on the RPG elements, and the combat is a bit clunky but the Bioware forumla works. I like the story and the companions enough, although they aren't Bioware's best.

#41 Ape Escape - PS1 - 6 hours - 7.0
Controls take some getting used to but theres some good level design and little puzzles to catching the monkeys. Pretty fun and I probably would have loved it as a kid

#42 Cassette Beasts - Xbox - 25 hours - 8.5
This was a very nice surprise and probably the best Pokemon clone I've played. Some cool monster designs, battle system is good and the soundtrack slaps

#43 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Switch - 128 hours - 9.0

I loved revisiting Hyrule, it probably helps that I haven't touched BOTW since release, so a lot of it still felt pretty fresh to me. And the new stuff is awesome, all the abilities and the stuff you can build is just great

#44 Quake 2 - Xbox - 4 hours - 7.5
I didn't really like Quake 2 the first time I tried in on PC, and while I still think Quake 1 is quite a bit better, the remaster did make me appreciate it a bit. The compass telling you where to go if you get lost is a god send (quake 1 didn't need that cus the level design is better :) )

#45 A Plague Tale: Requiem - Xbox - 15 hours - 7.0
A little dissapointing? Definitley not bad but there's a lot of trial and error which could get frustrating, and the pacing is worse than the first game

#46 Lies of P - Xbox - 23 hours - 8.5
This game blew my socks off compared to how I thought it was going to turn out. Definitely the best Souls clone I've played. They really nailed the combat and level design. Was challenging but never felt BS

#47 El Paso, Elsewhere - PC - 7 hours - 6.5
I can easily image a version of this game which is great rather than just ok. I really like the main VO and the soundtrack but the gameplay is a little dissapointing. Having 90% of the enemies be melee just doesn't work when you're going for Max Payne gameplay. There is very little need to use any of the movement or diving so a lot of the time I just stood still and killed from a distance with no threat

#48 Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Switch - 14 hours - 9.0
Loved it, such an improvement over the NSMB games. So much creativity in the levels, the graphics and animations are amazing and I had a smile on my face the whole time (apart from the secret last level)

#49 Wolfenstein II - The New Colossus - Xbox - 8 hours - 7.0
Tone is all over the place, and gameplay isn't really improved from the first game which is a little bit of a shame,
And yet, the story is a enjoyable watch and shooting nazis is fun

#50 Alice: Madness Returns - Xbox - 13 hours - 7.0

This one has better gameplay that the original but felt a little less original and interesting. It goes on longer than it should but I had a decent time

#51 Sacred 3 - PC - 8 hours - 6.0
Mindless hack n slash, dissapointing direction they went in after Sacred 2 but it's not the worst thing ever. Just fairly repetitive. Turned the audio off because the voices were so grating and listened to podcasts

#52 Yakuza 5 Remastered - Xbox - 43 hours - 8.0
Damn this is a chunky game. I don't think anyone on the dev team ever heard the word No, there's like a million different styles of gameplay and mini games.
Good thing all the sidequests were actually fun as hell, the taxi driving, hunting, dancing, I liked all of it! The main story gets kinda confusing at the end but overall this was one of my most liked Yakuza games so far

#53 The Legend of Korra - PS4 - 3 hours - 5.5
The combat, while basic by Platinum standards, is still quite fun especially once you get all your avatar powers, but the game is so short that once you do there's like an hour left to enjoy it. Doesn't offer much else outside the combat, the levels are pretty linear and ugly and even for a fan of the show, the story is pretty worthless. The moments where it does feel like Bayonetta-lite are there, but it's not really enough

#54 Lost Planet 2 - Xbox - 7 hours - 7.0
Improvement over the original, more variety in the locations and missions. Downside is the game and boss fights are clearly designed for co-op, the AI bots don't really cut it

#55 Jusant - Xbox - 4 hours - 7.5
Climbing mechanics are quite clever and enjoyable, the game never really challenges you as much as it could have with them though. Didn't really pay attention to the notes left scattered around so while I enjoyed it, I did kinda forget a lot about it as soon as I was done

Damn, I skimmed the past victors set and wondered why I wasn't there... then realised the last (and only) time I managed this was in 2016 on the old site.

In 2022 I beat / played like less than 10 games total I think so I want to try and get back into a variety of experiences. Officially signing up.

The last time i came close to 52 games is a few years back. Think i will try again this year. I would already be very happy If i could just double the number of games i beat compared to last year.

I can't help but post every year. Reserving this spot. Did it once, so like. I know I caaaaan, but also I doubt I will. BUT HEY. Maybe this will be the year I truly stick with my own journaling -and- make progress. Got antidepressants late last year, and it has done wonders for my gaming alongside the actual reasoning for them lol.

Hope to at least hit 30 this year. Only got 20 last year. And would like to get at least one finished this week, as I got the rhythm game itch recently and wanna run through a few game's tracklists.

First timer, let's do this!

Currently a fair way through steel rising, just relearning my muscle memory after putting it down for a couple months.

1. Path of Exile: The Forbidden Sanctum - PC - ★★★★★

This was my favourite league to date where I also played on and reached the furthest end game content I have so far and just overall had a great time. Played Righteous Fire and it was very comfortable, up there with Cyclone and also Lightning Conduit (which I played last league) for my favourite builds.

2. Genshin Impact: Inazuma - PC - ★★★★

Got around to completing the Inazuma section of the map and questline, overall enjoyable - good cast of characters in this section. I'm still playing and have now ventured into the chasm area while also focusing on levelling up a couple of teams for abyss with some artifacts now that I've gone past AR45. Currently the two comps are; Eula, Raiden, Lisa and Diona | Keqing, Fischl, Xingqiu and Bennett.

3. Genshin Impact: Chasm - PC - ★★★★

The lack of voice acting aside, I really enjoyed this quest chain and area exploration - nice quest update with Dainsleif too. Account wise I got lucky pulling Yelan early including winning the 50/50.

4. Path of Exile: Crucible - PC - ★★★

I didn't put nearly as much time in as the previous league, maybe partly because of how much I played Forbidden Sanctum and also partly due to not particularly enjoying the league mechanic or having a regular need to use it.

5. Honkai Star Rail: Launch Content - iPad - ★★★★★

The easier auto-battling for the content in Genshin I don't enjoy so much with character and weapon farming. Great game to play on the iPad and I found that I passively completed all the content over the time since launch. Seele, Silver Wolf 50/50s won and Kafka next up. Gepard from the welcome banner and Welt from standard banner (although not levelled).

6. League of Legends: Split 1 2023 - PC - ★★★

Continuing my silver ways. Diana being weak made me sad.

7. Genshin Impact: Sumeru - PC - ★★★★★

Caught up on the main storyline for the first time ever ahead of Fontaine's launch and I really Enjoyed Sumeru's storyline. Character wise I picked up Nahida since completing the chasm and my second team is Keqing, Fischl, Nahida and Yelan.

8. Path of Exile: Trial of the Ancestors - PC - ★★★★★

Much more enjoyable league after Crucible. Played a totem build and enjoyed sanctum and the new league mechanic in my time playing.

9. Persona 5 Royal - PC - ★★★★★

My first persona, amazing game.

10. League of Legends: Split 2 2023 - PC - ★★★★

Gold for the first time!

---

I'm wrapped up for the year won't be adding to my total; a lot of updates on existing games completed rather than standalone games although I did start but not finish a lot of games so expecting/hoping 2024 to be an improvement.

Best game of 2023 I played was by far and away Persona 5 Royal which was a delight, while it was also a great year for Path of Exile leagues (enjoying Affliction right now too!)

Here we go again

80FWM22.jpg

Game 1 - World of Warcraft Dragonflight
Platform - PC
Time: Ongoing
Rating: 5/5

Absolutely fantastic expansion, at least so far during the launch patch, fixing every mistake shadowlands made, bringing back spec trees making classes feel better than better (in general at least), great zones, great dungeons, very alt friendly and with tons of content even for solo players, just everything you want from a wow expansion, now they just need to hit a fast patch cadence (so far so good on that front also with 10.0.5 coming out this week!).

header.jpg

Game 2 - Ender Lillies Quietus of the Knights
Platform - Switch
Time: 16 hours
Rating: 4.5/5

Suberb metroidvania with some of the best 2d art around and a really big world and campaign to explore and fight through. The combat is a bit simple, but I really like the spirit system for your attacks, and since I don't usually rate combat overly high in these games (I mean, as long as it gets the job done, I value exploration, level design and abilities more), the rest really resonated with me. Various different endings, lots of secrets to find, I loved it and would easily recommend it to fans of the genre.

Game 3 - Souldiers
Platform - Switch
Time: 25 hours
Rating: 2/5 (specifically for the Switch port)
Rating: 4/5 (otherwise, if it works)

Yeah, there's a reason I'm doing double scores here. As a game, this is a really well made metroidvania, one where the devs clearly had more ambitions then they probably should have, as the game is way too long and ultimately feels quite bloated (I guess they were going for that Hollow Knight epic length), but the fantastic sprite art and great level design, coupled with 3 classes to choose and a ton of weapons and sidequests to do make this, as a game, very good for it's genre. If it works on your desired system. Unfortunately, the Switch version not only runs terribly (and im not just talking about it being 30fps vs 60fps), but it has game breaking bugs and crashes, specifically late game (one of the end game dungeons was so bad I had to resort to teleporting to the main city every time I wanted to save, because it kept crashing if I saved in the end game zone I was in), so I can't in good conscience recommend this particular version to anyone, because even after a lot of patches, it's still busted. It's a huge bummer because, again, the game itself feels like a labour of love.

Game 4 - Wo Long Fallen Dynasty
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: 30 hours
Rating: 4/5

Was ready to score it lower but it really gre on me as I played more, and level design started getting much better in the second half. A mix of Nioh and Sekiro, that while never gets as good as the Nioh games, it does have satisfying gameplay and it scratched the "souls" itch nicely. It is very reminiscent of Nioh, it pretty much uses the same mission structure (down to side missions reusing levels with different paths) and the gameplay is similar albeit with much more focus on the Sekiro-style parry system. It doesn't overstay it's welcome (I did every side mission and it still only took me about 30 hours) and it's actually much easier than the usual Souls-like once you get the hang of the parry system and level up / upgrade your gear, so overall I had a great time. Still wish it was Nioh 3 instead tho. Amazing gamepass pickup btw.

Game 5 - Salt and Sanctuary
Platform - Switch
Time: 21 hours
Rating: 5/5

Replay on Switch this time (flawless port btw, unlike SOME OTHER METROIDVANIAS IN THIS LIST), and it's still absolutely fantastic. The closest we will probably ever get to a 2d Dark Souls, combat feels meaty, game world is huge and full of bosses, it looks gorgeous (still funny to me how people shat on it just because of the funny NPC faces when literally everything else looks so good), and is just overall one of the best in the genre you will play (and one of the hardest too mind you).

Game 6 - Last Epoch (early access)
Platform - PC
Time: 20 hours
Rating: 4/5

Hadn't played this one in a couple of years, but Diablo 4 beta got me hungry for more ARPG action so decided to jump back in to see how it was shaping up now that it's on patch 0.9, and it's still looking like it would be a very good alternative to the big ones loike Diablo and PoE. Looks much better than last time I tried, and the gameplay is still very good, with some of the best skill trees around. I still think only allowing for 5 skills (in a genre that has standarized 6 skills, which in itself is already low in my opinion) is a fundamental flaw in game design, but it is what it is I guess. Played a new character up to level 58 or so, seems like the campaign is still missing the final chapters but what's there is great (and long damn). Looking forward to the final release of this one (which is probably not so soon since it's still missing some core features like some classes masteries).

Game 7 - Hi Fi Rush
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: 12 hours
Rating: 4.5/5

How the hell did this shadowdrop out of nowhere? Absolutely fantastic mix of rhytmn game and devil may cry style character action, gorgeous cel shaded visuals, amazing soundtrack, just an absolute joy to play through. This is a triple A quality title (exclusive no less) with no fanfare, and at a budget price, it's baffling. Speaking of budget, the smaller budget can be felt here and there (especially later in the game, hell they even do a meta joke about it) which made me not go the full 5/5 as I felt it was a bit rushed towards the end, but it's still an absolute must play for pretty much anyone in my opinion.

Game 8 - Hoa
Platform - Switch
Time: 3 hours
Rating: 2.5/5

Gorgeous 2d puzzle platformer in the same vein of other "combatless" games like Gris or Journey and Abzu, although not as good as any of those, it's still worth to play if you are a fan of the genre. Like I said, it's absolutely gorgeous, and the gameplay is good enough for how short it is (even if the last level gets a little too mind-bendy for it's own good), but at the same time most of the levels are very same-y looking, and it never capitalizes on the abilities you get throughout.

Game 9 - Quest Hunter
Platform - Switch
Time: 15 hours
Rating: 3/5

I'll preface that for better or worse, this is clearly a mobile game (at least originally), and you can tell. If you can get past the obvious limitations, it's actually a decent action rpg with lots of content, decent puzzles, lots of loot and skills to unlock, it pretty much tics all the boxes and I enjoyed my time with it. I also played the DLC but the last boss was such a damage sponge that I couldn't be arsed finishing it, so im not gonna list it as I was initially going to.

Game 10 - Imp of the Sun
Platform - Switch
Time: 5 hours
Rating: 2.5/5

Another metroidvania, this one is just ok tho. Great 2d art but the gameplay feels super loose, and it's quite hard early on until you start gettting some upgrades. When it opens up mechanically there's some fun to be had, but it's super short at around 4 to 5 hours, and unless you are into collectibles, there's not even much reason to treat it as a "metroidvania" as you barely do any backtracking. For super fans of the genre only, and only if you find it cheap.

Game 11 - Ghostwire Tokyo
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: 28 hours
Rating: 4/5

Wasn't sure what to expect going in as I didn't pay much attention when it came out initially, but I sure wasn't expecting Far Cry with ghosts. But you know what, that's what I got and I ended up really enjoying it. I thought it looked good, had some nice enemy variety and some really satisfying gameplay with the different elemental powers. But, it follows the Far Cry formula to a T for better or worse, so if you don't like a big map full of icons to clear, this probably isn't for you. I don't mind that style of gameplay loop and hadn't played one in a while so it really clicked with me. Bonus points for the spirits you have to collect to level up reminding me of the Crackdown orbs, right down to the fact you need to fly around to get a lot of them.

Game 12 - Vernal Edge
Platform - Switch
Time: 10 hours
Rating: 4/5

Another great metroidvania that stands out in a sea of similar games with it's unique take on combat and art style. Combat takes a bit to get used to, especially with the weird healing mechanic (I went through half the game not healing because I didnt understand it until I googled it), and same can be said for the various traversal abilities you aquire (again, everything in this game is unique for better or worse and can take a bit to get used to) but for my money, it all comes together nicely. Perfect length and some really good level design, but it's also brutally difficult at times, so beware if that is not your jam. It's not top tier in the genre, but it's upper tier for sure, and very much worth playing for fans of these games.

Game 13 - Bayonetta
Platform - Switch
Time: 11 hours
Rating: 4.5/5

Another replay, this time to be ready for Bayo 3, and it's still as crazy and awesome as ever. Well, maybe not AS awesome, I actually have some nitpicks with it this time around that never really bothered me before, like the weird random still-image cutscenes, or the fact that the game is very... brown and gold (much like a lot of the 360/ps3 era games). The last few levels also are a bit frustrating, but then it goes back to being awesome with some truly ridiculous last couple of bosses / sequences. I'll save the 5/5 for the sequel which I liked more, but it's still a classic tho (well, as long as you can overlook the ridiculous sexualization, but I'm not going to go there here).

header.jpg

Game 14 - Dorfromantik
Platform - Switch
Time: Ongoing
Rating: 4/5

Super chill and deceptively hard mix of puzzle game and city builder, Dorfromantik doesn't have much going for it, but what it does it executes perfectly. Use your tiles to make bigger and bigger landscapes and get the highest score you can, that's about it. But it's super fun and addictive, and nail the "just one more go" aspect perfectly.

Game 15 - Bayonetta 2
Platform - Switch
Time: 9 hours
Rating: 4.5/5

Fantastic sequel that looks much better than the first game (one of the best looking games on the Switch especially in a oled portable, so wtf happened with 3? a story for another time I guess), and still has some fantastic set pieces and bosses, but I actually didn't resonate with it as much on this replay, as I felt the second part of the game isn't as strong (hell the game peaks in the first level to be honest) and the story is a time travel mess. Still awesome tho, and im really curious to finally play 3 now.

Game 16 - The Last Case of Benedict Fox
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: 14 hours
Rating: 3/5

Boy what a bummer this was. On one hand, the visuals and art design are absolutely fantastic, and it has some of the best puzzle design in most of the metroidvanias I've played (it's very akin to Resident Evil style puzzles in fact), but on the other hand, it's also one of the worst playing metroidvanias I've ever played, with super floaty gameplay and horrible combat, so I'm super torn on this one. I guess it depends on what you value more out of these games, if it's the gameplay stay away for sure, if it's the puzzle's and exploration, there is great stuff hidden underneath the terrible gameplay here.

Game 17 - Picross S4
Platform - Switch
Time: 30 hours
Rating: 4/5

Another game in the S series, same quality you expect from the Jupiter picross games. Not much to say really, there's no new puzzle types (unlike 3 which introduced the color puzzles), just another great collection of picross. I wish there was more color puzzles, and the extra puzzles you get from owning the previous games are a bit too big to play portable (the 40X30 grid becomes tiny portable) but thats just a tiny nitpick. If you like this series, you know exactly what to expect.

Game 18 - Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon
Platform - Switch
Time: 20 hours
Rating: 4/5

What a wonderful surprise this was, proving that Platinum isn't a one trick pony and can venture into completely different genres and still excel at it. Absolutely gorgeous and with a unique gameplay hook where you control Cereza and her Demon at the same time, this was a bundle of joy from start to end. It's a bit of a slow starter, but once you start picking up the different elemental powers both for traversal and puzzles, but also combat, it quickly grabs you and doesn't let go until the end. It's a little repetitious and way too easy (until the last boss which was actually kinda tough) but I had a blast and really liked how different it was from the other Bayonetta games.

Game #19 - Remnant II
Platform - XBOX Series X
Time: 40 hours
Rating: 4/5

Great sequel to the surprisingly souls-like shooter from 2019, it improves on everything the first game did, with better combat, better locations and more classes. Just a ton of fun to play once you find a weapon that suits you and your class, the zones are giant and I was enjoying it so much I even replayed the zones to get the alternative versions.

header.jpg

Game #20 - Guild Wars 2
Platform - PC
Time: 90 hours
Rating: 4/5

Finally decided to play this "for real" after dabbling in and out for years, and I'm glad I did. While not to the same degree as Final Fantasy 14, you can play this completely solo just for the story alone (much more than something like World of Warcraft for example) which I did, completing the vanilla story and all it's related instanced content which I actually enjoyed, although there was better (and worse) to come later one. Still looks great to this day, and the gameplay is still super fun (if a bit "floaty" for my tastes), the classes are great, especially with more introduced in later expansions, and the world is huge with tons to explore. A must play for MMO fans.

header.jpg

Game #21 - Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns
Platform - PC
Time: 20 hours
Rating: 2/5

And my love / hate relationship with Guild Wars 2 (or it's expansions I guess) begins, and this was a HUGE let down for me. The new zones introduced are a pain in the ass to navigate, the story did nothing for me after the great set up coming into the expansion. But it's the zones that really drag the whole thing down (some people love them tho) as the vertical nature of the early ones coupled with the nightmarish mazes of the later ones just made the whole thing a slog to get through.

Game #22 - Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire
Platform - PC
Time: 15 hours
Rating: 5/5

But we bounce right back with Path of Fire, easily my favorite GW2 expansion, as I loved everything about it from the story to the zones to the new stuff added. I wish the main story had been a little longer as I really wanted a bit more, especially after the slog that Thorns was.

header.jpg

Game #23 - Guild Wars 2 End of Dragons
Platform - PC
Time: 15 hours
Rating: 4/5

Another great expansions, while a notch below PoF story wise in my opinion, I still really liked it and hey, it introduced Mechanic which is my favorite class in the game so it gets bonus points for that. The Samurai setting is a bit "been there done that every mmo needs a Asian setting expansion apparently", but they do it well so I didn't mind it.

Game #24 - Guild Wars 2 Living World
Platform - PC
Time: 40 hours
Rating: 3/5

Wasn't sure if I was going to include this or not, as It's pretty much a collection of content patches book ending each expansion and setting up the next ones, but to this day you still need to pay for them with in game currency or buy the fancy complete edition on Steam, so they are effectively DLC so i'm including it. Content wise, it's very much a mixed bag, with some of my favorite story content in GW2, but also some of the worse. For completionists only probably.

header.jpg

Game #25 - Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure
Platform - PC
Time: 10 hours
Rating: 2/5

And it ends on a bummer note with another super disappointing expansion, as with much like Heart of Thorns, not only did the story do nothing for me, but the zones were a pain in the ass to navigate due to being made for the dynamic flying mounts which I have to say, after so much hype, felt really disappointing (and were done much better in WoW in that game's latest expansion in my opinion). I was also probably very burned out at this point after playing around 300 hours of Guild Wars 2 back to back, but looking at the reception on Steam for example (mixed reviews) it seems many agree its not very good.

header.jpg

Game #26 - Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
Platform - PC
Time: 30 hours
Rating: 4/5

I really liked this but I am a big Borderlands fanboy, and it's more of that except in a fantasy setting. At this point, you either are a fan of their style of game and you know what you're getting, or you're not a fan and this won't change your mind. Like I said, I'm a fan so I enjoyed it a lot.

header_alt_assets_2.jpg

Game #27 - Vampire Survivors
Platform - Switch
Time: Ongoing
Rating: 5/5

I had played this last year on the Series X on gamepass and loved it, so when it hit the Switch it was a no brainer to replay at work, especially with how cheap it is. And I was flabergasted with how good the port is, as I was sure the system would buckle under the chaos, but it handles it fine. The game itself is ridiculously addictive as we know, I honestly put it as one of the great games of all time these days especially with the way it keeps putting out new content. It's one of those "perfect games" in my opinion.

header.jpg

Game #28 - Lies of P
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: 75 hours
Rating: 5/5

Absolutely fantastic Souls-like, easily the best made by anyone not Fromsoft (and even better than some of the Fromsoft ones to be honest), it looks great, it plays fantastic, the world setting is awesome, it's super polished, just a complete win all around for the studio, and I can't wait to see what they do with the DLC and especially with a sequel. It's easily my GOTY and I loved it so much I immediatly replayed it with a different character after I finished (thus the 75 hours, pretty much 40 the first time, 35 the second time). It should count twice!

header.jpg

Game #29 - Diablo 4
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: Ongoing
Rating: 3.5/5

I'll be honest, I know it's cool to hate on the game, but I really liked it at launch. I loved the campaign, I loved the couple of classes I played, the world, I had a blast. I never reached level 100 because back then levels were slower and whatnot, but I did pretty much everything there was to do. Unfortunately, I also fell off hard, I played very little of season 1 and I've played even less of season 2, so maybe the "ongoing" moniker isn't very accurate. I still want to go back to it one of these days, if only to try out a new class as that's usually fun.

header.jpg

Game #30 - A Plague's Tale Requiem
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: 20 hours
Rating: 5/5

I was a big fan of the first game and this sequel improves on pretty much everything, tells a better (and much darker) story, and with the recent 60fps patch, looks and runs amazing. It still has the fundamental problem that every stealth game has, it's very trial and error, but that doesn't bother me, especially not when everything else is so good. I can't believe they went there with the ending too, kudos. An absolute must play, just like the first one was.

header.jpg

Game #31 - Lords of the Fallen
Platform - Xbox Series X
Time: 50 hours
Rating: 4/5

Mixed bag with this one, because on one hand I really loved the game, especially the exploration adpect (which I still maintain is some of the best Souls-like exploration around), but on the other hand, the game is VERY janky, has some real asshole enemy placement especially late game, and performance wasn't the best when I played. It's probably more of a 3.5/5, but Im a Souls fanboy and the game scratched all the right itches for me, so I'm being generous.

header.jpg

Game #32 - Monster Sanctuary
Platform - Switch
Time: 30 hours
Rating: 3.5/5

Really cool mix of genres, as the game is basically your standard metroidvania from a gameplay and exploration perspective, but all the combat is Pokemon battles. The campaign is a bit longer than it should be as I was just about ready to be done with the game long before it ended, and there's a nasty difficulty spike in the end game that made me have to grind out a new team to beat it, but overall I really liked it and thought both genres mixed nicely.

qcrL3y1.jpg

Game #33 - Warcraft Rumble
Platform - Mobile
Time: Ongoing
Rating: 2.5/5

Super fun until it becomes obnoxiously pay-2-win is the best way I can describe this, as I was having a blast with it until late in the campaign where I hit a unpassable roadblock until I managed to level up all my units (very slowly since im not paying for boosts), and then I could finally get pass that, only to run into the next one. And don't even get me started on PVP. Still, it looks great, and it is fun enough to come back every day and do the daily quests for gold and whatnot. Fun timewaster if you don't think too much about it.

header.jpg

Game #34 - Astlibra Revision
Platform - Switch
Time: 33 hours
Rating: 3.5/5

What a bummer this one turned out to be. Gameplay wise, it's a fantastic 2d action rpg (it might look like a metroidvania but it's more akin to Zelda 2 for example), and the writing and story are very serviceable... until the uglyness rears it's head, and some of the worst, cringiest dialogue and disgusting scenarios pop up, as if it was written by a horny 14 year old watching anime for the first time. There's some REALLY dodgy things in it which really drag the whole thing down, which is a shame because the actual game is really good and original.

header.jpg

Game #35 - Portal
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 4.5/5

Great port of one of my favorite games ever, it still completely holds up, and the Switch version is basically perfect. Saving the 5/5 for the sequel tho.

header.jpg

Game #36 - Itta
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 4/5

Awesome dual stick shooter action adventure, with gorgeous pixel art and satisfying bullet hell gameplay, and a darker than expected story. It's pretty short, but it's one of those cases where that is for it's benefit, as even at just 4 hours it's packed with a ton of bosses and quite a few zones to explore. Just a great little game all around.

header.jpg

Game #37 - Tales From Space Mutant Blob Attack!!!
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 4/5

Replay for this one, one of Drinkbox's first games, and it still holds up as a super fun Katamari-esque 2d platformer. Switch port is pretty much perfect and it looks gorgeous on the OLED screen.

header.jpg

Game #38 - Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 3/5

Cute little point and click adventure with a cool stylized spy aesthetic. Some of the puzzles got a little obtuse for me and I had to check a guide a few times, but overall it was a good time and never overstayed it's welcome.

header.jpg

Game #39 - Golf Club Wasteland (or Nostalgia as it's apparently called on Steam)
Platform - Switch
Time: 2 hours
Rating: 1/5

It has some pretty good 2d art... that's about all the positive I can say about this, as I absolutely hated the gameplay, a collection of increasingly frustrating levels where you never feel in control of your golf swings as the game clearly wants you to. Hated my time with it even tho it's very short.

header.jpg

Game #40 - Lost Words Beyond The Page
Platform - Switch
Time: 5 hours
Rating: 3/5

Cute little 2d platformer which some unique mechanics around using words to manipulate the environments, and a surprisingly touching story (although your mileage may vary here as it's one of those "tragic event disguised by a kid's fantasy" tropes). It's not amazing by any means but it looks good and it's not too long.

header.jpg

Game #41 - Anuchard
Platform - Switch
Time: 9 hours
Rating: 3.5/5

This was a cool zelda-esque action rpg with some increasingly good dungeons to wade through as you save various villagers, upgrade your dude and do various side quests, but unfrotunately the writing (and there is A LOT) did nothing for me, as they clearly tried to create their universe here, but none of it was interesting. But the game itself was really fun, the art style is unique but good, and the gameplay is simple but satisfying. I really liked it, even if I ended up ignoring the story completely.

header.jpg

Game #42 - Elli
Platform - Switch
Time: 5 hours
Rating: 3.5/5

Pretty good 3d platformer with tight gameplay, great art style and the exploration and puzzles never get frustrating. Story is super simple but it serves it's purpose, as you go around collecting your mcguffins in various puzzle-y locations. Great Switch version too, ran great portable.

header.jpg

Game #43 - Figment
Platform - Switch
Time: 5 hours
Rating: 3.5/5

Isometric action - puzzle game with gorgeous 2d art and great voice acting (and singing!), the weird locales you visit are really imaginative, and the puzzles never get frustrating which is always my fear with puzzle games. The only downside unfortunately is the fact that the Switch version completely tanks performance in the last level, to the point that it made it hard to finish, and thus made me dock a little score. Great game overall tho, I'm very curious about the sequel now.

header.jpg

Game #44 - Mystik Belle Enchanted Edition
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 3/5

Cute little metroidvania with very good pixel art but a little too much "object hunting" (it almost feels like a point and click adventure to be honest), the whole thing is pretty easy and shrot, always feeling like "my first metroidvania", but it's well made and charming, so I enjoyed it. Definitely not as good as many others in the genre, and these days there are a lot.

header.jpg

Game #45 - Down in Bermuda
Platform - Switch
Time: 3 hours
Rating: 2/5

Hidden object puzzle game with some cute 2d art, but some of the puzzles seemed quite obtuse in my opinion, and the whole thing just didn't do much for me. It's not terrible by any means, but I guess hidden object games just aren't my jam as I already hadn't enjoyed Hidden Folks last year for example.

header.jpg

Game #46 - Old Man's Journey
Platform - Switch
Time: 2 hours
Rating: 2/5

Very short walking sim with some good 2d art and a cool background manipulation mechanic marred by super flimsy controls (at least on the Switch) that made the whole thing more grating than enjoyable. Much like Down in Bermuda, it's not terrible but it did absolutely nothing for me.

header.jpg

Game #47 - The Almost Gone
Platform - Switch
Time: 3 hours
Rating: 3.5/5

This on the other hand tickled all the right itches for me, from the gorgeous isometric minimalistic art style, to the puzzles and story, at least until the end game, where it got a bit too hard for me and send me straight into a guide (especially the hospital level with the tubes >_>), but it's one of those games (much like another one later) where I loved the vibe so much, I can look past some of the weaker points.

header.jpg

Game #48 - The Lightbringer
Platform - Switch
Time: 5 hours
Rating: 1.5/5

What was an enjoyable if unremarkable isometric 3d platformer for the first half of the game completely falls apart in the second half thanks to levels becoming more and more in need of pixel perfect jumps and the game's gameplay (or camera) is nowhere near as precise as it needed to be for it. And the worst part (something that actually happened again with another game later) is that if you lose all your lives, you need to restart the whole level over from scratch, and the second half levels get quite long. Horribly dated system, ain't nobody have the time or the patience for that shit these days, especially not with a game that is already middling to start with. Shame, I actually enjoyed the first half.

header.jpg

Game #49 - Silt
Platform - Switch
Time: 3 hours
Rating: 4/5

Absolutely gorgeous (and creepy) underwater puzzle game, where you swim around possessing various sea creatures to progress. It's very simple mechanically, and there is a heavy amount of trial and error, and it's very short, but damn if it isn't completely carried by the amazing aesthetic. I probably loved it more than most, mostly for the art style and just overall vibe of the game, but I still think it's a unique (and again, gorgeous) game worth playing, especially for horror fans.

header.jpg

Game #50 - Moon Raider
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 3/5

This was a cute little indie 2d shooter, reminiscent of Megaman for example (no boss power stealing tho) that doesn't really do anything particularly new or amazing but it's well made, its fun to play and it's short and breezy.

header.jpg

Game #51 - Cleo A Pirate's Tale
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 3.5/5

Very cool little pirate adventure game with great pixel art and shockingly good voice acting. It's pretty short and the puzzles are on the easy side (I didn't have to check a guide for once!) but both are actually pluses for me with adventure games these days anyway. Cool little story too, Guybrush Threepwood would aprove.

header.jpg

Game #52 - Shu
Platform - Switch
Time: 4 hours
Rating: 2/5

A very by-the-numbers 2d platformer with some decent art style and variety of abilities in various levels with the buddies you are saving, but it's very short, barely has any story and the old school "gem collecting" 2d platformer doesn't do much for me these days. It also commits the same sin as Lightbringer earlier, where when you lose all your lives you need to restart the whole level, which made the very last level of the game one of the most frustrating things I can remember and kinda soured me on the whole thing. Please stop doing this devs, I don't mind banging my head against a section of a level, but if you make me restart the whole thing, it's just going to make me hate your game.

I'm hoping this year is my year! (Probably not because I like long games but I'm sure gonna try!)

Reserving this space!

Carrying over from the end of last year I have 7 games I'm truly working through to try and complete. As long as I keep chugging through I'll at least be able to knock some of them out before the must-haves of the year hit where they'll take up most of my time. I've got my excel sheet for time logs set up...let's go!

Back for another year. Doubt I will make it to even 10 but I can try!

Final Fantasy XVI 4/5
Fun, a lot of the skills having multiple mechanics making them situational was fun, and even with the damage penalty Odin was a great bunch of skills. Enjoyed the more "mature" tone as really a lot of this stuff would have me saying "fuck" too.
edit: did i not beat anything this year????

Getting rid of my backlog this time. Old out first, then new games lol

35/52 COMPLETED

1. Crash Nsane Trilogy: Crash 3: Warped [5 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-JAN/ finished-JAN)
RATING: 3/5

Fun game, way easier than 2, some weird design choices for this one that sometimes didn't really work. Looking forward to Crash 4. The racing levels suckkk.

2. Devil May Cry V [6 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-DEC/ finished-JAN)
RATING: 4/5

Loved the combat, although I did find the controls to be a bit finicky, possibly because this is my first DMC canon game. Story was interesting, the reveal not that surprising but enjoyable enough, the cheesy oneliners though, they add so much more fun to the story. Out of the three characters, Nero is my favorite to control, using his swappable arms with each of their own abilities was so dang fun to mix up the combat. The worst part of the game is the constant cutscenes, I just wanna move on and keep on fighting but every time I get into a new area, there's like a cutscene that gets in the way of me juggling enemies. Felt archaic so hopefully the next DMC has less of that.

Cuphead [?? hours] Switch
(started-OCT/ finished-??)
I like this game but sometimes, you just gotta take a break lmao.

Asterigos: Curse of the Stars [5 hours] PC
(started-JAN/ finished-??)
Still enjoyable but feels unpolished as well.

3. The Council [13 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-JAN/ finished-FEB)
RATING: 3.5/5

I loved this experience of making dialogue choices being something you have to work for to unlock where usually in these kinda point and click games, those options are usually straight up unlocked. Yeah, this game has a janky camera, real bland voice acting besides one or two solid voices and a pretty rushed ending, the overall experience was rather memorable and unique to go through the jank swamp.

4. Pokemon Scarlett [35 hours] Switch COMPLETED
(started-OCT/ finished-FEB)
RATING: 3/5

Finally done, story got a little bit more interesting towards the end but everything before was just plain boring. Performance wasn't as rough as I expected but boy howdy is this game not easy on the eyes, even on handheld. It is especially ugly on my 4K screen, blergh. As much as I was wowed by the first few hours of Pokemon! BUT open world vibes, it loses it's luster once you visit the same amount of boring to interact lifeless cities, dull gym experiences, Pokemon that go ? or ! Overall, this is one of the the most boring and dull open world that is only carried by the fact that it's a Pokemon game. I will say, the character designs are top notch stuff.

5. Crash 4 [5 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-JAN/ finished-FEB)
RATING: 3/5

Who the fuck designed that second last level. I hate you. I liked the masks aspect but by mid point, I didn't really love their inclusion. Where as in Crash trilogy, now in Crash 4, you can screw yourself even more with the masks gameplay addition! There are also some old designs from the trilogy that still exists in this modern game that are headscratchers of why they didn't update this part of the series. Visually, easily the best looking game of the series so far.

6. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard [14hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-JAN/ finished-FEB)
RATING: 4.5/5

After having beaten RE8 last year, this game oozes in terrifying atmosphere compared to the sequel. The molded are also a great design to RE7 since these dark molded creatures can be easy to miss, a bunch of times I've been surprised to see some and go oh shit. The house and the other areas were great to explore and the hidden items in corners and dark spots felt very rewarding to find those items and ammos. This was a great revamp to the RE series!

7. Turing Test [4 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-FEB/ finished-FEB)
RATING: 4/5

Came for portal-ish, stayed for philosophical banters about consciousness and choice. Visually it's solid stuff for a PS4 game, even reflections on surface was neat. The puzzles are very intuitive and well made, to the point I used a guide for just 2 of many many solid puzzles. Solid game.

8. Dead Space Remake [12 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
PLATINUM GET

(started-FEB/ finished-FEB)
RATING: 4/5

It's good to have Dead Space back baby! Really love shooting the limbs off and smooshing necromorphs with my boots and the weapons all feel much better now, that I actually rotate my weapons besides the usual 2-3 main weapons for OG DS. The new updates like characters, choosing electrical sources, space traversal and side quests are great additions to an already great start to a franchise. I will say the visuals are the weakest aspect of this game, especially compared to DS's spiritual successor, Callisto Protocol. Dead Space 2 Remake can't come sooner!

9. Horizon: Forbidden West[70 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
PLATINUM GET

(started-FEB/ finished-MAR)
RATING: 4.5/5

I am so glad this came on PS plus and I am so sorry to GG for not buying this game when it launched, it's such a significant step up from the first game. The combat is much more engaging with plenty of weapon types and verticality options along with special moves too, the new machines are freaking awesome to fight and gawk at, the world is a visual feast to explore and take photomode pics with and the characters are more memorable this time around. Story is just as interesting as the first one.

Can't wait for the DLC!

10. Resident Evil 4 Remake [35hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-MAR/ finished-APR)
RATING: 5/5

Lives up to the original and more. Replayed this 5 times and probably more in the future. Haven't even touched Mercernaries mode. Possibly GOTY?

11. Ridge Racer 2 [6 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-FEB/ finished-APR)
RATING: 4/5

Yo, this game is super fun. Drifting is perfect for me, the music bops and the tracks feel so varied enough, even with duplicates. Those final last races against is BS though.

12. Hogwarts Legacy [18 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-MAR/ finished-APR)
RATING: 2.5/5

What happened, this was so fun initially but then got boring from before the midpoint to the end. No memorable characters and a whatever story, side missions were just as forgettable. Combat is the only highlight for this game.

13. Star Wars: Jedi: Survivor [53 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
PLATINUM GET

(started-APR/ finished-MAY)
RATING: 4/5

Hell of a step up in terms of side content, combat and basically jedi force fuckery. Performance still sucks but patches seem to improve things. Weaker story to FO. Dug the wider levels. Looking forward to the third game!

14. Fire Emblem Engage [27 hours] SWITCH COMPLETED
(started-FEB/ finished-MAY)
RATING: 4/5

Great strategy aspect, lacking social aspect I enjoyed from three houses. Story was fine, nothing memorable, sadly the same for the characters, there's just too many the game throws at you that I didn't care if they complain they haven't been on the field in a while. Visually, the best looking Fire Emblem game so far.

15. Ratchet & Clank [15 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
PLATINUM GET

(started-MAY/ finished-JUN)
RATING: 4.5/5

My god, this is one amazing looking game! Awe inspiring visuals along with exciting set pieces that threw me back to Uncharted 4 sequences, but this game does U4 and go beyond too! While I do think the visuals are crazy good, it does a bit messy at times with how much things are on the screen. The amount of weapons are varied and fun. Decent story but nothing outstanding, did like Rivet a bunch, wouldn't mind a spin off series or something with her.

16. Sackboy: A Big adventure [12 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-MAY/ finished-MAY)
RATING: 3.5/5

This is pretty fun through coop but on it's own, it's a fine platformer with some really cool ideas and concept. I was more pulled in through the music levels but it felt like a nice lil platformer. Also while visually looks pretty good, I did have some motion sickness with some of the levels, especially with the ones with moving and shifting backgrounds, like oof I didn't feel great playing a couple of these levels.

LoZ: Tears of the Kingdom [60 hours] SWI
(started-MAY/ finished-??)
One more temple!

17. Thymesia [13 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-JUN/ finished-JUN)
RATING: 3.5/5

Pretty solid fighting mechanics but everything else around that just feels lacking. Fun game none the less.

18.Ghostwire Tokyo [12hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-JUN/ finished-JUL)
RATING: 2.5/5

This combat is pretty bad, the story is whatever but the art style is great though nothing in here really say this is a PS5 exclusive besides switching objects out fast.

19. Deathloop [19hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-AUG/ finished-SPT)
RATING: 3/5

I want to like this game, there's so much of that Arkane goodness I love from Dishonored and Prey here but the process to figure out the main storyline was way too complicated for me. Even with guides, I was so confused about the where whens and whichs of making progress.

20. Final Fantasy XVI [12hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-AUG/ finished-AUG)
RATING: 4.5/5

Definitely one of my top 5 games this year, fantastic combat and epic boss battles, visuals and beautiful soundtrack. An emotionally touching story with memorable characters and depths to them. Ben Starr deserves a TGA for his performance cause he was absolutely stellar. Even with fetch side quests, the rewards are well worth the effort and thanks to next gen tech, fast travel is as fast as a snap so finishing up the sidequests is fast and easy too.

My only gripes is that thanks to next gen features of insane particle effects here and there, it can be a bit difficult to see what's happening on screen. Must play!

21. Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon [69hours] PS5 COMPLETED
PLATINUM GET

(started-AUG/ finished-AUG)
RATING: 4.5/5

Action game of the year, tight controls, fantastic combat and hits, memorable OST, stellar art style and a story/stories that goes places, Nier Automata-ish. Combat's so good, it topped FF16 and I spent so much customizing, adjusting, killing bosses that used to take me hours in a matter of seconds. It's a shame the multiplayer aspect is so lacking and feels like a backburner when combat with other players brings the thrill to higher heights.

22. Inside [3hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-AUG/ finished-OCT)
RATING: 5/5

Wow, just wow. From the art and visuals to the sounds and intuitive gameplay design, just stellar. No complaints. Must play for anyone.

23. Unpacking [2hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-SEP/ finished-OCT)
RATING: 4.5/5

Short and sweet, great visuals and very comfy and wholesome. Only gripe is probably some cultural differences as a non-American, I had no other for some items and furniture.

24. Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 [56 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-SEP/ finished-OCT)
RATING: 4.5/5

I kinda understand now how this game was getting some good to high review back during it's launch. This game has stellar writing, characters, a thriving and a fun world to explore, gorgeous looking visuals and options and consequences that really makes you think, "was that the good option??". Combat and stealth is fine but I didn't really dig the stamina bar, felt redudant, like I'm a cyborg that can double jump and hack shit but I have such low melee stamina.

Loved my time with this game, really recommend this one.

25. Spider-Man 2 [32 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
PLATINUM GET

(started-OCT/ finished-NOV)
RATING: 4/5

Not my personal GOTY, but a top 5 for sure, just for the traversal alone. It definitely feels like a 1.8 from MM's 1.2 sequel. Combat is more streamlined but I do miss the weapon circle since it helps slow down time during hectic moments of enemies being thrown by the baskets. The story was interesting with the Harry/Venom/Kraven inclusion but I feel it had the same emotional weight of the last 2 games. Graphically, they stepped everything up, the refelections, the NPCs, the new areas and water too, excellent step up.

26. Snowrunner [7 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-NOV/ finished-NOV)
RATING: 2.5/5

I can see the appeal that I loved in Death Stranding but this is just way too hardcore of that appeal lol. I had fun with it but it's not for me.

27. Subliminal [7 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-NOV/ finished-NOV)
RATING: 4.5/5

A pretty fresh and unique puzzler that is intuitive enough but a bit short.

28. Returnal [18 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-NOV/ finished-NOV)
RATING: 4.5/5

I can see why this was showered with golden praise. The controls are tight, the haptics and triggers are well implemented, the randomness of levels should you die and the story is mysterious but a bit underwhelming towards the end. Visually it's a looker and a feast of colors and particles, along with really unique looking alien world and designs. A must play for any ps5 owner.

29. El Hijo [6 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-NOV/ finished-NOV)
RATING: 1.5/5

There's too much jank in this game to even give it a halfer. Story gets a bit convoluted by the end IMO. A somewhat interesting stealth game but controls and weird aiming just ruined my overall experience.

30. It Takes Two [7 hours 30 min] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-NOV/ finished-NOV)
RATING: 4.5/5

I can see why this won GOTY, for it's amazing levels, visuals and solid smooth performance, it's a no surprise.

31. Soulstice [17 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-NOV/ finished-DEC)
RATING: 2/5

Very DMC like with anime visuals and Berserk inspirations, odd pacing towards the end. Combat is sorta janky and feels more like extra steps to kill off enemies with blue and red combat theming. So much so, I got annoyed as I finished my playthrough of the game. Liked the whip weapon a lot and the controller shaking to show a pause is done to do special moves is very neat design that I hope future action games implement this feature as well. The controls are janked up though. Visuals were initially cool with the blue and orang theme but gets repetitive towards the end.

I'll say this, this feels like an Uncharted 1 situation where hopefully this sequel will be much better.

32. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory[7 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-OCT/ finished-DEC)
RATING: 4/5

God, I forgot how good the music it is in every kingdom hearts, quite a fun trip of going through memories. A simple enough rhythm game for KH fans and a somewhat traditional convoluted KH narrative. It does capture the adventure of a KH game but very simplified.

Cant wait for more KH nonsense with 4.

33. Legend of Ethernal [6 hours 30 min] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-DEC/ finished-DEC)
RATING: 2/5

There is too much annoying game designs for me to give this even a 3. There are some good ideas but some enemy types and boss, along with platforming that left quit the game at times.

34. Foreclosed [4 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-NO/ finished-DEC)
RATING: 1/5

Yeah, bad shooting, a somewhat interesting but fell flat story and pretty short, thankfully.

35. Bioshock Remastered[13 hours] PS5 COMPLETED
(started-JUL/ finished-DEC)
RATING: 4.5/5

Man, even given how dated the graphics are, the atmosphere, the noises and the gameplay is just fantastic. Exploring around rapture, hearing "Jesus loves me, this I know", not knowing where this splicer was, it's so good. I still much preferred Bioshock 2's combat gameplay over 1 but this is still an easy must play/replay.

01 | Glass Masquerade 2: Temptations DLC
PC | Jan 02 | 2 h | 5/5

Absolutely loved Glass Masquerade 2 when I played it in 2020. I saw they had DLCs on sale; I had to get all three. There's even a free DLC!

There's 9 new puzzles plus a free demo puzzle for this pack. Not much to say other than it's more of the same. Worth it.

I'll probably never finish this because of life, but I still like to try anyways. We'll see how far I get this year.

1 day of the year down, 2 games completed. That's how I like to start the new year.

1. Lil Gator Game (NS) - 3 Hours - 8/10
This was a great game to start the year with. Its bright, colourful and just a joy to play, taking the freedom of Breath of the Wild and bringing it together with a wholesome A Short Hike esque story and feel. It certainly helped to get me out of my gaming rut as it was just impossible to not smile as you slide down hills on a dinner tray, slashed cardboard monsters with your litter picker and completed your village to bring all your friends together. I do just wish there was a map/mini-map to help keep track of where you are but that aside, it was great fun to romp around and start the year off.

2. Mirror's Edge (XSS) - Under 4 Hours - 8.5/10
An absolute classic in my eyes. I've lost track of how many times I've completed it. It's just brilliant when you get into the groove and are just wall running, vaulting and springboarding your way through levels without stopping. The controls are ingrained in my memory so even though its been a year, its something I can quickly pick up and replay with ease which is again something appreciated as I start the year and get out of my gaming rut. Its still a looker as the visuals still hold up really well (and that FPS boost to 60 is much appreciated), the soundtrack is phenomenal and the only real drawbacks are the ship level and the combat portions on The Shard which really drag it down with the poor combat mechanics. Still a fantastic game that I'll come back to again and again.

2/52
