Another year, another challenge, another time I miss out on first page :P

==========================
Scoring System

5/5: Excellent perfect game, a margin very few games reach

Never quite reach 52 but enjoy just trying to beat a few.

1. Headlander 4/5 8 hours of playtime 100% complete: very stylishly fun game with a few parts that happen to be annoying just to be annoying (grid clash and the color stuff period). kept running into a controller issue so had to hard reset several times

2. a Short Hike 5/5 4 hours of playtime: This is the shit I like. The camera can blow me though.

3. Peaky Blinders: Mastermind 3/5 9.5 hours of playtime: holy shit is this game different than anything I expected. Imagine a multi-character stealth title where you can manipulate time to pull off the perfect heist with all the characters from the show. RIP Polly.

4. 1979 Black Revolution 4/5 1.2 hours of playtime: An amazing game that is very well written and emotional, would recommend to anyone that want a more grounded gaming experience.

5. Hot Pot Panic 4/5 15mins: great little indie experience. a lot of fun conversations and is a task to balance talking with your friend and eating.

6. Lutong Bahay: Lola's Home Cooking 3/5 30mins: Very cute with fun dishes.

7. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy 4/5: People here were not lying about the quality of this game. It is very fun and has lots of charm. Hate that I didn't even understand the main elemental component until the last dungeon in the game. Totally cut down on the speed of a lot of fights after that...

8. Marvel's Avengers 3/5: A really good and endearing story but held up by dry missions and a clunky interface. Will try a few online matches too.

9. Marvel's Avengers Part 2 Taking AIM 4/5: Story isn't as good but Kate is a blast to play as! Replaced Black Widow as my favorite to play as in combat, may even main.

10. Marvel's Avengers Part 3 Future Imperfect 2/5: Everything is brown in the future wasteland, Clint is a worse Kate with better specials. Boss at the end of the DLC was troublesome and teammate AI decided to fully shut down and not use any specials or ranged attacks.

11. A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV 1 hour 15mins 3/5: short little game that tells the story of King Regis reading a bedtime tale to a young Noctis. Lotos of creative liberties are taken as you free the crystals from the grasp of a mysterious villain. One that happens to be a fan favorite, Ultros, who just loves to show up in the FFXV universe. The game is an easy-to-pick-up sidescroller with spells and squad companions unlocking on the way. Since combos are quite short it does hurt my arm quite a bit as I just had to mash each over and over again.

12. Wheels of Aurelia 1 hour 20mins 3/5: Ended up with ending D will play it a few more times to unlock some more. Poor Lella. The game is similar to Hot Pot Panic I played earlier in the year. A gave focused 100% on the conversations you are having while the game part, driving isn't as important. Other than a few races you can let the game auto-drive for you. The story having a time and place really helps ground you in the events during Italy in the late '70s.

Playing: Firewatch

I am awful at actually completing games, so we'll see how this goes...but at least I got one, right off the bat!

1. VVVVVV (PC) | 1st Jan - 2hrs | 5/5 - A super-fun, challenging platformer that I started years ago, and finally finished.

  4. Forza Horizon 5
Played Some:

  2. Loop Hero - 20 hours (Got to the last chapter, but it was going to require a lot of grinding for resources)
  3. Star Renegades - 1 hour (Not very readable, would rather just play more XCOM/other roguelites)
  4. Bridge Constructor Portal - 1 hour (Did 10 levels, there wasn't a lot of depth to the puzzles, but it was funny)
  5. Scourgebringer - 2 hours (Each run feels the same for too long)
  6. Gonner2 - .5 hours (Cool art style, not much fun to play)
  7. XCOM: Chimera Squad - .5 hours (Felt cheap, seemed less interesting than XCOM 2 WotC)
  8. Dusk - 1.5 hours (Fun boomer shooter with simple but interesting levels. Got about halfway and moved on).

  2. Final Fantasy VII REMAKE - 10 hours (Looking to get back when not playing other RPGs)
  3. Assassin's Creed Odyssey - 20 hours (Lots of cool systems. Looking to get back to it when I'm not playing other open-world games.)
  4. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - 20 hours (Still tons of fun, plan to come back after playing some newer stuff)
  5. Pathfinder: Kingmaker - 50 hours (Got through Act 3 -- really fun and plan to finish)
  6. The Riftbreaker - 3 hours (Promising, less-complicated Factorio but need to take a break after multiple Halo Wars games)
  7. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - 8 hours (Coming back to this after playing more Runeterra)

Completion Status: 146/52 Games!

COMPLETE! - April 28th!

Replays will be italicized. 2021 releases will be underlined.

Keep a virtual backlog of your video game collection, then rate and review the ones you've played to share with your friends!

PSN/XBL Gamercard:

January - 18 Games
1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (XSX) | 1st January - 29hrs | ★★★★½ | It's incredible just how well this game holds up in pretty much every aspect (except visually) even after 18 years. Easily some of the best work Bioware's ever done, and that's saying a lot. A really, really great start to 2021 for me! Also, just what is it with western RPGs and unnecessary card games? I will never understand that.

2. Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (XSX) | 3rd January - 7.5hrs | ★★★★ | A gorgeous metroidvania that has great traversal/platforming and decent combat, but it was a bit overhyped for me. I was expecting more, but I still had an enjoyable time with it. Hopefully Will of the Wisps manages to live up to my expectations.

3. My Friend Pedro (XSX) | 3rd January - 3hrs | ★★½ | It's like a sidescrolling Hotline Miami, except nowhere near as good and not as pretty. If anything, this just made me appreciate how meticulously designed and paced the two Hotline Miami games and Katana Zero were. I wasn't shocked to learn that this was originally a flash game, because just like many flash games, it's fun in very small doses. This might be the poster child of games that outstay their welcome.

4. Forza Horizon 4 (XSX) | 4th January - 10hrs | ★★★½ | This game doesn't really "end" (AFAIK, credits don't roll unless you trigger them manually) so I decided to stop and mark this completed after finishing the last showcase.

I love kart racers, but "realistic" racing games (things like Driveclub and Need for Speed, for example) are not my cup of tea. Forza Horizon 4 falls into the latter category, which would make it a very "not my cup of tea" game.

Forza Horizon 4 is an exceptionally well made video game. It's absolutely gorgeous and chock full of content. The driving feels fantastic, and the cars are recreated incredibly faithfully as far as I can tell. You can tell that it's a game made with a lot of love. I just don't think it's incredibly fun to play, and I really don't think it's the game's fault. It's just not my cup of tea.

However, I did think that it was fun enough to "finish," and it really deserves props for that, as I usually find games like this insanely boring. I think that says a lot about the overall quality of the title.

5. Sunset Overdrive (XSX) | 5th January - 7.5hrs | ★★½ | Where do I even begin?

I find it shocking that Insomniac made this game. Just on basic level, it feels like something's missing here, but I really can't put my finger on it.

The writing is...interesting. I usually don't mind Saints Row-esque writing, but it just absolutely does not work here. Not a single joke landed for me. It felt like something trying so hard to be funny instead of actually being funny. It legitimately feels intentional, but it isn't.

The mission design is very 2014. This is the most 2014 game I've played in a while. It just felt extremely cookie cutter and basic, and I honestly expected better. The PS2 Ratchet & Clank games had better mission design than this, and the first one came out in 2002. You do a whole lot of defending objects in this game, and that's not something I particularly enjoy.

The game's saving graces are the traversal and combat, both of which are extremely fun to just mess around with. The game feels really good to control, and combining grinding with air dashes and wall running is extremely fun. Very reminiscent of Jet Set Radio. You can also pinpoint exactly what they took from this game and put into Spider-Man, which is really cool.

I don't know, maybe it's just me. I've seen a lot of praise for this game, and while I respect that, I personally don't see it. It was not the serve I expected it to be.

6. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords (PC) | 9th January - 30hrs | ★★★★ | This game might quite possibly be the most well written Star Wars related thing ever. If not, it is certainly the most intriguing. It's a deeper, more complex exploration of Star Wars, and it tackles subjects Star Wars doesn't usually touch on. It manages to genuinely have nuance, something I think Star Wars generally lacks. Then you get to the actual game, which is a fucking mess.

Even with TSLRCM installed, it's painfully obvious that the game is unfinished. Aside from the vast amount of bugs I've encountered (the most annoying of which is random line skipping, which genuinely ruined a good amount of the experience for me), the game has absolutely no flow. Instead, it feels like disjointed. Like a bunch of scenes that are stitched together in hopes that they somehow make sense. It's not unlike the state Final Fantasy XV launched in.

It's a shame, because the writing is gold. I rank this below the original simply because it's a nightmare to play. Still, everything else is so good that I can't give it a lower score than this.

7. Donkey Kong Country (Switch) | 12th January - 1.5hrs | ★★★★ | Still an extremely solid platformer. Some cheap bits here and there, but it has aged incredibly well overall.

Also, I really don't remember it being this short. The rewind feature on Switch might have to do something with it, though. Using it cuts playtime quite a bit.

8. Dragon Age: Origins (XSX) | 17th January - 23.5hrs | ★★★½ | Maybe it's because I'd just come off of playing the two KOTOR games, but I can't help but feel a little disappointed. I still had a blast, don't get me wrong, but something here feels a little less...nuanced. The characters are great, but the setting is kind of a generic medieval fantasy setting. I didn't find the story particularly strong, either. It was also incredibly buggy, but that might be the result of playing it on Xbox Series X. It seemed like the game was loading a little too fast and screwing things up.

Still, I'm really looking forward to playing all the DLC and the rest of the entries.

9. Dragon Age: Origins - The Stone Prisoner (XSX) | 18th January - 1.5hrs | ★★★ | I love Shale so much!

Shale disapproves

10. Dragon Age: Origins - Leliana's Song (XSX) | 18th January - 1.5hrs | ★★★ | I actually missed Leliana in my playthrough of Origins, so it was nice to get know her and some of her backstory. Other than that, it's meh. Wish she'd gotten a longer and bigger campaign, because she's really interesting.

11. Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening (XSX) | 19th January - 12.5hrs | ★★★½ | I thought this was about as good as the main campaign. I think I liked it a little more? I appreciated the tighter pace and the lower amount of areas. I also really, really like the mostly new cast. It was also more fantasy that medieval, which also might have something to do with why I enjoyed it a bit more.

12. Dragon Age: Origins - Witch Hunt (XSX) | 20th January - 1.5hrs | ★★ | Extremely mediocre. Probably my least favorite piece of Origins DLC. Docked an extra ½ star because the final boss completely bugged out me and wouldn't appear. I had to Youtube the ending (which was disappointing, honestly, so I wouldn't have missed out on much anyways).

13. Dragon Age II (XSX) | 21st January - 24hrs | ★★★½ | I'd put this at the same level as the original. I vastly preferred the cast of characters and the story (even if Act 3 is a bit of a mess) and maybe even the combat, but the game has a ridiculously smaller scope than the original. That's not an inherently bad thing, obviously (I even tend to prefer games with smaller scopes), but it doesn't feel...intentional here at all. Seemed like it was either a budgetary issue or a time management one, or both.

Still, I had fun and I really don't think it deserves all the hate that it gets.

14. Dragon Age II: Legacy (XSX) | 21st January - 2.5hrs | ★★★ | A solid piece of DLC that sets up Dragon Age: Inquisition surprisingly well. Other than that, it's unremarkable.

15. Dragon Age: Inquisition (PS5) | 28th January - 66hrs | ★★★★ | Yes, the MMO world and quest design kind of sucks (even though I honestly don't think it's that bad), and the combat is nothing special. But honestly, all of that isn't what I'm here for. Dragon Age, to me, is all about storytelling and characters, and I honestly think Inquisition does both of those things extremely well. Better than the previous two games, even. I mean, come on, Dorian's in this game.

And yes, I love the singing scene. Fuck you.

16. Dragon Age: Inquisition - Jaws of Hakkon (PS5) | 28th January - 2.5hrs | ★★★ | This was alright. Frostback Basin is a great area, and some of the lore introduced here was nice. Disappointing final boss, though.

17. Dragon Age: Inquisition - The Descent (PS5) | 28th January - 3hrs | ★★ | Was not a big fan of this, unfortunately. Seeing more dwarves and learning about additional dwarven lore was cool, but the entire DLC felt like one giant dungeon that dragged on and on, and the final boss is quite possibly my least favorite Dragon Age fight ever. Disappointing.

18. Dragon Age: Inquisition - Trespasser (PS5) | 29th January - 6hrs | ★★★★½ | I can't say too much without spoiling anything, so I'll just say that this is easily the best Dragon Age content yet. The future of this franchise in incredibly exciting.
February - 9 Games
19. Cyber Shadow (Switch) | 1st February - 5hrs | ★★½ | Unfair difficulty and intentionally frustrating level design is not why people liked retro action platformers. Shovel Knight, The Messenger, Curse of the Moon and the like understood that perfectly. Cyber Shadow did not.

20. Star Wars Battlefront II (PS5) | 4th February - 4hrs | ★★★ | The campaign's story is initially interesting, but quickly devolves into dumb Star Wars fan service an hour or so in. The good parts of it have no chance to breathe, because the game is more concerned with showcasing its set-pieces than telling a story (which, in all fairness, is very on brand for Star Wars). Still, I genuinely had fun the whole way through.

21. Star Wars Battlefront II: Resurrection (PS5) | 4th February - 1.5hrs | ★★ | A less-than-medicore continuation of a mediocre story.

22. Yakuza Kiwami 2 (XSX) | 5th February - 12.5hrs | ★★★½ | This is the first Dragon Engine game I've played, and on top of the cities looking gorgeous, it's insane to me just how much the seamless transitions add to the atmosphere.

I think I liked Kiwami 2 more than Kiwami. Across the board, it's better. Better characters, story, pacing, combat, et cetera. However, I do think it's a little bloated, which seems to be a running thing with me and Yakuza. The game would've flowed better had three or four hours been shaved off, imo.

23. Shadows of the Damned (XSX) | 7th February - 8hrs | ★★½ | Suda. Mikami.

This was not it.

24. Return of the Obra Dinn (Switch) | 8th February - 9.5hrs | ★★★★★ | Talking about Return of the Obra Dinn without spoiling anything can be quite difficult, so to avoid spoiling this incredibly unique, wonderful experience, I won't be delving into details.

Obra Dinn is an investigation game through-and-through. This is actually the main reason I've been putting it off for so long, since I honestly feel like I'm, uh, maybe a little "dumb" for these types of games (not an investigation game, but I basically cheated my way through The Witness. Eat your heart out, Jonathan Blow). Without going into details, one of the many things Obra Dinn does expertly is its way of handling all of that. The game makes sure you never feel lost, and if you do, it's probably intentional. It rides a very thin line between it spelling the solution out for you and it frustrating you throughout its entire run.

The same goes for the rest of the game. Everything is fine-tuned to a T. The main gameplay loop, the story, the (fantastic) score, et cetera. All of it feels so…handcrafted. Lucas Pope had a vision, and he fully committed to it.

The game, obviously, isn't perfect. The ending is a bit disappointing, and the story, while still interesting, isn't as interesting as it may seem and tries to do way too many things at once. I also wish there was less guesswork involved, but that might be more of an issue with me missing a few things than an issue with the game itself.

Still, it's a wholly unique and incredible experience, and absolutely nothing short of an absolute feat.

25. Super Mario 3D World (Switch) | 10th February - 12.5hrs | ★★★★ | I feel the same way about this as I did in 2013. It's a solid 3D platformer with some really good level design and great music. I never got what all of the fuss was about, and I still don't.

26. Bowser's Fury (Switch) | 11th February - 8hrs | ★★★★ | This legitimately felt like a more refined version of what they were trying to do with Odyssey. Would've loved if this was actually its own thing instead of being bundled-in with something else and having a smaller scope because of that. If this is where 3D Mario is headed, then it's extremely exciting.

X. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch) | 11th February - 20.5hrs | ★★★★ | An extremely weird package of two high quality Mario games that, other than asset and moveset reuse, have practically nothing to do with each other.

27. Astrologaster (iOS) | 28th February - 6hrs | ★★½ | This was alright. My main issue with it is that it got old extremely quickly. The singing was cute, though.
March - 13 Games
28. Ninja Gaiden (NES) | 1st March - 3hrs | ★★★ | It's a classic, not really much else to say. I can't not praise the controls, though. It's insane to me just how snappy they feel, even now.

29. Alba: A Wildlife Adventure (iOS) | 2nd March - 2.5hrs | ★★★ | Easily my least favorite Ustwo game by far. This was extremely cozy and cute, but the two Monument Valley games and Assemble with Care were special games. This lacked that special spark.

30. Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES) | 2nd March - 2hrs | ★★★ | I thought this was slightly easier than the first, but I'm not sure if it's because they toned the difficulty down or because the game was just designed better. I think it's the latter.

31. Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (NES) | 3rd March - 2hrs | ★★★ | This was the hardest out of the trilogy, but it's the wackiest and had the most variety.

32. Ninja Gaiden Shadow (Game Boy) | 3rd March - 1.5hrs | ★★ | Going from the snappy controls of the NES games to this was rough. I do think this game does a few things better than the NES games but the controls kind of bring the whole thing down.

33. Persona 5 Strikers (PS5) | 11th March - 50hrs | ★★★★ | This is probably my favorite musou/warriors game I've played. Not a very high bar, but still worth mentioning. I also don't really consider this game a musuo/warriors game but I don't think it really matters.

This is very much a direct sequel to Persona 5, but it's frustrating just how closely it follows its structure. Yes, they're "Jails" instead of "Palaces" this time, and the villains aren't as black and white as Persona 5's, but it feels like they're just changing the variables instead of the whole equation. There's nothing inherently bad about that, but it becomes much more difficult to avoid comparing the two games with each other, and Strikers just doesn't hold up when it's compared to Persona 5/Royal. The arcs are shorter, the villains aren't as developed, and the writing is generally not as strong (and I say this as someone who doesn't think Persona 5 is the pinnacle of video game writing in the first place). It kind of gives off a straight-to-DVD Disney sequel vibe. However, when you look at it as a wholly separate entity, it holds up extremely well. The story is solid, and it's littered with fun "hanging out" sequences (something Persona 5 severely lacked). Zenkichi and Sophia are also easily the best of Atlus' usual "enhanced edition/sequel" characters, and are both developed pretty well. It's just a fun time all around.

The combat is frantic and was honestly pretty frustrating at the beginning, but got better as the game went on, mostly because SP started lasting longer than two battles. There's also way too many things happening on screen at once in any given fight, and it's always extremely distracting. They needed to tone down the effects a little.

I don't know if this is the Phantom Thieves' final outing, but I'm kind of hoping it is. Maybe it's because of the ridiculous amount of Persona 5 content that has come out the past few years, but I feel like I've had my fill of these characters. It's time to let go, and this game is a solid send-off.

34. Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light (NDS) | 13th March - 28hrs | ★★★ | Yeah, the art style is fantastic, and yeah, the game's just really cute and charming in general, but I want to tell you a story.

Let me tell you a story about enemy level scaling in JRPGs.

No.

35. Axiom Verge (PS5) | 15th March - 14.5hrs | ★★★ | This was a perfectly fine metroidvania game. Some really good music and good level design, but I felt like most of it was trying to imitate something else instead of being its own thing. Still, I had fun.

There's also, like, no reason to have that many weapons in a metrodivania.

36. Battlefield 1 (PS5) | 16th March - 6hrs | ★★½ | The campaign was good but completely forgettable. I would've preferred if they just focused on one character or two instead of jumping around constantly.

37. Maquette (PS5) | 17th March - 2hrs | ★★½ | Annapurna's first huge miss, imo. This would've worked so much better as a walking sim (ala Gone Home and What Remains of Edith Finch) OR a pure puzzle game (ala The Witness). Instead, we got a half-baked walking sim puzzle game. Unfortunate, since the concept is fantastic.

38. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game - Complete Edition (Switch) | 19th March - 3hrs | ★★★ | The internet hyped this game up and for what??

39. Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalypse (Switch) | 27th March - 2hrs | ★★½ | This was fine. The comedy is pretty good, but only when you go in knowing what to expect. The game's biggest issue is its length. It's actually a first episode of a game, not an entire game. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not marketed that way at all. Shady as hell.

40. Everhood (Switch) | 29th March - 9hrs | ★★★ | An Undertale clone that misunderstands what made Undertale great, yet still manages to somehow have some really good moments. I'm confused and conflicted.
April - 12 Games
41. Assassin's Creed Valhalla (PS5) | 4th April - 96.5hrs | ★★★½ | My least favorite of the modern Assassin's Creeds by far. Gameplay loop is as good as ever, but the story and characters failed to connect with me this time around, and the insane length of the story just makes it worse. I also didn't find exploring England as interesting as exploring ancient Egypt or Greece.

Also, the cairn events might be the worst additions to the franchise since its inception. Dreadful.

42. Marvel's Avengers (PS5) | 11th April - 20hrs | ★★½ | The campaign's story is actually pretty decent, but when you can feel the repetitive nature of the gameplay loop during a relatively short campaign of a GaaS game, that's a pretty bad sign. You just do the same thing over, and over, and over, and over again.

The game also just...doesn't feel good to play. Even the flying doesn't feel that good. How do make flying not feel good?

It's so frustrating because this had a ton of potential to be something great. So unfortunate.

43. Marvel's Avengers: Kate Bishop - Taking AIM (PS5) | 12th April - 4hrs | ★★½ | Kate is so fun to play as that I actually considered going back and doing a bunch of the endgame content as her. Other than that, it's meh. The story's a bunch of nothing, and the level design's just as boring as usual.

44. Marvel's Avengers: Hawkeye - Future Imperfect (PS5) | 12th April - 3hrs | ★★½ | This really should've been released alongside Taking AIM. Hawkeye's fun, but a little too similar to Kate. The story's better this time around, but not by much. Level design's as bland as ever. It's what I expected, but it's still disappointing.

45. Kaze and the Wild Masks (Switch) | 19th April - 4.5hrs | ★★★★ | Alright, let's get the elephant in the room out of the way first: this is Donkey Kong Country, but it's a bunny and a bunch of masks. I honestly didn't mind how mechanically similar it is to DKC because the level design is fantastic, and so is the music. It's just a really, really solid platformer.

46. Say No! More (Switch) | 19th April - 1.5hrs | ★★½ | This was cute! Very shallow mechanically, but it's pretty funny (even if the jokes don't land all the time).

47. Fractured Minds (XSX) | 19th April - 0.5hrs | | There's a lot of heart put into this, but the execution is...not great. Wanted to give this a better rating.

48. Going Under (PS5) | 25th April - 12hrs | ★★★★ | A rogue-like made for people that don't usually enjoy rogue-likes (rogue-like me!). A ridiculously charming aesthetic, fun dialogue, simple mechanics, short runs and a plethora of assist options made this an extremely enjoyable experience for me.

49. SUPERHOT VR (Quest) | 26th April - 3hrs | ★★★★ | This was exhilarating, doubly so because it was my first VR game ever. I can't believe how perfectly the mechanics translated to VR. My only issue is the throwing, which isn't accurate at all. This sucks, because there's a bunch of sections where you have to rely on throwing objects. Other than that, I had a fantastic time.

50. Monster Hunter Rise (Switch) | 27th April - 21hrs | ★★★★ | This was fun! The new additions, like the Wirebug and Palamutes, are genuinely fantastic and I hope they become series staples, because I genuinely can't imagine not being able to swing around in a Monster Hunter game anymore. Aside from that, the hunts are still extremely fun and the variety of playstyles is still very impressive.

I can't help but feel like the game's a little underbaked, though. It really shows in the ending, which is hilariously abrupt. Rampage quests are also just...not good.

Still a really solid game overall, and one that I'll most definitely be returning to soon.

51. Toree 3D (Switch) | 28th April - 0.5hrs | ★★ | An aggressive mediocre, short 3D platformer. Not bad for a dollar, though.

52. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (Switch) | 28th April - 1.5hrs | ★★★ | A shallow game in terms of mechanics and level design, but the writing is hilarious and it's just a really, really cute game in general.
May - 9 Games
53. Hypnospace Outlaw (Switch) | 5th May - 5hrs | ★★★★ | I'm a big fan of investigation games, and this game delivered in droves. Some of the cases in the back half of the game were ridiculous though, and it doesn't help that the difficulty spiked out of nowhere. Still, it was fun.

I would have probably been obsessed with this game had nostalgia been a factor for me, but sadly it wasn't. I was born in 2000 and started using computers when I was around 5 or 6, and the internet looked very different. Still, I've been hearing that it's a mostly accurate depiction of what the internet was like back then, so it was interesting nonetheless.

54. It Takes Two (PS5) | 7th May - 12hrs | ★★★★½ | A constantly creative and imaginative game that's a fun ride all the way through that was very clearly made with a ton of heart. It just exudes charm. Some of the writing isn't the strongest and the narrative in general leaves a lot to be desired, but I honestly don't think it matters, not when the area around my mouth still hurts from smiling so much while playing the game.

55. Resident Evil Village (PS5) | 9th May - 8.5hrs | ★★★★ | I'm a bigger fan of "Horror" Resident Evil games as opposed to "Punching boulders and crashing through windows" Resident Evil games, so Village was a wild ride, because it absolutely says fuck it and just does both. The first two areas are straight out of Resident Evil 1 and 7, and last two are straight out of Resident Evil 4 and 6. The fact that it still manages to deliver a cohesive experience is nothing short of a miracle. I didn't vibe with it as much as I did with 7 and 2 Remake, but I still had a great time. The final hour or so of the game is awful though, but it's no surprise considering that it's...well, Resident Evil. Wouldn't want to have it any other way.

Also, everything that came out of Ethan's mouth was unintentionally hilarious. I'm not sure if it's the writing or the performance (maybe it's both) but I absolutely could not take him seriously.

56. Resident Evil 3 (2020) (PS5) | 11th May - 4hrs | ★★★ | Was itching for some more Resident Evil after finishing Village so I decided to hop into Resident Evil 3 Remake, which was the only mainline RE that I hadn't played and...I'm conflicted.

I don't think this is a bad game at all. It looks absolutely gorgeous and the art direction is off the charts, but...something feels off. I don't mind that Nemesis is now a bunch of set pieces (I didn't want another Mr. X anyways) but the set pieces themselves aren't good, so it all comes off as very boring. A lot of the game also kind of feels duck taped together. The pacing is great, but the game just doesn't flow at all. One thing happens, then another thing happens, then one more thing happens, and then it ends.

I don't know. I'm not underwhelmed, I'm just...whelmed. It's the type of game that I'm not going to remember anything about in a week, which is something I certainly cannot say about any of the other recent Resident Evil games.

57. Alan Wake (XSX) | 14th May - 9hrs | ★★½ | I wanted to like this, I really did, but I just couldn't connect with it at all. Aside from the great atmosphere and the story (which...isn't even that good? What was all the fuss about?), the game has aged like milk. The voice acting is corny, the combat gets old after 30 minutes, 90% of the areas in the game look the exact same, and most of the encounters feel like they were designed to be frustrating. Maybe all of this was impressive in 2010, but it sure as hell isn't now.

This makes Control, which I loved, all the more impressive. The fact that Remedy went from this to that in just 10 years is awesome, and I absolutely cannot wait for what they put out next.

58. Mass Effect - Legendary Edition Version (PS5) | 17th May - 26hrs | ★★★★ | A solid start to the trilogy. While legendary edition does improve a few things like the Mako's handling as well as a lot of the character models, it cannot hide the fact that it was a game that was released in 2007. It's still very, very janky, especially compared to its sequels. Still, I had a blast. Pretty much everything regarding the story and characters is still fantastic. This game feels like home.

59. Mass Effect 2 - Legendary Edition Version (PS5) | 21st May - 40hrs | ★★★★ | It's definitely interesting playing this game after knowing what happens in ME3. I appreciated some things a lot more this time around like the focus on characters and the general side-questy vibe of the game, and I certainly appreciated some things a lot less this time around, like the story taking a backseat and the removal of 90% of the RPG mechanics. The final mission is still fantastic, though.

60. Mass Effect 3 - Legendary Edition Version (PS5) | 25th May - 34hrs | ★★★½ | A good ending to fantastic trilogy. Wrapping up a trilogy is never an easy feat, and it legitimately feels like they did the best they could...most of the time. It's not perfect and there's a bunch of hard misses here, but I do feel like the game gets ragged on more than it deserves. A lot of what's in this game should've been in ME2, but it is what it is. It seems like the next game in the franchise will continue the story, so maybe that helped me accept it for what it is this time around.

X. Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS5) | 25th May - 100hrs | ★★★★ | A really, really solid collection. The amount of effort put into improving ME1 was impressive (it might've even made it my favorite game in the franchise?), but I would've loved to see improvements made to ME2 and ME3 that went beyond texture improvements and bug fixes.

61. New Pokémon Snap (Switch) | 29th May - 9.5hrs | ★★★ | I mean, it's Pokemon Snap. Less charming and less fun, but it's Pokemon Snap. This feels like a game that could've come out in 2000, a year after the original. That's both a compliment and a criticism.
June - 6 Games
62. Narita Boy (XSX) | 1st June - 8hrs | ★★★ | I was initially surprised at the mostly negative/medicore reception the game got, but as I progressed through the game, I started understanding why. The back half of the game really drags. I liked the aesthetic though, and the story's actually pretty interesting. They needed to tighten up the platforming a little, because it never felt good.

63. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (PS5) | 18th June - 14hrs | ★★★★½ | Easily the best Ratchet & Clank since A Crack in Time. Doesn't necessarily do anything new, but it pretty much perfects the formula. It looks absolutely insane, too. It's just an extremely well made video game.

It is a bit on the short and easy side, but it honestly feels like a complete, tight experience so I really can't be mad at that.

64. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (PS5) | 20th June - 25hrs | ★★★★ | This is probably one of the best stealth games ever made, at least mechanically. I do think it's a little too difficult at times, but it only felt unfair once or twice so I can't judge it too harshly. I didn't care for the story or characters, but I will admit that I was just not in the mood for that type of story while playing the game, so it could have a lot to do with that. Other than that, I think the game's almost perfect, and I don't say that lightly.

I also played it on console and while the controls felt fine, the game was very much meant to be played with KB/M. Not everything translated well, I feel.

65. Carto (XSX) | 20th June - 4hrs | ★★½ | Cute aesthetic and charming writing aside, this did nothing for me. When it wasn't frustrating me with puzzles that were sometimes either too vague or made no sense, it was boring me. I do think that some of the puzzles had creative solutions, but the main gimmick of the game got old quick. A shame, because I genuinely loved how cozy the game felt.

66. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS5) | June 28th - 24hrs | ★★★★½ | Just as good as it was two years ago. I still think it's an absolute miracle that we got this game while the Star Wars license was still imprisoned at EA's headquarters.

67. Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS5) | June 29th - 85hrs | ★★★★ | Definitely my favorite Yakuza game out of the ones I've played. The combat system feels a little half-baked, but still good for a first attempt. This is also the first time where I felt like the story didn't drag at parts, and I genuinely like most of the cast. Looking forward to Yakuza 8!
July - 12 Games
68. A Hat in Time (PS5) | July 2nd - 8hrs | ★★★★ | Amateur aesthetic aside, A Hat in Time is a wonderful 3D platformer that just oozes charm and controls like a dream. It is a bit on the short side, and chapter 3 is really meh especially when compared to what came before it and after it, but it's still an overall really fun time.

69. A Hat in Time: Seal the Deal (PS5) | July 3rd - 2.5hrs | ★★★½ | Aside from an unfortunate second act, this was pretty good! Death Wish challenges are also great, but I wish they'd toned down the difficulty when it came to the bosses just a tiny bit, because they dip into unfair territory.

70. A Hat in Time: Nyakuza Metro (PS5) | July 3rd - 2.5hrs | ★★★½ | Probably the most interesting area in the entire game and the most aesthetically pleasing to look at, which makes it even more unfortunate that you spend most of it starting at weird cat train things. Still, if this a sign of things to come from Gears for Breakfast, I'm excited.

71. Deepest Sword (PC) | July 8th - 0.5hrs | ★★ | I didn't know this was going to be one of those rage games, but I managed to beat it so I guess it wasn't that bad. I also had no idea that it was going to be an elaborate sex joke.

72. Boomerang X (PC) | July 12th - 2.5hrs | ★★★★ | If I could describe this game with one word, it'd be the word tight. Tight controls, tight gameplay, tight pacing, tight level design, tight length. My only issues with it were the fact that it was really short and it being really easy aside from the final few encounters. I also had some weird frame pacing/stuttering issues but I'm not sure if it's the game's fault or not.

73. Symphonia (PC) | July 13th - 0.5hrs | ★★★ | Extremely polished platformer with absolutely gorgeous art, I just wish it were longer.

74. The World Ends With You: Final Remix (Switch) | July 18th - 13hrs | ★★★ | Yet another game added to my personal "I enjoyed this a lot more when I was a kid" list.

Issues with the port (like the butchered combat) aside, I just didn't gel with the game this time around. I kinda couldn't stand any of the characters? The writing is very 2007, which has a certain charm to it, but it mostly just irritated me. I found the story to be meh too, but it might just be because I knew what was in store going in.

The music's still great though! And I'm still excited for Neo.

75. Psychonauts (XSX) | July 20th - 7.5hrs | ★★★½ | The most creative, charming 3D platformer out there, even 16 years later. Sadly, the platforming itself hasn't aged well, and the game's finale is still a disappointing mess. I'm glad I replayed this though, and still insanely excited for Psychonauts 2.

76. Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin (Quest 2 - Link) | July 20th - 1.5hrs | ★★★ | This was cute! A little light on content though, especially for the asking price. Feels like something that could've been released shortly before Psychonauts 2 for like, $5 or $10.

77. Death's Door (XSX) | July 22nd - 7.5hrs | ★★★★ | An extremely well made, polished Zelda-like. It does lose a little bit of steam towards the end, but never so much that it feels like a drag. I just wish there was a little bit more of...everything? More bosses, more dungeons, more areas etc.

The lack of a map is the most puzzling design decision though. It legitimately adds nothing but frustration, especially since the first/hub area has a lot of similar looking architecture, so you just end up feeling lost most of the time.

78. The Pathless (PS5) | July 26th - 10hrs | ★★★½ | This is probably one of my least favorite Journey-like games (if you can even categorize it as one of those games), but I appreciate what it tries to do. I really disliked pretty much everything that had to do with the baddies. The main villain is a walking trope, the boss fights are weak and repetitive (another fireball attack? groundbreaking) and the stealth sequences are just outright boring. Another disappointment was, surprisingly, the soundtrack. Aside from a couple of standout tracks, it was kind of one-note. I expected a lot more from Austin Wintory.

The traversal system, however, I loved, especially after everything was unlocked. I also really liked how exploration was handled. It was always fun, even if most of the areas looked the same. The puzzles were also pretty neat, I just wish they were a little more varied.

There's a lot to like and dislike here, but I ultimately enjoyed the game, it just wasn't what I was expecting.

79. The Darkside Detective (PC) | July 31st - 4hrs | ★★★ | This was a cute little point and click game! It's pretty easy, but it was nice to finally play one of these games without having to follow a guide. Decent art and music, too.
August - 19 Games
80. The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures (Switch) | August 3rd - 27hrs | ★★★½ | It doesn't surprise me to hear that this game had a mixed reception when it first came out in Japan in 2015, because I most certainly did not vibe with it as much as a lot of people did and do. The 6 years of waiting undoubtedly did not help.

I'll start off by saying that the presentation is excellent. The series' transition to 3D was incredible, but this game truly takes it to the next level. The animations are better than ever, and the Dance of Deduction sequences are beautiful to look at. The game's cast is also fantastic, and I'd go as far as to say this is probably the best AA ensemble we've had yet. The music's also incredible, but it's Ace Attorney, so what else is new?

Due to some genuinely interesting design decisions that were made, all of the cases in this game, imo, suffer from severe pacing issues, in addition to some of the mysteries just not being all that interesting. The first and second cases are decent but go on for far too long, the third case is solid but doesn't reach the heights of some of the other cases in the franchise, the fourth case is an absolute bore and the fifth case is interesting, but not interesting enough for it to go on as long as it did. Again, none of them are outright bad (There aren't any Turnabout Big Tops or Turnabout Serenades here), their pacing is just really, really off.

I'm not going to jump into GAA2 immediately (the thought of playing two Ace Attorney games back to back sounds exhausting), but I've heard it pretty much fixes all the issues in this one and is one of the best games in the franchise, so I'm looking forward to it.

81. Psychonauts (PS5) | August 7th - 12.5 hrs | ★★★½ | Second playthrough for Game Club! Shockingly, I feel the exact same way I felt about it 18 days ago. Crazy! I 100%ed it this time around though, and one thing I hope they fix in the sequel is some the placement of the collectibles, because GOOD LORD.

82. Omno (XSX) | August 8th - 4hrs | ★★★ | A short, chill puzzle platformer that doesn't really do anything special. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I also don't regret playing it.

83. Dodgeball Academia (XSX) | August 9th - 7.5hrs | ★★★½ | This was a cute little RPG! Combat was fun and never got old, and the art style is really cute. I will say, one of my biggest pet peeves is buggy achievements, and I unfortunately ran into some here. Otherwise, it was a fun time.

84. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (XSX) | August 14th - 9hrs | ★★½ | One of the most revolutionary games ever made. Also a chore to get through.

85. Halo 2: Anniversary (XSX) | August 16th - 7.5hrs | ★★½ | This is my first time playing through the franchise and…do all Halo games shit the bed in their back halves? Because I'm starting to notice a pattern.

86. Halo 3 (XSX) | August 17th - 6.5hrs | ★★★ | My favorite Halo campaign so far. Short, sweet and doesn't drag at all, which is something I can't say about Halo 1 & 2's campaigns. Story's a little weaker than 2's, but it's an improvement across the board other than that.

87. Halo 3: ODST (XSX) | August 17th - 3.5hrs | ★★★ | Well, this was not what I expected. I'm playing through the franchise for the first time, and I had absolutely no idea that ODST was some weird film noir experiment. I think it works (I really love the atmosphere during the sections where you roam around the city) but not always. I think a lot of the game hinges on the characters which is an issue, since all of them are walking stereotypes and have dialogue that I don't think was considered passable in 2010. Still, this was probably my favorite Halo experience so far, and knowing the rest of the franchise doesn't take risks like these kind of bums me out.

88. Halo: Reach (XSX) | August 18th - 7hrs | ★★★ | This was alright. I can definitely see why this is a lot of people's favorite Halo game, but I don't think it's mine. Maybe it's because I kept comparing it to Rogue One (which is my favorite Star Wars movie) constantly and it was falling short. Gameplay was fun though! Yay for jetpacks!

89. Halo 4 (XSX) | August 19th - 5hrs | ★★★ | This was alright. Not bad for a first attempt.

X. Halo: The Master Chief Collection (XSX) | August 19th - 38.5hrs | ★★★★ | Even though I didn't love any of the games in this collection, I appreciate the insane amount of work that was clearly put into it.

90. Halo 5: Guardians (XSX) | August 20th - 5.5hrs | ★★★ | Not great, but not nearly as bad as everyone says it is. The campaign was fine, the characters were fine, the writing was shaky, the graphics were pretty. I'd describe every single Halo game I've played that exact same way. Maybe the multiplayer is a big part of why people dislike this, I don't know.

91. Quantum Break (XSX) | August 21st - 7hrs | ★★★½ | Had a much better time with this compared to Alan Wake. The gameplay's fun, the story's engaging (even if it fizzles out by the end), and the performances are good. The execution of the live action stuff wasn't great, but I still admire it greatly and I wish more games did this type of stuff (I believe Telltale was going to start doing it before they went under). I still think Control is the best game in this "trilogy," but I had a pretty good time with this. I don't understand the hate it gets at all.

92. Marvel's Avengers: Black Panther - War for Wakanda (PS5) | August 22nd - 3hrs | ★★½ | The best Avengers DLC by far and very clearly the one Crystal Dynamics worked the hardest on. It doesn't fix any of the issues that plagued the base game however, and I don't think it could've.

93. Control (PS5) | August 25th - 14hrs | ★★★★ | Still a really, really great game. The Oldest House is still one of my favorite video game settings ever, and the gameplay's every bit as good as it was. The story's still absolutely thrilling as well.

94. Control: The Foundation (PS5) | August 26th - 7hrs | ★★★ | The setting's great (even if all the areas look a bit samey) and the story developments are intriguing. The new abilities, however, are kind of disappointing, and the new Hiss Sharpened are interesting to fight, but are too bullet spongey for my taste. Still, this is a fun, well made expansion.

95. Control: AWE (PS5) | August 27th - 5.5hrs | ★★½ | [INSERT MCU JOKE HERE]. I wasn't expecting a glorified Alan Wake 2 teaser. This is the piece of content I was most excited to play, and I'm kinda underwhelmed. It was fine.

96. Psychonauts 2 (XSX) | August 30th - 24hrs | ★★★★½ | Double Fine as a company holds a very special place in my heart, and that's due to Double Fine Adventure. When Psychonauts 2's credits were rolling, I was getting a little teary eyed, because I was recognizing a bunch of names. Names like Lee Petty, Anna Kipnis, Ray Crook and many more. It's weird (and stupid), but I've developed sort of a special connection with the team due to that documentary series. I've been a fan of most their games (even games like Broken Age, which people seem to not like), but they've always struggled either commercially or critically, and you can tell how much of a toll it took on the team. Every single game they've made had an incredible amount of heart and soul poured into it, but something was always off. They've never managed to make that game. they've never managed to make it. It feels so fucking satisfying to say that they've finally made that game. From beginning to end, Psychonauts 2 is a joyous, wonderful experience that's immensely creative, that feels great, that has excellent writing that tackles some really serious subjects with a great level of finesse, and that looks absolutely gorgeous. Psychonauts 2 is it.

That's not to say it's flawless or perfect. The combat is janky and feels extremely unpolished, and the game sadly highlights it by constantly throwing you into combat sequences that are just never fun. I also found the final level a bit underwhelming. Nothing on the level of Meat Circus, just a bit disappointing. The back half of the game in general, while still fantastic, fails to live up to the front half in my opinion. Also, the ending is so insanely abrupt that I legitimately thought I accidentally skipped a cutscene.

That aside, it's an incredible game. I'm so, so happy for the team.

97. Twelve Minutes (XSX) | August 31st - 3hrs | ★★½ | I really, really wanted to love this game, but it's kind of a hot mess. A interesting hot mess, but a hot mess.

I like the main gimmick. It's a fun time loop game. The mechanics are there, and they're executed well. They're not the issue. The issue is that the narrative isn't one worth unraveling, and that's a big no-no for a game like this. Aside from the fact that it hits you with a ridiculous unearned twist straight out of a soap opera at the end, it just...really isn't interesting at all? It's all just so bland.

This game was okay ultimately, but the whole thing just feels like a missed opportunity. It feels like they could've done so much more.
September- 9 Games
98. The Forgotten City (PS5) | Sep 3rd - 8hrs | ★★★★ | Playing this right after 12 Minutes was interesting because I think this game perfectly understands what makes time loop puzzle games so interesting and engaging while that game doesn't. I'll just leave it at that since I can't delve into my thoughts without spoilers.

I do wish there was a little more actual puzzle solving than there was, but it was still a fun time.

99. Ryse: Son of Rome (XSX) | Sep 4th - 7hrs | ★½ | Well, this was as bad as everyone said it was. Absolutely no redeeming qualities aside from visuals that don't even look that good anymore. I legitimately feel like I just wasted 7 hours of my life.

100. Golf Club: Wasteland (Switch) | Sep 4th - 1.5hrs | ★★★ | This was a cute little golf game! Went into it not knowing anything about the narrative and was pleasantly surprised!

101. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (XSX) | Sep 9th - 6hrs | ★★★ | This game feels like a parody, and the fact that it seemingly isn't lowkey makes it even better. It's campy as hell. Surprisingly challenging, too! Atrocious final boss aside, it was a fun time.

102. WarioWare: Get It Together! (Switch) | Sep 10th - 2hrs | ★★★ | It's WarioWare. I really don't know what else to say other than that. The new gimmick is probably my least favorite in the franchise, but it's…fine. The mini games are still funny. And good. And creative.

I don't know. It's WarioWare. I got exactly what I was expecting out of it.

103. Life is Strange: True Colors (PS5) | Sep 11th - 10hrs | ★★★★ | I don't think this game recaptures the magic of Life is Strange (or even Before the Storm), but I had a much better time with it than Life is Strange 2. It's a quintessential Life is Strange game as well! Great atmosphere (Haven Springs is no Arcadia Bay, but it's great), good characters (Again, Alex, Steph, and Ryan are no Max and Chloe, but they're great), spotty writing and voice acting that comes off as incredibly endearing, a strong third chapter/episode, and a rushed ending! It has it all! Well, it has it all except for one thing.

In the opening minutes of the first episode of Life is Strange, Max puts in her earbuds after leaving class. Everything goes silent for a few seconds, Square Enix's and Dontnod's logos pop up on the left side of the screen, and Syd Matters' "To All of You" starts playing. You regain control of Max and start roaming the halls of Blackwell Academy as the rest of the song plays in the background. This is still one of my favorite moments in video games ever. It instantly transports you into that world through the use of music, and the rest of the game's (and the franchise's) usage of licensed music is just as masterful.

These moments are few and far between in True Colors, and they don't hit nearly as hard. At times, the game makes it so you have to go out of your way to hear some licensed music. Out of all my issues with the game, this is the most crushing, disappointing one.

Other than that, it's pretty good. I'm glad these games are still being made.

104. DEATHLOOP (PS5) | Sep 18th - 22hrs | ★★★★½ | Less of an 0451 immersive sim like some of Arkane's other games, but it's just as incredible. Absolutely fantastic level design, gorgeous environments with crazy attention to detail, extremely fun gameplay, and just all-around excellence. It's an Arkane game through and through, and that's the best compliment I could give it. It's not perfect (The AI leaves a lot to be desired, the ending is disappointing and Julianna's invasions get a little old towards the end), but my God, what an incredible take on the time loop puzzle-solving genre. I would put it just below Outer Wilds in terms of how well the whole thing was executed. It's that good.

105. Flynn: Son of Crimson (XSX) | Sep 23rd - 8hrs | ★★★ | This was fine? It's a perfectly good video game, I just...feel like I've played something just like it a hundred times already. It's very pretty and the music's good, I just need a little bit more than that.

106. Hoa (Switch) | Sep 25th - 3hrs | ★★ | This game is absolutely gorgeous and...not a lot else. There's nothing wrong with basic platforming but this, to put it bluntly, was just boring. There's also no reason for it to run the way it does on Switch.
October - 10 Games
107. Life is Strange: Wavelengths (PS5) | Oct 1st - 3.5hrs | ★★★½ | I don't think this was as strong as Before the Storm's Farewell, but I still enjoyed it. There was absolutely no reason for it to go on as long as it did, though.

108. TOEM (Switch) | Oct 9th - 4hrs | ★★★★ | This game feels like a warm hug. Extremely cozy, incredibly charming, and fun to play as well! I wish some of the objectives were a little less vague, but it's great other than that.

109. Donkey Kong (NES) | Oct 13th - 0.25hrs | ★½ | It's Donkey Kong.

110. Metroid Dread (Switch) | Oct 15th - 11hrs | ★★★★½ | I want to say it's a return to form for the franchise, but I've liked pretty much every single 2D Metroid so it wouldn't be a completely accurate statement. Instead, I view it as MercurySteam applying what they learned while making Samus Returns and Mirror of Fate (which I've only played a little of) to create a truly fantastic Metroid experience. Samus controls like a dream, the boss fights are challenging but never brutal, and the Metroidvania of it all is great. If I have to criticize something, it'd be the visuals and the music, both of which I found kind of underwhelming. Other than that, this is really great. I'm really happy with the direction Metroid seems to be heading in.

Some of the things you have to do with the Speed Booster ability in order to get collectibles almost made me dock half a star, though.

111. Overboard! (Switch) | Oct 19th - 3hrs | ★★★ | This was kind of disappointing. The idea of a reverse murder mystery game is genius, but the execution misses far more than it hits. Even the writing isn't as good as it is in other Inkle games. Heaven's Vault was their magnum opus (imo), and following it up was always going to be hard, but I was expecting more.

112. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania (Switch) | Oct 21st - 7.5hrs | ★★★½ | Monkey Ball is good again! It's certainly not perfect, though. The new physics are fine, but the levels aren't designed around them so a lot of the stages end up being tougher than originally intended. Other than that, it's great!

113. Ōkami HD (XSX) | Oct 24th - 50hrs | ★★★★★ | What a journey. Still remains one of my favorite games of all time. Some of it hasn't aged well (Issun, in particular, I found to be a little more grating this time around) but the rest of the game makes up for it. Constantly creative, incredibly beautiful to look at, extremely fun to play, and has excellent pacing. The finale still absolutely hits.

This is my favorite Zelda game, hands down.

114. Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (PC) | Oct 28th - 10hrs | ★★★★½ | When Morphogenetic Sorrow starts playing, I cry.

Still an incredible experience. Virtue's Last Reward is still king, but it absolutely would not have been as good as it was had it not been for this game. I forgot how much they absolutely nailed the first time around.

115. GNOG (PC) | Oct 29th - 1.5hrs | ★★★½ | This was a cute little puzzle game! Probably would've been even more fun in VR, but I still had a good time.

116. Boa Retina (PC) | Oct 29th - 0.25hrs | ★½ | I hate that I'm giving this such a low score because the message is really powerful, but the writing and pretty much everything else leave a lot to be desired.

117. Sable (XSX) | Oct 31st - 10hrs | ★★★★ | Had a great time with this! Performace was choppy on Series X and the game, in general, has a lot of technical issues, but the beautiful aesthetic, soothing music, wonderful dialogue and surprisingly fun gameplay loop more than make up for it. It's Breath of the Wild without all of the nonsense (uncomfortable combat, weapon degradation, weather conditions, etc.)
November - 9 Games
118. Echo Generation (XSX) | Nov 1st - 10hrs | ★★★½ | This was good! A bit basic in the combat and story departments, but it's extremely beautiful and just really fun to play. I really wish there were more RPGs that have a playtime of ~10 hours, especially turn-based ones.

119. Unpacking (XSX) | Nov 3rd - 4hrs | ★★★½ | The most relaxing stress-inducing game I've ever played. Short and sweet, and absolutely doesn't overstay its welcome. Came at a time when I absolutely needed it.

120. Child of Light (Switch) | Nov 8th - 9hrs | ★★★★ | Still a great, charming little RPG. Played on Hard/Expert this time around and appreciated the combat system a lot more. The best part of the game is still the magnificent soundtrack, though!

121. The Gardens Between (XSX) | Nov 9th - 2hs | ★★½ | This game's two hours long but took me FIVE days to finish. The concept's great on paper and there are a few clever puzzles in the game, but my GOD is it a chore to play. It's extremely slow to the point where it exhaustes you extremely quickly.

122. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (PS5) | Nov 17th - 23hrs | ★★★★ | This reminded me a lot of Jedi Fallen Order. Not gameplay-wise (JFO is vastly superior in that regard), but in terms of how much heart the game has. It was a really fun time. Strong writing, great soundtrack, fantastic performances, and surprisingly good visuals. Sadly wasn't a big fan of the combat system though. It's fine, but gets insanely old towards the end of the game.

GOD I miss linear, set-piece heavy AAA games.

123. Call of the Sea (XSX) | Nov 18th - 3.5hrs | ★★★ | This was okay. The story starts off well but completely goes off the rails towards the end and the difficulty of the puzzles is all over the place (the most difficult puzzle in the game is in chapter 3, the halfway point of the game), but I still had an enjoyable time.

I'm probably not going to remember anything from this game tomorrow.

124. Battletoads - Rare Replay (XSX) | Nov 19th - 3hrs | ★½ | The fact that this is considered a classic...I'm never trusting the gaming opinions of people who grew up in the 90's ever again.

125. Inscryption (PC) | Nov 23rd - 9hrs | ★★★★ | Really hard to talk about this without spoiling anything, so I'll just say that I was extremely impressed by the amount of creativity on display. The story was great as well, but I'm not a huge fan of the way it's told, especially towards the end of the game.

126. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond (Switch) | Nov 26th - 19hrs | ★★★ | The most "well, it's Pokemon"-y Pokémon game in recent memory. Fun, safe, kinda bland and soulless. As a remake, it's…fine?

I hope the Gen 5 games are treated better.
December - 20 Games
127. Breath of Death VII (PC) | Dec 2nd - 3hrs | ★★½ | This was a cute little game! Nothing special, but a fun way to waste a few hours.

128. Cthulhu Saves the World (PC) | Dec 3rd - 6.5hrs | ★★★ | Better than Breath of Death, but only slightly. Makes the jump to Cosmic Star Heroine a lot more impressive.

129. Cthulhu Saves Christmas (PC) | Dec 4th - 3hrs | ★★★ | Much like most of Zeboyd's other games, this was cute, but nothing special. Easily the best combat system though, which seems to be directly lifted from Cosmic Star Heroine. Looking forward to their next game!

130. Shin Megami Tensei V (Switch) | Dec 7th - 32hrs | ★★★½ | As it stands right now, this is probably one of my least favorite mainline SMT games. This is definitely one of Atlus' most ambitious games, and I commend them for trying new things, but almost none of what was new to the franchise worked for me.

Gone are most of the tight, incredibly atmospheric areas and are instead replaced with what are frequently bland, rudimentary open areas that aren't even close to being fun to explore. I don't think any SMT game has incredible level design, but my god were the areas always dripping with atmosphere. Even SMTIV, a game that was very clearly held back in every way by the system it was on, managed to have an insanely bleak, oppressive vibe. There's maybe...one small dungeon in SMTV that feels that way? This was without a doubt the most disappointing thing about the game for me.

The story and characters are also a miss this time around. Now, mainline SMT has never really been about the plot or characters, but they were never this…bland. I in no way, shape, or form gave a shit about any of the characters at any point in the entire game, and I absolutely cannot say that for almost every game since Nocturne. The general premise of the story is also uninteresting. A giant space void is about to swallow the earth! A group of Samurai in a fictional eastern kingdom follow a mysterious figure and discover something that completely flips their world upside down! ...a group of high school students explore a tunnel and accidentally end up somewhere where angels and demons are fighting. How riveting. I don't know, none of it worked for me.

Aside from that, It's SMT. The combat system is still as fantastic as ever (with a few changes that I personally didn't mind), the music is still great, and the character and enemy designs are fantastic. It did seem to lack the usual Atlus polish since I can't remember the last time I played an Atlus game that ran this badly.

A lot of people seem to like this game so maybe it's just me. I still liked a lot of it, but I found it to be a crushing disappointment.

131. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan (XSX) | Dec 7th - 4hrs | ★★½ | This was rough. Still love the intensity of knowing that anyone could die at any moment, but this was nowhere near as gripping as Until Dawn. Every single character is unlikable, and the story is a hot mess. I've heard Little Hope and House of Ashes are a lot better, so I'm still definitely going to check them out if they ever land on Game Pass.

132. Shivah (iOS) | Dec 10th - 2hrs | ★★★ | Really enjoyed this! Short and sweet. Really unique too, can't say I know of many point & click games starting a rabbi.

133. Halo Infinite (XSX) | Dec 12th - 17hrs | ★★★ | The gameplay's fantastic and the addition of the grappling hook will make going back to the older games really, really hard. Everything else, however, I found to be bland and uninspired. The story's kind of a mess, the villains are one-dimensional cardboard cutouts, and the open world is...there. I didn't have high expectations, but I'm still kinda disappointed.

134. The Blackwell Legacy (PC) | Dec 13th - 3hrs | ★★½ | This was fine? Liked Shiva a lot more but there's a lot of potential here. I will most definitely play the rest of the franchise.

135. Blackwell Unbound (PC) | Dec 14th - 2.5hrs | ★★½ | Weakest Wadjet game by far (so far), but still a fun way to spend a few hours. I'm really liking these short, not-too-complicated point & click games.

136. The Blackwell Convergence (PC) | Dec 14th - 1.5hs | ★★½ | Without a doubt the easiest and shortest game in the series thus far. It was alright.

137. The Gunk (XSX) | Dec 17th - 6hrs | ★★★½ | This was a nice little game! Nothing special, but still a fun time. The gameplay's pretty basic but it gets the job done, and the game doesn't overstay its welcome.

This, in my opinion, is a perfect Game Pass game.

138. The Blackwell Deception (PC) | Dec 18th - 2.5hrs | ★★★ | Probably the best game in the franchise so far, thanks to a stronger overarching narrative. The puzzles are also significantly more elaborate this time around, which was nice.

139. The Blackwell Epiphany (PC) | Dec 18th - 3hrs | ★★★ | Easily the best game in the franchise. It has the best story, best writing, best mood and best puzzles. Nothing incredible, but it's a fitting end to the series.

140. Gears of War 2 (XSX) | Dec 21st - 9.5hrs | ★★ | I have absolutely no idea how a good amount of people consider this to be the best Gears game. The writing is atrocious, the environments are universally bland and ugly, and the level design is mediocre at best. It's nowhere near as campy as the first, which makes all the bad parts stick out more.

141. Gears of War 3 (XSX) | Dec 22nd - 9hrs | ★★★ | Colors? In a Gears of War game?? Say it ain't so!

Easily my favorite Gears game so far. The writing is still terrible and the plot is still cheeks, but I had a much better time with this one than the previous two. Seems like this awful story arc has ended so I'm hoping for something a little better in the next few games.

142. Gears of War: Judgement (XSX) | Dec 22nd - 5.5hrs | ★★½ | Liked this less than 3. The way the story is told is neat but the plot itself isn't great. It's fine gameplay-wise but some of the mission design was a little weird. Out of all of the games so far, this one felt like it was made to be played in co-op the most.

143. Gears of War 4 (XSX) | Dec 24th - 9hrs | ★★★½ | Easily my favorite game in the franchise so far. I understand why it's disliked by fans of the franchise though, it didn't really feel like Gears (which might be why I liked it as much as I did). Absolutely gorgeous, too. The jump from the drab looking original trilogy to this was insane.

144. Gears 5 (XSX) | Dec 26th - 11hrs | ★★★★ | Easily my favorite Gears game. An insane jump in quality in almost every aspect, even from Gears 4. Suffering through the older games to get to this was definitely worth it.

145. Gears 5: Hivebusters (XSX) | Dec 27th - 3hrs | ★★★★ | Wish this was longer, but the short playtime and tight pacing are probably why it's so good. Really liked the cast here, which is something I can't say for almost every other game in the franchise. The setting's also pretty neat and fely a breath of fresh air for the franchise.

146. Mirror's Edge Catalyst (PS5) | Dec 31st - 30hrs | ★★★½ | Yes, there are too many collectibles and yes, there was no reason for this game to be open world. Yes, the story's kind of a mess but...my God does it play like an absolute dream.
1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (XSX) | 1st January - 29hrs | 4.5/5
2. Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (XSX) | 3rd January - 7.5hrs | 4/5
3. My Friend Pedro (XSX) | 3rd January - 3hrs | 2.5/5
4. Forza Horizon 4 (XSX) | 4th January - 10hrs | 3.5/5

Thought I'd play more games last year lol. Hopefully I can finish this years!

7/52 COMPLETED
2 Platinums!

Immortals Fenyx Rising (PS4) -51 hours COMPLETED 1 (FEB) PLATINUMED

Platinum obtained for this one!

I really enjoyed my time with this game, sure you can feel the inspirations it got from BoTW but I think Immortals has established it's own identity, just enough to differentiate itself from it's inspirator. Some of it's defining differences is that I find the combat here more fun and with the ability to adjust button layouts, more enjoyable. Then there's vast amount of varied puzzles throughout the game, I have not found one repeating puzzle or even one I didn't get an unsatisfying feeling once I complete the puzzles, I found them damn fun to problem solve, really have to pay attention to your surroundings until you go OHHH THAT'S HOW. Also helps that some puzzles that include weights can be solved by using not just the weighted cubes but the surrounding breakable rocks or trees heh.

The story is fine, just about as enjoyable BoTW's, meaning I didn't really care much about either of them. I also didn't really enjoy the annoying prattling of the two narrators but I will admit, there are times when I do pay attention to whatever they're bickering about some interesting story but it's only a handful of time in 50 hours playthrough. If I had the choice, I would've turned the narration entirely off.

Visually, it's ok as open world beautifulness goes, I liked that while voice and face customizations were rather lacking, there's at least a good amount of varied armor and skins to mess around with. There's not much write home about with regards to it's soundtrack, besides the main theme being pretty solid.

Had I played this last year, it'd easily be a top 5 game. Solid 4/5, would love a sequel.

Little Nightmares II (PS4) - 9 hours COMPLETED 2 (FMAR) PLATINUMED
Second platinum!

As a sequel to the first Little Nightmares(which I loved stepping into for the first time the), it succeeds in bringing the same sense of dread and awe that is so uniquely crafted by Tarsier. A world that's horrific and cruel to little creatures, never felt so enjoyable to explore around in. I especially loved how intuitive the world relayed it's story and puzzles. On the other hand, I didn't really like the instakill deaths that were so out of nowhere but that balances with instant loading, still annoying though. I'm all in for DLC or LN3 cause this world still remains an intriguing yet destitute world and lore to learn about.

Greedfall (PS4) - 43 hours COMPLETED 3 (MAR)
This was a pretty decent WRPG and interesting take and concept being done story wise. The crew you have don't really feel like a crew but more like tools to me that I could use to progress side stories/main missions, the combat is all right and easily broken by the gun and stop magic. Visually it's fine. Overall it gave me a Witcher 3 lite vibe but by the halfway point of the game, I just wanted to get it over with.

2.5/5.

Gorogoa (PS4) - 3 hours COMPLETED 1 (APRIL)
Holy crappola, this game is amazing, unique and such a compellingly and intuitively mind breaking puzzler, I can see why this was talked about during the year it launched. There's so much cleverness to it's puzzle design and the use of "images" is just simply brilliant.

5/5, just absolutely loved this!

Titanfall 2(PS4) - 9 hours COMPLETED 1 (MAY)
Man, this SP is still as fun as ever. I love the variety of slight change ups throughout the campaign and the level designs that ensure that you're having fun shooting and jumping around like cat hyped up on catnip. Sure not as lively as before but the MP lives on and is just as fun too!

4.5/5 Play this game!

Nier Replicant 1.5(PS4) - 40 hours COMPLETED 1 (JUN)
As great as visual uparades go, this one is decent. Sadly can't say the same for the combat and janky gameplay. You can see the roots of ideas that are executed much better in Nier: Automata. The soundtrack however is either better or just as good Automata's though. The additional mermaid is solid Yoko Taro writing and the new ending is pretty neat and leaves on slight bit hopeful for the crew.

3/5

Resident Evil: Village (PS4) - 11 hours COMPLETED 1 (JUN)
Really solid and fun campaign. Grew to like Ethan's corniness here and his reaction is top 90's action hero lines lol and the story was fine and pretty straightforward. Loved the shooting in here and crafting is a nice addition that feels balanced enough without breaking the horror roots of the game. I'm disappointed that there's no gore like in RE2 and 3 remakes. Also very solid performance on OG PS4 plus looking visually great too.

4.5/5 a top 5 this year for sure.

Out of curiosity, I wanted to calculate my savings by playing so much on Game Pass. I used www.gg.deal to look up current best prices in official stores and all prices are the current days prices (2021-12-28) and almost all have winter sales discount on them. If I have played any game for less than two hours, I'll not count it since I count it as refunded.

Total cost of games played this year: $652
Total cost of games played this year (not on sale, adjusted to 30% higher prices): $932
Approximated actual spednings in 2021: $100
Savings made: $500-$800

1. Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight (PC) | 1st Jan - 3hrs | 2/5 : Just fine, wasn't hard, but was a bit short
2. Final Fantasy VII (Switch) | 1st Jan - 35hrs | 3/5 : First time finishing the game thanks to fast forward on the Switch. I started it in December and finished it up right at the new year. I don't think it has aged well, but I get why people like it
3. Immortals Fenyx Rising (PS5) | 4th Jan - 28hrs | 3.5/5 : Very fun, very funny. Got a bit repetitive, and the puzzles were a bit too easy, so I didn't end up clearing the entire island
4. Cloudpunk (PC) | 9th Jan - 28hrs | 3/5 : Looked amazing for what it was. I was surprised that I didn't get bored, and that I liked the characters. Story fell a bit flat at the end though
5. Trails of Cold Steel 3 (PS5) | 20th Jan - 55hrs | 2.5/5 : Holy shit can I complain about this game's story. It was a good Trails game when talking about gameplay, but the amount of hidden agendas and bullshit going on just annoyed me.
6. Umarangi Generation (PC) | 23rd Jan - 3hrs | 4/5 : Great game. Different and the scenes tell an interesting story about the world
7. Wintermoor Tactics Club (PC) | 24th Jan - 5hrs | 2/5 : Decent game, I just thought it'd be more like X-com and less like a "finish in these many moves" type of strategy game.
8. Spyro the Dragon (Reignited Trilogy) (PC) | 30th Jan - 6hrs | 4/5 : Great remaster, great game, nothing more to be said
9. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (Reignited Trilogy) (PC) | 31st Jan - 6hrs | 4.5/5 : Amazing remaster, my favorite Spyro
10. Spyro: Year of the Dragon (Reignited Trilogy) (PC) | 3rd Feb - 7 hours | 4/5 : Really good remaster, felt easier than the other two somehow
11. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch) | 15th Feb - 15 hours | 3/5 : I'm not sure if I should split these up, so I'm counting them as one. Not my favorite Mario, but Bowser's Fury was really good. Makes me excited for the next full Mario game
12. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox (PS5) | 20th Feb - 29 hours | 3/5 : First ever Ys game. Combat got stale after a bit, for sure not my favorite Falcom game, but it was still enjoyable. I don't know if I'll go back for any others
13. Persona 5 Strikers (PS5) | 28th Feb - 40 hours | 4/5 : Really good sequel. First musou style game I've played in ages, and it seems more like an action styled P5 instead. i still prefer the turn based combat, and this makes me want to play Royal again
14. A Hand With Many Fingers (PC) | 1st March - 2 hours | 1.5/5 : It was fine...I don't really have much to say about it. I liked the concept, but the material was boring
15. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory (PS5) | 3rd March - 10 hours | 3/5 : Not really into these type of games, but I like the music of Kingdom Hearts, so I enjoyed it for that.
16. Afterparty (PC) | 6th March - 7 hours | 2.5/5 : I was expecting Oxenfree, but this felt like a step back. Had funny parts, but was not anywhere near as engaging
17. Yakuza: Like a Dragon (PS5) | 20th March - 55 hours | 5/5 : Fucking fantastic. I didn't think I'd like the changes done but I prefer the new format and want it to stay like this for all future entries. The ending kinda fell off a bit with the story though.
18. Nuts (PC) | 21st March - 2.5 hours | 3/5 : It was fun trying to figure out where to put the cameras and following the squirrels around. I just thought the story would have gone to other places...
19. Mail Mole (Switch) | 25th March - 3 hours | 2/5 : It was a fun platformer, but wayyyyy too easy. Not a single enemy outside of the bosses
20. Super Mario Galaxy (Switch) | 29th March - 20 hours | 3/5 : I loved the concept, I loved the soundtrack, I loved the art design of the levels. I hate the controls. I have to imagine the controls were better on the Wii, because I had to auto-correct it all the time.
21. Disco Elysium (PC) | 12th April - 33 hours | 5/5 : Amazing game. The characters, the mystery, the storytelling are all great. One of my favorites for sure
22. Battle Chef Brigade (PC) | 15th April - 7 hours | 2.5/5 : Fun in the beginning, but becomes repetitive and kinda boring if the puzzles don't get your attention.
23. NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... (PS5) | 30th April - 35 hours | 4/5 : Side quests got real boring, the design decisions on how tog et the endings after B are...questionable, but it's really "fun" to play and get through the story. Make me want to play Automata again
24. New Pokémon Snap (Switch) | 8th May - 20 hours | 4/5 : While I miss evolutions, this is an improvement on the first game in every other way. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone interested
25. Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Mass Effect (PS5) | 16th May - 25 hours | 3.5/5 : My least favorite of the trilogy, but it's still a great game. I just wish we had more world exploration and lore exploration outside of the codex
26. Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Mass Effect 2 (PS5) | 22nd May - 30 hours | 4.5/5 : My favorite of the trilogy; the game still holds up, the squad is still the best, I got everything I wanted
27. Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Mass Effect 3 (PS5) | 29th May - 35 hours | 4/5 : The best playing of the three, and the citadel DLC makes up for most of my issues with it....except for the end
28. Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids (PS5) | 2nd June - 12 hours | 2.5/5 : I don't know...it didn't really feel much different from the main game. Comparing Odyssey's DLC to this probably colors my perception a bit
29. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (PS5) | 12th June - 15 hours | 4.5/5 : Looks great, plays great. One of my favorites franchises continue its run of having amazing games (ignore 2016)
30. Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Intermission DLC (PS5) | 14th June - 4.5 hours | 3.5/5 : It was good, even though I know nothing about Deepground.
31. Paradise Lost (PC) | 19th June - 4 hours | 1.5/5 : Boring. Crashed a bunch whenever I restarted the game.
July
32. Trails of Cold Steel 4 (PS5) | 4th July - 81hrs | 3/5 : Questions left unanswered, villains never get justice done to them, power of friendship. It annoys me so much and yet I'll probably keep playing the series just to see the end
33. Clawfish (PC) | 5th July - 0.5 hours | 4/5: Chill vibes, short game. I don't know why but it made me very comfortable, and I enjoyed it
34. Alba (PC) | 5th July - 2.5 hours | 4/5: Another short, comfortable game. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, and trying to find all the animals on the island
35. Titan Chaser (PC) | 6th July - 2.5 hours | 1.5/5: So buggy and didn't control well. I really liked the premise of the game (finding large titans) but it was so boring and bad
36. Halo Reach (PC) | 7th July - 8 hours | 3/5: Part of the Master Chief Collection, best Halo so far because...no Flood. I hate the Flood.
37. Halo (PC) | 9th July - 8 hours | 3/5: Part of the Master Chief Collection, still holds up pretty well, but it introduced the Flood. I hate the Flood.
38. Scarlet Nexus (PS5) | 18th July - 34 hours | 3.5/5: I was surprised how much I enjoyed the combat in this game, I expected it to be a bit more mindless. The story was ok, the side quests weren't good, but everything else was pretty good and made me finish off both main characters' stories.
39. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (PC) | 23rd July - 1.5 hours | 2.5/5: It's a fine game, but it's very simple, lots of "find me this item" fetch quests as the main game design
40. Death's Door (PC) | 25th July - 10 hours | 4/5: Great game. While it could use a map and explain some things a bit better, the gameplay was fun, the exploration was fun, the soundtrack was great, and the art style was cool. Bit easy so not a long game either
41. Beasts of Maravilla Island (PC) | 31st July - 1 hour | 1.5/5: How not to make a Pokemon Snap clone.
August
42. Good Morning Drifter (PC) | 7th August - 0.5 hours | 2/5: Fine little experience until it bugged out on me
43. Halo 2: Anniversary (PC) | 8th August - 9 hours | 3/5: I liked the cutscene upgrades, but I still hate the Flood
44. Halo 3: ODST (PC) | 11th August - 6 hours | 3/5: I cared more about the characters in this one than the others, so I consider this the second best Halo game I've played
45. Halo 3 (PC) | 13th August - 8 hours | 3/5: No worse and no better than Halo 2, I still hate the Flood
46. Halo 4 (PC) | 15th August - 7 hours | 3.5/5: Probably my favorite Halo game I've played, even though I didn't care for the main villain. Too bad Halo 5 won't be coming to the MCC, seems like this is where I stop
47. Assassin's Creed Valhalla: The Siege of Paris (PS5) | 20th August - 6 hours | 3/5: Better than the first DLC expansion, but these Valhalla DLCs pale in comparison to Odyssey's
48. Mirror's Edge (PC) | 22nd August - 4 hours | 4.5/5: Still one of my favorite games to play. The gameplay is a little janky at times, but it's so good in spite of that
49. How We Know We're Alive (PC) | 22nd August - 0.5 hours | 2/5: Boring, didn't get grabbed by the story at all
50. Psychonauts 2 (PS5) | 27th August - 15 hours | 4.5/5: GOTY contender, an improvement in almost every way from the original (I still think the side characters are better in the original).
51. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (PC) | 30th August - 9 hours | 3.5/5: I heard good things about this game. While I don't think I'm good at it, it was fun to play, even if I didn't care about the story.
52. The Endless Express (PC) | 30th August - 0.5 hours | 2.5/5: Janky (as it should be) but pretty interesting nonetheless.
September
53. Lake (PC) | 3rd September - 6.5hrs | 4/5 : A little jank, but was super relaxing to play, and it was just what I wanted from it
54. Pathfinder: Kingmaker (PC) | 18th September - 45hrs | 3/5 : I think PoE spoiled me, because this didn't play or look as good, and the story was forgettable
55. Costume Quest (PC) | 19th September - 5hrs | 3.5/5 : I had try to play this before but bounced off. Now, I found it actually enjoyable, if a little easy
56. Costumer Quest 2 (PC) | 20th September - 7.5 hours | 3/5 : Not as good as the first game, the costumes and story were weaker
57. Portal (PC) | 25th September - 4 hours | 4/5 : Replay, just felt like going back in and doing it again. Still great, still not sure why I can't get rid of the screen tearing
58. Night in the Woods (PC) | 27th September - 9.5 hours | 4/5 : Never beat it on PC, but bought it on there for some reason. Still great, felt like a good game to play during Fall
October
59. Lost Judgement (PS5) | 14th October - 41 hours | 4/5 : Much better gameplay and side quests than the first game. The school stuff took most of my time, but the main story felt weaker
60. Mario Kart DS (DS) | 21st October - 6 hours | 3/5 : Inoffensive I guess. It's Mario Kart, nothing really memorable about it
61. Metroid Dread (Switch) | 26th October - 10.5 hours | 4.5/5 : Great game, probably my favorite Metroid game I've played. Exploration is fun, and it makes me excited for a new 3D Metroid
62. Sonic Advance (GBA) | 31st October - 3 hours | 2.5/5 : Fine? Boring but it might just not have aged very well
November
63. Shin Megami Tensei V (Switch) | 19th November - 70 hours | 4/5 : Great gameplay (if you love turn based combat), great overworld exploration, and loved the fusions (like all SMT & Persona games). Shitty story
64. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (PS5) | 29th November - 17 hours | 4/5 : Really surprised me, but I found very few faults with the game. Combat, characters, story, art design - all great

Year #4

1. Parasite Eve [PSVita 01/03/2021]: What a good god damn game.
2. Super Mario Maker 2 [Switch 01/09/2021]: I think I would have liked the NSMB games overall if as much creativity went into those games as this game.
3. HW: Age of Calamity [Switch 01/11/2021]: I guess I understand where people who don't like this games big twist are coming from, but I have no reverence for BotW's plot so I had fun.
4. Scott Pilgrim [Switch 01/17/2021]: Even with cheating to max out your stats everything from the fire escape sequence onwards was just a slog. Game's pretty and sounds great which is pretty much why you play this game.
5. Yakuza 3 [PS5 01/24/2021]: With that I've played every Kiryu game. It's definitely the weakest of all of the games but it was still really fun.
6. Parappa the Rapper [PS4 02/04/2021]: That game is ass but the songs are still catchy.
7. River City Girls [PS4 02/11/2021]: Really fun, like most I went to this game after playing Scott Pilgrim.
8. Hitman 2 [PS4 02/11/2021]: Much like the first game the levels are really fun to explore, even if I feel no compulsion to replay them.
9. Act Raiser [SNES Mini 02/13/2021]: I really love the back and forth of the sim and Beat-em-up sections, but that endgame sucks.
10. Control [PS5 02/14/2021]: I think the premise is interesting but I think it's entirely wasted in execution because it's a 3rd person shooter.
11. Disaster Report 4 [PS4 02/16/2021]: That city's full of Assholes and I'm glad they're dead. Also glad my final choice was to do the finger guns.
12. Xenoblade: Definitive Edition [Switch 03/01/2021]: This game is amazing. Hopefully Future's connected will actually matter.
13. Monster Hunter Rise [Switch 03/27/2021]: I was nervous about them going back to the "old-style" of games and boy did this not alleviate my worries.
14. Friday Night Funkin' [Web 04/03/2021]: Not sure why a Newgrounds Rhythm game from 2003 was flooding my youtube feed, but it's a fun game.
15. Bravely Default II [Switch 04/04/2021]: While I enjoyed the game overall I feel the story left something to be desired and the battle system feels like a step down from the earlier games.
16. Kingdom Hearts II [PC 04/07/2021]: EGS Version Runs great. Still a GOAT game, can't wait for the modders to get the randomizer up and running.
17. Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S [Switch 04/08/2021]: Picross but Miku, not much to say.
18. NieR Replicant [PS4 05/05/2021]: Ending E is great but I feel like most of the additions and changes made to the game only served to make the overall experience more tedious.
19. New Pokemon Snap [Switch 05/06/2021]: A charming game but I think with the increased number of Pokemon and "poses" the game feels a lot more on rails and the Pokemon themselves feel less lifelike than the original game.
20. Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir [Switch 05/15/2021]: It's a compelling story but you can really feel its age.
21. Famicom Detective Club: The Girl who Stands Behind You [Switch 05/16/2021]: Same as above but slightly less obtuse with more going on.
22. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix: Randomized [PC 05/17/2021]: The Mad lads got it working and outside of some crashes its great.
23. Devil May Cry [Switch 05/22/2021]: It really is just Resident Evil with a jump button.
24. Devil May Cry 2 [Switch 05/26/2021]: One step forward two steps back.
25. Final Fantasy Adventure [Switch 05/27/2021]: That is a meaty but obtuse game.
26. Touhou: Luna Nights [Steam 06/04/2021]: How can anyone say no to Symphony of the night but playing as DIO.
27. Bloodborne [ps4: 06/04/2021]: CUMMMFPK.
28. Guilty Gear Strive [PS5 06/08/2021]: That was a nice send-off for Sol, gives me BBCF vibes.
29. FFVIIR: Intermission [PS5 06/10/2021]: That was a great 10 minute cutscene behind a 4-6 hour decent game.
30. Examtaker [Steam 06/20/2021]: A short, Sweet, update to a great game.
31. Megaman Zero [Switch 06/21/2021]: That final boss is a lot harder than I remember.
32. Persona 5 Strikers [PS4 06/21/2021]: This game is just one giant pleasant surprise, kudos to Koei Tecmo for easily their best Musou.
33. Megaman Zero 2 [Switch 06/23/2021]: My first Megaman Game and Holy shit the improvement from one to this game is tangible.
34. World's End Club [Switch 06/26/2021]: A solid 6/10. The story's good but I have no idea why the creators thought they could make a decent platformer.
35. Metroid Fusion [3DS 06/27/2021]: Metroid Dread hype.
36. Super Metroid [3DS 06/28/2021]: Saved the Animals with 5 seconds to spare.
37. Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition HD [Switch 07/05/2021]: Ambitious to say the least. Gold Star for effort.
38. Picross S3 [Switch 07/06/2021]: Not an addict, you're an addict.
39. Balan Wonderworld [PS5 07/08/2021]: Not as bad as they'd said, nowhere near as good as you'd like.
40. Gravity Rush [PS4 07/10/2021]: Gravity Rush is that great blend of just short enough to binge, while having enough content to keep you on your toes.
41. Megaman Zero 3 [Switch 07/11/2021]: This game is way harder than I remembered it.
42. Megaman Zero 4 [Switch 07/11/2021]: Fuck Weil.
43. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening [Switch 07/12/2021]: What a fun pick-up-and-play in one sitting kind of game.
44. Pokemon Sword [07/14/2021]: Crown Tundra breaks the main game and it's hilarious.
45. Super Mario Sunshine [07/15/2021]: Attempted some speed run tech. Achieved none of them.
46. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD [Switch 07/18/2021]: Just as good a game as always, now prettier.
47. Age of Calamity: Pulse of the Ancients [07/24/2021]: Completed the research, The new Weapons/Character are fun but those Vicious enemies suck.
48. Kirby's Dreamland [3DS 07/24/2021]: Maybe I'm drunk but I don't remember extra mode being so hard.
49. Neo: The World Ends With You [PS4 07/31/2021]: Worth the 13 year wait.
50. Final Fantasy III (PR) [Steam 08/07/2021]: The music is amazing. While it is charming to finally play the OG FFIII I think I will probably stick to the DS version to replay, just felt more balanced overall.
51. Final Fantasy II (PR) [Steam 08/09/2021]: That game sucks.
52. Super Mario Bros. [3DS 08/10/2021]: Did I play this because I miscounted, yes.
53. Great Ace Attorney [Switch 08/26/2021]: While the story and characters are fun, I can't help but feel that the entire game feels like a 20 hour prologue to the second game.
54. Final Fantasy IV PR [Steam 09/10/2021]: FFIV's so god damn good.
55. Journey [Steam 09/12/2021]: I had fun time, nice to re-experience with new strangers again.
56. Deltarune Chapter 1 [Switch 09/16/2021]: Figured I should finally play this considering...
57. Warioware: Get it Together [Switch 09/19/2021]: Probably the hardest Warioware, mostly to do with the different characters but they did a great job of differentiating the characters.
58. Dragon Quest [Switch 09/26/2021]: That game is 90% grind but charming none the less.
59. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time [3DS 09/27/2021]: I'm just in a retro mood right now.
60. Metroid Dread [Switch 10/09/2021]: Takes bits and pieces from Fusion and Samus Returns while having it's own flair. Much like Samus Returns however the bosses do way too much damage to be enjoyable.
61. Dragon Quest 2 [Switch 10/09/2021]: In some ways an improvement on the first game, much bigger, but that end game sucks.
62. Kingdom Hearts [PS4 10/11/2021]: Sora's in Smash, I'm overjoyed.
63. Metroid Prime [WiiU 10/27/2021]: Playing Dread and this game after I have come to appreciate the subtle rail-roading of these games to always keep you on track.
64. Metroid Prime 2 [WiiU 11/04/2021]: Metroid Prime is a near flawless game, and while the highs in 2 are higher, the lows are lower as well.
65. Animal Crossing: New Horizons [Switch 11/05/2021]: I hadn't touched this game in almost a year but it turns out I was one day away from K.K. Slider.
66. Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars [Switch 11/08/2021]: A solid game that admittedly moves at a somewhat sluggish pace.
67. Metroid Prime 3 [WiiU 11/10/2021]: Still hate Hypermode all this time later and the intro is very slow and unmetroid-like, but it's still a really good game in the end.
68. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond [Switch 11/21/2021]: Sinnoh was never my favorite region and even in this version the back chunk drags, but this version was a really well made revisit.
69. Tetris Effect: Connected [Switch 11/24/2021]: We have Tetris Effect at home; Tetris Effect at home.
70. Aladdin [Switch 11/26/2021]: Console N version better fight me.
71. Mother [GBA 11/30/2021]: What an amazing game way ahead of it's time
72. Mother 3 [GBA 12/14/2021]: I forgot how genuinely heart-breaking this game is.

Completed: 9/52

Currently Playing: Either Returnal (PlayStation 5) -or- something on Xbox Game Pass (Xbox Series S)

1. Astro's Playroom (PlayStation 5) | January 1st | 7/10 (Good)
Nostalgia overload! Smile on my face for most of the game. Enjoyed the environmental feedback from the DualSense more than the gameplay features built around the new controller. The suits did not feel great to play, in my opinion. Climbing with weaker gripping spots, forcing the user to lightly tap the trigger, was a clever mechanic. There were some obscure hidden trophies to get the platinum, but I enjoyed the search for puzzle pieces and artifacts.

2. Bugsnax (PlayStation 5) | January 15th | 7/10 (Good)
This one grabbed me from the beginning with the seemingly dark/scary tone. Then it quickly switched to the funny, whimsical world I expected. Voice acting was top-notch throughout. Looked forward to each area to see which Bugsnax would populate the environment. Was disappointed that a food as great as the taco was reduced to a cockroach-like creature. Story let me down in the end, but the characters met along the way had me invested. Figuring out ways to capture each Bugsnax tested me just enough to make me think but not go crazy.

3. Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo Switch) | February 10th | 7/10 (Good)
I play through this game every year it seems, but this is the first time I remember going through the second quest. 1-1 remains one of the classic levels in video game history. This is a 10/10 back in the 80's and early 90's, but rating it in 2021 drops it down a few pegs. The music runs through your head all day. The challenge in the game does not start until the eighth world for me. The double-jump in 8-1 then the gap after the pipe in 8-2 trip me up a bit. Would be interested in playing this game without a timer. Could spend more time hitting blocks, searching for extra lives, and the such. One of the few games I feel the need to rush.

4. God of War (PlayStation 5) | March 8th | 10/10 (Masterpiece)
Incredible game. The combat mechanics, the story, the graphics, the characters, the mythology, the set pieces, the environments, the loading screens... all top notch. Incredibly interested to see how the story continues in the next title. The valkyries were a great set of bosses, but I think the trolls became long in the tooth. The fights with Baldur were epic. I played the game on the second lowest difficulty, but I was worried that the enemies would become more sponge than difficult, so I didn't raise it. May do a new game plus run on Give Me a Challenge before Ragnarok drops. I was thrown for a loop when one realm played similarly to a roguelite experience and another was a series of trials.

5. Fractured Minds (Xbox Series S) | April 20th | 4/10 (Bad)
Played this as I knew it was short and leaving Xbox Game Pass by the end of April. Very light puzzle elements and there was some lag with interactions during my experience. It is a peak into the mind but not deep enough to resonate for me. The developer is young, and I will be looking to see what she does in the future.

6. Donut County (Xbox Series S) | April 21st | 6/10 (Okay)
Enjoyed the Mira-BK interactions. Quacking on the phone is fun. The gameplay itself is simple as the hole you control grows bigger based on the objects collected. Some light puzzle elements during the game, but I would like to have seen larger levels and a tad more difficult puzzles. Maybe some more hidden objects like the special soup recipe and vault. Enjoyed my time with it, but it is just okay compared to more lengthy projects with more gameplay systems.

7. The Gardens Between (Xbox Series S) | April 25th | 5/10 (Mediocre)
Puzzle game where you manipulate a time loop with certain objects in the environment. Every level appeared to have only one way to solve, so that limits my enjoyment of the game. Very pretty game with beautiful colors and backgrounds. Story was a nothingburger for me until the last scene before credits. That brought some feelings back up. Shorter experience as I completed it in a couple hours, and it did not overextend its welcome. Didn't find any of the puzzles too memorable, however.

8. Guacamelee! 2 (Xbox Series S) | May 6th | 8/10 (Great)
Great metroidvania/brawler title. Plenty of Easter eggs of video game history, and I enjoyed the comedic tone of this series. Combat is fun and the platforming is challenging enough where you will have to retry some segments. That said, you are quickly back in the action and no crazy length between save points. Great length to this game where it took me just shy of twenty hours to 100% a playthrough. Proving Grounds DLC was good fun. Only setbacks for me were those Eagle points. I just could not get the timing/window opening down, so it led to some frustration where I was not hurling through the air as I intended. The achievement hunter side of me would prefer either hard difficulty unlocked initially or allow the next game to be a new game plus.

9. Carrion (Xbox Series S) | May 9th | 7/10 (Good)
This one was a roller coaster in how I enjoyed it. Initially loved it with the originality of being the monster in this sci-fi/horror theme, but it then got a bit long in the tooth. Then by the end I was loving the last couple levels and the Christmas-themed DLC. A lot more on the puzzle/metroidvania side than I expected. The lack of a map was not as big an issue I anticipated from reading impressions, though I thought the control room could be a menu item as compared to a physical location. Surprisingly enjoyed the ending of this game story-wise, as there is very little story content in the game. Swimming in sevens.

First game of 2021 complete! I did a Soul Level 1 run in just under 8 hours.

After getting the platinum in 2020 I had the itch to keep playing. I had never tried a Soul Level 1 run before and because I typically go for strength builds, it seemed like a fun challenge to be weak for once. Overall I actually think the run was fairly similar to a NG+ run. While you don't have extra levels, you have an insane amount of souls at all times so you can always get a ton of materials to upgrade gear or have max stock for any items you think will be useful on your journey. Demon's Souls is broken up into different sections, which actually makes Soul Level 1 run much easier as well as you can optimize your gear for each section versus massive areas.

1. Assemble with Care (PC) | 2nd Jan - 111min | 3/5
cool little game. The puzzles never get too intricate but the story was nice. Id like a stand alone game building items from the ground up sort of like the coffee machine in the epilogue.

1. Yakuza: Like a Dragon - 1/5/21 (Xbox Series X/Windows 10 via Play Anywhere) - When this game was originally announced, I was not a fan. I didn't like the idea of Kiryu from the main series being replaced by a new character and to top it off. I did not like that it went from a brawler to a turn based battle system. Before playing this entry, I had played Yakuza 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2. I had started Yakuza 6 & 3 but then opted to wait. I picked this up at launch not expecting much, but holy shit this game turned out to be absolutely amazing. Everything about this game turned out to be amazing. The characters, the story, the combat, the side missions, mini-games. It just had so much to offer. If I had to choose between Ichiban Kasuga (new MC) and Kiryu (old MC). I'd still go with Kiryu, but I would absolutely love to see more of Ichi and another turn based entry. You can easily enjoy Yakuza: Like a Dragon without playing any of the other ones, however if you at least played one of the previous entries. (0 or Kiwami), you'll enjoy it a bit more since you'll recognize some of the characters are you progress through the story. Also, the English voiceover is fantastic. Definitely a must play!

2. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - 1/19/21 (Xbox Series S) - I've been so excited to return to this game. I only got to play the original briefly back in the days and after recently reading through all of the Scott Pilgrim comics, it made this game a lot more special due to the amount of references you can find. Watching the movie alone would have you miss a lot of those references. The game itself in the beginning can be a bit frustrating, tough enemies, low attack can lead to getting your ass kicked even on the Average Joe difficulty. However, this game has RPG elements, which require you to level up, buy upgrades and you end up becoming a monster at some point. I managed to unlock the hidden character and got to beat the game with all characters except one. (The Hidden Character), I did manage to get all of the achievements (1000/1000). One thing that is an absolute disaster in this game is the online. I really hope they get that fixed by the time Limited Run Games has the Xbox physical copy.

3. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - (1/22/21) (Xbox Series S) - This game surprisingly looks good on the Xbox Series S. I had started back when it first launched, but haven't had the time to come back to it. The story feels fairly short but it was good. I still preferred the story in 2019's Modern Warfare, but COD campaigns are like the Fast and the Furious movies, at this point they're just a guilty pleasure. Not amazing, but still fun to go through. Compared to the other games, this game felt extremely easy on Veteran. Mainly due to the perks you can choose at the beginning of the campaign. I'm not opposed to that since that could entice other players to enjoy it at a harder difficulty, specially if they like going after achievements/trophies. The game has multiple endings and to be honest, one of the few games where I preferred the bad ending over the good ending. With the way this one was setup, I could see a few cool setups on future installments.

4. Mortal Kombat XL - (1/26/21) (Xbox Series S) - I've had the game for quite a while but never got around to play it. I'm not as much into fighting games as I used to be, but I always enjoy a good cheesy story. One of the reasons why I wanted to finally get to it is my interest in Mortal Kombat 11. Watching the "Test Your Might" trailer sent chills down my spine, I absolutely loved what I saw, leading me to the prequel. The story mode took a couple of hours to complete, I did not skip any fights even though I came close a few times thanks to Ermac, he was cheap as hell to fight against. The final fight was a bit underwhelming but overall it was a solid game. I enjoyed my time with it, the story is nothing I'd go recommend to a friend, but if you own it and haven't played it. Definitely worth checking out.

5. Yakuza 0 - (1/31/21) (Xbox Series X) - Back at the old place, people hyped up Yakuza to no end. I had heard of the series but it never caught my attention. Heck, I even had Yakuza 5 from a free PS+ game, but never cared to play it. I had previously played this game on PlayStation, but as a fan of the series. I've bought the games on PlayStation, Xbox and some on PC. Ryu Ga Gotoku studio has delivered one of my favorite IPs ever and I'll buy anything Yakuza. This game starts off a bit slow, however it gets to a point of no return. The action, the comedy, the serious tone to the story and the brutal attacks are absolutely glorious. After recently finishing Like a Dragon (which was superb), I wanted to play this one again and I'm glad I did. It's an absolute blast and I highly recommend it. Most of the games are on GamePass as of this writing. (Yakuza 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

6. GoldenEye 007 XBLA - (2/3/21) (Xbox 360 S) - "Do you expect me to remove this Nintendo logo screen? - No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die." Where can I start with this one. Back in August 2016. Rare Thief had released footage from this cancelled port of GoldenEye 007. In the past I've tried going back to play the Nintendo 64 version of the game, but even though the game was amazing back then, by today standards. It's pretty rough, specially with the Nintendo 64 controller. When I read the news that this was out in the wild, I knew I had to play it. This game was a massive dose of nostalgia. The auto-aim is just as insane as it used to be, the ability to switch between engines (N64/XBLA) was pretty cool, just like it was done on Halo CE Anniversary and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Gameplay was surprisingly fun and easy to deal with the modern controllers and using a Xbox 360 controller. I often reverted between the engines and just to think that back in the days I used to think "wow this game looks amazing!" oh how times have changed. If you have the opportunity to play the game, absolutely do so. I haven't had a chance to try local multiplayer, but at some point in the future I will. I still hope that this gets officially released, even if it is for nostalgia purposes.

7. Yakuza Kiwami - (2/5/21) (Xbox Series X) - I had originally played this game back when it released on the PlayStation 4 and completed it. I had picked it up on Xbox when it first came out, but haven't had a chance to replay it. Game was a lot of fun just like Yakuza 0, the story is still pretty good, but not as solid as Yakuza 0's story. There's one thing I disliked about it though.

Haruka abandons the Shiba Inu at the end of the game. I'm a little biased because I have 3 Shiba's, but still! Why couldn't you go home with the Shiba?!

---------------------------

8. Yakuza Kiwami 2 (3/1/21) (Xbox Series X) - Just like with Kiwami, I had originally played this first on the PS4 when it first came out. This game had a really solid story, some of the twists are unexpected and the game does a good job developing some of the characters. This game has two of my favorite characters in the Yakuza series. (Ryuji Goda and Kaoru Sayama), they're both absolutely fantastic.

I had a great time revisiting this one even though it's on the shorter side. However, I did get to do some more side quests which made me happy. I've been enjoying playing the games back to back because I've been catching references that I previously missed from before. This is the first game in the series using the Dragon Engine. This engine makes the game look better than the predecessors, however it comes at the cost of framerates on consoles. (30fps).

Shiba Inu from Kiwami was recovered and taken to the Orphanage. Kiryu and Haruka still suck for letting it loose on the city though.

9. Yakuza 3 Remastered (3/7/21) (Xbox Series X) - Going into this game right after Kiwami 2 felt rough. Going from the Dragon Engine to a game with limited controls and some character models that looked like they were taken from Grand Theft Auto III was a bit jarring. The main cast was fine, but most of the thugs/gangsters in the game looked terrible. Visuals and controls aside. The story is short, this game only features around 12 chapters and it takes around 15 to 16 hours to complete. I had started the game on normal, but switched it to Easy because it becomes an absolute black fest. While I don't expect games to be easy, I wouldn't want every single fight to be frustrating with constant blocking. Story was a bit slow as well the first few chapters, story does a good job building up some of the characters and it develops nicely. There's one chapter specifically that pushed my emotions, I felt like the game was prepping me to just go all out and I absolutely loved it. I thought I wouldn't enjoy this game, but I absolutely did. After I beat the rest of the series, I plan on going back to them and try to clean up the sub stories and some of the achievements. I would still recommend a play through of this game, its rough at first but definitely shines story wise towards the end.

10. Yakuza 4 Remastered (3/14/21) (Xbox Series X) - This one started off things a bit differently, at first I wasn't too sure about it but turned out to be fun. Yakuza 4 starts off with a different playable character. The game is divided across 4 character with 4 chapters each + a finale. Seeing things from a different perspective definitely felt fresh since each character had their own fighting style. The story kept going at a good pace and overall I liked it. The game felt much better over Yakuza 3, but the story wasn't as strong as some of the previous entries. Down with 4, 5 is next!

11. Rock n' Roll Racing Definitive Edition (Blizzard Arcade Collection) (3/22/21) (Xbox Series X) - I used to love playing the hell out of this game as a kid on the SNES. When I saw the trailer for the collection, the sweet guitar sound triggered a lot of nostalgia. I knew I'd definitely be replaying them and I was quite happy to see that all versions were included. I had a blast going through the levels, upgrading my vehicles and just farming the racers when I had tons of ammo. I'd love a modern version of this game, but I feel like future like racers don't sell very well.

12. Yakuza 5 Remastered (4/2/21) (Xbox Series X) - Where do I start with this one, just like with Yakuza 4, this game has different main characters that you could play as. This game is by far the longest of the ones I've played so far clocking at 38 hours. I didn't do a lot of the side quests since I was mainly interested in the main story of the game. The game started off the stories for each character just fine, but some sections of the game felt like it dragged with certain characters. Some parts I just wanted to be done and over with, but even though some of these parts felt like they overstayed their welcome, some were pretty cool to see. Some of the twists of the story were fantastic, but out of all of the games so far. It wasn't as strong as the others. I do eventually plan on replaying the entire series again on new game+ and I know this one will definitely take some time to get everything done! Down with LAD, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now I'm right at the end with Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.

13. SaGa Frontier Remastered - Blue's Quest (4/16/21) (PlayStation 5)
14. SaGa Frontier Remastered - Lute's Quest (4/16/21) (PlayStation 5)
15. SaGa Frontier Remastered - Emilia's Quest (4/18/21) (PlayStation 5)
16. SaGa Frontier Remastered - Asellus's Quest (4/19/21) (PlayStation 5)

17. SaGa Frontier Remastered - T260G's Quest (4/21/21) (PlayStation 5)
18. SaGa Frontier Remastered - Red's Quest (4/24/21) (PlayStation 5)
19. SaGa Frontier Remastered - Riki's Quest (4/24/21) (PlayStation 5)
20. SaGa Frontier Remastered - Fuse's Quest (4/24/21) (PlayStation 5)

SaGa Frontier Remastered -
Oh I missed this game, I played it a lot back in 1997 and I just recently started going through all of the quests. Blue was always my favorite character to start with due to how extremely overpowered he gets. Doing things just perfectly to make sure you get as much magic as possible. I enjoyed my time with it, the new quest with Fuse turned out to be short, but fun! Still one of my favorite games of all time.

21. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (4/27/21) (PlayStation 5) - As a fellow Puerto Rican, getting to see some of the Puerto Rican vibes, flags and people speaking Spanish, it for sure made me smile. I had this game since launch but just recently got around to play it. I absolutely loved the re-imagining of Phin Mason. I played the game on Performance RT, I had originally tried the Fidelity mode but it felt awful personally. The one thing that I didn't like, it was that the game was way too short.

I really wished that Phin Mason would've lived, such an amazing character and her story ends with that game sadly.

22. NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 - Route A - (5/2/21) (Xbox Series X)
23. NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 - Route B (5/7/21) (Xbox Series X)
24. NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 - Route C (5/10/21) (Xbox Series X)
25. NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 - Route D (5/10/21) (Xbox Series X)
26. NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 - Route E (5/10/21) (Xbox Series X)

NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 -
When I first saw NieR: Automata getting announced. I didn't think much of the game, a hack-n-slash with a "waifu" and damn I was wrong. Originally purchased it on the PlayStation 4 when it went on sale. Didn't click with me and I ended up selling the game. When it got announced for Xbox One the following year, some friends were talking about how it was such a great game. I ended up buying it once again to give it another go and damn I'm glad I did. It introduced me to one of my new favorite series. Fast forward to March. I saw that NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 was announced. I was filled with joy. I loved NieR: Automata and getting to play the original would be amazing. I had played NieR on the Xbox 360 briefly, but at the time, it felt like nothing special.

I just recently completed all 5 playthroughs of NieR: Replicant and I'm impressed. At first I was disappointed with the additional endings since they felt very similar to the other routes, but each playthrough had some additional cutscenes. Automata handled the different routes a bit better but that's understandable. That's a sequel, this is a remaster. I absolutely had a blast with the game, but I must say that NieR truly delivers when you reach Ending E. Even though it wasn't in the original game, Ending E was fantastic. Only downside to the ending that in order to appreciate it some of it, you require to play NieR: Automata first. Story wise you do not, but some of the things you see through the ending, have more impact if you've played NieR: Automata.

I was slightly disappointed that Father NieR wasn't included in the main story. I would've loved to go through one of the playthroughs with him. He was in the game in a "side quest" that you get to play as him, but not in the main story. Hopefully Toylogic will do a DLC with Father NieR and do a proper next-gen update. Both of the next-gen systems should be able to run it easily at 4k/60fps considering the Xbox One X version ran at 1440p/60fps (which wasn't bad)

Ultimately, I preferred NieR: Automata over NieR: Replicant story wise. However, the characters from NieR: Replicant had more of a impact. Kaine & Grimore Weiss are by far two of my favorite characters of the Series. I'll gladly buy any other NieR games day one!

27. Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis (7/18/21) (Xbox Series X) - New Genesis has been quite refreshing so far. I had skipped Phantasy Star Online 2 previously because of how overwhelming the system was for me at first. Even though the game is lacking content at the moment, it's nice playing a game from the beginning and growing with it as you go. Story was a bit of a slog due to some grinding required to get to the next point in the story but none the less it has been enjoyable so far.

30. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (8/6/21) (Nintendo Switch) -
I finally decided to finish off Breath of the Wild. I had put off finishing this game for some reason since 2017. I finished all of the shrines recently and then decided to go face Calamity Ganon. This game was a lot of fun overall, however the one thing I did find disappointing was the Divine Beasts, I definitely prefer the traditional dungeon system. So I hope for the sequel there's something like that.

31. Hades (8/14/21) (Windows 10/Xbox Series X) - I've heard so many good things about this game when it first came out but didn't really get around to playing it. I was pretty excited to see that the game was announced for Xbox Game Pass so I decided to give it a go and instantly got hooked. The little details on how characters change their dialogs depending on your deaths among other things kept the game fresh. Even though it's quite a bit of a grind to get some things, it's very, very enjoyable and I'll definitely be going back to try and finish all achievements. Supergiant did a fantastic job with this game and I'd love to see a sequel to it of some sort.

32. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 1 (Xbox Series X) (8/21)
33. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 2 (Xbox Series X) (8/21)
34. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 3 (Xbox Series X) (8/21)
35. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 4 (Xbox Series X) (8/21)
36. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 5 (Xbox Series X) (8/21)
37. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 6 (Xbox Series X) (8/21)

Phantasy Star Online 2 (Xbox Series X) -
I never expected to get hooked into this game the way I did. I loved the originals when they came out on the Sega Dreamcast/Nintendo GameCube and the Xbox 360 (PSU). but this one seemed overly complicated. The menus, the amount of stuff to do was just extremely overwhelming. Doesn't help that the game doesn't really use quest markers to make things easier. (Something that was corrected with the release of PSO2: New Genesis). I started with the Braver/Fighter classes until I was able to unlock one of the Scion classes which are quite powerful. The story in the earlier chapters was a bit meh because the cutscenes were just not that interesting. However, luckily the story of the game can be better seen through the Phantasy Star Online 2 anime. Which I enjoyed way more than the cutscenes they had. Out of the two versions of Phantasy Star Online. I vastly prefer New Genesis menu & gameplay, but the original Phantasy Star Online 2 has a great amount of content. Also, the fact that you can move certain things between both versions and the game makes it easy to switch between the versions (OG or NG) is awesome.

38. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (Xbox Series X) - One of the sleeper hits of the year. The reveal was awful and immediately dismissed the game, but after seeing the glowing reviews I decided to pick it up and I'm glad I did. Absolutely loved the story, Drax was amazing and I'm hoping they do a sequel.

39. Crazy Taxi 3 - (Original Xbox) - While it's not a game that has a "campaign". I've always considered reaching rank S (rolls the credit in the game) to count as beating it since it's not really easy to do. This game is a classic and loved going back to it!

40. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Xbox Series X) - Thanks to the games that recently became backwards compatible, I was able to go through this one and beat the story mode!

41. Dead or Alive 4 (Xbox Series X)
42. Melty Blood: Type Lumina (Xbox Series X)
43. Super Mario RPG (SNES - Xbox Series X via RetroArch)
44. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES - Xbox Series X via RetroArch)

45. Halo Infinite (Xbox Series X) - Legendary Run
46. Halo Infinite (Xbox Series X) - Easy Run
47. Halo Infinite (Xbox Series X) - SLASO (Solo Legendary All Skulls On) Run
48. Halo Infinite (Xbox Series X) - Legendary 100% Run

Halo Infinite - After the initial reveal I was beyond excited to see that Halo was going semi open-world. Getting to explore a Halo ring was always one of the things I wanted to do. The initial delay was disappointing but I'm very happy that the game was delayed, it gave 343i the time required to deliver a solid campaign. While I was sad that it wouldn't have co-op at launch, Zeta Halo is a world that is best to enjoy on your own since you can go around and explore. While some of the tasks were somewhat repetitive. I had an absolute blast, the grappling hook its definitely a fantastic addition and I cannot see any future Halo's not having it. As someone who played Halo Wars 2, this game had a lot more impact because of some of the characters, but its a game that any newcomer can easily jump into. Can't wait to see what they do next!

49. Beat Saber (Oculus Quest 2)
50. Batman Returns (SNES - Xbox Series X via RetroArch)
51. Final Fight (SNES - Xbox Series X via RetroArch)
52. TMNT: Turtles in Time (SNES - Xbox Series X via RetroArch)
53. TMNT: Hyperstone Heist (Sega Genesis - Xbox Series X via RetroArch)

Finished -
  1. Cybarian - The Time Travelling Warrior (PsVita) / 7/10
    • It is short and fun, has some replayability based on harder game modes.
  2. Criminal Girls - Invite Only (PsVita) / 3/10
    • Holy shit. What an excuse of a game, honestly. It's a grinding fest, didn't even bother to get to the ending. And let's not talk about the fetish stuff going on it... gross. Don't know why i even bothered playing it.
  3. The Secret of Monkey Island - Remastered (PC) / 20/10 would play it again.
    • Hey! This game is great! The art and voice acting on it is awesome and the dialogues are really fun, i loved it, everyone should play this thing at least once in their life time.
  4. Devious Dungeon (PsVita) / 6/10
    • Short Roguelike game with not many upgrade options. It's a time killer, mostly.
  5. Monkey Island 2 - LeChuck's Revenge (PC) / 30/10, really
    • I'm surprised to find a sequel better than the original game. Puzzles where a bit harder (and sometimes made no sense at all), but it was fun and i still love the characters and dialogues.
  6. Devious Dungeon 2 (PsVita) / 7'5/10
    • Still not one of the best Rogue-likes out there, but it got better on his second game. Plays much like the first one, but has some new fun mechanics throw over it.
  7. Chasm (PsVita) / 8/10
    • A solid Rogue-like with seed generated playthroughs! It is fun to play, not to hard and beautiful to look at. Never saw anyone talk about it and it is hard to not recommend.
  8. Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak (GBA) / 8/10
    • Never underestimate Hamtaro games! This one in particular is funny and quite relaxing and easy to 100%. Really enjoyable!
  9. Shrek 2 (GBA) / 6/10
    • Not perfect, but not bad either. It's a pretty easy but solid platformer that can get you a couple hours of fun.

Playing -
  • Enderal: Forgotten Stories / PC
  • TES V - Skyrim SE (Pc)
  • Mario & Luigi SuperStar Saga (GBA)
  • Cyberpunk 2077 (PC)

2022 list

1 - RPG Maker MV - PS4 - 40hrs / 5th Jan - 8/10
I've dabbled in RPG maker on PC for years but never really made anything substantial in it. I think the sheer amount of assets available online and the ability to create your own as well as all the add on scripts meant I just was overwhelmed by the possibilities.
the constraints of the PS4 version, forcing you to use the basic standard assets, has actually been freeing for me and helped me concentrate on making the game itself. I've finished my first mini-opus and will expand upon it over time. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to just concentrate on writing a good story within the framework of a standard JRPG.

2 - Pistol Whip - Occulus Quest - 3hrs / 13th Jan - 10/10
Got an Occulus Quest 1 over Xmas, I played a few games but the first that really grabbed me was Pistol Whip. I hadn't bought it on PSVR and I'm glad I finally got round to it, it's the perfect combination of an on rail shooter and music since Rez and I think I prefer the music in Pistol Whip.

3 - Beat Saber - Occulus Quest - 5hrs / 13th Jan - 10/10
I loved this game on PSVR and I got hooked on the online multiplayer on Occulus. I prefer the move controllers for the sabers though, their weight helps with grounding the movements. I struggle to feel comfortable swinging my arms with the quest controllers and keep readjusting my hands as they keep slipping. Still a fantastic game regardless.

4 - Robo Recall: Unplugged - Occulus Quest - 3hrs / 19th Jan - 8/10
Great graphics and gun gameplay but the levels and enemies get really repetitive after a while.

5 - Hitman 3 - PS5 - 15hrs / 9th Feb - 9/10
I could never get into Hitman. I only played the tutorial missions in Hitman 1 and I found the first mission in Hitman 2 infuriating and never got past that either. I'm glad I decided to give 3 a go despite my better judgment. For some reasons, it finally clicked and I loved every minute of the game (well, apart from the train level but I don't think it counts). I even started through Hitman 1 now and really enjoying it.

6 - Assassin's creed: Valhalla - PS5 - 200hrs / 29th March - 7/10
I really enjoyed Eivor and the world you explore but the game just dragged on far too long and I was glad to get to the end. Every arc was very well written and the characters were all engaging but the cut scenes were terrible in general with awkward pauses and too many talking heads. I expected better from Ubisoft in that respect, it's a massive step back from the ACs of old in that respect.

7. Disco Elysium: Final cut - PS5 - 20hrs /21st April - 10/10
This has jumped into my top 10 favourite games ever. It's such a unique experience. As soon as I'd finished it, I just had to start again but with 'opposite' stats. Absolute classic. Also, I didn't encounter any game breaking bugs, just missed dialogue audio until the patch came in.

8. Returnal - PS5 - 70hrs / 5th June - 10/10
Man, do I suck at that game yet it has easily become one of my favourites this year. Over 100 deaths to get to the end... but it was worth it. Loved every minute.

9 - Virtual Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown - PS5 - 20hrs / 10th June - 7/10
I will keep playing but I have plateaued in the rankings, currently at 6th Dan with my boy Lion Rafale so I'll call it done. I just wish it had the VF4 single-player campaign through the arcades and more clothing styles to apply. Still a great game though.

10 - Yakuza: Like A Dragon - PS5 - 80hrs / 27th June - 10/10
I absolutely loved the gameplay and Ichiban is the best Yakuza protagonist ever. The story is also really compelling and gets really emotional in places. My favourite Yakuza game now, taking Judgement's top spot.

11 - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart - PS5 - 10hrs / 6th July -8/10
Beautiful game but despite its short length does get repetitive after a while. Everyone with a PS5 should play it to really see what the machine is capable of, such a technical masterpiece. I just wish they had been more inventive with some of the level and enemy designs.

12 - Doki Doki Literature Club - PS5 - 4hrs / 13th July - 10/10
I knew this was going to be a special game. I just didn't realise how much it would get into my head. I can't stop thinking about it. Amazing game.

13 - Hyper Light Drifter - PS4 - 12hrs / 6th August - 10/10
I don't know why it took me so long to play this game. It had been in my backlog for a long time. One of the best 2D action adventure I've ever played.

14 - Horizon: Zero Dawn - PS4 - 50hrs / 20th August - 7/10
I'd started the game when it first came out, gave up halfway through and decided to pick it up again a couple of weeks ago. I feel I'd stopped playing at the worst possible moment as the story really picked up right after that point and I was hooked on the main storyline until the very end. I enjoyed my Time with the game but I wrestled with the combat the whole way. I loved the idea of fighting the metal dinosaurs but in practice it was fiddly and there was always too many ganging up on you and it was a chore to fight them so I actively avoided going off the beaten path and ran through any sections I could to avoid having to fight them which really isn't how to play an open-world game. I'm hoping the Sequel will gel better with me in this area.

15 - man Of Medan - PS4 - 6hrs / 2nd September - 9/10
I'm kicking myself for not playing this earlier. I loved Until Dawn, I love multi-paths stories with different endings and I like short games. Yet I didn't find the trailers or the title of the game that enticing. I'm glad I finally gave in though as I absolutely loved it. Replaying it to see what consequences my actions could lead to was amazing. There are so many ways through this story, it's pretty incredible and unlike Until Dawn, it's short enough that it's not daunting to retry and get them all. My main criticism is the inability to skip cutscenes once you've gone through that exact same one at least once before. I get why you can't skip them the first time round as they keep you on your toes as to whether there could be a QTE or not But once you know, it can be a chore to see the same long dialogue happen. Also there are a lot of graphical glitches. I'm playing on PS5 so I don't know if it's a back compat issue but it's really distracting when the game looks so good otherwise.

16 - Death Stranding: Director's cut - PS5 - 99hrs / 3rd October - 10/10
One of my favourite games to come back to and just walk around fixing roads and building zip lines. The director's cut doesn't add much but I love the 4K widescreen mode and the firing range exercises were fun, they reminded me of the MGS VR missions.

17 - Hades - PS5 - 20hrs / 3rd October - 10/10
I only finished my first escape so calling it finished may be cheating? I will be going back through with other weapons and unlock traits but I'll still happy to call it completed if I never return to it so I'll mark it as a "done".

18 - Toem - PS5 - 7hrs / 9th October / Platinum - 10/10
beautiful relaxing little game that doesn't overstay its welcome. I would t change a single thing about it.

19 - Telling lies - PS4 - 13hrs / 12th October / Platinum - 7/10
I enjoyed the mechanics of searching for missing videos but the story wasn't great and I wish you could watch both sides of a conversation together once you unlock them. I also wish it had a "timeline" feature like in visual novels where you can see when in the timeline the missing videos are. It's really frustrating to find the last few videos when you have no idea when in the story they could be and when you have to just randomly look for words, something's gone wrong in the game design.

20 - Deathloop - PS5 - 30hrs / 14th November - 9/10
I love the gameplay in Deathloop. The moment to moment action combined with the weapon configurations and combinations of powers is really enjoyable. It's a shame that it's so linear considering the possibilities of having multiple ways of completing the game with the loop mechanic. That's such a wasted opportunity but the game is still incredible despite this flaw.

21 - Mafia - PS4 - 15hrs / 23rd November - 9/10
I hadn't played Mafia before and I wasn't prepared for how good the story was. I was on the verge of crying by the end. It's a shame the story is so short and hat the open-world is under utilised. You don't have any reasons to explore, a few side quests or mini games would have been nice.

22 - Unsighted - PS4 - 9hrs / 29th November - 9/10
Amazing metroidvania. Reminded me a lot of Hyper Light Drifter but I actually think Unsighted is even better. The only reason why it's not a 10 in my book is because of the nuisance of having to go in the menu every time I need to change tools for different puzzles, it gets grating after a while but everything else in this game is god-tier.

23 - Kena: Bridge of spirits - PS5 - 10hrs / 19th December - 9/10
Really nice, relaxing Zelda-like experience. First game in the last few years where i was sad it was ending. I wish the last zone was a "proper" zone like the first two and not 3 small linear rooms with a mini-boss but that's just testament to how Smith I enjoyed my time with it and didn't want it to end. Weird performance slowdown asides (why does the game always slow to a crawl when you navigate the big rot around?), one of the best games this year.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure
Genshin Impact 2.2

dropped:
World end Syndrome - Basically need a guide to get a good ending or reload your save over and over to get the correct events. It has an interesting mystery and nice art/animations but not worth the hassle honestly.
Nier Replicant - Maybe I'll come back to it some day but dropping it for now because honestly the menus and UI are so annoying to traverse. They updated the graphics and combat but the game feels ancient to navigate.

Reserved. I'll fail spectacularly, but this will be a nice incentive to actually play my backlog.

January:

1. Strange Journey Redux was really good, final mother aside, but oh my god, is this game long.

2. Super Metroid was really enjoyable until Maridia. This level cut off 1 out of 5 points in my rating. I genuinely hated my time in there, especially since I first went right after the elevator

3. The Wolf Among Us - Episode 1. This game is incredibly charming, but it really shows its age. It also has a good narrative, on par with TWD1 I'd say for now.

4. The Wolf Among Us - Episode 2. i'm really liking this game, but were TWD episodes this short?

Ok, so I've taken a couple of exams and now I'm trying to get back on track:

5. The Wolf Among Us - Episode 3.

6. The Wolf Among Us - Episode 4.

7. The Wolf Among Us - Episode 5. I liked it way more than I should have, I'll definetely buy the sequel when it comes out.

8. Cave Story. This game was hard. I also want to talk to the person that decided that controls on a gamepad should be mapped on the left stick.

9. Ghost 'n' Goblins. Pain. I regret everything and feel no "strongth welling in my body", Capcom. I would believe it if somebody said me this game was designed with rewind in mind, I can't imagine playing it without it

10. Sayonara Wild Hearts. This game is styilish as hell and doesn't overstay its welcome- I love it.

11. Mega Man 11. Suffering pt.2. Somehow I was able to run this game in 4k on my external monitor from my laptop's 1650 max-q, it still looked cheap but it was quite charming nonetheless.

12. Finding Paradise. I've played To The Moon a long time ago and I remember really liking it. Still, I was incredibly surprised by how well I still remembered the main characters. Finding Paradise is more of the same, that's true, but with a nice twist that plays on what you expect from it.

13. Carrion. Really liked this one, but the unhorthodox control schemes combined with the absence of a map and the pseudo-metroidvania structure make it really frustrating when you get lost between areas.

14. Bastion. The artstyle is really cute, but the 3d model of the main character is quite ugly and clumsy. The gameplay is fine, not particularly brilliant or bad.

15. Titanfall 2. I'd already heard numerous times that the campaign was incredible, but I didn't expect it to be THIS good. It's the most fun I've ever had with an FPS and I can't wait for Titanfall 3.

16. Transistor. It's Bastion on steroids, every other comment is superfluous. I really liked the voice acting though.

17. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. Really a cute game, but that last boss fight goes on FOREVER. I really like the real time stuff, I've bought this game only because of my fond time with Bowser's Inside Story on the DS. It's also really refreshing to play a 20 hours jrpg.

18. Cuphead. Wow, this game is perfect, I loved my whole time with it. The last time I had this much fun with a videogame was probably the Xcom reboot. Tense at all times, always challenging and fresh.

19. Fire Emblem: Shadow of Valentia. Nice, not as good as Awakening and with a very dull story, but it's still Fire Emblem, despite the gameplay

20. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Botw aside, this is the tolz game that feels most like an actual adventure. Its problems are mostly due to its age and some obtuse stuff I needed a guide for.

I'll reserve as well.

Think I managed 40 games in 219, and 50 in 2020. Now I'm out of games I'm interested in playing though, so this will probably be a light year.

Guess I will join this time as well :D

14/52

January:

1. World Of Warcraft Shadowlands - Patch 9.0 - ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ (quit probably)
World of Warcraft is like a grandmother giving you food. In some cases it is your favorite others she forgot you didn't like it. Shadowlands is the food that I like. Not perfect but definitely in the right direction. I really enjoyed the leveling and the new squish. The endgame is what you expect (not great but not bad either) but it is much more alt friendly. Also I do not feel I have to play every day which is great! I will come back to it when Patch 9.1 comes out.

Some dislikes:

- Anima is really limited. But I guess/hope that will be better in future patches
- Torghast was great in the beginning, now falls short.
- Mythic+ loot changes are terrible.

2. Ghost of Tsushima - ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Singing autumn leaves
Twin mountains showing a view
A game of honour

3. Gris - ☆ ☆ 1/2
Gris was a journey through emotions. I really liked the dynamic music and the slow change of colours in the levels from bleak to more colourful and the message it sent was quite powerful. I mentioned journey and it also had a similar vibe to the game Journey. Though, it didn't hit me as hard as Journey did. I did enjoy it and glad I played it.

February:

4. Heroes of the Storm - ☆ ☆ (quit probably)
One of the best MOBA's I played in my past years. I have played it on and off in Alpha and I think the characters are pretty interesting. Too bad Blizz pulled the plug on this one. But it is still quite active! Sadly there is still a lot of toxicity.

5. Monster Hunter Rise January Demo - ☆ ☆
I am looking forward in playing this in March even more. I played it with my friends during the release and it was a blast. I come back to this franchise and game when the full game is announced in March.

6. Triangle Strategy Demo - ☆ ☆
Well, I am sold. I am really looking forward how the game will build upon this demo and the feedback they get. This was really cool and tastes for more. I am a bit sad that it is a 2022 release date. The depth you can take this is great and I felt I had a lot of choice already within the demo in how I wanted to fight as well. For now the characters are interesting as well. Though, the voice acting could be better in English in some cases. But let's see where they will bring this!

March - May:

7-9. Monster Hunter Rise (till 3.0) - ☆ ☆ ☆ (ongoing)
I was already hyped due to the demo and that didn't change. Each update gave me a games worth of stuff to do so I added it as three games completed. Anyway, it is the best game in the series for starters and easily in my top three Nintendo Switch games. The new monsters are amazing indeed.

10. Final Fantasy VII: Remake - ☆ ☆
It finally happend my first mainline Final Fantasy finished. I am looking forward to Part 2. Overall a good experience but expected something more. It was quite a linear game and expected more openess. Furthermore, I think it had a bit of a slow mid in some cases, though I really loved the character development of the characters. That said the ending was very well done and I loved every second of it.

11. New Pokemon Snap- ☆ ☆ 1/2 (ongoing)
Enjoyed it more than I expected. Especially playing it together with my girlfriend. It becomes some sort of a challenge each other and see who makes the best pictures. The Pokemon are adorable and the game looks and runs great. I am definitely quite surprised. Small tidbit: the highest score is currently for me with 5803.

12. Super Smash Bros: Ultimate - ☆ ☆ ☆ (Ongoing)
I mean this is pretty much an ongoing game for me that I play inbetween games quite often. With new characters popping up so now and then it is always nice to pick up the game again. I may actually have found my actual main finally with Pyra/Mythra as they play wonderfully! I will update this during the rest of the year.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - ☆ ☆
When I heard about this game I decided to order and see for myself what it was about. I heard people like Sakurai saying it was amazing but also on Era people were quite positive about it. So finally I took the time to sit and play and it blew me away. What a great story with great visuals, characters and music. I enjoyed every second of it and I am glad I played it. This was amazing. For now my number two game on the PS4.

14. Paper Mario: The Origami King - ☆ ☆
This would be close to a 10 for me if it wasn't for the slow battle system. That said, I took a small break in the game and noticed that it was much easier in hindsight. But still such a slow fighting style. If the game was action focused or just normal RPG focused and bosses just being the puzzle element I would have loved it more. Now with that out of the way: Music, writing, animation was all top notch. Great game loved it and is definitely in my top 10 perhaps hitting top 5 but I have to make a solid list for my favorite Switch games.

Currently playing: Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Tales of Berseria
Planning: Spider-Man, Mario+Rabbids, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Luigi's Mansion 3

Let's go, 2021! This'll make year number eight for me (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020).
Like last year, I didn't really write down my impressions, but I tried to abandon games I didn't like pretty early, so almost everything I completed I actually "liked" this year (or, at the very least, was short enough I could power through it)! There were a few Game Pass games that definitely fell into the latter category, though.

1. Path of Exile - PC - 4.5/5

First time completing the main campaign, played as a chieftain cyclone. I'm continuing to play end-game a little and will come back to the game in future leagues.

2. League of Legends - PC - 5/5

Hit my target for this season in ranked early, after only starting this game for the first time last year.

3. PUBG - PC - 3/5

I now have a PC that can run this game again so got back in and got a chicken dinner. Fun with friends.

4. It Takes Two - PC - 4.5/5

I'll never forget this game and what we did to that elephant.

I might as well give this a try, it'd be nice to actually know how many new games I completed this year.

Rating System, using Sonic games as an example.

5/5 - Great game, would marry it if it was legal. (Sonic 2)
4/5 - Good but not great. The fun of playing it outweighs the flaws. (Sonic Adventure 2)
3/5 - Decent but has some sort of major flaw, or enough minor ones that makes it just that, decent. (Sonic Heroes)
2/5 - Despite being bad, is still entertaining or has obvious potential, whether intentional or unintentional. (Sonic 2006, Sonic 1 GBA)
1/5 - So bad that it's just actually bad, I can have no fun with it outside of just stating how bad parts of it are. (Sonic 4 Episode 2)
0/5 - A game that is literally unplayable, or is so bad that I have no urge to finish it. (Sonic Crackers // Sonic and the Secret Rings)

1. Danganronpa V3: Killing Hamrony (PC) | 13th Jan - 26hrs | 3/5
2. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PC) | 25th Jan - 14hrs | 4/5
3. Egg Returns Home (PC) | 31st Jan - 1hr | 1/5
4. You have 293 Keys (PC) | 2nd Feb - 0.2hrs | 2/5

1. Danganronpa V3: Killing Hamrony - 3/5

Finished Thoughts:
- Gears 5 & Hivebusters: Solid game. I played the multi a ton at launch and finally got around to finishing the SP now (technically finished campaign 12/31, but Hivebusters 1/1). Really fun set pieces and combat on experienced, I liked the characters a lot better than I did with 4 but I didn't love that the story had me spending the whole game trying to activate a weapon that ended up being useless anyway. Hivesbusters was very good, more of the same but a fun story.

- Call of the Sea: It was alright, I liked some of the puzzles and found some of them a little irritating. I liked the story in the last couple of chapters, but the middle dragged a little. Good quick game. Really pretty to look at.

- The Touryst: (1000/1000) Actually a helluva lot more enjoyable and more varied than I expected. Came into it blind and it was the perfect game for that sort of thing, lots to discover and the To-Do Tasks helped with that. Gave me a chuckle a couple of times. Was unexpectedly pretty at times. Enjoyed the photograph quests. Some frustrating platforming in dungeons thanks to the camera angle only being controllable on the x-axis but was otherwise pretty fun.

- Celeste: Amazing game. Right level of difficulty (for A-Sides), really meaningful story, felt extremely rewarding to finish. Controls felt really well-tuned as expected from all the YouTube pieces about them, level design top notch. Can't say enough good things, great game.

- Donut County: (1000/1000) Really unique game and love the style and the dialogue. I really felt like it's a good start but they could explore other mechanics. The boss fight and things like the bug soup is what I mean. Easy 1000/1000.

- TES V: Skyrim: After starting Skyrim 3x and never finishing it, it coming out on Game Pass finally nudged me to actually get there this time. And it's definitely worth it. I've finished all the quest lines and have two achievements left to do, and it definitely felt good to finally finish. Enjoyed most of the stories (though me becoming the 'leader' in all of them got a little old lol). I played a Paladin build and I don't know how but it was still a blast brute forcing my way through dungeons 100+ hours in.

- FM2021 Xbox Edition: Technically never finished but I got my league + CL double with Spurs so I'm counting it. Never played on Xbox, always on Windows. Was a lot more full featured than I thought it would be, but some of the slimmed down features like managing player happiness beyond one convo really is a miss because I don't know if they compensated enough for them. My favorite match engine in probably nearly a decade, there were still some mistakes and a few missed one-on-ones but it feels a lot more realistic than especially last year. Starting an unemployed playthrough shortly!

- Oxenfree: Such a unique game and game-style, right level of creepiness, kept me thinking after my playthrough, well-fleshed out characters, some legitimately difficult choices. Great game. The mechanic that facilitates the mirrors and the campground pond are so damn cool.

- New Super Lucky's Tale: (1000/1000) Decided to try this with the FPS boost. Fun enough game, liked the worlds, the controls felt good, some good bosses, and a great last world that was legitimately challenging. Not very memorable and the collectibles felt a little underwhelming. Was easy to 1000.

- Bloodstained: Also not terribly memorable, and I think it had a few too many visible systems that I didn't really pay attention to a lot of it (things like crafting, cooking, levelling skills, etc.). But I REALLY enjoyed the boss fights, and there was enough fun to be had along the way.

- Carto: Really special little package here, very unique puzzles and some really fun characters and levels. I especially liked the Desert and Lava levels. Thought they did some really creative things with the mechanics they use.

- Halo 2A: This was just my second play of the game and I'm going through the MCC in normal before jumping into Guardians in probably Heroic. Normal's really quite easy but I already finished these in Legendary so I'm good :D. Great game as many know, amazing soundtrack, really fun combat scenarios, good variety of weapons. Final boss was a little lacking, but otherwise I still had a lot of fun this playthrough.

- NBA 2k21: Hasn't really felt like the in-game has changed much over the years; for context, I played 2k7 and 2k13 regularly, and on-and-off since. The animations always feel off, like I'm defending on ice. I usually really enjoy MyGM, but I didn't really give it more than a week or two's shot this time. The cutscenes/chats were pretty annoying, and I don't love the progression system. I played MyCareer the most, about 20 NBA games and the HS/College ones, and while it's fun enough, progression is a bit slow. I'd play more, but I do want to install The Show so I'll be dropping this. Big meh overall.

- The Outer Worlds: Really enjoyed my time with it, though many of its systems definitely felt underbaked. Like my stats didn't really feel like they mattered much, or I had trouble choosing perks not because of a difficult choice, but because most of them were underwhelming. Regardless, I really liked the story and the characters, the world was well put together, and I enjoyed literally all of the companion quests (even Max's at the end). Standout characters like Parv, Lilya, Zora, and Sanjar, among others. Looking forward to the DLCs.

- Narita Boy: Enjoyed many of the fights and the overarching story with the creator's memories, but didn't love how it controlled, overly elaborate dialogue in the game, or the confusing direction. Had a lot of fun music (which was what sold me onto playing it), but I wish it had more.

- Rain on Your Parade: Easy and short. It was fun enough. I liked the one-off mechanics in stages like the Adventure or First Person Cloud stage, but the rest of it felt real mundane, even more so than something like Donut County. The abilities were fun.

- Outriders: Gameplay loop is really fun but SO MANY FRUSTRATING BUGS with connecting with friends. I played with someone on One X and someone on PS5 and even up until our latest session we were still crashing out of the party and having disconnects. A friend even got disconnected in the middle of the final boss fight! I'm looking forward to playing more, and maybe the other classes, but damn if that's not annoying. Not to mention the frankly terrible story and VA. That said, regardless of the frustrations I have with the game, it's still a really fun game to play, and it'll keep me playing for as long as my buddies do.

- The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon & Murder on Eridanos: Really great additions to the main game. Really it's more of the same, but the story on both DLCs were really fun to play through, both Gorgon and Eridanos were great, meaty planets (if sometimes frustrating to navigate), and more excellent characters like Minnie and [REDACTED] introduced. Finally found some guns here that I actually really liked too.

- Sayonara Wild Hearts: Wow wow wow. I started playing this when Apple Arcade first came out, but decided to restart and finish it since I got a new iPad over the weekend. It's such an amazing soundtrack. Been jamming to "Begin Again" for a week+. The art style is dope and the gameplay itself has a lot more variety than expected. As an overall package, this is something special, and I'm very glad to have played it.

- MLB: The Show '21: I used to really love baseball games and I did enjoy what I played of this. RttS was a fun way to do just bite-sized pieces. Unfortunately, not only am I not familiar with the league, but I'm absolutely terrible at hitting, so I didn't end up loving this as much as I wanted. That said, very glad I got the opportunity to play it, and might dip in every now and then.

- The Wild at Heart: (1000/1000) I really liked this one as someone who's never touched a Pikmin game. I really enjoyed the level design and the characters, the style was something I really vibed with. I thought the world was brilliantly designed, just open-ended enough that I felt some freedom in what I was doing while never getting lost.

- Psychonauts: Very fun game, very enjoyable and humorous story. My first Double Fine game, played in 2021 lol. I'd say it holds up, but there's still a lot of jank in the controls so I can't 100% say that it was all enjoyable. Particularly in the ending level with the huge tower, I had a TON of issues platforming there and starting again from the bottom. The boss fights were a little ehhh, but otherwise, the minds/worlds were really great. I was enjoying the camp concept and the lodge as sort of a 'home world', but I don't think they went very far with it. Overall fun game.

- Halo 3: Was my second playthrough. Didn't feel as much gusto to finish it, but it was still overall very enjoyable. There were parts of the story that didn't really flow well into the other, The Arbiter felt pretty blank as a character this time round, and it felt like there were a lot of rehashes/too heavy callbacks of the first game with respect to levels. Otherwise, still a blast to play, some memorable missions (Tsavo and The Covenant come to mind), and an overall nice ending to the trilogy.

- Halo 3: ODST: Second play through. It's fine, I enjoyed the way they did the story but not the story itself? As in, I liked that we did the whole find your squadmates thing. But the Mombasa Streets themselves were a little boring. Fun enough though, just more Halo.

- Slay the Spire: Mostly played on cloud, which was a cool experience; and it worked smoothly most of the time. I finished maybe about 20 runs, and it's just a really unique concept and very tight design. It felt like all my choices were meaningful, and even experimenting with cards I didn't want on initial runs had a lot of fun involved.

- Football Manager 21: Like the Xbox edition, but more fully fleshed. Similar review: they knocked the match engine out of the park this year. I only played about 56seasons with Villa, winning the league twice, and it's good times as usual. I had issues with scout reports and player cost inflation though which made latter seasons' transfer windows a touch less fun. Don't know if any of the game design is to blame, or if it just reflects real life lol.

- Fifa 21: I typically just play career mode these days and it's as bog-standard as ever. They never improved it, and I'm pretty done with it after winning the league with Leicester on Legendary. Great engine, pretty good AI, and some genuine sweaty moments with some great goals, but that's about it. I may want to get it early and dive into FUT one of these years and really get into it, idk.

- Death's Door: (1000/1000) I finished this twice in quick succession to get the 1000/1000 and no regrets, this is a wonderful game. Really tight controls, atmospherically wonderful, and really good boss fights (including the mob ones) meant this was a game I am really happy I didn't miss. Challenging, but never felt out of reach.

- Psychonauts 2: (1000/1000) Calling it my GOTY right now. We'll see if that changes. MUCH better tuned controls than the first one, a lot of good humor, great powers, improved boss fights, great world design, and a really engaging story. I still don't love the point of no return, but forgivable given the story beats.

- Legends of Runeterra: Ongoing, obviously, but played it to the point of completing the Akshan/Viego event pass. Got back into it after a year away and it's at a REALLY good place right now. It feels like any decent deck I play, I have a chance (on normals) and the Lab of Legends is a super fun mode that I exhausted.

- Hades: (1000/1000) I get the hype. I tried it on PC last year and wasn't that into it, and then I tried a few runs when it came out on Game Pass and played nearly every day until Oct. 7. I cannot believe how smooth it controls, how unique all of the weapons are to tune a run's playstyle around, and how good the story, dialogue, and relationship bonding system is. And every run truly feels different, or at least different enough from the x prior runs that it always feels fresh. I got 1000/1000, and I'm tempted to play more to get all the bonds and finish the last prophecy or two.

Hello! It's me! Back for 2021!

2018
2019
2020

GAMES COMPLETED IN 2021

1. Jumping Joe and Friends (Switch) - 01/01/21 - ~4 hours (100% Unlockables)

I assume this was a mobile game at some point.

Endless runner style tower ascension. Use either L or R to jump to the platform above and to your left or right respectively. Avoid obstacles, collect coins, Spin a wheel of fortune at the end of a run to see if you unlock anything special for your next go.

There isn't an 'ending' per se, but there are several characters to unlock and upgrade, as well as two additional challenge modes that unlock once you hit certain heights in a regular arcade game.

Was fun enough to have on in the background whilst I listened to podcasts or watched YouTube. Controls are nicely responsive and allow you to get into a nice hurdy gurdy rhythm once you understand the challenges, obstacles and enemies you'll come across. Probably cost about nine pence in a sale as well, so I definitely feel I got my money's worth.

2. Can Androids Pray (Switch) - 01/01/21 - ~30mins (Credits x2)

An incredibly heavy visual novel vignette about mortality, consciousness, and religion. Proper existentialist stuff.

There's a Magrudergrind song that samples this (Bad Machine - YouTube) scene from Midnight Express, and even with Can Androids Pray pumping out its excellent soundtrack, it was this that played in my head throughout my two trips to the game's 15 minute conclusion.

It's a bit like the Subsurface games by Mike Bithell, but more focussed. One conversation that takes place in one place, between two beings.

Absolutely worth a play, but make sure you're prepared for its short run length.

3. Guitar Hero (Carabiner LCD *Thing*) - 01/01/21 - ~1 hour (End)

My brother is good at gift giving. After realising I'd already bought myself a Mario Game + Watch, and returning the one he'd bought me for Christmas, he went back to the drawing board, and remember my love of Guitar Hero bought me this relative monstrosity.

10 'songs' (read: 30 bitcrushed clips). I beat the game on the hardest difficulty, but only after a good few attempts to learn exactly how the game wants you to play it.

Hit notes early. I mean really early.
Don't listen for the music as the notes don't line up, and the truncated riffs mean its almost impossible to predict where notes will head next.
Whammy like your life depends on it with each held note as they will break your combo consistently, and so wailing for points becomes the only way to hit the score barrier of each song tier.

A great laugh.

4. Dadish (Switch) - 02/01/21 - ~4 hours (100%)

Bought largely on the strength of his central conceit - you're a radish who's a dad - this quirky, SNES style platformer is really great.

Quick stages that follow a logical difficulty curve, a hidden collectible on almost every stage. The only low point are the bosses - all involve frustrating timing that has you avoiding the enemy whilst triggering traps for them to jump on. One boss like this? Fine. All of them? Ehhh.

Looks nice, sounds nice, and has a good sense of humour in its writing to boot.

Dad-ish. A Dad who's a radish. Dadish. Get it?

5. Gunman Clive HD (Switch) - 06/01/21 - ~4 hours (100% No Damage)

I like this game. I liked it back on the 3DS a million years back, and I liked it in its HD form on the Wii U. When it popped up on the eShop for the Switch, heavily discounted (of course), I was always going to pick it up again.

I beat the main game's 20 levels in about an hour? It then took about 2 or so hours of grinding to beat each stage without taking damage. I was drawn in by the little star you get on the overworld map to represent your achievement, and assumed you'd get something at the end for your efforts. Nah.

I might go back at some point to try one of the other characters - they all change up the game significantly, so there's decent replay there, but equally I might move on to Gunman Clive 2. Or, y'know, another game entirely.

6. Stilstand (PC) - 09/01/21 - ~1 hour (Credits)

We need a name for this genre. Part graphic novel, part interactive narrative experience, part micro games. Florence fell into this category, and Stilstand does too with its hour long tale of a young woman's depressive episode.

The art is fantastic. All scribbled biro lines or rushed pencil work. The interactive elements actually take away from the art as opposed to draw you in, as there's suddenly a clear disconnect between the thing you are moving or controlling, and the curated backdrops. It's really nice to look at though, and the recurring theme of an entirely scribbled in black background to represent the real pit of her despair feels incredibly tangible as a result of being hand-rendered.

It doesn't have a rounded, happy ending, and nor does it need it. Sometimes life is about living through something, and sometimes that something doesn't have a neat stopping point. We want to enact change to allow things to get better for the protagonist, but, we're mostly passive in this story and have to hope that the change comes from within, supported by the persistent friends in her life who keep attempting to extend a hand even when they find themselves mostly rebuked.

It's good.

7. V.O.I.D.+ (Switch) - 10/01/21 - ~2 hours ('Ending')

Ploids Saga on the Switch collects together 4 games by developer Nape Games. V.O.I.D.+ is the first in the series. It's not very good.

50 odd levels, each which can be played with one of two characters. One has a blaster (a la MegaMan) but can also bounce on enemies to dispatch them. You have a health bar and can take several hits before death. The other has no weapon, but can triple jump (!!), and dies in a single hit. This essentially sets the difficulty of the game at 'incredibly easy' or 'impossible'. I went with easy.

Confusingly, when you finish the last level, there is no final story cutscene like there has been in between every other world, no fanfare, no credits, nothing. You're just plonked into a really confusing world select screen, in case you want to go back and do some of it again?

The game also lets you select "UNLEASHED MODE (All levels unlocked)" or "UNLEASHED CLASSIC MODE (All levels unlocked in classic V.O.I.D. gameplay)". No, I do not know what either of these mean.

8. Humanoid 37 (PC) - 11/01/21 - ~45mins (Credits)

Flash is dead. But with BlueMaxima's Flashpoint archive project, long live Flash? On a recent episode of Our Three Cents, we debated what were the 'weirdest' games we'd played. Good friend Minty offered Humanoid 37, a weird point and click / escape the room Flash experience that made the esoteric solutions of traditional adventure games make sense by way of ensuring that nothing made sense.

It's absolutely great. A quick, snappy experience with fantastic hand drawn art, and music that puts me in mind of Thumper.

There are nearly 80,000 games and animations currently archived in Flashpoint. Even if only 10% of that number is as good as Humanoid 37, hell, make it 1% if you're being conservative, there's some truly good shit to dig through and find.

9. Advanced GTA (GBA) - 13/01/21 - ~5 hours (Credits)

When the GBA launched, I remember reading about this game on Eurogamer. I don't know why it's lived in the back of my head for so long, but there we go. I've made an effort to beat it a few times, but always tailed off. Not this time though! Over the course of a few hours here and there, snuggled up before bed, or whilst half watching stuff on TV, I've finally got through to the credits.

The game is a surprisingly fun racer, with great handling for the handheld, and a nice visual style that mixes mode-7 style scaling tracks, with diddy, digitised cars that are scaled and rotated a la the sprites in Doom.

It's also a surprisingly tough game, following the Ridge Racer model of starting you almost a full lap behind the pack leaders in each race. At first I could make up the pace pretty easily, but very quickly it becomes a real test of your abilities to reach 1st place.

By the final cup, I was having to attempt some tracks maybe 50 times each before I could even register a third place finish. Luckily, the credits roll as long as you can come in the top 3 in every challenge, and so, even though I didn't complete it 100%, I'm happy.

10. Sonic R (PC) - 13/01/21 - ~1 hours (100%)

I love this game.

11. Paratopic (PC) - 16/01/21 - ~2 hours (100%)

Late last year I beat MacBat64 and said it was one of the best examples of a developer mimicking the aesthetic of Rare titles on the N64. Here we are in 2021, and Paratopic is the best game I've played that mimics the cursed PS1 aesthetic by a long way.

The only thing it eschews is the warping affine textures normally present on geometry, BUT it makes up for it by doubling down on this effect on facial models.

This is a weird narrative title, essentially a walking simulator, which cribs from the jumpcuts of 30 Flights of Loving to tell its story of 3 characters linked by mysterious videotapes.

The look is great, the writing is good, the elements of interactivity lift this above many 'hold forward and let the story happen' games that fall into this genre.

A weird, Lynchian nightmare. Absolutely worth a play.

12. Cycle 28 (Switch) - 18/01/21 - ~6 hours (100%)

This is a strange top down space shooter that uses a momentum based control scheme like Asteroids. Your character is caught in a groundhog day style time loop and it uses this premise to justify the push to increase your high score on each play. Story is drip fed to you after each death, and upgrades are unlocked to help you on your high scoring quest each time you beat your personal best.

It's aggravatingly difficult, yet I was compelled to go back again and again. The control scheme is nuanced and movement can be really tough to nail, but when you start to be able to consistently drift between projectiles and circle around enemies by feathering your throttle and braking using the kickback of your weapon it feels pretty special.

There aren't any achievements in the Switch version of the game, so I based my completion on those on Steam. I get the impression there are still a few hidden treasures in the game as it's loosely tied to an ongoing ARG, but I can't be bothered to get sucked in to all that.

13. Awesome Pea 2 (Vita) - 20/01/21 - ~2 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

I beat the first Awesome Pea last year and really enjoyed it, even if it was a bit unpolished in places.

The second game is smoother, with level design that I'd say is better overall. Quite a few stages seem to be built from the same chunks as others though which makes it feel a bit lazy - a real budget experience.

The difficulty ramped nicely though, and I did enjoy the experience overall. I sometimes get annoyed by games that rely on double jumps to cover the cracks of poor stage design, but here the arc of a double jump is part of the route through a stage, and it was fun to master the momentum and weight of the little pea for a second time.

14. Spoiler Alert (PC) - 21/01/21 - ~2 hours (All Achievements [Steam])

I do like a gimmick game. Create a weird mechanic, then squeeze it for all its worth in a short sugary hit of a game.

The premise of Spoiler Alert is that the game has been beaten, and you're running backwards to retrace your steps to the start of the game - unkilling enemies, replacing coins you picked up, being inversely launched by bounce pads, etc. Think the ending of Braid but without any of the symbolism.

The game is pretty sloppy which does let it down. Input is smudgy at best, meaning that you'll often miss jumps that you know you should have nailed. BUT, it's cheap, stages never last more than about 12 seconds at full tilt, and the central premise is fun enough that I didn't care too much when I got hung up on a stage for a few minutes.

15. Go! Fish Go! (Switch) - 21/01/21 - ~4 hours (100%)

Another endless runner style game. Nowhere near as mechanically fun as Jumping Joe though. It's from the same developers who put out Miami Rush that I played last year, and that was way more enjoyable as well, as the gameplay itself was just a bit more expansive and nuanced. This is incredibly simple 'choose one of three lanes to avoid oncoming obstacles' and that's it.

There's an in game achievement system, unlockable characters, blah, blah blah. I did it all for some reason whilst listening to podcasts.

16. Reed Remastered (Vita) - 21/01/21 - ~1 hour (All Trophies [PSN])

A really nice, 50 stage 'punisher'. That is, a platformer with tricky obstacles, instadeath, the works. A Meat Boy-lite?

This is a phenomenal looking and sounding game, which really sings as a quick handheld experience. Suits the Vita down to the ground.

I have to give Ratalaika credit for being one of the last bastions for Vita ports and releases, but I have to pipe up about their trophy implementation - something I'd already whinged about on an O3C episode months back. Easy trophies? Fine, fill your boots. But it really devalues an experience like this when your trophies actively stop you wanting to finish a game. As I mentioned, Reed Remastered has 50 stages. The platinum trophy requires you to get to stage 44 only. Why?

Genuinely don't know why this decision was made. 45-50 took me an extra 5 minutes at most. Why on earth would Ratalaika implement a system like that that would make trophy hunters just uninstall the game 5 minutes before the end? Before the story wraps, before the credits?

This has been in the case in several of their ports: League of Evil, Milo's Quest, Metagal, Peasant Knight. Play a bit, get your reward, then if you fancy, just uninstall.

A real shame as ALL of those games, and Reed Remastered too, deserve more love.

17. Reed 2 (Vita) - 21/01/21 - ~90mins (All Trophies [PSN])

So, I cannonballed straight into the sequel.

It still looks great, even if it loses some of the shader and effects work from the first game. It's harder overall, I think? Probably due to the levels requiring you to find multiple 'keys' before you can exit instead of just one which extends their size and playtime.

The trophy system is still stupid - platinum unlocked on level 29 out of 49 this time - but the game itself is good, and again, fits the handheld really, really well. These sorts of quick, punishing platformers became ten-a-penny on the console in its final years, and although people complained they weren't playing the next Uncharted spin-off, games like Reed and Reed 2 are arguably much better fits for a pocket sized handheld.

What's next?

18. Lewdapocalypse (PC) - 22/01/21 - ~5 hours (All Achievements [Steam])

Would you believe me if I said this was a good game?

Stand in place, and shoot oncoming zombie hordes in a weird parody of Resident Evil 3. Think the type of storyline whacked in an adult parody film, and you're most of the way there.

It's decent though! There's a sort of adolescent charm to it all, and it's wrapped up in a perfectly serviceable shooter.

19. Epic Word Search Collection (Vita) - 24/01/21 - ~2 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

I enjoy a wordsearch now and again, I mean, who doesn't?

I did not enjoy this particular implementation of the wordsearch though. Multiple puzzles smacked down next to each other, each so over-filled with clues, that to play it normally would take even a seasoned pro about a hundred years to beat properly.

The main problem, is how little of the whole puzzle you can see on screen at one time. Maybe 1% of the entire board? In the same way jigsaws are usually pretty miserable when made digital unless grossly simplified, this sort of puzzle just doesn't work digitally at this scale.

I know I complained about Ratalaika's implementation of trophies a few days ago, but I'm actually grateful that here you only need to 100% one chunk of each of the four boards, then find specific key words spread out over the remaining puzzles.

There is absolutely no way, even with the in-built hint system, that I would have persevered much further than this point, so props to the developer in this case for making the game both beatable and reasonable.

20. Pinstripe (Switch) - 01/02/21 - ~3 hours (Credits)

This was a nice surprise! A narrative, platform puzzler. Beautiful art, some excellent voice work, and a reasonably satisfying metaphorical adventure which all becomes clearer as you work towards the game's climax.

A very Tim Burton-y aesthetic makes it a real joy to look at, and the music is similarly strong. That the entire game was developed by one person over the course of five years makes me appreciate it all even more, although finding out at the credits that one of the voice artists was PewDiePie kinda soured me a little on its production.

There are extra bits and bobs you can unlock in a second playthrough, and I think I'd like to go back at some point, but started soon after finishing the game, rushed past a collectible, and then realised you can't restart a playthrough, only persevere to the credits or wipe your whole game at system level. Whoops.

--

And that's the first 20 down! Continue with me on my journey to beat this challenge 4 years straight HERE.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog

Being the series' 30th anniversary, I figured I would give this game a replay once again. I think it holds up pretty well on its own, although some sections in the late game were BS such as the invincible enemies in Star Light and the various hazards in Scrap Brain. Getting the chaos emeralds tends to be a chore especially as there is no superficial reward for getting them all outside of 100% completion but I did it this time.

1. Super Castlevania IV (PS4) | 1/1/2021 | 4 hrs | 4/5
I decided to continue going through the Castlevania Collection to try and finish them all out. I really enjoyed this game. Everything was an improvement over CV3 on NES. I liked the new 8 way whip as it made things much easier to fight. The final level was tough but I finally got to use the trick I remember seeing on a GamePro hints video I rented from Blockbuster almost 30 years ago.
