Welcome to the Japanese Manga Sales |OT| !

I've always thought it was weird that no thread about this exists. Usually, this kind of stuff is shared in the Manga |OT|, but that's not really the point of that thread ; And if I wanted to share every new number in that thread, it would harm discussion.

I will use two main sources.

First is Oricon. It tracks physical sales across Japan and a large share of it is either public or leaked.
This includes :

A weekly top 10 best-selling manga series (which tracks all the volumes of a single manga together) that leaks around 6 a.m. GMT on Wednesdays
A weekly top 50 for individual manga volumes that is released around 1 a.m. GMT on Fridays
A monthly top 20 best-selling manga series that releases on Fridays of the week following the end of the month
A top 10 best-selling manga series for the first half of a year that releases one week after the end of the tracking period
A top 50 best-selling individual manga volumes for the first half of the year that releases alongside it
A yearly top 10 best-selling manga series that releases one week after the end of the tracking period
A yearly top 50 best-selling individual manga volumes that releases alongside it

The Oricon tracking period usually starts at Week 47 and ends at Week 46, with exceptions being made for years having 53 weeks.
Thus, the ongoing year, 2024, started on November 20th, 2023 and will end on November 17th, 2024.

The second main source of information is Shoseki, a Point of Sale tracker.
It releases estimates of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly top 500 best selling individual manga volumes.

Is also relevant to this thread :

Data from a single retailer (Honto, Honya Club, etc)
Circulation updates from publishers
Sales data from the rest of the world (There isn't a lot, so this thread is enough for them)
And more!

Finally, if you are interested, you can find this google sheet that contains every single weekly top 50 from Oricon (2009-2011 weeks are sometimes incomplete because the data has never been translated, but it's something I'm currently working on). There is also a search function if you just want to see how well a volume is doing compared to its predecessor.

The volumes of the Shogakukan version (the one with Maomao in the title) sell about 1/3rd of the Square Enix version (the one that came out last week). So yeah, it's pretty popular.
In terms of circulation. The Shogakukan version has 3.5m units in print for 9 volumes. The total for the franchise is 11.5m (this includes the two manga and the light novel). We don't know the exact split. But something like 1m for the LN, 3.5m for the Shogakukan manga and 7m for the Square Enix manga seems realistic.
And both manga are growing pretty fast too. In July, the total for the franchise was 7.5m, including 2.6m for the Shogakukan version.

Yeah, it's kinda weird. Especially since the Shogakukan version started a few months later.
Looking at the chapters, I think it's because the Shogakukan manga has longer chapters (both are monthly). I'd say its average is 45 pages per chapter vs 30 for the Square Enix one. Also, the Square Enix manga is more often on break I believe.

Incredible week for Demon Slayer. Its best ever and thus a new record. The previous one was from Week 43, 2020 (Oct 19 - Oct 25).
Following the huge success of the movie on October 16th, the manga sold 3,688,476 units in seven days. With 4,774,072 units sold this week, the record has been beaten by over a million.
In a single week, Demon Slayer has outsold the 2020 total of Spy x Family and Attack on Titan.

Excellent week for Jujutsu Kaisen too. This week seems to be on par with the best ones Attack on Titan had back in 2013, when it exploded in popularity and became the second best-selling ongoing manga. Their peak being comparable is impressive, but now it's all about whether or not this Jujutsu Kaisen boost can last.

Depending on how well it'll sell in the long run, Demon Slayer Gaiden might be in the 2021 top 10 with just that single volume...

Haikyu!! and The Promised Neverland are both selling incredibly well. And both might have a chance at entering the 2021 top 10 with no new volume released in that timeframe. That's especially true for the latter which will get a live-action movie and a season 2 of its anime.

By the way
With Chainsaw Man being confirmed to not end (Part 2 in Jump+) and it getting an anime at some point (no date but 2021 is likely?), its place in the 2021 top 10 seems guaranteed. (unless Oricon counts the two parts separately? But even then, the first part might make it thanks to the anime)

I'm happy that despite there being basically no suspense for the top 2 (Demon Slayer #1, Jujutsu #2), the rest will be interesting to follow

Obvious comparison is obvious. The 2019 Jump+ megahit vs the 2020 Jump+ megahit.
Comparison is flawed for the first few weeks because SxF suffered from heavy stock issues. But what matters is if Kaiju manages to keep selling in the 10k-30k range every week like SxF did.

The gap between volume 20 and 19 of Kaguya increased this week (after it had logically decreased because of the higher number of days in its first week). This cements volume 20 as the best selling volume of Kaguya.

With this third week of 2021, Demon Slayer has already beaten the total of the n°2 of 2020 (Kingdom at 8,251,058 units). If anyone had any doubts that it would stay in the first place...

Jujutsu Kaisen seems to be suffering from stock issues, and looking at Shoseki, it looks like they haven't been solved as of Monday (2020.12.14).

Chainsaw Man is gaining steam thanks to the leaks of its anime+sequel. The effects of the official announcements will be felt next week (its volumes have a big chance at entering the weekly top 50, especially if Jujutsu doesn't climb back up).

Nothing seems to stop Haikyu!! and The Promised Neverland. The live-action movie releases this Friday for the latter. At this point, I'm 90% sure that they'll both be in the 2021 top 10.

Attack on Titan is doing fairly well, but it'll need to do better if it wants to stay in the top 10 with only 2 new volumes. Wait and see.

It's always weird to see a spin-off outsell a main series, but it seems to be a constant with Iruma-kun and Makai.

Slightly better first week for Arslan. But volume 13 came out during Spring, and a large number of volumes that released in that period did somewhat poorly (which was later confirmed when their following volume happened to sell better, as is the case here). Probably because of covid?
And this is not as good as volume 12 last year. So I don't think we can say that its sales have stopped falling. Yet.

Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer Gaiden are all back in stock for another incredible week.

The first new volume of Kingdom for the year released, and it seems it did pretty well.
The other Weekly Young Jump new release that charted, Golden Kamuy, also did good. It's in line with the release weeks of previous volumes

The rest of the top 10 is full of manga that got pushed one way or another:

-Chainsaw Man got a huge boost this week thanks to all the announcements surrounding its end/its anime. It should not last too long, but this is a sign that it will comeback and be very strong everytime the manga is pushed, even a little. If the anime is indeed in 2021, then it should have a great year.

-The Promised Neverland got one thanks to its live-action movie, it should last a bit longer, especially since the anime will start again soon.

-Haikyuu also got a boost in sales thanks to the end of its anime. Now, the question is how well will it sell without it?

-Tokyo Revengers got a boost in sales thanks to the promotion surrounding its anime (new trailer, VA announcements, etc).

-Attack on Titan is taking advantage of its final season with a small increase

Demon Slayer increased WoW, Jujutsu decreased.
TPN and Haikyu!! reached a million units sold without any new volume. Chainsaw Man should reach that next week.
Seems like Kingdom did not do so well for its second week.
Valkyrie is probably helped by its anime announcement.

Jujutsu Kaisen and its stock issues aside, a lot of manga are simply doing amazing currently. Even outside this top 10. This is simply an incredible period of growth for the industry.

Spy x Family's 6th volume probably just sold more than 500k units in 7 days. Its first 5 volumes should appear Friday in the weekly top 50.

Same with Chainsaw Man whose 9 volumes should be there (thanks to Jujutsu Kaisen being out of stock).

Haikyu!! and The Promised Neverland are neck and neck. This feels especially impressive for Haikyu!! since TPN has its live-action movie and its upcoming anime to help boost its sales.

Attack on Titan is doing well. It should be able to rank in the top 10 of its final year. A year ago, this would have seemed impossible.

Kingdom might have had a better third week? This seems like a great score considering its rather low backlog in the past few weeks.

As I said, Jujutsu Kaisen is suffering from heavy stock issues. I'm surprised it managed to rank in the top 10 at all.

There are a lot of manga that I expect in the top 20 that we'll get Friday. Why? Because they have all their volumes in the weekly Shoseki top 500.
Namely: Honey Lemon Soda, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, Shuumatsu no Valkyrie, Tokyo Revengers, Fire Force, Dr. Stone, Blue Lock and probably others that I'm forgetting

Great week for Attack on Titan. Its new volume probably sold as much in 3 days as volume 32 did in 5.

Jujutsu Kaisen is almost completely out of stock except for volume 14 that just released. And that too almost completely sold out in a single week. Things should get better with Week 2.

Chainsaw Man's first 9 volumes seem to have sold slightly more than last week, to which are added the sales of volume 10 which will break the series records.

My Hero Academia has reached 1m estimated units sold which means the threshold to enter the top 10 is 1 million. Last year, this was reached during week 9.

Demon Slayer just had its worst week in over a year (back in October 2019 when it had huge stock issues), because of stock issues too. Just like Jujutsu Kaisen's, its situation should improve enxt week.

We should get a second week in a row where all Spy x Family's volumes chart in the top 50. This hasn't happened since August 2020 (and there was only 4 volumes back then)

One-Punch Man is still in an extremely poor state. There is not much to say, its fall was the worst of 2020 and it has not recovered.

Dr. Stone most likely broke the series record with its new volumes.

Natsume seems like it didn't do so well? We'll have to see in the volume ranking.

Finally, Haikyu!! takes the tenth spot, meaning The Promised Neverland is out of the top 10 for the first time this year.
